Sindh Colleges ban Ajrak, caps and gifts for visit…

KARACHI: The Sindh College Education Department has directed government colleges across the province to stop presenting traditional gifts and souvenirs to the Secretary College Education during official visits.

The directive, issued on August 6, instructs the Director General Colleges and regional directors in Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Shaheed Benazirabad, Sukkur and Larkana, along with principals of government colleges, to ensure that no gifts are presented to the secretary during his visits.

The department has specifically prohibited the presentation of Ajrak, Sindhi caps and bouquets. It has also made clear that commemorative shields, souvenirs and other ceremonial items should not be offered.

Officials have been asked to strictly follow the instructions and ensure that the directive is implemented in both letter and spirit.

The department has warned that any failure to comply with the orders will be taken seriously, signalling a move away from the customary practice of presenting traditional gifts to senior officials during official visits.

    CHAKWAL: Authorities have busted an illegal cigarette factory near Dhrabi village in Chakwal and seized goods, machinery and raw materials worth more than Rs250 million, according to officials. The raid was conducted jointly by the Intelligence and Investigation team of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and other intelligence officials following a tip-off about an illegal cigarette manufacturing network operating in the area. According to FBR officials, the facility was a complete cigarette manufacturing unit that allegedly operated at night to evade Federal Excise Duty (FED) and General Sales Tax (GST). The factory was reportedly producing cigarettes under different brand names and supplying them to the market. Officials said the manufacturing unit was not registered with the FBR. The cigarette packets also allegedly lacked barcodes, which authorities said was part of the tax-evasion mechanism. The raid uncovered a substantial manufacturing operation. Eleven cigarette-making machines and three industrial generators were sealed during the operation. A large warehouse at the site contained significant quantities of finished cigarettes and raw materials. Authorities seized approximately 72,000 cigarette packets that were ready for sale, along with around 12,000 kilograms of raw tobacco. Other materials recovered from the premises included white paper rolls, silver and golden packaging rolls, aluminium foil rolls, polythene rolls and more than 107,000 empty cigarette packets. Officials also confiscated 30 cartons of filter rods, 14 cartons of filter paper, adhesive material and drums used in the manufacturing process. The initial assessment by FBR officials puts the combined value of the raw materials, finished products and seized machinery at more than Rs250 million. Authorities are also calculating the potential amount of tax allegedly evaded through the operation. The discovery highlights the scale of illegal cigarette manufacturing and the potential loss of government revenue through unregistered production and tax evasion. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the illegal cigarette network to determine the individuals and businesses involved in the manufacturing and distribution of the products. The illegal cigarette factory in Chakwal is among the latest targets of enforcement operations aimed at curbing illicit tobacco production and protecting government tax revenues.

    SBP chief reaffirms Islamic banking push

    State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Jameel Ahmad has reaffirmed the central bank’s commitment to implementing a fully Shariah-compliant financial system, saying the SBP continues to work closely with the government to achieve the country’s Islamic banking goals. Addressing a ceremony via video link, Ahmad said the central bank has introduced several measures to facilitate freelancers, helping them receive payments more easily through formal banking channels. He noted that these initiatives have contributed to an increase in workers’ remittances and strengthened the flow of foreign exchange into Pakistan. The SBP governor said the central bank has established a dedicated steering committee to oversee the transition toward Islamic banking. He added that the SBP is revising its regulatory and operational framework to ensure it fully complies with Shariah principles while supporting the financial sector’s gradual transformation. Ahmad recalled that Pakistan’s founder, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, had expressed the vision of an Islamic financial system during the inauguration of the State Bank in 1948. He said the government has adopted a roadmap to implement a complete Islamic banking system by December 2027, and the SBP remains committed to meeting that target in collaboration with relevant stakeholders. He also revealed that work is underway to develop a comprehensive asset register for government-owned assets, describing it as an important step in supporting Islamic finance initiatives. Stressing the importance of skilled professionals, Ahmad said expanding the capacity of the banking workforce will play a key role in ensuring the successful implementation of the Islamic banking system across the country.
