WhatsApp tests new birthday reminder feature

WhatsApp is developing a new feature that will remind users of their contacts birthdays similar to the birthday reminders available on Facebook.

According to a report by WABetaInfo, the birthday reminder feature is currently being tested in the beta version of WhatsApp for Android. The feature is designed to help users keep track of the birthdays of their friends and family directly within WhatsApp eliminating the need to rely on separate calendar applications.

Under the new feature, users will receive notifications when one of their saved contacts has a birthday. The notification will allow users to open the chat instantly and send birthday wishes directly through WhatsApp.

The report also revealed that WhatsApp is working on a dedicated “Birthdays” section within the app. This page will display the birthdays of saved contacts in one place making it easier for users to view and manage important dates.

According to the report, the birthday reminder will only work if a contact has added their date of birth to their WhatsApp profile. If a friend or family member has not provided their birthday information in WhatsApp, no birthday reminder will be available for that contact.

WABetaInfo added that the feature is still under development and additional changes or improvements may be introduced before its public release.

    10 technologies replaced by smartphones

Smartphones are now found in almost everyone’s hands but their rise has also rendered many once-popular technologies obsolete. At the beginning of the 21st century, personal computers, home internet and mobile phones became widely accessible. Few could have imagined that, within a few years, all these technologies would merge into a single device that would transform nearly every aspect of daily life. That device is the smartphone. It serves as a flashlight, bank account manager, weather forecaster, fitness tracker, camera and much more. One of the smartphone’s greatest strengths is its ability to combine multiple functions into a single, easy-to-use device. As a result, many older technologies have largely disappeared. Here are ten of them: 1. Landline phones Landline phones were among the first technologies to be replaced by smartphones. Once common in nearly every home, they have become largely unnecessary because smartphones provide calling capabilities along with numerous internet-based communication apps. 2. Digital cameras Between 2008 and 2021, sales of compact digital cameras declined by more than 97 percent. Modern smartphones feature increasingly advanced cameras eliminating the need for many people to purchase separate digital cameras. 3. Calculators Pocket calculators were once essential tools for students and professionals. Today, every smartphone includes a built-in calculator while dedicated apps can solve even complex mathematical problems. 4. Alarm clocks Traditional alarm clocks have become much less common because smartphones include customizable alarm features allowing users to choose sounds, adjust volume and set multiple alarms. They also function as clocks reducing the need for separate timepieces. 5. Walkie-talkies Walkie-talkies were widely used in workplaces for instant communication. Smartphones now offer voice calls, messaging and group chats providing far more advanced communication options. 6. MP3 players Before smartphones, MP3 players were the preferred way to listen to music. Smartphones now allow users to store songs or stream millions of tracks through music apps without downloading them. 7. Radios Radio was once the primary source of music and news. Today, smartphones can stream live radio stations as well as podcasts and online audio services. 8. Compact Discs (CDs) CD sales peaked in 2002 and remained popular even after the arrival of devices like the iPod. However, smartphones and online streaming services have largely eliminated the need for physical music discs. 9. GPS devices Dedicated GPS navigation systems were once common in vehicles. Today, smartphones include built-in GPS sensors and navigation apps such as Google Maps making standalone GPS devices largely unnecessary. 10. Feature phones Basic mobile phones were once highly desirable and even considered status symbols. However, smartphones have almost completely replaced them leaving feature phones with only a small share of the market.

  • Instagram introduces music replacement for old posts

Instagram has introduced a new “Replace Audio” feature that allows users to change the music in their previously published feed posts. In a statement, Meta said the new update enables users to replace the soundtrack of an existing post without affecting its likes, comments, shares or overall reach. With the new feature, they can simply replace the audio while keeping the original post intact. To use the feature, users need to open a previously published post, tap the menu in the top-right corner and select “Edit.” They will then see an option to replace the existing audio. Mark Zuckerberg predicts billions will use AI agents within 5 years

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made a striking prediction about the future of artificial intelligence (AI) saying that billions of people will have their own personal AI agents within the next few years. Speaking during the release of Meta’s quarterly earnings report, Zuckerberg predicted that over the next five years, billions of people around the world will be using personal AI agents. “I think it’s almost impossible to imagine a future where, within the next five years, billions of people don’t have their own AI agents. Zuckerberg added that people will use these AI agents to manage their finances, monitor their health, assist with relationships and handle household tasks. “We’re moving toward a future where every person will use multiple AI agents. I believe WhatsApp and other messaging services will become even more important,” he said. According to Zuckerberg, WhatsApp is already the leading platform for interacting with Meta AI. Meta is not the only company investing heavily in AI systems capable of acting autonomously on behalf of users. Google is also focusing on custom AI agents while several other technology companies are developing similar systems. • Google introduces selfie video verification for account login

