Water level rises in the Chenab river, flooding se…

The Irrigation Department has reported a significant increase in the water flow of the Chenab River, raising concerns about flooding in nearby riverine areas. According to officials, the rising water level has already affected several low-lying settlements, forcing floodwater into residential and agricultural areas and creating difficulties for local communities.

The department stated that the increase in the river’s discharge has caused water to spread into nearby villages located along the banks of the Chenab River. As a result, a protective embankment known as the Zamindara Bund in Jalalpur Pirwala Tehsil has been breached. The collapse of the embankment has allowed floodwater to move more rapidly into surrounding areas, increasing the risk to people, homes, livestock, and crops.

According to the Irrigation Department, at least five villages have been submerged due to the rising floodwaters. Among the affected settlements are Basti Khuda Bakhsh, Basti Allah Rakha, and Basti Bakhsha, along with two other nearby villages. Residents in these areas are facing severe challenges as water continues to enter homes, farmland, and local roads. Many families are concerned about the safety of their property and the possibility of further flooding if water levels continue to rise.

Officials have also reported that water levels have increased in the surroundings of Head Muhammad Wala Road and near Qasim Bela. These areas are being closely monitored as authorities assess the situation and evaluate the potential for additional flooding. The rise in water has affected transportation routes, making travel difficult for residents and increasing the need for precautionary measures.

The Irrigation Department is keeping a close watch on the river’s flow and is expected to continue monitoring the situation in coordination with local administration and disaster management authorities. Residents living in vulnerable riverine areas have been advised to remain alert and follow official instructions. If water levels continue to increase, further evacuations and emergency measures may become necessary to ensure public safety.

Flooding in the Chenab River region is a recurring challenge during the monsoon season, particularly when heavy rainfall upstream leads to a sudden increase in river discharge. Breaches in protective embankments can significantly worsen the situation by allowing water to spread rapidly into populated areas. Such incidents often result in damage to homes, agricultural land, and infrastructure, while also disrupting daily life and economic activities.

Local authorities are expected to assess the extent of the damage once water levels stabilize. Relief efforts may include providing temporary shelter, food, clean drinking water, and medical assistance to affected families. The government and emergency response agencies are likely to continue monitoring weather conditions and river flows to reduce further risks.

The situation remains under observation, and officials have urged residents in flood-prone areas to stay informed through official updates and cooperate with emergency responders. Authorities are working to minimize the impact of the flooding and ensure the safety of communities living along the Chenab River.

Thousands Sahiwal villagers demand steel bridge at…

SAHIWAL: Residents of villages 76/5-R, 77/5-R and 74/5-R have renewed their demand for a steel overhead bridge at 77 Wali Pully. They saying the long-standing absence of a safe railway crossing has turned a routine journey into a daily hazard for thousands of people. The three villages are home to an estimated 20,000 to 23,000 people. Residents say the proposed bridge would provide a safe route for pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and rickshaws to cross the Lower Bari Doab Canal (LBDC) and the double-track Lahore-Khanewal railway line. They also demand improving access to the Lahore-Multan National Highway and markets in Yousafwala, Qadirabad and Sahiwal. The demand has been raised repeatedly with the district administration, Pakistan Railways, Punjab government and local PML-N parliamentarians since the 1,320MW Sahiwal coal-fired power plant became operational in 2017. Official records confirm that the plant is located near Qadirabad and that its commercial operations began in October 2017. Before the power plant was built, villagers had two traditional routes to Yousafwala and Qadirabad markets. One was through the railway crossing near Yousafwala Railway Station, which allowed light and heavy traffic to pass. The other, locally known as “77 Wali Pully”, involved crossing the LBDC by wire-boat before walking across the railway tracks. Tehzeeb, an LHV from village 76/5-R, said the second route had been used for three to four decades, particularly by women and pedestrians. Rickshaws operated on both sides of the canal and railway line, helping commuters reach nearby villages and markets. However, following the power plant’s development, the railway crossing was closed for public use and traffic was diverted to a new route several kilometres away. A concrete bridge was constructed over the LBDC, but no corresponding crossing was provided over the double railway track. “This challenge of crossing the railway line remains unresolved,” said Sadique, a resident of 76/5-R. Villagers say more than 1,000 people, including students, women, elderly residents, traders and labourers, cross the area on foot every day, often facing the danger of fast-moving trains. Pir Imran Shah, a former four-time MNA, said he had twice forwarded the villagers’ proposal to Pakistan Railways, but it did not progress to the PC-I stage. Residents working through the Model Village Welfare Committee have now renewed their appeal. Najam Lumberdar of 77/5-R said the bridge would eliminate a lengthy detour and provide safer access to markets and Sahiwal city. A local civil society representative also described the demand as genuine, noting that similar pedestrian and motorcycle bridges have been constructed elsewhere. Dawn has learnt that Pir Imran Shah has again forwarded the committee’s application to Pakistan Railways, seeking preparation of a PC-I and construction of the proposed steel bridge. For residents, the demand is simple: a safe crossing that restores the connectivity they say was lost nearly a decade ago.

