Punjab cybercrime crackdown, 28 suspects arrested

LAHORE: Authorities have arrested 28 suspects in Lahore, Faisalabad and Multan as part of a major crackdown on organised online fraud, exposing alleged schemes that relied on impersonation, fake investment opportunities and fabricated official identities to deceive citizens.

The arrests were made during a province-wide operation by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) Punjab, directed by Punjab Director Muhammad Ali Wasim, officials said. Investigators also seized 24 mobile phones and a laptop, which are now being examined for evidence that could lead to other members of the alleged network.

The investigation has revealed how fraudsters allegedly manipulated trust to convince victims to hand over large sums of money.

Millions allegedly lost in Lahore scam

In Lahore, 18 suspects were arrested in separate operations. Investigators said the suspects allegedly impersonated relatives, visa agents, government officials and personnel associated with the Punjab Safe Cities Authority.

In one case, suspects allegedly posed as both a relative and a visa agent and persuaded a victim to transfer Rs25.86 million.

The case has highlighted how scammers can combine apparently familiar identities with urgent requests to make their schemes appear legitimate.

Rs54.66m trading fraud uncovered

Three suspects were arrested in Faisalabad in connection with alleged online trading fraud and unauthorised access to a company email account.

According to investigators, a victim was shown fabricated trading records, digital-wallet balances and purported profit statements to create the impression that substantial returns were being generated.

After being persuaded to invest, the victim allegedly lost Rs54.66 million, investigators said.

The case demonstrates the growing sophistication of investment scams, where criminals allegedly use manipulated digital information to make fraudulent platforms appear genuine.

Multan arrests expose impersonation tactics

In Multan, seven suspects were arrested for allegedly posing as relatives, bank employees and individuals claiming to be based in Britain.

Officials said victims were approached with various demands, including payments supposedly required for prize money, customs clearance, taxes and visa renewals.

Such tactics typically create a sense of urgency, leaving victims with little time to verify the identity of the caller or the authenticity of the demand.

Digital evidence now under forensic examination

NCCIA investigators are examining the seized devices through forensic analysis. Financial transactions, call records and digital communications are also being reviewed to establish the full extent of the alleged operation and identify other people who may be connected to it.

The crackdown comes amid growing concern over online financial fraud in Pakistan. The NCCIA’s own statistics identify financial fraud as a major category of reported cybercrime.

The latest arrests underscore a simple but increasingly important warning: an apparently familiar voice, official-looking message or promising investment opportunity may not be what it seems.

Authorities are expected to continue the investigation as they trace the alleged network and follow the digital and financial trails left behind.

Business activity in Pakistan’s corporate sector has witnessed a significant acceleration as the SECP set a new record for the registration of new companies during July. According to official figures, 5,438 new companies were registered across the country in July marking the highest number of registrations recorded in a single month. During the same period, five international companies also established their offices in Pakistan including companies from Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates and China. According to the report, 112 newly registered companies have foreign directors on their boards indicating growing foreign investment and international business interest in Pakistan. The newly registered companies include 3,148 private limited companies while Punjab remained at the top with 2,756 new companies registered. This was followed by Islamabad with 1,053, Sindh with 864, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 450, Gilgit-Baltistan with 180 and Balochistan with 135 newly registered companies. IT sector leads new registrations A sector-wise analysis shows that Information Technology (IT) remained the leading sector with 1,008 new companies registered. Other sectors also recorded significant registrations including 845 companies in trading, 638 in services, 348 in construction, 256 in food and beverages, 207 in tourism, 181 in e-commerce, 165 in education, 162 in real estate development and 145 in corporate agriculture. According to business experts, the increasing number of new company registrations reflects growing private-sector investment, business confidence and new economic activity in the country. The rapid growth in registrations in the IT sector is also being viewed as a positive sign for the expansion of Pakistan’s digital economy.

    Karachi hospitals face fire safety gaps after PIMS…

    KARACHI: Serious shortcomings in fire safety arrangements have been reported at major government hospitals in Karachi following the deadly fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad, where newborns lost their lives. Hospital sources said several major public healthcare facilities in Karachi lack functional fire alarm systems and adequate emergency preparedness, raising concerns about the safety of thousands of patients and healthcare workers. At Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, operated by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), only 13 fire extinguishers are reportedly available across the facility. Sources said hospital staff have also not received regular fire safety training or participated in proper fire drills. The hospital reportedly does not have a fire alarm system or a designated emergency exit route. The situation is particularly concerning because hundreds of patients visit the emergency department every day, while more than 1,000 patients reportedly attend the outpatient department (OPD). Abbasi Shaheed Hospital has two generators, with one reportedly kept as a backup power source. The hospital’s Medical Superintendent said authorities were taking further steps to improve the fire safety system and address existing shortcomings. At Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), fire extinguishers are available in the wards, but hospital sources said several of them are not functional. Sources further said the last fire drill at the hospital was conducted in 2017. The hospital also reportedly lacks an installed fire alarm system. JPMC’s Joint Executive Director said a dedicated firefighting team needs to be established at the hospital. He said each ward has a fire extinguisher, while further training for staff is also required. He added that the hospital administration would write to the Sindh government seeking additional fire safety training for employees. Meanwhile, Civil Hospital Karachi has around 180 fire extinguishers distributed among its wards. However, sources said the overall fire safety arrangements at the hospital also fall short of ideal standards. The revelations have raised concerns about the preparedness of major public hospitals in Karachi to deal with fires and other emergencies. Large government hospitals handle thousands of patients, attendants and healthcare workers every day. In the event of a fire, the absence of functional alarms, clearly marked emergency exits, regular drills and trained response teams could make evacuation difficult and increase the risk to human lives. The situation has come under renewed scrutiny after the PIMS tragedy in Islamabad, prompting calls for immediate inspections of fire safety systems at hospitals across the country. Experts and hospital officials have stressed the need for regular fire drills, functioning extinguishers, alarm systems, emergency exits and trained firefighting teams.
