World View with Marites Vitug: Enrico Gloria on how countries negotiate with China
MANILA, Philippines – Relations between the Philippines and China remain strained as disputes increasingly extend beyond the West Philippine Sea.
While Beijing and Manila have kept communication channels open, recent incidents have exposed how difficult it is to negotiate even limited arrangements. This raises broader questions about how countries engage with one of the world’s most powerful states.
On Friday, August 21, Rappler editor-at-large Marites Vitug speaks to political scientist Enrico Gloria to unpack China’s approach to negotiations and how it uses both sanctions and diplomacy as foreign policy tools.
Gloria is an assistant professor of political science at the University of the Philippines Diliman. His research focuses on China’s foreign policy, political discourse, and Philippines-China relations, among others.
What lessons can the Philippines draw from other countries that have negotiated with Beijing?
