Senator Muhammad Abdul Qadir has expressed serious concern over the rising cost of living in the country. He said inflation is increasing at a rate of 9.66 percent, while ordinary people are struggling to meet their daily needs.

In a statement, the Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Defence Production said the continued rise in the prices of essential commodities was creating additional pressure on households.

He said prices of 23 basic items had increased, making it difficult for people to manage their monthly expenses. According to the senator, the rising prices of food and other necessities are directly affecting families with limited incomes.

Senator Abdul Qadir urged the government to take immediate steps to control inflation. He said effective measures were needed to provide relief to the public and prevent further increases in the prices of essential commodities.

He also raised concerns over the role of profiteers and powerful market mafias. He alleged that some groups were artificially increasing the prices of essential goods for their own benefit.

The senator said such practices were adding to the financial difficulties faced by ordinary citizens. He stressed that there should be strict monitoring of markets to identify those involved in illegal profiteering and price manipulation.

Senator Abdul Qadir called for effective and indiscriminate action against profiteers and mafias. He said no individual or group involved in artificially increasing prices should be allowed to exploit consumers.

He further emphasized that controlling inflation required coordinated efforts from the government and relevant authorities. Regular market inspections, effective price monitoring and strict enforcement of laws, he said, were essential to protect consumers.

The senator maintained that immediate action was necessary to ease the burden on the public. He urged the government to make controlling inflation a priority and take practical measures to stabilize prices across the country.

    An Islamabad District and Sessions Court has ruled in favour of Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal in a long-running defamation case against PTI leader Murad Saeed. The court ordered Murad Saeed to pay Rs2.5 million in damages for making allegations that were not proven during the proceedings. Additional Sessions Judge Hakim Khan announced the verdict after hearing the case. The court held that Murad Saeed’s statements had damaged Ahsan Iqbal’s reputation and public image. It directed the PTI leader to compensate the federal minister with Rs2.5 million. According to the judgment, Murad Saeed accused Ahsan Iqbal of being involved in corruption worth Rs70 billion. However, the court found that he failed to provide any evidence to support the allegations. The court ruled that the accusations of corruption, misuse of authority, and receiving illegal commissions were defamatory because they remained unsubstantiated. The judgment stated that Ahsan Iqbal had initially sought Rs10 billion in damages for the alleged harm caused to his reputation. However, the court observed that the amount claimed was excessive in view of the evidence presented during the trial. It therefore awarded Rs2.5 million as reasonable compensation. The court further observed that Murad Saeed’s controversial statements had harmed Ahsan Iqbal’s reputation, dignity, and credibility. It said the allegations created a negative impression of the minister among the public and directly targeted his honesty, integrity, and professional standing. The judgment also noted that Murad Saeed neither appeared before the court during the proceedings nor submitted evidence to substantiate the corruption claims. The absence of supporting material, the court said, weakened his defence and left the allegations unproven. The case originated from statements made by Murad Saeed in 2019 regarding the Multan-Sukkur Motorway project. At the time, he alleged that Ahsan Iqbal had committed corruption in connection with the project. After reviewing the evidence and hearing the arguments, the court concluded that the accusations were not established and therefore amounted to defamation. The verdict marks the conclusion of the defamation proceedings, with the court reaffirming that public allegations of corruption must be backed by credible evidence.

  • CTD Punjab arrests 54 terrorists in 419 intelligence-based operations

    Lahore – The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) Punjab has achieved a major breakthrough against terrorism, extremism and anti-state activities by conducting large-scale intelligence-based operations (IBOs) across the province. According to a CTD spokesperson, a total of 419 intelligence-based operations were conducted in various districts of Punjab. During these operations, 422 suspected individuals were questioned while 54 terrorists associated with various banned terrorist organizations were arrested. According to the CTD, the arrested suspects also include individuals linked to the Indian intelligence agency RAW (Research and Analysis Wing). They include Waris Khan arrested in Lahore, Roz Ali Khan arrested in Okara, Danish Ali arrested in Lahore, Wilayat Shah arrested in Okara and Muhammad Aziz arrested in Okara. The CTD said these arrests are an important part of ongoing operations against enemy networks and further investigations against the suspects are underway in accordance with the law. The arrested individuals also include members associated with Daesh, Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Sipah-e-Sahaba, Fitna al-Khawarij and other banned organizations. They were arrested from various districts, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Jhelum, Sargodha, Mianwali, Bhakkar, Sahiwal, Mandi Bahauddin, Pakpattan and Bahawalpur. During the operations, law enforcement agencies recovered 7 kilograms and 900 grams of explosive material, 12 improvised explosive devices (IEDs), 50 detonators, 98 feet of safety fuse wire, 2 pistols, 3 rifles, a large quantity of ammunition, 120 pamphlets, 72 banned books, 31 prohibited magazines, 112 stickers, 2 flags, one receipt book, 8 mobile phones and Rs339,880 in cash. According to the spokesperson, over the past eight weeks, a total of 13,572 combing operations were conducted in collaboration with local police and other law enforcement agencies. During these operations, 494,642 individuals were checked, 1,103 arrests were made, 1,070 cases were registered and 977 recoveries of various kinds were made. The CTD Punjab has reiterated its commitment to further intensifying operations against terrorists, their facilitators and anti-state elements stressing that no compromise will be made on peace and security in Punjab. The department has appealed to citizens to immediately report any information regarding terrorism or suspicious activities to the CTD helpline at 0800-11111 to ensure timely action.

