Younis Khan says give me freedom to deliver, not power

KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan has said he is ready to serve Pakistan cricket in any capacity, provided he is given the freedom to perform his responsibilities without unnecessary interference.

Speaking to reporters in Karachi, the legendary batter said he has consistently conveyed the same message to successive Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairmen: if entrusted with a role, he should be allowed to carry it out independently.

“I have always told PCB chairmen that if you give me a role, give me the complete opportunity to do the job. Don’t tie my hands,” Younis said.

Addressing speculation that he seeks greater authority within the cricket setup, the former skipper dismissed the perception, insisting that his focus has always been on delivering results rather than acquiring power.

“I often hear people saying Younis Khan wants power. What would I do with power?” he remarked, adding that he has never pursued positions for influence but has instead emphasized the importance of professional autonomy.

Younis said that whenever he discussed working with the PCB, his only condition was to be allowed to build and develop the team according to the responsibilities assigned to him.

He also downplayed the importance of financial incentives, saying that freedom to work effectively mattered more than salary or contractual packages.

“For me, independence in my work and the ability to deliver are far more important than any package,” he said. “If I were ever to negotiate over financial matters, it would be for the player in the weakest position, not for myself.”

Reflecting on Pakistan cricket’s future, Younis expressed confidence that the national team could regain its former strength if players accepted greater responsibility and adopted a long-term mindset.

He recalled the period after the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup, when the departure of senior players created challenges but also opened opportunities for younger cricketers to step up.

“We accepted responsibility after the 2003 World Cup. If today’s players think bigger and take ownership, the results will also be bigger and more positive,” he said.

Younis’ comments come amid ongoing discussions about Pakistan cricket’s direction and the role experienced former players can play in rebuilding the national team’s competitiveness.

Mir Asif Akbar Qadri added that any negative narrative against the sacrifices of the martyrs is unacceptable. He stressed that honoring those who laid down their lives in defense of the country is a collective national responsibility and that their services should always be acknowledged with dignity and respect. The United Madaris Council also rejected any attempts to associate religious seminaries, mosques, scholars, or students with activities that are considered anti-state. According to the spokesperson, madaris and religious institutions have no connection with actions that undermine the interests of the state or threaten national stability. He explained that religious seminaries across Pakistan are dedicated to providing Islamic education, promoting moral values, and serving society through peaceful means. The council believes that these institutions play an important role in educating students, strengthening ethical values, and fostering religious harmony. The spokesperson also expressed concern over the use of the names of madaris, mosques, religious scholars, and students in political campaigns or partisan debates. He stated that involving religious institutions in political controversies is unfair and creates unnecessary misunderstandings about their role in society. According to the council, religious seminaries should not be drawn into political disputes, as doing so can damage their reputation and distract them from their educational and religious responsibilities. The organization urged all political stakeholders to avoid using the names of religious institutions to advance political narratives. The statement reaffirmed that the United Madaris Council remains committed to promoting peace, unity, religious education, and national harmony. This time, however, the familiar musical identity is largely absent, with only a brief nod to it near the end. The new soundtrack does its job but never leaves a lasting impression, making the film feel less emotionally engaging. The same issue extends to the overall filmmaking. Although the direction is polished and the screenplay keeps the story moving, neither brings enough suspense or imagination to make this chapter stand out. The mystery lacks the sense of excitement and cleverness audiences have come to expect from the series, making the adventure feel more routine than thrilling. The story follows Enola Holmes as she prepares to marry Tewkesbury in Malta. However, the celebrations are interrupted when Sherlock Holmes and Tewkesbury’s mother mysteriously disappear. Determined to uncover the truth, Enola launches another investigation with Tewkesbury and Dr. Watson. Their search uncovers secrets tied to Britain’s colonial past, leading them into dangerous territory filled with hidden motives and long-buried treasures. Millie Bobby Brown once again steps into the role of Enola with confidence and charisma, though the material gives her limited opportunities to truly shine. Louis Partridge remains a likeable presence as Tewkesbury, while Henry Cavill returns as Sherlock Holmes. However, Sherlock has noticeably less screen time than before, and his interactions with the rest of the cast are surprisingly limited, making his role feel underused. The supporting cast, including Helena Bonham Carter and Sharon Duncan-Brewster, deliver committed performances. Duncan-Brewster portrays Moriarty with theatrical flair, embracing the character’s dramatic nature. At times, however, several performances lean toward exaggerated expressions and heightened emotions, reducing the natural chemistry between characters. Visually, the film captures Malta’s scenic locations well, offering attractive backdrops for the investigation. Yet the impressive settings cannot compensate for a story that rarely generates genuine tension or surprise. Many plot developments are predictable, and the mystery lacks the clever twists that usually define Holmes-inspired adventures. The romance between Enola and Tewkesbury receives significant attention and becomes one of the film’s central emotional threads. While their relationship remains appealing, the heavy focus on romance occasionally overshadows the detective elements that made the franchise unique. Ultimately, Enola Holmes 3 is an entertaining but uninspired sequel. It offers enough familiar faces and lighthearted moments to satisfy devoted fans, but it rarely captures the wit, mystery and emotional spark that defined the earlier films. Despite competent performances and polished production values, the film settles for being serviceable rather than memorable, making it one of the weaker entries in the series.

Its walls carry a mural tradition older than most of the city’s galleries, and its slang has travelled further than most of its people have. Very little of that reaches the screen. Movement’s position is simple: Lyari does not need defending. It has never needed anyone’s permission to be interesting. Rather than beginning with a mood board, the collection begins with the place itself – its grounds and the players who never left them, its studios and cyphers, its painters who work on shutters instead of canvas. Lyari’s own language runs through the collection, from phrases like “Lyari Dil Hai Jani” to the lettering, colours and hand-drawn graphic treatment inspired by the neighbourhood itself. The LYARI anthem is not just a campaign soundtrack. It is what the streets sound like when nobody is translating them. Recorded with Eva B alongside MCs who grew up in Lyari, the anthem is written in the language those streets are actually spoken in – the slang, the cadence, the humour and the pace of a place that moves fast and does not explain itself to visitors.
