Will Scharf named Trump’s new White House counsel

US President Donald Trump has appointed Will Scharf as the next White House counsel and assistant to the president.

Scharf, who currently serves as White House staff secretary, will take over the legal post on September 1, 2026. He will replace David Warrington, who is set to leave the administration and enter the private sector.

Scharf is a lawyer and political adviser with close ties to Trump. Before joining the White House, he represented Trump in several major legal matters. He was also involved in the presidential immunity case that reached the US Supreme Court.

Scharf previously worked as a federal prosecutor. He also served as a law clerk for federal appeals court judges, giving him experience in both government and federal litigation.

His new position will place him at the centre of the Trump administration’s legal strategy. As White House counsel, Scharf will advise the president on legal issues and oversee matters involving executive privilege, judicial appointments and relations with the Justice Department.

He will also be involved in responding to legal challenges facing the administration. The position is considered particularly important as Trump prepares for growing political and legal pressure ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Scharf joined Trump’s legal team in 2023. He worked on the federal election interference case brought by former Special Counsel Jack Smith. His involvement continued as the case reached the Supreme Court.

In 2024, the Supreme Court ruled that presidents have broad immunity from criminal prosecution for official acts. The decision became a major development in the legal battles surrounding Trump.

After Trump returned to the White House in January 2025, Scharf was appointed staff secretary. In that role, he managed documents and other materials sent to the president for review. He also frequently appeared with Trump during executive-order signing ceremonies.

Scharf has also chaired the National Capital Planning Commission. During his tenure, he was involved in the approval process for Trump’s proposed White House ballroom project, which has faced controversy and scrutiny.

His appointment comes at a politically sensitive time for the administration. The White House is dealing with legal and political challenges while preparing for increased congressional scrutiny before the midterm elections.

Trump praised Scharf after announcing the appointment. He described him as “tough, strong, and smart” and highlighted his experience as a federal prosecutor and his work on Trump’s legal cases.

    Sindh schools to follow six-day week from August 1

    The Sindh government has announced that all public and private schools across the province will observe a six-day working week from August 1. The new schedule will remain in place until further orders. An official notification issued by the School Education and Literacy Department confirmed that schools will remain open from Monday to Saturday. The decision applies to all educational institutions operating under the department’s administrative control. The announcement comes as schools prepare to reopen after the end of summer vacations. Educational institutions remained closed for two months, with the holiday period running from June 1 to July 31. Students and teachers will now return to classrooms under the revised weekly schedule. Officials said the six-day week has been introduced to ensure smooth academic activities and improve the pace of teaching. The move is expected to help schools complete the academic calendar on time and make up for learning time lost due to previous disruptions. The decision applies equally to government and private schools throughout Sindh. School administrations have been instructed to implement the revised timetable immediately after reopening. Earlier this year, educational institutions in Sindh also experienced temporary closures because of regional security concerns linked to tensions in the Middle East. Schools remained closed for a brief period before normal academic activities resumed. Provincial authorities later restored regular operations while maintaining Saturday holidays. However, the latest notification has withdrawn that arrangement and introduced a six-day working week across the province. Education officials have advised parents, students and school administrations to follow the updated schedule. They said any future changes to school timings or working days will be communicated through official notifications.

    QUETTA: Earthquake tremors were felt in Zhob and Chaman districts of Balochistan, triggering panic among residents. According to the Seismological Centre, the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.8 on the Richter scale. Its depth was recorded at 15 kilometres below the Earth’s surface. The epicentre of the earthquake was located around 122 kilometres northeast of Zhob, according to the seismic monitoring authorities. The tremors were felt in several areas, causing fear and anxiety among local residents. Many people rushed out of their homes as a precautionary measure. Residents were seen reciting the Kalma Tayyaba while gathering in open areas to avoid any possible danger from the earthquake. The sudden tremors caused concern among citizens, particularly because of the possibility of aftershocks. People remained cautious and stayed outside their homes for some time. Authorities and local administration remained alert following the earthquake. Emergency services were also monitoring the situation in the affected districts. So far, no casualties or property damage have been reported as a result of the earthquake. Officials are continuing to assess the situation and monitor for any further seismic activity. Earthquakes are relatively common in parts of Balochistan because of the region’s geological setting. Authorities generally advise residents to remain calm during tremors and move to safer open areas after leaving buildings if necessary.

    The hardcore punk community is mourning the loss of one of its most influential voices. Lou Koller, the longtime frontman and co-founder of New York hardcore band Sick of It All, has died at the age of 59 following a two-year battle with esophageal adenocarcinoma. The heartbreaking news was announced by the band on July 24, just months before what would have marked the group’s 40th anniversary.  In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, Koller’s bandmates described him as a “beloved friend” and an “iconic frontman” whose energy, humor, and passion helped shape the identity of Sick of It All for nearly four decades. They remembered his ability to light up every stage with a smile and a sarcastic joke while connecting with fans from every corner of the world. The band also thanked supporters who donated to Koller’s medical fund during his illness, saying the overwhelming love made him feel deeply appreciated throughout his fight.  Born and raised in Queens, New York, Lou Koller founded Sick of It All with his younger brother, Pete Koller, in 1986. The band quickly became one of the defining acts of the New York hardcore scene, blending aggressive punk music with lyrics centered on perseverance, unity, and resilience. Their debut album, Blood, Sweat and No Tears, released in 1989, helped establish their reputation, while later records such as Scratch the Surface and Wake the Sleeping Dragon! cemented their influence on generations of punk and hardcore musicians.  Koller first revealed his cancer diagnosis in June 2024 after doctors discovered a tumor in his esophagus extending into his stomach. The illness forced Sick of It All to postpone touring while he underwent chemotherapy. In 2025, the singer joyfully announced that he had been declared cancer-free, giving fans hope that he would return to the stage. Sadly, the cancer later returned, and he resumed treatment while continuing to express gratitude for the unwavering support of his family, friends, and loyal fanbase.  Tributes have poured in from across the music world following the announcement. WWE star CM Punk, whose famous “It’s Clobberin’ Time” catchphrase was inspired by Sick of It All’s iconic song, thanked Koller for providing “the soundtrack” to his life. Fellow punk bands, including Dropkick Murphys and members of Rancid, also honored the late musician, remembering him as a genuine, kind-hearted figure who left an unforgettable mark on the hardcore community.  Though Lou Koller’s voice has been silenced, his influence on hardcore punk will continue to inspire musicians and fans for generations. His legacy lives on through the music he created, the community he helped build, and the countless lives he touched throughout an extraordinary career.
