“20 or so years ago my wife and I were staying at the Cypress Inn in Carmel. One morning I got up very early, so early that the hotel staff had not begun morning preparations.
I stumbled down into the lobby and saw an elderly lady walking the other way. I asked her if she knew where I could get a cup of coffee.
She smiled a 10,000 watt smile and said there was a place around the corner, or if I wanted to wait she’d make me some.
She wasn’t in a uniform and had no name tag so not quite…”

“Not an uncommon swap in the late 1980s. I recall reading a Pontiac Magazine from that era where someone restored a ’69 Firebird that had the Chevy motor in it. There were far more parts available for small block Chevys either through catalogs like J.C. Whitney, or in junkyards, which were chock full of them. And, hey, if it ain’t broke…why fix it? If it gets to the point where the 350 needs to be pulled, then you can start thinking about putting a proper Pontiac motor back in. But,…”

The E model has smaller numbers, but probably is the best driving street machine out of all the early cars. 1972 model to boot! For a little background, this car was purchased brand new by an airline 747 captain living in Tiburon, CA. Years later I find myself working for that same airline. “A 1952 220A Cabriolet was my daily driver in the early 1970s. When decades later I drove past a billboard depicting a painted one on Sunset Blvd, I did a u-turn to see what it was about. It advertised the Hiro Yamagata exhibit at Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery running from Sept 13 thru Oct 23, 1994. I was at the opening, chatted with Mr Yamagata, and marveled that I was seeing more 220As in one room than I had seen in my entire life.

“This is the car that convinced me just why fulvias were rally champions. Having known the owner for a while you can rest assured that this particular example was treated with both love and care.
Having had a chance to drive it down a curvy road or two, it’s mechanically perfect and just a hoot to drive as well.
The gorgeous color doesn’t hurt either.”

“A bunch of years ago (well, decades ago), I bought a well-used but complete and drivable ’66 912 from a garage sale in Reseda, CA for the princely sum of $1000. I drove it the few blocks to my home. Going through the paperwork, I found the title, with Axl Rose’s name on it. Guns ‘n Roses’ Axl Rose.
So I washed it a bit, advertised it in The Recycler and flipped it for $2000. Felt like a genius.
