Two arrested in Rs220m Karachi heist

Police have arrested two suspects in connection with a Rs220 million theft in Karachi, apprehending them from Jhang after tracing their alleged involvement in a series of criminal activities across Punjab and Sindh.

According to the spokesperson for the DIG Operations, police arrested suspect Mehtab along with his relative, Abdul Rehman, during an operation in Jhang.

The spokesperson said Mehtab has 18 previous cases of theft and burglary registered against him. Investigators have also linked him to a major robbery in Karachi’s Saddar area in April, in which valuables worth around Rs220 million were reportedly stolen.

Police said the two suspects had allegedly carried out thefts in several other cities, including Jhang, Faisalabad and Rahim Yar Khan.

During the arrest operation, officers recovered a 9mm pistol and ammunition from Abdul Rehman, according to police.

Authorities also recovered stolen property from the suspects that allegedly belonged to a theft case registered at Islamabad’s Ramna Police Station.

Police are continuing their investigation to determine the suspects’ involvement in other criminal cases and to trace any additional stolen property.

IHC asked to frame rules for social media use by c…

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court has been petitioned to direct the federal government to introduce legislation and a comprehensive regulatory framework governing social media access by children below the age of 16. The petition, filed by advocates Muhammad Jalal Haider and Yahya Farid Khawaja, calls for a reliable age-verification system to prevent minors from creating or operating social media accounts without appropriate safeguards. The petitioners argue that children face growing risks online, including cyberbullying, harassment, exposure to inappropriate material and other forms of digital harm. They have urged the government to establish clear policies covering children’s digital rights, privacy and physical and psychological safety. They have also sought specific legal responsibilities for social media companies, including stronger safeguards for minors and the creation of an institutional mechanism dedicated to protecting children in the digital environment. The petition refers to measures adopted or proposed in countries including Australia, France, Britain, New Zealand and Spain, where authorities have considered age limits, parental consent and age-verification requirements for children’s social media use. Citing the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and General Comment No. 25, the petitioners maintain that protecting children’s best interests is a legal responsibility of the state rather than merely a policy choice. They argue that the absence of an effective age-verification mechanism leaves minors exposed to online dangers and makes it difficult to enforce protections designed specifically for children. The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Law and Justice, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority and Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority have been named as respondents. Punjab Assembly Resolution The development follows a resolution submitted to the Punjab Assembly last month calling for restrictions on social media accounts operated by children under 16 without parental consent. The resolution, moved by Punjab lawmaker Sarah Ahmad, urged the provincial government to recommend federal legislation aimed at regulating minors’ access to social media and strengthening online protection. It highlighted concerns over cyberbullying, online exploitation, inappropriate content, digital addiction and psychological distress among children, stressing that safeguarding their physical, mental and moral development is a responsibility of the state. The resolution proposed prohibiting children below 16 from creating or maintaining social media accounts without verified parental or legal guardian consent. It also called on the PTA to develop and enforce effective age-verification mechanisms across platforms operating in Pakistan. It further recommended holding social media companies accountable for child-safety standards, including the timely removal of harmful content and measures to provide a safer online environment for minors.

How did the PIMS NICU tragedy unfold?

An initial investigation by the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has shed new light on the fire that killed 15 newborn babies at the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). According to the preliminary report prepared by the PIMS administration, a nebulizer attached to an incubator, used to deliver or monitor oxygen for a newborn, reportedly burst inside the NICU. The incident caused the oxygen to catch fire, triggering a blaze in the unit. The report says the fire initially remained limited but spread rapidly. Thick smoke entered the babies’ breathing system through the oxygen pipeline, while the fire and heat also affected the infants. The preliminary findings indicate that the newborns died from a combination of oxygen supply failure, smoke inhalation and burn injuries. Earlier, rescue officials and hospital authorities had attributed the fire to an air-conditioner compressor explosion in the gynecology ward. They also said the presence of oxygen cylinders contributed to the rapid spread of the flames. One newborn reportedly survived the incident. The tragedy has raised serious questions about safety arrangements and emergency response at the hospital. The bodies of the deceased newborns have been handed over to their families. Parents and eyewitnesses alleged that hospital staff were not present in the nursery when the fire broke out and claimed that the doors remained closed, making it difficult to evacuate the babies. They also questioned the response time of rescue teams. PIMS Executive Director, however, rejected claims that staff had abandoned the NICU. He said two doctors, four nurses and other staff members were present in the intensive care unit at the time of the incident. He also maintained that the hospital had an adequate fire safety system. The Capital Development Authority (CDA) said its rescue teams reached the hospital soon after receiving the emergency call. According to the authority, firefighters brought the blaze under control and immediately shifted the affected newborns to the intensive care unit for treatment. The district administration has formed an eight-member inquiry committee to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess whether safety protocols were properly followed. The committee has been directed to submit its findings within 24 hours. The conflicting accounts about the source of the fire have increased pressure for a detailed and impartial investigation. The final inquiry is expected to establish how the fire started, why it spread so quickly, whether the oxygen system played a role and whether the hospital staff and emergency services responded according to established safety procedures.

