American tourist killed by lightning strike on Mount Etna

An American tourist has died after being struck by lightning while hiking on Mount Etna in Sicily. Italian firefighters confirmed the incident on Monday, adding new details to the tragedy.

The victim, a 29-year-old man from Kansas, was struck on Sunday evening while hiking through an exposed section of the volcano above the tree line. Mount Etna is widely known as Europe’s most active volcano.

Emergency crews responded quickly, rescuing the tourist by helicopter following the lightning strike. Despite the swift response, he was later pronounced dead by medical personnel at the scene. Authorities have not yet released his identity publicly.

The area where the incident occurred had reportedly been closed to visitors due to recent volcanic activity. Officials have restricted access to large sections of the volcano’s slopes following an extended period of heightened activity in recent weeks.

That same volcanic activity had already caused significant disruption in the region. Catania airport, one of Sicily’s key international travel hubs, was forced to shut down for much of the previous week because of ongoing eruptions.

Despite Mount Etna’s frequent volcanic activity, officials noted something notable about the risks the mountain actually poses. Lightning strikes have caused more fatalities on the volcano in recent decades than the eruptions themselves.

According to officials, the most recent deaths directly linked to a Mount Etna eruption date back to 1987. That statistic highlights how unpredictable weather, rather than volcanic danger, remains the more immediate threat to hikers today.

Mount Etna sits on the eastern side of Sicily, near the city of Catania. Despite ongoing volcanic activity and periodic access restrictions, it continues to draw large numbers of hikers and tourists throughout the year.

Sunday’s tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable risks tied to hiking in exposed, high-altitude terrain, even in areas officially closed to the public. Authorities are expected to review safety measures and access restrictions around the volcano following the incident.

President approves Nishan-i-Imtiaz for Strategic C…

President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the conferment of the Nishan-i-Imtiaz (Military) on General Syed Aamer Raza, the newly appointed Commander of the National Strategic Command (NSC). The announcement was made by the President’s Secretariat through a post on X, stating that the country’s highest civilian office had endorsed the prestigious military honour for General Raza in recognition of his distinguished service. General Raza has previously received the Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military) and the Sitara-i-Basalat, reflecting a career marked by operational leadership and professional excellence. His latest recognition comes shortly after his promotion to the rank of four-star general and appointment as Pakistan’s first Commander of the National Strategic Command. The position was created as part of the sweeping reforms introduced under the 27th Constitutional Amendment, which reshaped the country’s higher defence structure. Under the new framework, the office of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee was abolished and replaced by the position of Chief of Defence Forces, a role currently held concurrently by Field Marshal Asim Munir as Chief of Army Staff. The National Strategic Command serves as the unified operational headquarters for Pakistan’s strategic forces, bringing together the strategic commands of the Army, Navy and Air Force under one command. Despite this restructuring, the National Command Authority, chaired by the prime minister, remains the country’s highest decision-making body on nuclear policy and strategic employment. General Raza was appointed to the post by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the recommendation of the Chief of Defence Forces. As provided under the amended Army Act, the appointment carries a three-year tenure. Before assuming his new responsibilities, General Raza served as Chief of General Staff, where he supervised key operational planning and played a central role in implementing military reforms introduced after the constitutional changes. He also oversaw organisational restructuring following last year’s conflict with India, including the establishment of the Army Rocket Force Command. Commissioned into the 6th Lancers in 1988 after graduating from the Officers Training School (OTS), General Raza has held several important command and staff appointments throughout his military career. These include commanding an armoured regiment, an armoured brigade, an infantry brigade in South Waziristan, an infantry division and Lahore’s IV Corps. He has also served as Chairman of Heavy Industries Taxila, Director General Weapons and Equipment, and Chief of Staff at II Corps.

NAB clarifies Rs500 million jurisdiction threshold

ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has internally clarified that inflation-based adjustments to the value of liabilities cannot be used retrospectively to bring older, lower-value corruption cases under its jurisdiction. The clarification follows the enforcement of the National Accountability (Amendment) Act 2026 on March 5. NAB has issued internal guidance for prosecutors and investigators to ensure a uniform legal position on the revised Rs500 million threshold. Under the amended law, an offence falls within NAB’s jurisdiction when it involves corruption or misconduct involving at least Rs500 million. The law also links the financial threshold to annual inflation indicators issued by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, with the adjustment taking effect from July 1, 2026. However, NAB’s internal interpretation distinguishes between the statutory jurisdictional threshold and the inflation-adjusted value of liabilities. The Rs500 million figure remains the basic test for determining jurisdiction. Inflation adjustment is applied only after the actual liability involved in a case has been finally determined. The guidance identifies three situations based on when the alleged offence occurred. For offences committed before July 2022, the original amount involved will be assessed according to the year in which the offence took place. No inflation adjustment will be applied retrospectively. If the final liability is Rs500 million or more, NAB will retain jurisdiction. If it is below Rs500 million, the case will fall outside NAB’s jurisdiction and may be transferred to the ordinary courts. For offences committed after July 2022, the Rs500 million threshold will initially determine NAB’s jurisdiction. Once an inquiry or investigation establishes the final amount involved, the relevant inflation index for the year in which the case reaches its final stage will be applied if the original liability is at least Rs500 million. The final reference will therefore contain both the original liability and its inflation-adjusted value. If the original liability is below Rs500 million, no inflation adjustment will be made and NAB’s jurisdiction will cease. The third category concerns continuing offences that began before July 2022 but continued after that date. Such cases will be treated in the same manner as offences committed after July 2022. The guidance further states that once the original liability has been finally established and the inflation-adjusted amount has been calculated, the resulting figure will be considered final. It will not be repeatedly revised on the basis of inflation increases in subsequent years. According to the internal legal position, linking the financial threshold to inflation was intended to keep the threshold realistic and relevant over time and prevent inflation from reducing its practical value. NAB has also clarified that the amendment was not intended to retrospectively expand the bureau’s jurisdiction or disadvantage accused persons. The 2026 amendments made another significant change by expanding provisions concerning the transfer of cases falling outside NAB’s jurisdiction. The relevant provision now extends to pending appeals as well, whereas the earlier framework was primarily limited to inquiries, investigations and trials.

