Iran warns countries helping US they could also be…

TEHRAN/BISHKEK: Iran has issued a stern warning to countries that may support any future US military action against the Islamic Republic, saying states that assist or facilitate such operations could also face consequences and be held responsible under international law.

The warning came as Iranian officials claimed that a US missile strike targeted a naval headquarters belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the country’s northern Gilan province, although the allegation has not been independently verified.

Speaking at a regional meeting in Bishkek, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said any country participating in, assisting or enabling military aggression against Iran would bear legal and political responsibility under international law.

“Those who cooperate with or facilitate any act of aggression against Iran will be held accountable,” Araghchi said, adding that Tehran reserves the right to take all necessary measures to defend its sovereignty and national security.

His remarks underscore the increasingly confrontational rhetoric between Tehran and Washington amid heightened regional tensions and fears of further military escalation.

Meanwhile, Iran’s state news agency IRNA quoted Gilan Deputy Governor Ali Bagheri as saying that US missiles struck an IRGC Navy headquarters located in the coastal area of Zibakenar early Friday morning.

According to Iranian officials, the attack damaged equipment inside the military installation. However, authorities said there were no immediate reports of casualties and did not provide additional operational details about the extent of the damage.

The United States has not officially responded to Iran’s allegations, and no independent sources have confirmed that such a strike took place.

The competing claims come as tensions between the two longtime rivals continue to intensify following a series of military confrontations and accusations exchanged in recent weeks.

Regional security analysts warn that increasingly aggressive statements from both Tehran and Washington could further complicate the security environment across the Middle East, particularly if neighboring countries become involved in the dispute.

Experts say Iran’s latest warning appears aimed at discouraging regional allies from providing logistical, intelligence or military support to any potential US operation. Such statements also signal Tehran’s intention to broaden accountability beyond direct military participants should hostilities escalate.

Diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions have so far produced little visible progress, while both sides continue to exchange sharp warnings and accusations.

With neither Washington nor Tehran showing signs of softening their positions, concerns remain that the already fragile regional security landscape could deteriorate further, increasing the risk of a broader confrontation involving additional regional actors.

Child’s refusal to buckle up leads to flight cancellation in Canada

A Porter Airlines flight from Victoria to Toronto was cancelled after a young child refused to sit in the assigned seat and fasten the seat belt. The incident happened on flight PD444 at Victoria International Airport in British Columbia. The aircraft had already left the terminal. It was preparing for takeoff when crew members noticed the child standing on the seat. Flight attendants tried to resolve the situation. The child’s parents also attempted to convince the youngster to sit down. However, the child continued to resist. The crew could not proceed with the flight while the safety issue remained unresolved. Aviation safety rules require passengers to remain seated and use seat belts when instructed. The aircraft therefore had to return to the terminal. The family was removed from the plane. Their baggage also had to be taken off the aircraft. Airport and airline staff then had to complete the required travel and security procedures. The process took considerable time. The procedures continued beyond 12:30am. Victoria International Airport closes its main runway at 12:30am every night. Because the runway had already closed, the aircraft could not take off again that night. The cancellation caused further inconvenience for the other passengers. They were forced to spend the night in Victoria. Porter Airlines apologised to the affected passengers for the disruption. The airline arranged alternative flights for them the following day. The incident highlights how even a seemingly minor safety issue can cause major delays when an aircraft is preparing for departure. Airlines are required to ensure that all passengers follow safety instructions before takeoff

Gold prices hold near two-month high as traders await US PPI data

Gold prices remained largely stable near their highest level in more than two months on Thursday, as investors paused to assess the metal’s recent gains following softer-than-expected signals from US inflation data. Spot gold was trading at around $4,408.55 per ounce by 0336 GMT, little changed from the previous session. The precious metal had earlier climbed nearly 1%, reaching its highest level since June 5. Meanwhile, US gold futures for December delivery were broadly steady at $4,467 per ounce. The latest movement came after gold staged a strong rally following the release of US consumer inflation figures. Investors are now turning their attention to the US Producer Price Index (PPI), due later on Thursday, which could provide further indications about the direction of monetary policy and interest rates. Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade, said gold was undergoing a period of consolidation after its gains following the consumer price data. He noted that expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike had weakened further, while traders were waiting for the PPI report before making significant new moves in the market. US Inflation Cools Market sentiment was influenced by Wednesday’s US Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures, which showed that inflation moderated for a second consecutive month on an annual basis. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, consumer prices increased 3.4% in the 12 months through July, compared with a 3.5% rise in June. The reading was broadly in line with economists’ expectations. The data reduced expectations that the Federal Reserve would move toward higher interest rates in the near term. Market participants are now closely monitoring incoming economic indicators to determine whether price pressures are continuing to ease. According to the CME FedWatch Tool, traders were pricing in roughly a 40% probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike at the September meeting, down from approximately 54% a week earlier. Lower Rate Expectations Support Gold Gold generally benefits when expectations for interest rates decline because lower rates reduce the opportunity cost of holding the non-yielding precious metal. The shift in expectations has therefore provided additional support to bullion, although investors remain cautious ahead of further inflation data. The upcoming PPI report is expected to play an important role in determining whether the recent moderation in consumer inflation is also reflected at the producer level. A weaker-than-expected reading could further reinforce expectations for a less aggressive Federal Reserve stance, potentially providing additional momentum to gold. Conversely, stronger producer inflation could revive concerns about persistent price pressures and limit gains in the precious metals market. Geopolitical Risks Remain in Focus Investors are also keeping an eye on geopolitical developments, particularly tensions between Iran and the United States. A senior Iranian source said Tehran and Washington remained divided over efforts to reach a permanent agreement to end the conflict in the Gulf. According to the source, there had been no significant progress in negotiations aimed at reviving an interim agreement reached in June. Continued geopolitical uncertainty can contribute to demand for safe-haven assets such as gold, although market participants remain focused primarily on monetary policy and economic data. Other Precious Metals Elsewhere in the precious metals market, spot silver rose around 0.3% to $65.47 per ounce. Silver had reached its highest level since June 22 during the previous session. Platinum prices declined 0.4% to $1,749.70 per ounce, while palladium fell 0.5% to $1,362.10.

