“I worked a security detail guarding this car and the others Mr. Yamagata was painting at his Malibu studio. The cars were stored in a multi level parking garage overlooking the Pacific. All the cars were painted in various tropical scenes. Quite a sight to see all of them together.”

My father was a senior design engineer at Olds, and he was part of this design team. Brings back memories of my childhood anticipating the new car show every year to see what was new about each line, and what the taillights were going to look like with each new model year.

“This is what the first-gen Celica liftback was meant to be. We got what was spec’ed for US market, same chassis but with the big 5mph bumpers and a much lower-performance engine. The 20R is great for a truck, but 100 hp at 4800 rpm isn’t as much fun as an 18R-G140 hp at 6500 rpm in a sub-2500 lb car.

“Last summer the Eastern PA Chapter of the Audi Club did it’s annual covered bridges drive and ice cream run. A very fun and spirited ~150 mile drive. I show up in my 1989 80 Quattro, my wife drove our 2001 TT 225 Roadster, and a guy I had never seen before at any Audi event shows up in one of these. Jaws dropped. He was super nice, down to earth, and had no problem with any of us getting in and checking it out.”
