Shell’s net-zero emissions target

Shell’s operating plan and outlook are forecasted for three years and ten-year period, respectively, and are updated every year. They reflect the current economic environment and what we can reasonably expect to see over the next three and ten years.

Accordingly, the outlook reflects our Scope 1, Scope 2 and NCI targets over the next ten years. However, Shell’s operating plan and outlook cannot reflect our 2050

net-zero emissions target, as this target is outside our planning period. Such future operating plans and outlooks could include changes to our portfolio, efficiency improvements and the use of carbon capture and storage and carbon credits.

In the future, as society moves towards net-zero emissions, we expect Shell’s operating plans and outlooks to reflect this movement. However, if society is not net zero in 2050, as of today, there would be significant risk that Shell may not meet this target.

The price of 10 grams of gold also climbed by Rs4,372 to settle at Rs389,519. The increase followed a strong performance in the international bullion market, where gold advanced by $51 per ounce to $4,319, providing fresh support to local prices. Silver also posted notable gains in the domestic market. The price of silver rose by Rs280 per tola to Rs6,939, while the rate for 10 grams increased by Rs240 to Rs5,949. The latest rise comes after substantial increases recorded earlier in the week. On Thursday, gold prices jumped by Rs11,300 per tola, while Wednesday saw another sharp increase of Rs10,000 per tola, reflecting sustained strength in global bullion markets and continued investor demand for the precious metal. Earlier in the week, however, gold prices had briefly softened. On Tuesday, the per-tola price slipped by Rs500 before rebounding strongly over the following days. Despite that temporary dip, the overall trend this week has remained firmly upward, pushing gold to fresh record levels in Pakistan.

Senate seeks review of IPP deals over rising power costs

Islamabad: Independent Power Producers (IPPs) faced strong criticism in the Senate after lawmakers raised serious concerns over billions of rupees paid as capacity payments to power plants that are not fully operational, calling the practice an unnecessary burden on electricity consumers. The issue was discussed during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat, where members questioned the impact of IPP agreements on electricity prices and demanded a complete review of power generation contracts. The committee expressed concern that consumers are paying for electricity capacity even when some power plants are not producing electricity according to expectations. Members said such payments increase the cost of electricity and place additional pressure on ordinary citizens already facing high power bills. The committee directed the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to provide complete details of all Independent Power Producers, including their electricity tariffs, generation capacity, installation costs and rate analysis. The committee chairman stressed that electricity prices must be reviewed and unnecessary costs should be removed to provide relief to consumers. The committee also discussed whether some IPPs had affected the government’s solar energy policy. Members observed that certain power producers had, apparently, created difficulties for the promotion of solar energy initiatives and questioned whether existing agreements were supporting or limiting cheaper energy options. The committee demanded transparency in tariff decisions and questioned why NEPRA had not provided complete tariff determination details despite repeated directions. Lawmakers said clear information was necessary to understand how electricity prices are decided and why consumers continue to face expensive power bills. The committee also discussed imported coal and RLNG based power plants installed in Punjab instead of coastal areas. Officials explained that these plants were established near major electricity demand areas to improve supply efficiency. However, the committee directed NEPRA to provide a detailed comparison of all power projects so that lawmakers could examine costs, benefits and long term impact. The chairman said the government should consider renegotiating IPP agreements where necessary and review contracts of projects that are no longer useful. He said reducing electricity prices requires serious decisions and better management of power sector agreements. The meeting was chaired by Senator Rana Mahmood Ul Hassan and attended by Senators Mohammed Abdul Qadir and Aimal Wali Khan, while other members participated in person and online. The committee also reviewed issues related to circular debt, which remains one of the biggest challenges facing Pakistan’s power sector. Members said increasing electricity costs and financial problems in the energy sector require immediate attention because they directly affect households, businesses and the national economy. The committee’s discussion highlighted concerns over the relationship between power generation costs, IPP agreements and electricity bills paid by consumers. Members called for accountability, transparency and a detailed examination of agreements to ensure that the electricity system works in the public interest. The committee will continue reviewing IPP agreements and related energy sector issues in upcoming

Pakistan’s total debt burden nears Rs84 trillion as government borrowing rises

Pakistan’s total government debt stock climbed to a record level of nearly Rs84 trillion by the end of June 2026, highlighting the growing financial burden facing the country amid continued reliance on domestic and external borrowing. According to the latest data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the federal government’s total debt increased by 7.4% on a year-on-year basis during the fiscal year ended June 2026. The central government’s debt stood at Rs83,642 billion in June 2026, compared with Rs77,888 billion recorded in June 2025. The debt stock also increased significantly on a monthly basis, rising from Rs81,955 billion in May 2026. The latest figures indicate that the government’s debt increased by around Rs5,754 billion, or Rs5.75 trillion, over the course of the fiscal year. Domestic debt remains major component Domestic borrowing accounted for the largest portion of the government’s total debt. According to SBP data, the federal government’s domestic debt rose by 9.1% year-on-year to Rs59,441 billion by June 2026. The increase reflects continued dependence on the domestic financial market to meet the government’s financing requirements, including budgetary needs and debt-servicing obligations. Meanwhile, the federal government’s external debt increased by 3.3% during the year, reaching Rs24,201 billion by June 2026. Although the growth in external debt remained comparatively lower than domestic borrowing, the foreign-currency component continues to place pressure on the country’s external financing position, particularly when debt repayments coincide with periods of weak foreign exchange inflows. Debt servicing poses growing challenge The continued rise in the debt stock is also raising concerns about the government’s ability to manage debt-servicing costs while creating fiscal space for development spending and public services. A growing share of government revenues is required to meet interest and principal repayment obligations, limiting the resources available for infrastructure, social development and other productive investments. Economic experts have warned that if the debt trajectory is not brought under control, the rising burden could turn into a “debt trap” for the economy. They argue that reducing dependence on borrowing would require stronger revenue mobilisation, greater fiscal discipline, higher exports and sustained economic growth. Improving the efficiency of public spending and reducing reliance on debt-financed expenditures could also help contain the pressure.

PSX gains nearly 1,380 points in early Friday trad…

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) staged a strong recovery during the first half of trading on Friday, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index climbing nearly 1,380 points before trading was temporarily suspended for the weekly Friday prayer break. The market opened on a positive note, extending gains throughout the morning session as investors returned to selective buying following recent losses driven by regional geopolitical tensions. By midday, the KSE-100 Index had risen 1,378 points, or 0.79%, to reach 176,926. During intraday trading, the benchmark touched a high of 177,108.66 before easing slightly. The index also found support around 176,405.33, indicating sustained buying interest across key sectors. Trading activity remained steady, with more than 101.8 million shares changing hands during the morning session. The total value of traded shares reached approximately Rs6.96 billion, reflecting healthy market participation despite the shortened trading period. Trading was suspended at midday in line with the Pakistan Stock Exchange’s routine Friday prayer break and was scheduled to resume later in the afternoon. The market’s rebound followed a volatile trading week shaped by uncertainty in the Middle East and fluctuations in global oil prices. Investors appeared to set aside concerns over rising regional tensions and instead focused on attractive valuations in selected stocks. On Thursday, the benchmark index had closed at 175,547.98 after selling pressure weighed on investor sentiment. Friday’s recovery helped the market regain a significant portion of those losses. Broader market performance also remained positive, with the All-Share Index and several sectoral indices posting gains during the morning session. Market participants are expected to closely monitor both domestic economic developments and geopolitical events in the Middle East as trading resumes, with investors assessing their potential impact on market sentiment in the coming sessions.
