“I took my driving test in my Mom’s 75′ Grand Safari Wagon.(same body as this car). one of the longest cars ever built.. I had to parallel park it to get my license.
After going through a blinking red light, the state patrol officer said if you can get this car out of this space without turning over any of the traffic cones, he would give me my license.. My father was laughing so hard he almost fell down.
Some how I ended up with my drivers license..”

“The “Daytona 500” connection is quite plausible. Pontiac VP of PR Bob Emerick was a good friend of Bill France Sr., and Pontiac was the official pace car at Daytona for many years.
As part of that arrangement, speedway executives all drove new “loaner” Pontiacs, and many were allowed to “spec’ them any way they wanted. A loaded full-size wagon could have been part of this rotation.

“I had a new Pinto and within a year I found a deal on a proto turbocharger set-up from a well-known Detroit area tuner. It was comparatively crude to this one without an intercooler and lots of lag. But once it spooled up, it was pretty impressive. “When I was about 12 years old, my Mom’s cousin had one of these. He would load me, my brother, and two other younger cousins in the back with the jumper seats in the closed position. As he fishtailed down the road, the four of us would slide around on that metal flooring – back and forth, back and forth smashing into each other and the sides. Laughing all the way!!!!!!!! “My Dad was a district service manager for GM in the 90s and early 2000’s and as a part of that we would get a new demo car to drive every couple mos. After the dismal launch of the Aztec in 2000, GM wanted to get make the best out of a bad situation so they gave them to every service manager in the country to “get the word out”.
When I turned 16 and got my license, we got the Aztek. Bright yellow if I recall correctly, and rather than the usual 3 mos cycle, we had it for a full 7 mos.…”

My personal belief is that they are so robust and long lived because they utilize proven engines, transmissions (mostly), AWD design, and even body engineering.
They’re not mechanically high strung, cutting edge, uber fashionable vehicles.
You’re getting solid engineering and time-proven design.

The service writer put “Aspen” on the repair order, so my grandfather asked him to correct it.