Just minutes of intense exercise may offer greater health benefits

A new study by American scientists has revealed that just a few minutes of extremely intense exercise may provide greater health benefits than spending hours doing light or moderate physical activity. The study examined how different levels of exercise affect proteins and biological processes in the human body. Researchers found that short bursts of high-intensity exercise produced significantly greater changes in health-related proteins in the blood compared with cycling at a normal pace. As part of the research, participants performed intense cycling on an exercise bike in 30-second bursts. Each high-speed cycling session was followed by a four-minute recovery period. Researchers observed positive changes in 714 proteins associated with health and bodily functions after the intense exercise. In comparison, cycling at a normal pace affected only seven proteins highlighting the potentially powerful biological response triggered by short periods of vigorous physical activity. One of the most interesting findings involved a molecule known as Lac-Phe, which has been linked to appetite regulation and metabolism. According to the researchers, intense exercise increases levels of Lac-Phe in the body. The molecule may help regulate hunger and appears to influence fat metabolism. The researchers also found that intense physical activity activated more than 1,600 genes in fat cells, potentially increasing the body’s ability to burn or process fat. These findings suggest that high-intensity exercise may trigger a much broader metabolic response than previously understood. To further examine the possible long-term health implications, the scientists analyzed data from more than 53,000 people. Their analysis showed that several of the proteins activated by intense exercise were associated with a lower risk of conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity. The researchers also found connections between these biological changes and processes related to aging. This suggests that intense physical activity may potentially help slow some of the biological effects associated with aging, although further research is needed to fully understand these relationships. Dr. Paul Cohen, the lead researcher of the study, said the findings were particularly interesting because they demonstrated how the body can produce a powerful positive response after only a few minutes of intense exercise. He noted that the discovery could be particularly useful for people with busy lifestyles who struggle to find enough time for lengthy workouts. Instead of spending several hours exercising, short periods of high-intensity activity may provide substantial biological benefits. The findings add to growing scientific evidence that the intensity of exercise may be just as important as its duration. While regular physical activity remains essential for maintaining overall health, the study suggests that brief periods of vigorous exercise could be an efficient way to stimulate important metabolic and cardiovascular responses. However, intense exercise is not necessarily suitable for everyone. People who are new to exercise or have existing health concerns should consider their fitness level and consult a qualified healthcare professional before beginning high-intensity workouts. Overall, the study offers an encouraging message for people who find it difficult to dedicate long hours to exercise. A carefully structured routine involving short bursts of intense activity may potentially produce significant health benefits, making exercise more practical for people with demanding daily schedules.

Iran claims 200+ US troops killed as Tehran warns …

TEHRAN: Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that more than 200 US military personnel were killed and many others wounded during Iranian retaliatory attacks amid the latest escalation between Tehran and Washington. The claim, however, has not been independently verified, and no immediate confirmation or denial of the reported US casualties was available from American officials. IRGC spokesman Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi rejected figures released by Washington, arguing that they did not reflect the full extent of losses suffered by US forces during the conflict. Speaking to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency, Mohebbi said Iranian forces had targeted US military facilities across the region. He claimed that eight American military centers were struck and that around 20 protective shelters at one location were destroyed. The IRGC spokesman challenged Washington to allow journalists access to the affected military sites, saying such visits would reveal the extent of the damage. He accused US authorities of withholding information about casualties and military losses. Iran claims major US aircraft losses Mohebbi also claimed that Iranian attacks during roughly two weeks of fighting destroyed 11 US warplanes and helicopters on the ground. According to the IRGC account, the reported losses included an F-15 fighter jet, a P-8 maritime patrol aircraft, a C-17 transport aircraft and eight aerial refueling planes. Iran also claimed that 17 reconnaissance and operational drones were destroyed, including eight described as brand-new. The claims represent a potentially significant escalation in Tehran’s portrayal of the conflict. Independent confirmation of the reported aircraft losses has not emerged, and the locations of the alleged strikes have not been publicly specified. The statements came as tensions between Iran and the United States remained high, even as diplomatic contacts appeared to be continuing. Reports indicate that Washington and Tehran have exchanged messages through intermediaries, although major differences and deep mistrust remain. IRGC issues warning to Israel Iran also issued a fresh warning to Israel, saying Tel Aviv could face serious consequences if it re-enters the conflict. The IRGC said Iranian forces were closely monitoring the possibility of Israeli involvement and had prepared their strategy accordingly. The latest claims add another layer of uncertainty to an already volatile situation. With casualty figures and battlefield damage disputed by the opposing sides, the coming days could determine whether the confrontation moves toward diplomacy—or another dangerous round of escalation.
