BANGKOK, Thailand — Thai citizens in multiple provinces have adopted an unconventional approach to securing their place in line at Krung Thai Bank branches, placing their footwear in queues stretching from bank entrances as they wait to register for the government’s ‘Thai Chuay Thai Plus’ welfare scheme, according to social media reports and local media accounts.

The scenes, which quickly gained attention on social media platforms, showed applicants standing or walking barefoot outside bank branches after using their shoes to mark their positions in lines that formed well before opening hours. The practice was reported in several provinces including Nakhon Ratchasima and Kamphaeng Phet, where large crowds gathered to seek assistance with registration difficulties linked to the ‘Pao Tang’ mobile application.

The government has acknowledged that many applicants have encountered technical challenges when attempting to register for the scheme, including difficulties updating phone numbers, recovering forgotten passwords, or completing identity verification procedures. These issues have required in-person assistance at Krung Thai Bank branches, contributing to the high demand for early queue positions.

Registration for the ‘Thai Chuay Thai Plus’ scheme opened recently and will continue through May 29. Under the co-payment arrangement, the government will subsidize 60% of expenditures made by each eligible recipient on goods and services purchased from participating retailers. Approximately 30 million Thai citizens aged 18 and over qualify for the financial support, which will be distributed at a rate of 1,000 baht per month for four months beginning June 1. Daily spending under the scheme is capped at 200 baht.

The initiative forms part of broader government efforts to provide targeted economic support to households while stimulating domestic consumption through designated retail channels. Officials have emphasized that the program is designed to assist citizens with essential purchases while encouraging participation in the formal economy.

Banking authorities have indicated that Krung Thai Bank branches are implementing measures to manage crowd volumes and ensure orderly processing of registration requests. Staff have been deployed to assist applicants with technical issues, and extended service hours have been introduced at selected locations to accommodate demand.

For citizens experiencing difficulties with the registration process, government agencies have provided guidance through official websites, call centers, and social media channels. Applicants are encouraged to prepare required documentation in advance, including national identification cards and registered mobile phone numbers, to facilitate efficient processing.

The use of personal items to reserve queue positions reflects a practical adaptation to high-demand public services in Thailand, where similar practices have occasionally been observed during periods of elevated demand for government programs, document processing, or limited-availability services. Authorities have generally tolerated such arrangements provided they do not disrupt public order or exclude vulnerable individuals from accessing services.

    Three injured as rival MQM-P groups clash at party…

    KARACHI: Internal differences within Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) intensified on Sunday after supporters of two rival factions allegedly clashed outside the party’s Bahadurabad headquarters in Karachi, leaving at least three people injured. According to reports, tensions between supporters of the groups associated with MQM-P Chairman Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui and senior leader Mustafa Kamal escalated following a party meeting. The confrontation turned violent as workers allegedly exchanged slogans, engaged in physical fighting, and pelted stones at each other. Witnesses also reported aerial firing near the Bahadurabad headquarters during the unrest, creating panic in the area. Three people sustained injuries during the clashes. Senior MQM-P leader Dr Farooq Sattar said the dispute erupted after a meeting of party leaders at the Bahadurabad office. Speaking to the media, he alleged that supporters of one faction assaulted MPA Ejaz-ul-Haq and party leader Zakir. He further claimed that party leaders Mangla Sharma and Sabeen Ghori were also mistreated during the incident. MQM-P leader Amin Ul Haque alleged that one party worker was injured in the firing, while several others suffered injuries due to stone-pelting. He also claimed that extensive vandalism took place inside the party office and that the office’s DVR recording system was taken away. Amin Ul Haque said the matter had reached a point where it could no longer be ignored and called the incident deeply concerning for the party. Meanwhile, Dr Farooq Sattar later arrived at the Bahadurabad headquarters following the clashes as senior party leaders attempted to assess the situation and address the growing internal crisis.

    ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has fixed September 16 for hearing a contempt petition filed by Uzma Khanum, sister of PTI founder and former prime minister Imran Khan, over the alleged non-implementation of the court’s order regarding his medical treatment. The petition was submitted after the government took Imran Khan to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) instead of shifting him to Shifa International Hospital, as directed by the Supreme Court in its August 18 order. The court had also directed arrangements for regular meetings between Imran Khan and his family. PTI had challenged the government’s decision and filed a contempt petition through Uzma Khanum. The petition was returned after the Supreme Court registrar raised certain objections. The party later resubmitted it after addressing the objections. Speaking outside the Supreme Court, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan said the party wanted the matter to be heard at the earliest. He said the PTI founder’s health remained the party’s primary concern. Gohar urged the authorities to facilitate meetings between Imran Khan and his family members. He maintained that the Supreme Court’s August 18 order had not been implemented in its original form. Uzma Khanum also submitted an application seeking an early hearing. She expressed concern over what she described as a deterioration in Imran Khan’s health and argued that further delay could have serious consequences. The application alleged that the government had failed to follow the Supreme Court’s directions. It maintained that if authorities required clarification about the order, they should have approached the court instead of taking a different course of action. The government, meanwhile, has filed a review petition challenging the August 18 order. It has described the directive as discriminatory and sought its reconsideration. Imran Khan was taken to PIMS on August 21 for a medical examination and was later returned to Adiala Jail after doctors declared him medically fit. The government has maintained that security concerns prompted the decision to use PIMS instead of Shifa International Hospital. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the security situation involving PTI workers affected the planned transfer. The Supreme Court had also declined an immediate hearing of petitions seeking contempt proceedings and review of its August 18 order. The government’s review petition is therefore expected to be heard according to the court’s schedule. Gohar said PTI wanted Imran Khan’s sister, Dr Uzma, and his personal physician, Dr Faisal Sultan, to be included in the medical board. He also called for the medical tests recommended by Imran Khan’s doctors to be conducted. The PTI chairman said the party was currently focusing on Imran Khan’s health rather than political matters. He described the issue as a humanitarian concern and urged the authorities to implement the Supreme Court’s directions. Gohar also questioned the detention of Imran Khan’s physician, Dr Faisal Sultan, who was taken to Shifa International Hospital. He asked why the doctor was detained for several hours while Imran Khan was not transferred to the same facility. He reiterated that a Supreme Court order should be followed unless the court itself modifies, reviews or suspends it. Gohar said PTI also recognised the importance of security arrangements and did not want any violation of security protocols. However, he claimed the party had not been informed in advance that security concerns would prevent Imran Khan’s transfer to Shifa International Hospital.

In France, where two firefighters died Tuesday after their truck became engulfed in flames in the southwestern Gironde region, authorities urged residents in areas affected by the heat to avoid using barbecues, stressing that nine out of ten wildfires start as a result of human activity, whether accidental or not. Meanwhile, in the Western Balkans, the nature of the threat has shifted from heat to hailstorms, with several people injured in North Macedonia and eastern Kosovo. Scientists say human driven climate change continues to intensify heatwaves, droughts and wildfires, while also creating conditions that can trigger sudden and destructive storms. Real time data from a climate monitoring tool showed the average high temperature across Western Europe is forecast to reach 26.6 degrees Celsius, about 3 degrees above the historical norm for July 22 based on the 1961 to 1990 reference period. Spain’s most severe wildfire so far this year has burned an estimated 32,000 hectares in the Guadalajara region. The fire began to stabilize Tuesday after forcing evacuations across 34 municipalities and confinement orders in 14 others. Castilla La Mancha’s regional fire service, INFOCAM, said residents of five villages have been allowed to return home, though other restrictions remain in place. Visiting the affected region Wednesday, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said Spain has already experienced 22 major wildfires this year. He said the country has already surpassed 100,000 hectares burned before even reaching the most critical period of the wildfire season, noting that figure matches Spain’s annual average over the past decade. He added that more action is needed to prevent future fires. Spain’s national weather agency, AEMET, said wildfire danger remains very high or extreme across most of mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands and is expected to climb further in the coming days. The agency urged extreme caution as the ongoing heatwave combines with dry thunderstorms and Saharan dust blowing into the region. While temperatures are expected to ease slightly in some areas Thursday, forecasters expect a dry westerly wind to drive a fresh surge of heat into Mediterranean regions, where highs of 42 to 44 degrees Celsius could be recorded in some locations. The back to back heatwaves and wildfires this summer add to a growing pattern of extreme weather events across southern Europe, with officials in both Spain and France continuing to stress prevention measures as the region moves deeper into what is traditionally its most dangerous period for wildfire activity.

    Salman Raja demands Imran’s medical access

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Salman Akram Raja has called for meetings between the party’s founder, Imran Khan, and his sisters and medical team. Speaking to the media in Islamabad, Raja said PTI representatives had met the Registrar of the Supreme Court. During the meeting, they requested that the cases involving the party founder be taken up for hearing without further delay. The PTI leader also demanded that Imran Khan be allowed to meet his sisters. He said access to his doctors should also be restored so that his health can be properly monitored. Raja said the party had been assured that the pending cases would be scheduled for hearing next week. He added that the relevant cause list would also be issued. He expressed concern over the long gap between Imran Khan and his doctors. According to Raja, the PTI founder has not been able to meet his medical team for around one and a half years. Raja questioned the reason for preventing regular medical consultations. He said the issue was particularly important because of concerns about Imran Khan’s health. The PTI leader also discussed the former prime minister’s political activities. He said Imran Khan had the right to express his political views. However, Raja said the party was prepared to ensure that political discussions did not take place if they could affect Imran Khan’s health. He said the priority at present was his medical well-being and access to proper healthcare. Raja said the matter would be taken before the court next week. He indicated that the party would seek judicial intervention on meetings with family members and doctors. The PTI has repeatedly raised concerns over access to Imran Khan and his medical care. The latest demand comes as the party awaits hearings in several cases involving its founder.