Ronaldo, Georgina spark fresh wedding rumours

Cristiano Ronaldo and his fiancée Georgina Rodríguez have reignited speculation about their wedding after the couple were spotted wearing matching diamond rings during a summer getaway in Mallorca, Spain. The appearance quickly fuelled rumours that the football icon and his longtime partner may finally be preparing to tie the knot. Photographs published on Friday showed Ronaldo and Rodríguez boarding a luxury yacht with friends while enjoying their holiday in Mallorca. According to The Sun, the Portuguese superstar was seen wearing a large diamond ring on the ring finger of his left hand, a finger traditionally associated with wedding and engagement bands. Rodríguez was also photographed wearing the engagement ring Ronaldo gave her after proposing last year. The sight of both partners wearing diamond rings on their ring fingers immediately sparked fresh speculation that a wedding could be approaching. The rumours gained further momentum after an unverified notice circulated online claiming the couple planned to marry on Saturday at Quinta da Regaleira, a historic estate in Portugal. However, the claims were never officially confirmed and were later dismissed. Sources close to the couple denied the reports, pointing out that Quinta da Regaleira remained open to the public on the alleged wedding date and was scheduled to host an evening musical performance, making a private ceremony highly unlikely. Fans nevertheless continued to speculate on social media. One user on X wrote: “They have been wearing matching luxury rings for years, but hopefully this means the actual date is finally set.” Another commented: “If he still failed his promise he said, ‘the next day after the World Cup, he will propose to her with the WC trophy.’” Although neither Ronaldo nor Rodríguez has publicly commented on the latest rumours, the couple have repeatedly spoken about their commitment to one another. They have been together since 2016 and share a family with their children, while Rodríguez also helps raise Ronaldo’s older children. Ronaldo has previously addressed the topic of marriage, explaining that he intends to marry Rodríguez when the time feels right. Speaking about his future plans, he said: “I’m going to marry her because I believe it’s the right time. Not just because she’s the mother of my children, but because she’s the person I love most.” The heartfelt statement has frequently been cited by fans whenever speculation about the couple’s wedding resurfaces. For now, there has been no official confirmation that wedding plans are underway. Despite the excitement generated by the matching diamond rings, reports of an imminent ceremony remain unverified. Still, the latest photographs have once again captured the imagination of fans, many of whom hope the football superstar and his longtime partner will soon make their relationship official after years together.

Pakistan goods transport alliance announces nation…

The Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance has announced a nationwide strike beginning on August 8, warning that transport operations across the country may be significantly disrupted if the government fails to address its key demands. The announcement was made by the alliance’s president, Malik Shehzad Awan, who criticized recent government policies affecting the transport sector and called for immediate corrective measures. Speaking to the media, Malik Shehzad Awan said that transporters are facing increasing financial pressure due to the frequent fluctuations in petroleum prices. He argued that the current system of revising fuel prices on a daily basis has created uncertainty for transport businesses, making it difficult for operators to estimate transportation costs, negotiate freight rates, and manage their daily operations effectively. The alliance has demanded that the government abandon the practice of daily fuel price adjustments and instead adopt a monthly pricing mechanism for petroleum products. According to Awan, fixing fuel prices on a monthly basis would provide greater stability to the transport industry, allowing businesses to plan expenses more efficiently and reducing the uncertainty caused by continuous price changes. He maintained that predictable fuel costs are essential for sustaining commercial transport services and protecting transport operators from unexpected financial losses. In addition to seeking changes in the fuel pricing policy, the alliance has also demanded the resignation of Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik. Malik Shehzad Awan expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of issues related to the petroleum sector, arguing that the concerns of transporters have not been adequately addressed. He claimed that recent policies have increased operational costs and placed an unnecessary burden on transport businesses across Pakistan. Another major demand put forward by the Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance concerns the withholding tax imposed on transport-related transactions. The alliance has urged the government to reduce the withholding tax rate from 7 percent to 2 percent, arguing that the current tax structure is excessive and has significantly increased the financial burden on transport operators. According to the alliance, lowering the tax rate would provide much-needed relief to the industry and improve the financial sustainability of transport businesses, particularly small and medium-sized operators. The transport sector plays a critical role in Pakistan’s economy, serving as the backbone of the country’s supply chain by moving goods between manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, and consumers. A nationwide strike by transporters could disrupt the movement of essential commodities, industrial raw materials, agricultural products, and imported goods, potentially affecting businesses and consumers alike if the dispute remains unresolved. The alliance has called on the federal government to engage in meaningful dialogue with transport representatives before the scheduled strike date. Its leadership has urged policymakers to reconsider the current fuel pricing mechanism and taxation policies in order to prevent disruption to trade and commercial activities. The transporters maintain that their demands are aimed at ensuring the long-term sustainability of the sector rather than creating difficulties for the public. If negotiations do not produce a satisfactory outcome, the Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance has indicated that transporters across the country will proceed with the nationwide strike on August 8. The proposed shutdown is expected to affect freight services on major highways and commercial routes, potentially disrupting the supply of goods and increasing pressure on businesses dependent on road transport. The alliance has expressed hope that the government will address its concerns before the strike begins, allowing transport operations to continue without interruption.
