BUENOS AIRES: Football icon Lionel Messi has become the subject of an unexpected political prediction after a Chinese academic claimed the Argentine superstar could become the country’s president within the next five years, a suggestion that has quickly gone viral across social media.

The prediction was made by Chinese analyst and academic Jiang Xueqin during an interview on controversial online content creator Sneako’s Kick streaming platform. During the discussion, Jiang argued that Messi’s immense popularity could propel him into Argentina’s highest political office if he ever decided to enter public life.

According to Jiang, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner would not only win a presidential election comfortably but could also remain in office for as long as two decades because of the extraordinary public affection he enjoys.

“He is so admired that people would continue to support him even if he made mistakes,” Jiang suggested during the interview, a remark that quickly drew mixed reactions from football fans and political observers alike.

The prediction comes at a time when Messi continues to cement his legendary status in world football. At the age of 39, he recently captained Argentina to a second consecutive FIFA World Cup final, extending one of the most remarkable international careers in football history.

Although Argentina fell to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, Messi’s performances throughout the tournament once again earned widespread praise. Many supporters believe his influence on Argentine football remains unmatched, despite the disappointing result in the championship match.

The speculation has fueled lively discussions online, with some fans embracing the idea as an interesting possibility while others dismissed it as little more than a fanciful prediction. Police said the suspects fled the scene before law enforcement personnel arrived. The incident reportedly occurred during a party meeting at MQM-P’s central office. According to police, tensions escalated after the meeting ended, leading to a confrontation between supporters of different party factions. Officials said workers belonging to one faction allegedly assaulted members of the rival group and forced them out of the party headquarters. Heavy gunfire was also reported from inside the premises, causing alarm among nearby residents.

Referring to the military confrontation with India in May 2025, Shehbaz Sharif praised the armed forces for their role and said the country’s response had demonstrated Pakistan’s determination to defend its territorial integrity and national interests.     Pakistan raises power tariff by Rs0.75 per unit

    Pakistan’s power regulator has approved a Rs0.75 per unit increase in electricity prices for consumers across the country under the monthly fuel cost adjustment mechanism. According to a notification issued by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), the revised tariff applies to the June 2026 monthly fuel cost adjustment. The increase will also affect consumers of K-Electric, with the additional charges appearing in August electricity bills. Earlier, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) had requested a Rs1.20 per unit increase for June’s adjustment. However, after reviewing the proposal, NEPRA approved a lower increase of Rs0.75 per unit. The latest adjustment follows another tariff hike announced for May, when electricity prices increased by Rs0.34 per unit under the same monthly adjustment mechanism. Monthly fuel cost adjustments allow authorities to revise electricity tariffs based on fluctuations in fuel prices and the cost of power generation. These revisions can either increase or reduce consumer bills depending on changes in generation expenses.
