Capital one defends closure of Trump organization accounts

Capital One Financial has responded to a lawsuit filed over its decision to close bank accounts linked to the Trump Organization, arguing that the move was based on internal anti-money laundering reviews rather than political or ideological motivations. The bank, in a legal filing submitted on Friday, stated that it closed the accounts following a detailed assessment conducted by its anti-money laundering (AML) specialists. The company argued that the decision was made after months of analysis and was consistent with its internal policies as well as regulatory requirements. The filing represents the first time a major bank has publicly connected concerns related to money laundering risks with its decision to end a banking relationship involving the Trump family business. However, Capital One clarified that it has never accused the Trump Organization of committing illegal money laundering activities. Instead, the bank said that the account closures were the result of routine compliance procedures. Capital One argued that documents presented in the case, along with the plaintiffs’ own claims, demonstrate that the decision was related to AML concerns rather than any attempt to discriminate against the company because of political beliefs. The dispute began after Capital One informed the Trump Organization in March 2021 that it planned to close more than 300 accounts associated with businesses connected to former U.S. President Donald Trump. The Trump Organization and Eric Trump, Trump’s son, later filed a lawsuit in March 2025 in a Florida federal court, claiming that the bank had unfairly “debanked” them because of political pressure and what they described as the company’s “woke” policies. The lawsuit alleged that Capital One’s decision was influenced by the political environment following the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. The plaintiffs argued that the bank wanted to distance itself from Trump and his supporters during a period of intense public and political scrutiny. A federal court in Miami has already dismissed two versions of the complaint but allowed the plaintiffs opportunities to revise and submit updated claims. Capital One argued in its latest filing that the amended complaint continues to contain the same weaknesses as earlier versions and fails to establish evidence of unlawful discrimination. The bank accused the Trump Organization of presenting selective information and relying on statements taken out of context. Capital One maintained that the allegations of political motivation were unsupported and ignored the broader circumstances behind the account closures. According to the bank’s filing, certain transaction patterns identified during its review matched types of activities that federal banking authorities commonly recognize as requiring additional examination. Capital One said its AML team followed established procedures before reaching the decision to terminate the accounts. The legal battle comes during a broader political debate in the United States over the issue of “debanking,” with some conservatives accusing financial institutions of unfairly targeting individuals and organizations because of their political views. During his second presidential term, Trump’s administration has criticized such practices and taken steps aimed at preventing what it describes as discriminatory banking decisions. The controversy has also involved other major financial institutions. Trump previously filed a lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase, making similar allegations regarding political discrimination. During his first term in office, Trump also took legal action against Capital One and Deutsche Bank in an effort to prevent the release of his financial records to Congress. The case continues to highlight the growing tension between banking compliance practices, political concerns, and the debate over whether financial institutions should have broader restrictions on ending relationships with controversial clients.

Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott welcome baby girl together

Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott have entered an exciting new chapter as parents, welcoming their first child together. The couple has reportedly welcomed a baby girl, marking a major milestone in their relationship. The happy news came to light after Plaza was spotted in New York City on Sunday, August 9, carrying her newborn in a baby sling. The actress was seen in a relaxed casual look as she stepped out wearing a black tank top, jeans and her hair pulled into a high ponytail. She appeared to be carrying the newborn after attending Christopher Abbott’s final performance in the Broadway production Death of a Salesman. According to reports, Plaza gave birth to the couple’s daughter during the final week of July 2026. The arrival comes just months after the couple publicly confirmed that they were expecting their first child. Plaza’s pregnancy was officially revealed in April, when her representative confirmed the news. At the time, an insider described the pregnancy as a “beautiful surprise” following an emotional year for the actress and said that Plaza and Abbott felt extremely blessed about starting a family together. The couple later made their red carpet debut as an expecting pair at the 2026 Tony Awards on June 7. The event, held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, gave fans their first major public glimpse of Plaza’s growing baby bump. Although Plaza and Abbott have kept much of their relationship away from the spotlight, their romance reportedly began after years of professional connections. The two previously worked together on the 2020 film Black Bear and later reunited for the 2023 Broadway revival of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea. Their relationship reportedly became public in 2025, with the pair gradually stepping out together before announcing their pregnancy the following year. For Plaza, the birth of her daughter represents an important new beginning after a difficult period in her personal life. Before her relationship with Abbott, the Parks and Recreation star was married to filmmaker Jeff Baena. The former couple separated in 2024 after several years together. Baena died in 2025. Since then, Plaza has largely maintained a private approach to her personal life while continuing to focus on her acting career. Abbott, meanwhile, has remained busy with his professional commitments, including his Broadway role in Death of a Salesman. His final performance in the production appears to have coincided with a particularly memorable moment for the couple, as Plaza was photographed carrying their newborn shortly afterward. The arrival of their baby girl adds another special milestone to Plaza and Abbott’s evolving relationship. While neither star has publicly shared extensive details about their daughter, fans are celebrating the couple’s reported new journey into parenthood.

