“I had a new Pinto and within a year I found a deal on a proto turbocharger set-up from a well-known Detroit area tuner. It was comparatively crude to this one without an intercooler and lots of lag. But once it spooled up, it was pretty impressive. I recall keeping pace with a 340 Duster in 2nd and 3rd gear which had the other driver wondering “WTF?!” But the tubing to the intake was a long way from the relocated carburetor and in cold weather it was really hard to start because that long…”

“When I was about 12 years old, my Mom’s cousin had one of these. He would load me, my brother, and two other younger cousins in the back with the jumper seats in the closed position. As he fishtailed down the road, the four of us would slide around on that metal flooring – back and forth, back and forth smashing into each other and the sides. Laughing all the way!!!!!!!! Probably not the safest thing to do, but we survived. – GLWA”

“Around the time this was new, I was working on a Spielberg film in Northern California. Part of his deal was to have a Pole Position arcade game provided in a dedicated office at the studio – it was just down the hall from my editing room. I figured out his schedule – while it was around, I came in early before him – and got very good at the free play!”

“I have this near identical car. Patina’d sahara, warmed over M10, goldish wheels, mint interior, same rust spots, and even the same roof rack. Out of my small fleet, this one gives me more smiles per gallon than the rest.
Having an engine done by Korman is a real nice bonus. Ray has a great shop and is a top tier engine and restoration shop. Hopefully the next new owner can show it off at At The Vintage event in Maggie Valley this weekend.”

“WOW!! This is my old car that I owned for 26 years and restored during that time. If the buyer wants to know any of the history, I can provide info for the period that I owned it. @IanC – When I sold it, I did include the Jaguar Heritage Certificate with it. Since I got it so long ago, it looks much different than the ones you get today. Hopefully, it’s still with the car. The colors are original – Opalescent Silver Blue with dark blue interior and top. I’ll be watching this one!”

“What a cherry looking little car! 1963 remains my favorite year for the Type 1 1200 Sedan and seeing one like this, in stock spec after years of well-loved ownership just makes me smile! Everyone has a VW Story and this VW has a great story all on it’s own.
I didn’t see anything mentioned about a “Birth Certificate” and, while it may be impossible to receive one before the end of the auction, this car deserves one. Per the technical data on TheSamba.com Chassis No. 5241720 would have rolled…”

“Power to weight for the win! This must about triple the horsepower from stock. I really like the angled exhaust exit and the great choice of wheels. The MOMO wheel is the finishing touch on this extremely tidy build.

“Anecdotally, I was told by the head of Porsche Museum (at the time) Dieter Labdsburger, that they took the Abarth to the wind tunnel and a standard 356, and found out that the Abarth, that they paid a lot of money for for further development in aerodynamics, was less aerodynamic than the stock version! I think this example is simply beautiful, tastefully done, and without the aerodynamic drag of the car it was trying to emulate…. but retaining the lovely engine lid. I will be watching….…”

“When I was a new pilot in a Navy Fighter Squadron, one of my favorite “older” Squadron mates used to have get togethers at his house. He had a bar in his kitchen /living room and at the end was his lucky ejection seat that he had used when he was an F-8 pilot. He had the seat built in and only HE was allowed to ever sit in that “lucky” seat! Good memories.”

“I’ve owned two of these. My first was a brand new fawn beige 283 4bbl that I drove 60,000 miles in three years. I had the dealer add GM seat belts. It was completely trouble free. Mine originally came with the spare tire tucked under the top well. About a year into it Chevrolet had a recall to move it to the right rear quarter panel are as this car shows. People were cutting the rear window and stealing the spare tires. I still have the original window sticker. A beautiful car.”
