Hollywood source speaks out after Meghan Markle an…

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are making headlines again after announcing plans to return to the UK with their two children. The unexpected move comes six years after the couple stepped away from royal duties and relocated to California.

The Sussexes are expected to return to Britain later this month and spend an extended period near London. However, they will remain private citizens rather than working members of the Royal Family. Their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, are also expected to attend school in the UK. (Reuters)

The announcement has reportedly surprised people on both sides of the Atlantic. A royal source told Entertainment Tonight that members of the Royal Family were “blindsided” by the decision, particularly because the move was not discussed during Harry and Meghan’s recent private meeting with King Charles. (ELLE)

But the biggest reaction may be coming from Hollywood.

Harry and Meghan moved to California in 2020 with hopes of building a new life and creating a successful entertainment empire. They signed major deals, including partnerships with Netflix and Spotify, while launching Archewell Productions and developing projects for global audiences.

However, their Hollywood journey has reportedly been more complicated than expected. Recent reports have described strained industry relationships, disappointing projects and declining opportunities. Variety previously reported that the couple’s relationship with Netflix had become increasingly difficult, while other entertainment reports have questioned their long-term position in Hollywood. (Variety)

One recent Hollywood-focused report went even further, claiming that the couple had “worn out” their welcome in the entertainment industry. It pointed to the end of their Spotify partnership and challenges surrounding their media projects as signs that their American dream had not developed as originally expected. These claims come from unnamed industry sources and should therefore be treated as allegations rather than established facts. (Page Six)

Their return to Britain has consequently sparked speculation about whether the Sussexes are turning the page on their Hollywood chapter.

Still, the move does not necessarily mean they are abandoning America completely. Reports indicate that Harry and Meghan plan to retain their California home while establishing a base in the UK. Meghan is also expected to continue working on her lifestyle brand and other projects. (Business Insider)

The couple’s relationship with the Royal Family also remains complicated. Their recent meeting with King Charles appears to have created some hope for improved family ties, but tensions with Prince William remain particularly strong. (The Guardian)

For now, Harry and Meghan’s return marks a dramatic new chapter. After leaving Britain to build an independent life in Hollywood, they are once again heading home—this time as a family of four, with their future firmly under the spotlight.

Court summons former Lebanon Central Bank governor

Lebanese judicial authorities have issued a court summons for former Central Bank governor Riad Salameh after he failed to appear at a scheduled hearing in a high-profile financial corruption case, marking another major development in one of the country’s most closely watched legal investigations. According to a judicial source, prosecutors ordered security forces to locate Salameh at his residence and escort him to Beirut’s Palace of Justice after he did not attend Thursday’s hearing. The case stems from a complaint filed by current Central Bank Governor Karim Soueid, who has accused his predecessor of embezzlement of institutional funds, illicit enrichment and money laundering. Salameh, 76, led Lebanon’s central bank from 1993 until July 2023, overseeing the country’s monetary policy for three decades. Once regarded as one of the Middle East’s most influential financial figures, he later became a central figure in the controversy surrounding Lebanon’s devastating financial collapse. The Central Bank has alleged that it was the victim of an embezzlement scheme involving several hundred million euros, claiming the funds were misappropriated by Salameh with assistance from individuals close to him. However, the former governor has repeatedly denied all allegations, insisting he has committed no wrongdoing. The first hearing in the case took place in June at Salameh’s home because of his reported health condition, where he was questioned by an investigating judge. On Thursday, former banking executive Samir Hanna appeared before the court in connection with the same investigation, while Salameh remained absent. The former governor has faced growing legal pressure both inside Lebanon and abroad. He was arrested in September 2024 over allegations that he embezzled $44 million from the institution he once headed. After spending a year in detention, he was released on bail exceeding $14 million, one of the largest ever imposed in Lebanon, but remains banned from leaving the country. International investigations have also intensified. French authorities issued an international arrest warrant for Salameh in 2023, while prosecutors in Paris continue examining allegations linked to cross-border financial transactions. In May this year, the Swiss subsidiary of British banking giant HSBC was formally indicted as investigators examined claims that it may have facilitated financial activities connected to the former governor. The latest court summons underscores Lebanon’s efforts to pursue accountability for the country’s prolonged financial crisis. As investigations continue at home and overseas, the case against Salameh remains one of the most significant legal battles tied to Lebanon’s economic collapse, with many citizens viewing it as a crucial test of the country’s commitment to transparency and judicial reform.

