Wasim Akram’s 1992 heroics inspire Rabada ahead of 2027 World Cup

JOHANNESBURG: South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has revealed that one of Wasim Akram’s greatest World Cup performances is motivating him as the Proteas prepare for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup on home soil.

Rabada, speaking at the official World Cup 2027 venue and brand announcement event in Johannesburg, acknowledged that hosting cricket’s biggest tournament brings an added sense of responsibility. However, the experienced pacer said he prefers to view home advantage as an opportunity rather than a burden.

“I think there’s a lot more to it at the moment with us hosting it,” Rabada said.

Rather than feeling pressured to deliver a title in front of home supporters, the 31-year-old wants South Africa to embrace the occasion and protect what he described as their “fortress”.

“For me, it’s about representing the badge,” Rabada said, stressing the pride that comes with playing a World Cup in front of South African fans.

The fast bowler also looked back at the 1992 World Cup final, identifying Pakistan great Wasim Akram’s devastating spell against England as one of the tournament moments he remembers most vividly.

Akram changed the final with two remarkable deliveries that removed Allan Lamb and Chris Lewis in successive balls, helping Pakistan seize control before eventually lifting the trophy.

For Rabada, the performance represented everything he admires about fast bowling: pace, skill, intensity and the ability to rise to the biggest occasion.

“He was fast, had so much skill, and just had this presence, this heightened energy about him,” Rabada recalled.

The South African pacer hopes his team can create a similarly memorable moment in 2027. South Africa have repeatedly shown the ability to reach the latter stages of major ICC tournaments but have struggled to convert those appearances into a world title.

Rabada believes that barrier is no longer psychological.

“We’ve shown that we can go and play in finals and in the semi-finals,” he said.

The remaining challenge, he added, is taking that final step.

With the 2027 World Cup set to be staged across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, Rabada and his teammates will have a major opportunity to write their own chapter in cricket history.

And if Rabada can channel even a little of Akram’s 1992 magic, South African fans may have plenty to celebrate.

    Fake arms licence racket busted in KP, two arreste…

    Police have uncovered a fake arms licence racket in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, exposing an illegal network that allegedly produced forged weapon licences from a house. Authorities believe the operation had been running through a well-organised system and involved both private individuals and a government employee. According to police, the suspects were preparing counterfeit arms licences using computer equipment and printing materials inside a residential property. Investigators said each fake licence was sold for amounts ranging from Rs80,000 to Rs250,000, depending on the type of licence and the customer’s requirements. Police said an employee of the Home Department’s Licence Branch has also been found involved in the case. His alleged role is being investigated to determine how official records or procedures may have been misused. A case has been registered, and two suspects have been arrested during the operation. Police carried out a raid and seized a large quantity of equipment allegedly used to manufacture the fake licences. The recovered items include a laptop, a printer, ink bottles, around 700 licence cards, and other materials believed to have been used for printing forged documents. Investigators are examining the seized equipment to identify additional suspects and uncover the full scale of the operation. Police have also written to the Home Department, requesting assistance in the investigation. Officials are expected to examine departmental records to determine whether more employees were involved or if official data was misused. Sources in the Home Department said a committee will be formed to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident. The committee will investigate the role of all individuals linked to the case and recommend legal and departmental action where necessary. CCPO Dr Mian Saeed said the investigation is progressing and that authorities are determined to bring everyone involved to justice. He said strict action will be taken against all suspects, including any government officials found responsible. He added that no official involved in the fake arms licence racket would be given any leniency, and the investigation would continue until the entire network is exposed.

Screen recordings reportedly captured workers reading answers straight from ChatGPT during live hiring interviews. North Korea’s IT operatives typically rely on stolen American identities to pass candidate screening and background checks. Many are said to juggle multiple jobs simultaneously, all operating under the same stolen name. Some of these workers reportedly earn as much as $300,000 a year through these remote positions. The US Treasury Department has found that up to 90% of those earnings get funneled directly back to the regime. Officials estimate the overall operation generates as much as $800 million annually for North Korea. That scale has made it one of the more lucrative sanctions-evasion schemes uncovered in recent years. Investigators traced the flow of funds through a wider network involving North Korean IT workers and affiliated cybercriminals. That trail eventually led to a company being sanctioned by the US, reportedly tied to Pyongyang’s broader defence development program. The findings highlight how North Korea has adapted its sanctions-evasion tactics for the remote work era. By blending stolen identities with AI-assisted job applications, the regime has found a modern, low-visibility way to bypass international restrictions on its economy. As remote hiring becomes more common globally, cases like this are raising fresh questions about how companies verify who they’re actually hiring.