US report urges Pakistan to open up budget and deb…

WASHINGTON: Pakistan needs to improve transparency in its public finances and give Parliament and citizens earlier access to key budget and debt information, according to a new US State Department assessment. The department’s 2026 Fiscal Transparency Report said Pakistan had made progress in making financial information publicly available but still faced important gaps, particularly in the timely release of its proposed budget and disclosure of government liabilities. The report noted that Pakistan’s approved budget and year-end financial reports were easily accessible to the public, including online. However, it found that the government did not release its executive budget proposal within a reasonable timeframe. According to the assessment, publishing the proposed budget earlier would give lawmakers and the public more time to examine the government’s spending and revenue priorities before the document is formally approved. The report also raised concerns over limited public information about government debt, especially liabilities linked to major state-owned enterprises. Greater disclosure, it said, would help provide a clearer picture of the country’s financial position and allow Parliament to better assess potential fiscal risks. Despite these shortcomings, the US assessment acknowledged that Pakistan’s publicly available budget documents contained substantial information on planned government revenues and expenditures, including income from natural resources. Pakistan’s auditing system also received a largely positive assessment. The report said financial information was generally reliable and subject to review by the country’s supreme audit institution, which it found to have an appropriate level of independence under international standards. Audit findings were also made available to the public within a reasonable period. The report found that Pakistan had established legal procedures for awarding natural resource extraction contracts and licences and appeared to follow those rules in practice. It also noted that information on public procurement contracts was accessible and described the legal framework governing the country’s sovereign wealth fund as sound. The State Department identified three major areas where Pakistan could further strengthen fiscal transparency: releasing the executive budget proposal on time, providing more detailed information about government debt, including state-owned enterprise liabilities, and bringing military and intelligence budgets under adequate parliamentary or civilian oversight. Overall, the report did not portray Pakistan’s financial system as broadly opaque. Instead, it recognised several areas of progress while calling for stronger parliamentary scrutiny and greater disclosure of information that could help lawmakers and the public understand the country’s fiscal risks.

Pakistan targets $1.5bn hybrid rice market in Chin…

Pakistan has a major opportunity to increase its hybrid rice exports to China and could potentially secure exports worth up to $1.5 billion, according to industry experts. The opportunity has emerged as China looks for alternative sources of non-Basmati rice amid a decline in rice trade with India. Pakistani exporters believe the changing market conditions could allow the country to expand its presence in China. Shahzad Ali Malik, founding chairman of the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) and CEO of Guard Agricultural Research and Services, said Pakistan should move quickly to take advantage of the situation. He said Pakistan had a competitive edge because local farmers already grow Chinese hybrid rice varieties. With a coordinated strategy between the government and private sector, Pakistan could significantly increase its exports to the Chinese market. China is expected to remain one of the world’s largest rice importers. Its rice import demand for 2025-26 has been estimated at around 3.1 million tonnes. India had previously been an important supplier of non-Basmati rice to China. However, changes in Chinese import requirements and non-tariff restrictions have affected Indian rice shipments. This has created an opening for other suppliers. Pakistan is considered well placed to benefit because it already produces both Basmati and non-Basmati rice. Pakistan also has surplus stocks of several non-Basmati varieties. These include Chinese hybrid rice and IRRI varieties that are used in China for food processing and strategic food reserves. The hybrid rice segment offers particular potential. Pakistan uses hybrid seed parent lines imported from China. This could make it easier for Pakistani producers and Chinese buyers to maintain compatibility in varieties and quality standards. Pakistan also has an advantage in the non-GMO segment. Industry representatives believe this could strengthen the country’s position as Chinese buyers become more selective about imported rice. The Pakistan-China Free Trade Agreement could further support exports. Existing trade links and CPEC-related logistics may also help Pakistani exporters reduce transportation time and improve their competitiveness. The changing market could benefit both exporters and farmers. Lower competition from India may increase demand for Pakistani rice and could improve prices. Chinese buyers may also seek long-term contracts and assured supplies. Such arrangements could provide farmers with greater market certainty and encourage investment in rice production. However, industry experts say Pakistan must improve its export systems to take full advantage of the opportunity. The government and private sector will need to work together on contract farming, seed quality, certification and food safety requirements. Chinese authorities have strict standards for food safety and pesticide residues. Pakistani exporters will therefore need to ensure that rice consistently meets the required specifications. Seed companies can also play an important role. Improved hybrid seeds could increase yields per acre while helping farmers produce rice of consistent quality. Logistics will be another key factor. Industry representatives believe Pakistan’s ports and CPEC-linked infrastructure could help shorten delivery times and reduce costs. Rice is one of Pakistan’s most important export commodities and ranks second after textiles. An increase in rice exports could generate additional foreign exchange and provide greater economic opportunities for farmers, particularly in Punjab and Sindh. Malik estimated that Pakistan could increase its overall rice exports to around $5 billion within three to five years if the necessary planning, investment and policy support are provided. He also proposed establishing a Pakistan-China Rice Export Task Force. The proposed body could include rice exporters, seed companies and relevant government authorities. The task force could develop a long-term export strategy, coordinate with Chinese buyers and address regulatory and logistical challenges.

