Kinza Hashmi visits National Assembly after praise…

Pakistani actor Kinza Hashmi visited the National Assembly after receiving praise from lawmakers for her portrayal of a politically influential woman in the drama Leader.

Hashmi was invited to the parliament by MNA Romina Khurshid Alam. The actor shared highlights from her visit in an Instagram reel on Thursday.

During the visit, Alam accompanied Hashmi through different parts of the National Assembly building. She showed the actor several artworks, historical displays, dioramas and other artefacts kept inside the building.

Hashmi also visited the National Assembly floor and met staff members. She later spent time in Alam’s office, where the lawmaker presented her with a token of appreciation.

Alam praised Hashmi for bringing the experiences and challenges of women involved in politics to television. She said she was proud of the actor’s work and appreciated the way she represented female politicians through her performance.

The lawmaker described Hashmi’s portrayal as meaningful and said her work had helped bring greater attention to the role of women in political life.

Hashmi also met Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar during her visit. According to the actor, they held a productive discussion about several important matters.

She said the conversation particularly focused on issues faced by women working in Pakistan’s media industry.

Reflecting on her parliamentary visit, Hashmi said the experience gave her a better understanding of the character she plays in Leader. She noted that politics is not simply about privilege or power. It also involves responsibility, public service, duty and long-term commitment.

The actor said visiting the parliament allowed her to see the political system from a different perspective. The experience also helped her connect more deeply with the themes explored through her character.

Hashmi’s performance in Leader has recently attracted attention from several politicians. In July, Romina Khurshid Alam and Balochistan MNA Jamal Raisani publicly praised her acting.

Alam said Hashmi had fully embraced the character and described her performance as outstanding. Raisani also expressed appreciation for the actor’s portrayal.

Deputy commissioners were asked to maintain close coordination with contractors and the managing directors of Water and Sanitation Authorities to monitor progress. The chief minister also called for uniform standards for field monitoring officers and directed that their motorcycles carry proper branding. Standard operating procedures are to be developed to evaluate sanitation performance at every level, from field workers to senior officers, with particular attention to cleanliness in fruit and vegetable markets. She directed that contractors violating sanitation standards should initially be given 24 hours to correct shortcomings before any financial penalty is imposed. “Imposing fines is not our objective; the focus should be on ensuring cleanliness,” she said, while calling for zero tolerance against persistent negligence. The chief minister also ordered regular cleaning of Suthra Punjab vehicles, waste containers and collection points.     Bodies of Nirmal Purja, three teammates recovered …

    SKARDU: Rescue teams have recovered the bodies of celebrated British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja and three members of his expedition from Broad Peak after a difficult recovery mission, the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP) confirmed. The recovery operation was carried out in extremely challenging weather and terrain. The bodies of Purja, Chinese climber Zhong Wang, and Nepali climbers Nima Sherpa and Kilu Sherpa were successfully brought to Broad Peak Base Camp. The tragic incident occurred on July 30, when an avalanche struck the 10-member international expedition while climbing Broad Peak, one of the world’s highest mountains. Contact with the team was lost immediately after the avalanche. Purja’s company later confirmed that there were no survivors from the expedition. Despite the successful recovery of four bodies, three climbers remain missing. The Alpine Club of Pakistan said search efforts would continue whenever weather and mountain conditions permit. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to locating the remaining climbers so their families can receive closure. Earlier, the bodies of three other expedition members—an American woman, an Omani woman and a Nepali climber—were airlifted from the mountain to Skardu. However, the bodies of two Nepali nationals and one Pakistani climber have yet to be recovered. The deaths have deeply affected the global mountaineering community. Anthropic’s Dario Amodei has gone further, putting the odds of things going “really, really badly” at around 25%. These warnings are not new either. Physicist Stephen Hawking, who used AI tools himself, raised similar concerns long before ChatGPT even existed. Ibrahim compares the situation to the pandemic, pointing out that the worst risks rarely arrive the way people expect. She noted that entire industries failed to properly weigh risk during earlier tech shifts, including the rise of the internet and social media. She is just as sceptical of the optimistic predictions floating around. Elon Musk recently told The Economist that money will stop mattering by 2036, imagining a future of cheap abundance and universal high income once robots take over most jobs. Jeff Bezos has predicted millions of people living in space by 2045. Sam Altman, meanwhile, envisions new job opportunities specifically for graduates working in space. Ibrahim isn’t convinced by either scenario, arguing that AI simply is not developing fast enough to make these predictions realistic anytime soon. Rather than debating far-off futures, Ibrahim says she is more focused on using AI to tackle problems happening right now. She pointed to climate change and industrial pollution as areas where the technology could make a real difference. She was also clear that AI’s benefits should not be limited to a handful of powerful companies. For her, that is just as important as managing the risks.
