A tragic road accident involving a heavy vehicle claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy and left another person injured in Karachi on Tuesday, raising fresh concerns over road safety and the movement of heavy traffic across the city.

According to rescue officials, the accident occurred near Gulshan Hadeed Turn in the Steel Town area when a trailer collided with a motorcycle carrying two riders. The impact of the crash proved fatal for one of the riders, who died at the scene, while the second rider sustained injuries.

The deceased was identified as 17-year-old Usman, a resident of Shah Latif Town. Rescue teams responded promptly to the incident and shifted both the victim’s body and the injured person to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for legal formalities and medical treatment. Authorities have not yet released the identity or condition of the injured individual.

Police officials from Steel Town stated that the trailer driver was taken into custody immediately after the accident. The trailer involved in the collision has also been seized as part of the investigation. A case is being processed, and authorities are examining the circumstances that led to the crash.

The latest incident adds to a growing number of fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles in Karachi, where trailers, dumpers, and trucks have frequently been linked to deadly road crashes. Such incidents have repeatedly sparked public concern over traffic management, enforcement of road safety regulations, and the operation of heavy vehicles on busy roads.

Residents and road safety advocates have urged authorities to implement stricter measures, including better monitoring of heavy transport vehicles, improved driver training, and stronger enforcement of traffic laws. Many believe that regulating the movement of heavy vehicles during peak traffic hours could significantly reduce the risk of similar accidents.

The investigation into the Gulshan Hadeed accident is ongoing, and police are expected to determine whether negligence or traffic violations contributed to the fatal collision. Meanwhile, the loss of another young life has once again highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive road safety reforms to prevent further tragedies on Karachi’s roads.

The judgment stated that Ahsan Iqbal had initially sought Rs10 billion in damages for the alleged harm caused to his reputation. However, the court observed that the amount claimed was excessive in view of the evidence presented during the trial. It therefore awarded Rs2.5 million as reasonable compensation. The court further observed that Murad Saeed’s controversial statements had harmed Ahsan Iqbal’s reputation, dignity, and credibility. It said the allegations created a negative impression of the minister among the public and directly targeted his honesty, integrity, and professional standing. The judgment also noted that Murad Saeed neither appeared before the court during the proceedings nor submitted evidence to substantiate the corruption claims. The absence of supporting material, the court said, weakened his defence and left the allegations unproven. The case originated from statements made by Murad Saeed in 2019 regarding the Multan-Sukkur Motorway project. At the time, he alleged that Ahsan Iqbal had committed corruption in connection with the project. After reviewing the evidence and hearing the arguments, the court concluded that the accusations were not established and therefore amounted to defamation. The verdict marks the conclusion of the defamation proceedings, with the court reaffirming that public allegations of corruption must be backed by credible evidence.

    LAHORE: The Punjab government has ordered a province-wide crackdown against organized professional begging networks, with Lahore set to become the first “Beggar-Free City” under a coordinated enforcement campaign. The decision came during a meeting chaired by Punjab Home Secretary Dr Ahmed Javed Qazi at the Home Department. Authorities directed relevant departments to develop a joint strategy to identify professional beggars, expose the networks operating behind them, and take action against those who force vulnerable people into begging. The Punjab Safe Cities Authority and traffic police have received special assignments to help identify and dismantle the begging mafia’s network. Officials will use modern technology, surveillance tools and human intelligence to locate key hotspots and track repeat offenders. Dr Qazi stressed that authorities must take strict action against handlers who exploit children, women and elderly people for begging. He said the government had introduced legal amendments to increase penalties and fines and discourage organized begging networks. Under the amended Punjab Vagrancy Ordinance 1958, forcing someone to beg constitutes a non-bailable offence. The home secretary directed authorities to ensure strong prosecution of arrested members of the begging mafia so that cases result in effective convictions. The meeting also called for the creation of a centralized database of professional beggars who face repeated arrests. Officials will also maintain updated records of needy and destitute people who seek assistance at welfare homes. Dr Qazi instructed authorities to identify begging hotspots across Lahore and conduct targeted operations at these locations. He further emphasized the need for close coordination among all relevant departments to eliminate organized begging networks. The government also plans to strengthen welfare homes and turn them into support centers for vulnerable members of society. Officials will improve arrangements for food, healthcare and accommodation while providing education to children staying at these facilities. The welfare homes will also offer vocational training to help deserving individuals develop skills and achieve financial independence instead of relying on begging. Dr Qazi urged civil society organizations to play an active role in supporting vulnerable communities. The home secretary appealed to citizens to report professional begging networks to police at 15. He assured the public that the authorities would keep the identities of informants confidential.
