Punjab to modernize Civil Defence with Rs500m equipment

Lahore – Under the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif for a “Safe Punjab,” the Civil Defence Resilience Corps is being modernized in line with contemporary requirements to help establish a safer society and respond effectively to emergencies.

In this regard, Punjab Home Secretary Dr. Ahmed Javed Qazi visited the Civil Defence Headquarters where a smartly turned-out Civil Defence contingent presented him with a guard of honour. The Home Secretary inspected a display of modern equipment and also inaugurated a renovated block of the headquarters.

On the occasion, Director Civil Defence Tasneem Ali Khan and Zigham Nawaz briefed the Punjab Home Secretary on the capacity, modern equipment and rescue capabilities of Civil Defence.

The modern equipment displayed by Civil Defence included aerial-lift drones, IED bomb-disposal drones, bomb-disposal robots, anti-drone guns, electric sirens, bomb-disposal suits, bomb blankets, mine detectors, snake cameras, hook-and-line kits, mobile bomb-disposal bikes and advanced firefighting equipment.

Speaking on the occasion, Punjab Home Secretary Dr. Ahmed Javed Qazi said that the Civil Defence Resilience Corps is an important step toward a safe, capable and responsible Punjab. He said the Punjab government is taking practical measures to bring Civil Defence in line with the requirements of the modern era.

He said that modern equipment worth Rs500 million has been purchased to modernize Civil Defence. He added that the advanced aerial-lift drones are capable of rescuing people trapped in difficult-to-access areas and can carry loads of up to 200 kilograms.

Dr. Ahmed Javed Qazi said that Civil Defence is equally important during both peace and wartime and serves as the first line of response for district administrations during any emergency situation.

The Punjab Home Secretary said that the Chief Minister has increased the honorarium of Civil Defence volunteers in recognition of their services and performance. He urged citizens to join Civil Defence as volunteers according to their abilities.

According to him, more than 350,000 citizens have so far registered as Civil Defence volunteers.

The Home Secretary said that all Civil Defence volunteers are being provided with Basic Life Support (BLS) training so that they can provide timely assistance to save lives during natural disasters, accidents and medical emergencies.

He appealed to citizens to become part of Civil Defence by registering as volunteers through the online portal VCD.HOME.GOP.PK.

    Army captain martyred, seven militants killed in Hangu operation A Pakistan Army captain was martyred during an intelligence-based operation in Hangu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while security forces killed seven militants, according to the military’s media wing. The operation was carried out on August 7 after security agencies received information about the presence of militants in the area. Security forces launched the raid after confirming the reported militant presence. Troops engaged the militants at their hideout. Seven militants were killed during the exchange of fire. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Captain Hamza was leading his troops from the front. He continued pursuing the militants during the firefight and lost his life while performing his duty. Security forces recovered weapons and ammunition from the militants’ possession. The military said the killed militants were involved in attacks against security personnel and law enforcement agencies. They were also linked to attacks targeting civilians. A clearance operation was launched after the main engagement. Security personnel searched the surrounding area to ensure that no militants remained there. Three militants killed in Mastung operation In a separate operation in Balochistan, security forces killed three militants in Mastung district. The operation was conducted in the Kambela and Asimabad areas as part of Operation Rad-ul-Fitna-3. Security forces carried out an extensive search and clearance operation across an area of around 68 square kilometres. Three militants were killed during the operation. The bodies of two of the militants were recovered. Four other militants were injured, including a key commander identified as Shaukat Mama, according to security sources. Security personnel also detained 12 suspects for questioning during the operation. Militant hideouts were dismantled during the clearance activity. Security forces also removed flags associated with the militant group from the cleared areas. The latest operations come amid continued security challenges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Both provinces have witnessed a significant number of militant attacks in recent years. Security forces have intensified intelligence-based operations to target militant networks, their hideouts and support structures.

    RAWALPINDI: The Punjab Council of the Arts, Rawalpindi held the prize distribution ceremony of its Independence Day painting competition, “Azadi Kay Rang,” today. Mr. Rizwan Khalil Shamsi, Chief Manager, State Bank, and Ms. Shazia Rizwan, Parliamentary Secretary for Information and Culture, Government of the Punjab, attended the ceremony as Chief Guests. The competition provided young artists with a creative platform to express their vision of independence, patriotism, and love for Pakistan through art. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Rizwan Khalil Shamsi, Chief Manager, State Bank, appreciated the enthusiasm and artistic talent displayed by the young participants. She emphasized that art and cultural activities play an important role in nurturing creativity, national awareness, and a positive outlook among the younger generation. She distributed prizes and certificates among the winning participants and congratulated all the artists. Muhammad Shakoor, Director, Punjab Council of the Arts, Rawalpindi, thanked both Chief Guests, the judges, participating artists, and guests for their presence and support. He particularly appreciated the efforts of Senior Artist Azeem Iqbal, who played a key role in organising and coordinating the painting competition. He acknowledged his dedication and valuable contribution in making the event successful and said that such efforts are essential for providing young artists with meaningful opportunities to showcase their talent. He reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to encouraging emerging artists and promoting art and cultural activities in the region.

    MULTAN: Five members of a family were hospitalized after allegedly suffering food poisoning following the consumption of tea in Multan, rescue officials said on Saturday. The incident occurred near Godam Chowk, where the affected family members reportedly became ill after drinking tea. According to the family, a dead lizard was later discovered inside the teapot, raising concerns that it may have contaminated the drink. Rescue personnel reached the scene and provided initial medical assistance to the victims. Following a preliminary examination, all five patients were shifted to Nishtar Hospital for further treatment. Authorities are expected to investigate the incident and determine how the lizard ended up in the teapot.

    ISLAMABAD: Weekly inflation in Pakistan increased by 0.15% during the latest week, taking the overall annual inflation rate to 9.11%, according to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). The statistics agency issued its weekly inflation report, showing mixed price trends for essential commodities. According to the report, prices of 20 essential items increased during the week, while nine items became cheaper. Prices of 22 commodities remained unchanged. Onion recorded the sharpest increase, with its price rising by 24.68% in one week. The price of gram lentils also increased by 3.35%. Chicken became 2.45% more expensive during the week. Prices of several other household essentials, including yogurt, garlic and tea, also recorded increases. The report showed that some major commodities became cheaper. Tomato prices declined by 1.26% during the week. Petroleum prices also decreased. Petrol became 2.35% cheaper, while diesel prices fell by 0.29%. The prices of sugar, eggs and potatoes also recorded declines during the week. The latest figures indicate continued fluctuations in the prices of essential commodities. While several food items became more expensive, reductions in petroleum prices and some food products provided some relief to consumers. The weekly inflation figures are closely monitored as they reflect short-term changes in the prices of goods commonly purchased by households. The annual inflation rate, meanwhile, provides a broader picture of price increases across the economy.

    Mild earthquake jolts parts of Karachi

    A mild earthquake was recorded in Karachi on Friday evening, with tremors felt across several parts of the city. The shaking caused brief panic among residents, although no casualties or damage were reported. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the earthquake measured 2.9 on the Richter scale. The seismic event originated at a depth of 10 kilometres, with its epicentre located within Karachi. The PMD said the earthquake struck at 6:01 pm, and its relatively shallow depth allowed tremors to be felt in different neighbourhoods. Authorities said there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage to buildings or infrastructure. Residents in several areas experienced light shaking, but the situation remained calm after the tremors subsided. Officials continue to monitor seismic activity and have advised the public to remain alert while assuring that no emergency situation has been reported following the low-intensity earthquake.