South Korea backs Trump’s push to revive North Korea talks

SEOUL: South Korea has welcomed US President Donald Trump’s efforts to restart dialogue with North Korea but wants any renewed negotiations to produce meaningful progress on Pyongyang’s nuclear programme. South Korean National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac said on Friday that Seoul supports Washington’s diplomatic outreach to North Korea, provided that it does not weaken the country’s security preparedness or leave South Korea out of the process. Wi said any renewed US-North Korea dialogue should focus on achieving tangible progress towards addressing North Korea’s nuclear weapons capabilities while also supporting efforts to establish lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula. He stressed that close coordination between Seoul and Washington would be essential if negotiations with Pyongyang resume. “We need to coordinate with the United States to ensure that any resumption of US-North Korea dialogue leads to substantive progress on the North Korean nuclear issue,” Wi said. The national security adviser also referred to Trump’s recent decision to significantly reduce major joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea. He said the move appeared to indicate Washington’s willingness to create conditions for renewed engagement with North Korea. However, Seoul remains concerned about maintaining a credible defence posture. Wi said South Korea must ensure that diplomatic efforts do not undermine military readiness. He also warned that Seoul should not be sidelined if Washington succeeds in reopening talks with Pyongyang. Trump has been seeking another meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The two leaders held three summits during 2018 and 2019, but their negotiations failed to produce a lasting agreement on denuclearisation. Trump has previously criticised the scale of joint US-South Korean military exercises, arguing that some drills could send the wrong message to North Korea. His administration has continued to explore ways to bring Pyongyang back to negotiations. Meanwhile, South Korea, the United States and Japan are scheduled to hold joint military exercises from September 9 to 11. The drills are intended to test the three countries’ readiness to respond to potential missile and nuclear threats from North Korea. Wi also said Seoul was seeking closer cooperation with Washington on several issues that have occasionally created friction between the two allies. These areas include South Korean investment in the United States under a bilateral trade agreement, security cooperation, intelligence sharing and the planned transfer of wartime operational control. The treatment of US-listed South Korean e-commerce company Coupang was also mentioned among the issues requiring greater coordination.

The understanding was reached during a meeting between Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain and Belarusian Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Yakovchits Aleksander. The discussions focused on expanding bilateral trade, improving business-to-business connectivity and creating new opportunities for cooperation in agriculture and food-related sectors. Under the proposed initiative, businesses and relevant organisations from Pakistan and Belarus will be encouraged to participate in online B2B meetings. The sessions are expected to connect exporters, importers and other industry stakeholders and help them explore potential commercial partnerships. The two countries identified a number of products with potential for increased bilateral trade, including seafood, citrus fruits, mangoes, fruit puree, potatoes, seeds and dairy products. Greater business connectivity in these areas could help companies explore new markets and diversify trade opportunities. Focus on Agricultural Exhibitions Pakistan and Belarus also agreed to encourage greater participation by businesses and agricultural stakeholders in food exhibitions, trade fairs and other industry events held in both countries. Such events will provide companies with opportunities to showcase their products, establish business contacts, develop partnerships and explore investment opportunities. The initiative is also expected to help strengthen direct commercial links between businesses operating in the agricultural and food sectors. The two sides further agreed to facilitate reciprocal visits by agricultural trade and business delegations. These exchanges are aimed at encouraging investment, sharing technical expertise and identifying areas where companies and institutions from both countries can work together. Cooperation in Fish Farming The meeting also discussed prospects for cooperation in fisheries, particularly fish farming and aquaculture. Both sides agreed to promote the exchange of knowledge, technology and best practices in the sector. Cooperation in this area could support the adoption of modern aquaculture techniques while providing opportunities for technical collaboration and investment. The initiative is expected to contribute to the development of more efficient fish-farming practices and strengthen cooperation between relevant institutions and businesses in Pakistan and Belarus. Proposal for Agricultural Machinery Testing Centre During the meeting, Rana Tanveer Hussain proposed the establishment of a universal agricultural machinery testing facility or centre at the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC), with financial and technical assistance from Belarus. The proposed centre would provide a platform for testing agricultural machinery and assessing its suitability for use in Pakistan’s farming sector. The Belarusian side took note of the proposal and agreed to examine the initiative further. As part of the process, the two sides agreed to conduct a detailed assessment of the proposed facility. This will include identifying the machinery and equipment required for the centre and evaluating locations suggested by Pakistan for establishing machinery testing stations. Pakistan and Belarus also agreed to facilitate exchange visits by highly qualified technical experts by the end of 2026. The visits are expected to help specialists assess technical requirements, exchange expertise and explore practical mechanisms for implementing the proposed cooperation. Pakistan Seeks Practical Outcomes Rana Tanveer Hussain emphasised the need to transform bilateral cooperation into practical commercial, technological and institutional results. He said Pakistan was interested in expanding its engagement with Belarus in emerging areas of agriculture and food security, while creating greater opportunities for farmers, businesses, investors and technical experts. The minister highlighted the importance of stronger institutional and private-sector linkages to ensure that agreements between the two countries translate into tangible economic benefits. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the growing cooperation between Pakistan and Belarus and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding collaboration in agriculture, food trade, fisheries, technology and agricultural machinery.