How Kanye West celebrated after settling ex-assist…

Kanye West appears to have put a lengthy legal battle behind him after reaching a settlement with his former assistant, Lauren Pisciotta. Just days after the civil lawsuit was resolved, the rapper was reportedly seen enjoying a night out in Ibiza, signaling a return to public life following months of courtroom headlines.  According to court filings, West and Pisciotta reached an unconditional settlement in the lawsuit that began in 2024. The terms of the agreement remain confidential, and Pisciotta is expected to formally dismiss the case within 45 days. West has consistently denied the allegations made against him throughout the legal proceedings, and the settlement does not include any admission of wrongdoing by either party.  Soon after news of the settlement became public, TMZ reported that West was spotted celebrating in Ibiza, Spain. The rapper was seen visiting one of the island’s popular nightlife venues, appearing relaxed as he spent time with friends. The outing marked one of his first public appearances since the legal dispute came to an end.  Lauren Pisciotta, who worked as West’s personal assistant and later as his chief of staff, first filed her lawsuit in June 2024. She accused the rapper of sexual harassment, wrongful termination and breach of contract. The complaint was later amended to include additional allegations, including sexual assault and sexual battery. West denied the accusations, with his representatives previously describing the claims as false and unfounded. No criminal charges were filed in connection with the civil case.  Although the settlement closes one chapter, West continues to attract attention both for his music career and his public appearances. The artist, who legally changed his name to Ye in 2021, has remained a frequent subject of headlines over the past several years due to legal disputes and personal controversies.  Neither West nor Pisciotta has publicly commented on the specific terms of the settlement. Legal experts note that confidential settlements are common in civil litigation and often allow both parties to avoid a lengthy trial. Because the agreement remains private, it is unclear whether any financial compensation was involved.  For now, West appears focused on moving forward. His appearance in Ibiza quickly drew media attention, with many viewing the outing as a sign that he is leaving the legal battle behind. While the settlement brings an end to one of his most closely watched civil cases, the rapper remains one of the entertainment industry’s most talked-about and closely followed figures.

Nawaz Sharif fires warning: Politics must not beco…

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has called for political tolerance, saying political rivalry is a normal part of democratic politics but differences should never turn into personal or political enmity. Addressing a PML-N meeting in Murree on Saturday, Nawaz Sharif said he was surprised by the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) objections regarding the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections. He noted that the PPP had previously been in power in AJK and said the political situation that emerged during the elections was a matter of concern for all political stakeholders. Nawaz said the situation had developed because previous governments had failed to properly fulfil their responsibilities. He stressed that political parties should respect democratic differences and avoid creating an atmosphere of hostility. The PML-N president said his party had always treated its political opponents with respect. He urged all political forces to demonstrate patience and tolerance and keep political disagreements within the limits of democratic debate. Nawaz Sharif said the PML-N had secured a simple majority after the first two phases of the AJK elections. The party has won 24 seats, while the PPP has secured 10 seats in the first two phases. The third phase of the election process is yet to be completed, with final results expected after the remaining polling process. Nawaz expressed confidence that the PML-N would form the government in AJK. He said the party would work to fulfil the commitments made to voters during the election campaign. He congratulated PML-N leaders and workers on their electoral performance and appreciated their efforts during the election campaign. Nawaz Sharif called for maximum financial resources to be provided to Azad Kashmir. He said improving the lives of the people and accelerating development should remain the government’s top priority. He claimed that the people of AJK were looking towards Punjab for development and better public services. Nawaz said development work had been initiated during Shehbaz Sharif’s tenure in Punjab and later expanded under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. He pledged that the PML-N would seek to replicate its development model in AJK. “The way we transformed Punjab, we will transform Azad Kashmir as well,” Nawaz said, while stressing that failing to deliver on promises made to voters could result in public disappointment. The PML-N president also praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his team for their efforts to address Pakistan’s economic and administrative challenges. He said the government inherited an extremely difficult situation but was now working to improve the country’s overall position. According to Nawaz, economic conditions were gradually improving and efforts were underway to put Pakistan on a stronger and more sustainable footing. He said the government was also seeking to reduce Pakistan’s dependence on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and move the country towards greater economic self-reliance.