Spider-Man tops Endgame box office record

Avengers directors Joe and Anthony Russo have congratulated the team behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day after the film surpassed one of Avengers: Endgame’s biggest domestic box office records. The filmmakers shared a public message on social media, praising the cast and crew after the latest Spider-Man film crossed the $1 billion mark globally and achieved the highest domestic opening weekend in box office history, overtaking the long-standing record previously held by Avengers: Endgame. In their message, the Russo brothers congratulated director Destin Daniel Cretton, lead actors Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, along with producers and the entire production team. They described the achievement as a historic moment and declared that “the gauntlet has been passed,” referencing Marvel’s iconic Infinity Gauntlet. Although Spider-Man: Brand New Day has broken several records set by Endgame, it has not yet become the fastest film to earn $1 billion worldwide, leaving that milestone intact. Industry observers believe the competition could intensify later this year when Marvel releases Avengers: Doomsday, directed by the Russo brothers. The highly anticipated superhero film is expected to arrive in cinemas in December and is already being viewed as a potential record-breaking blockbuster. The success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day has further strengthened the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with strong audience turnout and impressive global ticket sales continuing to drive its performance at the box office.

Salman Khan faces court summons over jewellery business dispute

Salman Khan and his sister Alvira Khan Agnihotri have been summoned by a Chandigarh court in connection with a legal dispute involving a Being Human jewellery showroom. The case stems from a complaint filed by Chandigarh-based businessman Arun Gupta, who alleged that he suffered significant financial losses after investing in a jewellery franchise associated with the Being Human brand. According to the complaint, Gupta invested nearly ₹3 crore to establish a Being Human jewellery showroom in Manimajra, Chandigarh, in 2018. He claimed that the agreement with Style and Content Jewellery Private Limited included assurances of business support, promotional assistance, and other commitments necessary for the successful operation of the showroom. Gupta stated that he fulfilled all the conditions outlined in the agreement and spent approximately ₹1 crore on setting up the outlet. However, he alleged that the promised support from the company never materialized, making it difficult for the business to operate effectively. He further claimed that the lack of assistance led to financial difficulties and eventually affected the showroom’s operations. The businessman also alleged that the jewellery store ceased operations in February 2020, disrupting the supply of products and causing substantial monetary losses. According to the complaint, the closure left him unable to continue business as planned, resulting in heavy financial damage. Another key allegation in the complaint relates to the showroom’s inauguration. Gupta claimed that he had been informed Salman Khan would personally inaugurate the outlet, which was expected to attract customers and generate publicity for the business. However, instead of the Bollywood superstar, the event was reportedly attended by Salman Khan’s brother-in-law, Aayush Sharma. The complaint names Salman Khan, Alvira Khan Agnihotri, and several others associated with Style and Content Jewellery Private Limited. After reviewing the matter, the Chandigarh court issued summons directing the accused to appear before it on October 5 for further proceedings. Meanwhile, Style and Content Jewellery Private Limited has strongly denied the allegations. The company maintained that Salman Khan had no direct involvement in the agreement signed with the Chandigarh businessman. It clarified that the Being Human brand had been licensed to the company by the Salman Khan Foundation in 2015, giving it the authority to manage and operate the jewellery business independently. The company further stated that all operational and commercial responsibilities related to the jewellery venture rested solely with Style and Content Jewellery Private Limited, not Salman Khan personally. The case will now proceed before the Chandigarh court, where the parties are expected to present their arguments when the matter comes up for hearing on October 5.
