Trainee doctors’ stipend dispute reaches Senate,…

Islamabad: The Senate Standing Committee on National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination has taken serious notice of complaints by trainee doctors regarding unpaid or reduced stipends and directed authorities to protect the rights of young doctors working in training programmes.

During the meeting held in Karachi under the chairmanship of Senator Amir Waliuddin Chishti, the Committee reviewed the implementation of its previous recommendations regarding the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP). Members observed that earlier directions issued by the Committee had not been implemented in their true spirit and directed CPSP to ensure complete compliance.

The matter became serious when a delegation of 14 trainee doctors from Sobhraj Maternity Hospital appeared before the Committee and alleged that the hospital was not following the stipend directions issued by the Ministry and CPSP. The trainee doctors claimed they were being paid below the prescribed stipend amount, creating financial difficulties for doctors already working in demanding medical training environments.

Taking notice of the complaints, Chairman Committee Senator Amir Waliuddin Chishti directed the Ministry of National Health Services to coordinate with the provincial government and resolve the issue without delay. He also directed CPSP to register the affected doctors from the date they joined, ensuring their training status and rights were properly recognized.

CPSP officials informed the Committee that necessary directions had already been issued to affiliated institutions regarding the implementation of the Committee’s recommendations. The Committee appreciated the steps taken by CPSP but emphasized that instructions must be followed practically at the institutional level so trainee doctors do not face difficulties.

The Committee was also informed that the issue of revising trainee doctors’ stipends was currently awaiting approval from the Prime Minister. The Secretary of National Health Services informed members about the pending approval process regarding the revision of stipends for trainees.

The Committee’s action comes amid wider concerns about healthcare conditions and the challenges faced by medical professionals during training. Chairman Senator Amir Waliuddin Chishti also directed that the Committee should visit different provinces to examine the healthcare system and meet relevant stakeholders. The first visit will be to Punjab, with the next Committee meeting scheduled in Lahore.

The Senate Committee directed the concerned ministries and organizations to submit progress reports on the matters discussed before the next meeting, making it clear that implementation of decisions would be closely monitored.

Chelsea complete £52 million signing of France defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace

Chelsea have signed France international defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace in a deal reported to be worth 52 million pounds, or roughly 69 million dollars. Lacroix has put pen to paper on a six year contract with the Blues and will now join his new teammates for pre season training. The 26 year old has earned seven caps for France and featured for his country at the recent World Cup. Speaking after the move was confirmed, Lacroix said he felt proud to become part of a club with Chelsea’s history and winning tradition. He said his conversation with the club’s manager convinced him they share the same vision and ambition, adding that the quality of the squad and the resources around the club make winning trophies a realistic goal he is eager to help achieve. Lacroix joined Crystal Palace from Wolfsburg in 2024 and went on to make 98 appearances for the club. During his time at Selhurst Park, he helped Palace win the FA Cup, the UEFA Conference League and the Community Shield. The defender becomes the latest addition to new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso’s rebuilding effort this close season. Alonso has already overseen a British record 117 million pound deal for Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers and a 47 million pound move for Atalanta right back Marco Palestra. Winger Geovany Quenda and forward Emmanuel Emegha have also joined the club, completing transfers that were initially agreed last year. Chelsea have further been linked with moves for Brighton striker Danny Welbeck and Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson. Alonso took charge of the club on July 1 and is tasked with reviving a Chelsea side that finished a disappointing 10th in the Premier League last season, a result that left the club without European football for the upcoming campaign.

Trump hints at outcome from CIA chief’s surp…

US President Donald Trump said something may come out of an unannounced meeting his CIA director held with Russian intelligence officials in Moscow on Tuesday, fueling speculation about the purpose of the trip amid stalled efforts to end the war in Ukraine. CIA Director John Ratcliffe flew into Moscow aboard a military aircraft and departed just hours later, and neither Trump nor US officials disclosed what the two sides discussed. Trump described the meeting as semi routine and said Washington wants to see the war in Ukraine come to an end. The last comparable high level contact between the two countries occurred in the months before Russia’s full scale invasion of Ukraine began. The Kremlin said Ratcliffe did not meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit. Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters that contacts took place with Russian intelligence services but that no meeting occurred with Putin himself, adding that the president receives immediate briefings on all such matters. Peskov made the remarks in response to a question from a reporter with a Russian state affiliated newspaper, who asked whether Putin had been informed of the talks and at what level they took place. When the BBC’s Russia editor asked Peskov what topics the CIA discussions covered, he said he had nothing further to add beyond his earlier comments. He also said it remains too early to determine what effect the meeting might have on repairing the deeply strained relationship between Washington and Moscow, calling any assessment of the broader recovery process premature at this stage. Peskov described intelligence contacts between the two countries as a positive development, noting that such channels often remain open even during the most difficult periods in bilateral relations. Ahead of the visit, US officials informed Ukraine that a senior American delegation would travel to Moscow and asked Kyiv to pause strikes until the delegation had departed, according to a senior Ukrainian official who spoke to another news organization. Neither the CIA, the White House nor the Pentagon has issued an official statement addressing Ratcliffe’s trip. Ratcliffe now ranks among the highest level American officials to visit Russia during Trump’s second term in office. The last time a sitting CIA director traveled to Moscow was in November 2021, when then director William Burns warned Russian officials against sending troops into Ukraine. Weeks after that visit, the Kremlin launched its full scale invasion of the country. Since the invasion began, the United States has maintained a strained relationship with Russia, which has faced international isolation and sweeping economic sanctions. Trump met with Putin at a summit in Alaska last year, though the talks failed to produce any major breakthrough, and subsequent peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine led by the United States appear to have stalled since then. John Foreman, who served as Britain’s military attache in Moscow between 2019 and 2022, told a radio program that American officials rarely send such a senior figure to Moscow unannounced and on short notice unless a significant development is underway. The unannounced nature of Ratcliffe’s visit, combined with the lack of official confirmation from Washington, has left analysts and diplomats speculating about whether the trip signals renewed backchannel efforts to break the deadlock in the Ukraine peace process, though officials on both sides have offered little indication of what practical outcome, if any, the meeting might produce.

