Three Swedish Men Arrested in Thailand Over Darknet Drugs

BANGKOK — Three Swedish men have been arrested in Thailand following a multinational crackdown on a transnational network accused of running online drug markets on the darknet, in an operation that spanned multiple countries and continents.

Officers from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), working with police in Sweden and Australia, carried out raids on Friday at nine locations in Bangkok and Prachuap Khiri Khan under “Operation Pandora,” the chief of CIB announced on Saturday.

The Suspects

Authorities arrested three Swedish nationals: R. M. L., 47; D. L., 39; and J. A. G., 33, who were allegedly linked to an international drug-trafficking syndicate. Investigators believe the suspects used rented luxury pool villas as bases to remotely manage online drug distribution, operating from Thailand while coordinating illegal sales across Europe and Australia.

Police seized 119 items of evidence, including computers, mobile phones, credit cards, and documents that will be analyzed as part of the ongoing investigation.

Long-Term Residents

Mr. L., arrested at a rented house in Bangkok’s Wang Thonglang district, had lived in Thailand for approximately 13 years, indicating deep roots in the kingdom. The other suspects were detained at a rented residence in Prachuap Khiri Khan after staying in Thailand for three and four years respectively.

Darknet Platforms

Police said Swedish and Australian authorities had requested Thailand’s assistance in locating the suspects, who were believed to be key figures behind two darknet platforms. The sites controlled more than 80 percent of the European online drug market and facilitated shipments to Australia, making them significant players in the global illegal narcotics trade.

European police had earlier seized more than 1,000 kilograms of drugs linked to the network before tracing connections to the three men hiding in Thailand, demonstrating the international coordination required to dismantle such sophisticated operations.

Parallel Operations

Parallel operations were also conducted in several European countries, leading to a total of 13 arrests and the seizure of assets worth more than 100 million baht. The coordinated effort highlights the growing effectiveness of international law enforcement cooperation in targeting darknet criminal enterprises.

Legal Proceedings

Mr. Lind denied the charges and was handed over to investigators for legal proceedings and possible deportation. The other two suspects were transferred to the Immigration Bureau’s detention center in Bangkok as inquiries into the case continue.

The arrests mark another significant victory for Thai immigration authorities in preventing the kingdom from becoming a safe haven for international fugitives and transnational criminal networks operating in the digital underground.

Bukhari added that political tensions could ease if the opposition reduced its rhetoric. “If the political temperature comes down from the other side, we will also respond in the same manner,” she said. Taking aim at the Sindh government’s healthcare system, Bukhari questioned why senior leaders and ministers from the province travelled abroad for medical treatment if the healthcare facilities in Sindh were as effective as the PPP claimed. She also highlighted the Punjab government’s focus on southern Punjab, saying Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had given the region special attention and was working to improve development and public services there. Bukhari further accused the PPP of adopting different standards when discussing political and administrative issues. She said the party frequently used the southern Punjab issue as a political card while opposing similar demands for the creation of new administrative units in Sindh. The Punjab information minister argued that the PPP should maintain consistency in its political position and apply the same principles to administrative reforms across the country.

    The D-8 Health Summit 2026 begins today at the Karachi Expo Centre, bringing together representatives from the eight Developing Islamic Countries (D-8) to strengthen cooperation in the health sector. The three-day summit will continue until July 25. The international event is being organised jointly by the Ibn Sina Institute, the World Aging Council, and the Karachi Healthcare Expo and Conference. This year’s theme is “Healthy and Age-Friendly D-8 Countries.” The summit will focus on a wide range of healthcare issues, including health diplomacy, the challenges of an ageing population, preventive healthcare, healthy longevity, medical tourism, digital health, the impact of climate change on public health, and sustainable healthcare policies. A key highlight of the summit will be a keynote address by renowned gerontologist Dr Kamal Aydin. He will speak on “Global Health and Aging Diplomacy: A Future Vision for D-8 Countries,” presenting recommendations to promote international cooperation for developing healthy and age-friendly cities, particularly in the context of COP31. Dr Aydin, who completed his education at the University of the Punjab in 1996, has maintained close academic and professional links with Pakistan throughout his career. He is attending this year’s summit as President of the D-8 Health Summit 2026 and the honorary chief guest of the Karachi Healthcare Expo and Conference. In his message, Dr Aydin said it was a great honour to return to Pakistan, a country he considers his second home. He said it was gratifying to see the vision behind the Ibn Sina Institute and the World Aging Council, established nearly three decades ago, evolve into an international platform promoting global cooperation in health and ageing.