    SEF, Sindh Boy Scouts launch initiative to expand scouting across Foundation-assisted schools*

    KARACHI: The Sindh Education Foundation (SEF), Government of Sindh has initiated a collaboration with the Sindh Boy Scouts Association by holding a Group Scout Leadership Seminar aimed at promoting leadership, discipline and community service among students enrolled in Foundation Assisted Schools. The seminar, held at the Sindh Boy Scouts Association headquarters in Karachi, brought together representatives from 32 Foundation Assisted Schools, including head teachers, faculty members and students. The event was attended by SEF Managing Director Gahanwer Ali Laghari, Deputy Managing Director Shahpara Rizvi, Regional Head Karachi Ashfaque Hussain Meerani, senior directors, assistant directors and other officials. The Sindh Boy Scouts Association was represented by Provincial Scout Secretary Syed Akhter Meer, and other office-bearers. Addressing the seminar, Provincial Scout Secretary Syed Akhter Meer welcomed the participation of SEF schools and said introducing students to the history and values of scouting would encourage them to become part of a global movement focused on leadership, character building and service. He also recalled the support extended to the scouting movement by the late Prof Dr Anita Ghulam Ali during her tenure at SEF, saying it was encouraging to witness the Foundation continuing the same commitment under the leadership of Managing Director Gahanwer Ali Laghari. Participants were also briefed on the history of the scouting movement in Sindh, its achievements and future roadmap through a presentation highlighting the organisation’s contribution to youth development. Former senior bureaucrat Ghulam Ali Pasha said leadership and discipline could not be developed through classroom education alone, stressing that scouting provides young people with practical exposure to teamwork, responsibility and community service. He described such initiatives as essential for preparing students to become confident and responsible leaders. Speaking on the occasion, SEF Managing Director Gahanwer Ali Laghari said the Foundation’s mandate extended beyond improving access to education and academic outcomes. “Alongside quality education, we want our students to develop leadership, discipline and a sense of responsibility. Through scouting, they will have an opportunity to become part of an international movement that promotes these values,” he said. Laghari announced that SEF and the Sindh Boy Scouts Association would jointly organise a series of scouting activities across Foundation Assisted Schools throughout the province. He said the initiative had been launched with schools in Karachi and would gradually be expanded to all SEF-supported schools. “Our objective is to engage the entire network of Foundation Assisted Schools, and we are hopeful that within the next one-and-a-half years, scouting activities will be introduced across the province,” he added. The initiative is expected to provide students with greater opportunities for leadership development, teamwork and community engagement alongside their academic education.

    110 stranded Pakistani students return from Afghan…

    Another group of 110 Pakistani students has safely returned from Afghanistan through the Torkham border crossing following efforts to facilitate the repatriation of citizens affected by tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. According to border security officials, the students were brought back as part of ongoing arrangements to ensure the safe return of Pakistanis who had remained stranded across the border. Earlier, around 70 Pakistani students were also repatriated through the same crossing about a month ago. Authorities said the latest return reflects continued coordination between officials on both sides of the border to ease the movement of stranded individuals. The repatriation process was carried out smoothly under agreed arrangements aimed at addressing humanitarian concerns. In addition to the return of students, authorities also permitted 592 Pakistani cargo trucks to re-enter the country through the Torkham border. The move is expected to provide relief to transporters and traders whose commercial activities had been disrupted due to restrictions at the border. Border officials said the phased return of students and commercial vehicles was made possible through coordinated efforts involving diplomatic representatives, border security authorities from both countries and local facilitators working to improve cross-border movement.

    US confirms Israel-Lebanon talks in Rome

    The United States has confirmed that Israel and Lebanon will hold their next round of talks in Rome from August 4 to 6. The negotiations will focus on implementing a framework agreement aimed at ending the conflict and improving security along the Israel-Lebanon border. The talks will be mediated by the United States. Technical teams from both sides are expected to discuss several key issues. One major issue will be the expansion of pilot zones in southern Lebanon. Israel is preparing to withdraw from two of these areas as part of the framework agreement. The discussions will also cover unresolved border disputes. The sides are expected to explore steps towards a wider peace and security arrangement. The framework emerged after fighting between Israel and Hezbollah escalated on March 2. The conflict took place amid wider tensions across the Middle East. Under the agreement, Hezbollah is expected to disarm. Lebanese forces are also to increase their deployment in southern Lebanon. Israeli forces are expected to withdraw gradually from parts of southern Lebanon. The process will initially involve two designated pilot zones. US officials said the experience from the initial zones could help establish a broader system for withdrawal and security arrangements. The United States believes the pilot zones can be expanded in stages if the initial process proves successful. The Lebanese army, however, has raised concerns over continued Israeli military activity in the south. Beirut has accused Israel of carrying out intermittent strikes and artillery attacks despite the reduction in fighting. Lebanese officials say the continued military activity is making it harder for the army to fully deploy in the south under the framework agreement.