Federal agents arrest armed suspect near Donald Trump’s California golf course

Federal and local law enforcement officers in California have arrested a 38-year-old man who was observed taking photographs and monitoring security preparations at President Donald Trump’s golf course in Rancho Palos Verdes, two days before the president was scheduled to attend a political fundraising dinner at the venue. The suspect, identified as Jeanine John Taele of Downey, California, was taken into custody on Sunday afternoon by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies and federal agents. Authorities revealed that Taele had initially been spotted on the grounds of Trump National Golf Club on Friday, wearing an earpiece while filming federal personnel carrying out security assessments. Upon returning to the property on Sunday, Taele allegedly approached federal agents, falsely claimed to work for the US Department of State on a security detail, and admitted to possessing a loaded weapon inside his vehicle. Upon searching the suspect, law enforcement officers recovered a 16-round magazine loaded with hollow-point ammunition from his clothing. A subsequent search of his pickup truck parked on the property yielded a loaded 9mm pistol, additional hollow-point rounds, binoculars, and a fake badge reading “security protection agent”. Officers also determined that Taele was actively wanted in connection with an unrelated robbery investigation conducted by the El Segundo Police Department. Following the arrest, agents from the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Sheriff’s Department Major Crimes Bureau executed a search warrant at Taele’s residence in Downey. Investigators seized an illegally modified short-barrelled AR-style rifle, a .45-calibre handgun, body armour, high-capacity magazines, extensive ammunition supplies, and notebooks containing what officials described as “concerning statements”. Taele, a decorated US Marine Corps veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2008 and 2016, faces both state and federal charges. State prosecutors in Los Angeles County have charged him with second-degree robbery, possession of a short-barrelled rifle, manufacturing or receiving a large-capacity magazine, and carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle. He pleaded not guilty to state charges on Tuesday and remains held on $250,000 bail. Federal prosecutors have separately charged Taele with possession of an unregistered short-barrelled rifle, an offence carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison. While the Secret Service and the FBI continue to investigate Taele’s motives, officials from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated that there is currently no evidence of a direct, ongoing threat to the local community. President Trump proceeded with his planned visit to California, landing at the golf course via helicopter to host the Republican fundraising event.

Karachi seals 200 shops in Saddar over fire safety…

The Karachi administration has sealed 200 shops in Saddar for violating fire safety regulations, as authorities intensify efforts to enforce safety standards across commercial areas. The action was taken after inspections revealed that several businesses were operating without complying with mandatory fire safety requirements. The action was taken after inspections revealed that several businesses were operating without complying with mandatory fire safety requirements. According to officials, Deputy Commissioner South Javed Nabi Khoso submitted a report to Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi detailing enforcement measures taken against businesses found in violation of fire safety laws across the district. The report stated that the sealed shops are primarily located on the ground floor of Bilal Centre and Koh Noor Centre in Saddar. Authorities found that these commercial units failed to meet prescribed fire safety standards and were operating in conditions considered unsafe for customers and employees. The crackdown forms part of a broader campaign to improve compliance with fire prevention regulations in Karachi’s busy commercial districts. Officials have emphasized that ensuring public safety remains a top priority, particularly in crowded shopping centers where inadequate emergency measures can increase the risk of serious incidents. Following the inspection drive, Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi directed all deputy commissioners in the city to strictly enforce fire safety regulations and take action against businesses that fail to comply with legal requirements. The directive aims to improve safety standards in markets, shopping centers, and commercial buildings throughout Karachi. Fire safety regulations typically require commercial establishments to maintain functioning fire extinguishers, emergency exits, alarm systems, and other protective measures designed to reduce the risk of fire-related accidents. Authorities have warned that businesses found violating these requirements may face sealing, fines, or additional legal action until the necessary safety measures are implemented. The latest enforcement drive reflects growing efforts by the city administration to strengthen public safety following concerns over fire hazards in commercial areas. Shop owners whose businesses have been sealed will be required to address the identified deficiencies and meet the prescribed safety standards before they can resume operations. Officials have indicated that inspections will continue across Karachi to ensure compliance with fire safety laws, with similar action expected against other businesses that fail to meet the required standards. The administration has urged commercial property owners and traders to fully implement fire safety measures to avoid penalties and help create a safer environment for workers and the public.