Google has introduced a new selfie video sign-in feature for account recovery. With this feature, users will be able to use a short video of themselves to log in to or recover their accounts. The purpose of this new feature is to help prevent issues such as deepfake-based fraud and account hacking. While announcing the selfie video verification feature, Google said that it has been designed as an alternative sign-in method. It can also be used for account recovery when other traditional login methods are not available. To use this feature, users will have to record a short video of themselves. Google will securely store this video recording and later, live videos will be used to verify the user’s identity during the sign-in process. During login, users will have to move their heads in real time so that attempts to use deepfake videos or static images for fraud can be prevented. Google further stated that the stored video will be protected through encryption and users will be able to delete their selfie video at any time from their account dashboard. The rollout of this feature has started and it will gradually become available worldwide. To access this feature, users need to go to their Google Account Settings, select Security & Sign-in and then choose Selfie Video. After that, users will need to use their phone or computer camera and follow the on-screen instructions including moving their head as directed.

  • YouTube app ends support for Android 6 phones

YouTube is the world’s most popular video-sharing service watched by billions of people every day. The YouTube app is widely used on smartphones but some users will soon no longer be able to use it on their devices. Google is ending YouTube app support and access for smartphones running the Android 6 operating system. After the end of July 2026, Android 7 or later will be required to watch YouTube through the app on Android phones. It is important to note that YouTube will not suddenly stop working on affected phones nor will all data be deleted. Instead, phones running Android 6 will gradually begin experiencing problems. When users open the app, they may see a message saying “Switch to YouTube” after which they will be redirected to the mobile YouTube website through their phone’s browser. The main reason for this change is that YouTube is constantly being updated while new features may not work properly on older operating systems. For this reason, Google is ending YouTube support for Android 6 smartphones. If you are using an older Android phone and lose access to the YouTube app, you can still watch YouTube through its website using a browser. Another solution is to switch to a newer smartphone that supports the YouTube app.

Google marks Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day with special Doodle

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day has received a colourful digital tribute from Google, which replaced its familiar homepage logo with a special Doodle inspired by the country’s national colours. The special artwork appeared on Google’s Pakistan homepage on Friday, August 14, adding a digital touch to celebrations taking place across the country and among Pakistani communities around the world. Instead of the company’s usual multicoloured “Google” logo, users visiting the search engine in Pakistan were greeted with a design reflecting the green and white colours of the national flag. The simple but eye-catching tribute has brought Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations to one of the world’s most visited digital platforms, allowing millions of users to see the national-day themed artwork while using Google’s search service. A digital salute to Pakistan Google regularly creates special Doodles to mark national days, historic milestones, cultural occasions, achievements and notable personalities around the world. These temporary artworks replace or transform the company’s standard logo and often incorporate symbols associated with the occasion being commemorated. For Pakistan’s Independence Day this year, Google has continued that tradition with a design centred on the country’s national identity. The appearance of the Doodle comes as Pakistanis across the country celebrate August 14 with flag-hoisting ceremonies, patriotic songs, cultural events and public gatherings. From Islamabad and Lahore to Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta, streets, homes and public buildings have been decorated with the green and white colours of Pakistan. The digital tribute also gives the country’s large overseas community another reason to celebrate, with Pakistanis living in different parts of the world marking the occasion through social media, community events and family gatherings. Not Google’s first Pakistan tribute Google’s recognition of Pakistan’s Independence Day is not a new tradition. Over the years, the technology giant has marked Pakistan-related occasions with Doodles featuring elements of the country’s history, culture, architecture, art and natural heritage. Past designs have highlighted national symbols, historic landmarks and distinctive aspects of Pakistani identity, bringing them to a global online audience. The Doodles have become more than simple changes to a search-page logo. For many users, they offer a brief visual reminder of an important national occasion while connecting local celebrations with the wider digital world. This year’s green-and-white design carries a similarly simple message: Pakistan’s Independence Day is being celebrated not only on streets and public squares but also across the digital landscape. As the country marks 79 years of independence, Google’s colourful tribute has added a modern, global dimension to a day rooted in Pakistan’s history, identity and national pride.