Punjab launches ‘Naya Aaghaz’ programme for pr…

LAHORE: In a major step towards prison reform and prisoner rehabilitation, the Punjab government has launched the “Naya Aaghaz” (New Beginning) Programme, an initiative designed to provide interest-free loans to eligible inmates after their release, enabling them to start small businesses and successfully reintegrate into society. The programme, introduced under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s prison reform agenda, is being implemented through a partnership between the Punjab Home Department and Akhuwat Islamic Microfinance. The agreement aims to support former prisoners by helping them achieve financial independence using vocational skills acquired during their imprisonment. Under the initiative, eligible released prisoners will be able to obtain interest-free loans of up to Rs200,000 to either establish a new business or expand an existing one. The loans will be repaid in equal monthly instalments over 36 months, while recovered funds will be recycled to support future beneficiaries. An initial revolving fund of Rs5 million has been allocated by Akhuwat Islamic Microfinance to launch the programme. All administrative and operational costs will be borne by Akhuwat, ensuring that neither the Punjab Home Department nor the Punjab Prisons Department faces any financial burden. The Punjab Prisons Department will identify inmates expected to be released within the next three months and assess their eligibility based on their conduct in prison and the vocational training they have successfully completed. Final verification of loan applications will be carried out independently by Akhuwat in accordance with its lending policies. Officials said Punjab’s prisons currently offer certified vocational training programmes across all correctional facilities, with inmates receiving technical education in 23 different trades. More than 28,000 prisoners have already earned vocational certificates through TEVTA and PVTC training centres, while approximately 6,500 inmates are presently undergoing skills training. Additionally, 74 psychologists are working in Punjab prisons to encourage rehabilitation through counselling and positive engagement. The agreement was signed by DIG Prisons Ahmed Naveed Gondal and Akhuwat CEO Dr Kamran Shams in the presence of Chairman of the Chief Minister’s Task Force on Prisons Rana Manan Khan, Punjab Home Secretary Dr Ahmed Javed Qazi, Akhuwat Foundation Chairman Dr Amjad Saqib, Inspector General Prisons Mian Salik Jalal, senior Home Department officials and other representatives. Speaking at the ceremony, Rana Manan Khan said the programme would enable released prisoners to become financially self-reliant and lead respectable lives after completing their sentences. He described prison reforms as one of the Punjab government’s highest priorities and said the administration was committed to transforming prisons into genuine rehabilitation centres. Punjab Home Secretary Dr Ahmed Javed Qazi said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to reducing poverty, promoting social reintegration and ensuring that former prisoners return to society as productive and self-sufficient citizens. He added that education, vocational training and discipline were central to the government’s vision of modern prison reforms. Akhuwat Foundation Chairman Dr Amjad Saqib said the programme is entirely based on the principle of Qarz-e-Hasna (benevolent, interest-free loans) and will provide released inmates with a dignified opportunity to rebuild their lives. He noted that Akhuwat has so far disbursed over Rs500 billion in interest-free loans to around 4.5 million families across Pakistan. Officials also clarified that individuals listed under the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) or designated under United Nations Security Council sanctions will not qualify for the scheme. They further stated that the Punjab government and the Prisons Department will not be responsible for loan defaults, business losses or repayment issues, as all lending decisions and monitoring will remain the responsibility of Akhuwat Islamic Microfinance.

UEFA welcomes FIFA investment plan withdrawal

UEFA has welcomed FIFA’s decision to abandon its controversial private investment proposal, calling the move “a victory for the whole game” while declaring that it has lost confidence in FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s leadership. The governing body for European football made the remarks after FIFA officially scrapped plans to sell stakes in its competitions following widespread opposition from football associations around the world. On August 1, FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed that the proposal to bring private investors into FIFA tournaments had been withdrawn after facing intense backlash and threats of a boycott. The plan had sparked strong criticism from UEFA, which argued that football’s global competitions should not be treated as commercial assets. Before the proposal was abandoned, UEFA had firmly opposed the idea, stating: “Football is not FIFA’s to sell.” Following FIFA’s decision to withdraw the proposal, UEFA issued another strongly worded statement welcoming the outcome while criticising Infantino’s leadership. The statement read: “The current FIFA leadership has not only lost UEFA’s confidence but also that of many other members of the football family.” UEFA also reminded members of the promises Infantino made when he first sought election as FIFA president in 2016. Quoting his campaign pledge, the organisation said: “When Gianni Infantino asked for the trust and the votes of FIFA’s member associations to elect him as their president in 2016, he said: ‘Of course we have to be transparent.’” The European governing body accused Infantino of failing to live up to that commitment, claiming he had handled FIFA’s finances without sufficient transparency and had treated the organisation’s money as though it belonged to him personally. The controversy began on July 29, when Infantino reportedly offered each of FIFA’s 211 member associations$40 million in exchange for supporting a proposal that would allow private investment in FIFA competitions, including the men’s and women’s World Cups. UEFA responded swiftly by announcing it would boycott future World Cups if the proposal moved forward. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) also declared that it “stands in solidarity” with UEFA and Concacaf, adding further pressure on FIFA to reconsider the plan. The criticism did not stop there. FIFA chief operating officer Kevin Lamour reportedly admitted that the organisation’s own administration had been “deceived” about the investment project. Meanwhile, FIFA senior adviser on global strategy and governance Carlos Cordeiro resigned over the proposal, describing it as: “A bad deal for football” He also warned that it would: “Mortgage football’s future.” The episode has created fresh uncertainty around Infantino’s leadership ahead of FIFA’s next presidential election. Infantino, who was first elected FIFA president in 2016 after defeating AFC president Sheikh Salman al-Khalifa by 115 votes to 88, is expected to seek another term. FIFA’s next president will be confirmed at the organisation’s 77th Congress in Morocco next March, with candidates required to submit their nominations by November 18.
