New KIA Sportage develops repeated fault within 90…

Islamabad: A consumer court in Islamabad admitted a complaint against KIA Lucky Motors Corporation and related parties after a customer claimed that his brand new KIA Sportage developed a serious technical fault within days of purchase, rendering it unusable despite repeated inspections and repairs.

The complaint has been filed under the Islamabad Consumer Protection Act, 1995, and the court has started regular hearing of the matter after reviewing the initial arguments.

According to the complaint, the vehicle developed a “Shifter System Malfunctioning: Service Immediately” warning after covering only around 900 kilometres, causing the vehicle to stop working properly and requiring assistance.

The complainant claimed that the same problem appeared again shortly after the first repair, raising concerns about the reliability and safety of a newly purchased vehicle.

The case was filed against KIA Lucky Motors Corporation, its officials, the Islamabad dealership and KIA Corporation South Korea. The court issued notices to the concerned respondents for appearance and response.

The complaint states that the customer purchased the KIA Sportage for personal and official use with the expectation that a new vehicle would be safe, reliable and free from defects. According to the documents, the vehicle was purchased on 13 February 2026 for Rs11.299 million.

The customer alleged that while travelling for an official assignment, the vehicle suddenly displayed the shifter system warning and the gear system stopped functioning properly. He claimed that after reaching his destination, the same issue happened again, forcing him to seek help from the company.

According to the complaint, the dealership initially informed the customer that the problem was caused by loose internal wiring. The vehicle was inspected and the customer was assured that the issue had been resolved and the vehicle was safe to drive.

However, the customer claimed that the same warning appeared again on 30 May 2026 while he was travelling with his family, leaving the vehicle unusable and forcing him to arrange alternative transport.

The complaint further states that the vehicle had to be taken away through a recovery service after attempts to fix the problem failed.

The customer has alleged that different explanations were provided regarding the cause of the fault, including wiring issues, moisture concerns and failure of the Shifter Control Module, a key part of the vehicle’s transmission system.

The complaint argues that these different explanations created further doubts about the actual cause of the problem and the effectiveness of the repairs carried out by the company.

The customer has requested the court to order replacement of the vehicle or refund of the purchase price along with compensation for financial losses, inconvenience and distress.

The complaint also mentions that the customer contacted the company through official channels and sent a legal notice, but claimed that the issue was not resolved.

The company’s response, according to the complaint documents, acknowledged that a shifter malfunction was reported and that the Shifter Control Module was replaced under warranty after diagnosis.

The legal case has brought attention to consumer rights in Pakistan, especially regarding the responsibilities of automobile companies when a newly purchased vehicle develops serious problems.

The complainant’s lawyer Munir Ahmad Advocate High Court said the purpose of the case is to seek a fair solution for the customer and ensure consumers receive proper protection when purchasing expensive products.

The court will continue hearing the matter after receiving responses from the concerned parties.

Azma Bukhari fires back at Mohsin Naqvi over gover…

Lahore: Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari has strongly responded to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s criticism of Pakistan’s governance system, arguing that he should not condemn the same structure that helped him rise to a senior position. In her reaction, Bukhari said Naqvi had advanced through the existing system and was now calling it a failure despite being one of its beneficiaries. She also claimed that the responsibilities entrusted to him had produced disappointing results, adding that the country’s leadership would decide how to address the matter if it was being raised seriously. Her remarks came after Naqvi, speaking at the Pakistan Economic Summit in Islamabad, described the current governance system as ineffective and incapable of solving the country’s long-standing challenges. The interior minister called for sweeping administrative reforms, including decentralizing authority and creating new administrative units, saying such changes are essential to improve governance and prevent Pakistan from facing the same problems in the years ahead.

Houthis target Saudi Aramco refinery in drone atta…

RIYADH/SANAA: Regional tensions have taken another dangerous turn after Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group claimed it carried out a drone attack on Saudi Aramco’s Jazan refinery, while a separate barrage of missiles and drones reportedly struck the Yemeni Red Sea port city of Mokha. The developments come as security concerns continue to grow across the Red Sea and Gulf, adding another layer to an already volatile regional situation. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the group had targeted the Aramco refinery in Jazan, in southwestern Saudi Arabia, with drones. Saudi authorities confirmed that a fire had broken out at the facility but said it had been brought under control and that no casualties had been reported. Saudi officials did not immediately attribute the fire to the alleged Houthi attack, leaving some details surrounding the incident unclear. The Jazan refinery is a strategically important energy facility on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast. The complex has a crude-processing capacity of around 400,000 barrels per day and produces products including gasoline and ultra-low-sulfur diesel. The latest incident is not the first time Houthi attacks have been reported against Saudi energy infrastructure. The Jazan facility was also reportedly affected by an attack in late July, with parts of its gasification complex and tank farm suffering damage, according to reports. Mokha Port Also Hit The situation became even more serious when Houthi forces reportedly launched missiles and drones toward Mokha, a strategically located port city on Yemen’s western coast. Yemeni government forces and medical sources initially reported at least seven deaths, including civilians and military personnel. Later reports put the death toll at 11, with eight military personnel and three civilians among those killed. Around 32 people were reportedly wounded, although casualty figures varied between sources. Yemeni military officials said air-defence systems intercepted 11 Houthi drones during the attacks. Damage was also reported to civilian and commercial infrastructure around the port. The attacks come against the backdrop of heightened regional tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States. The Houthis have also previously threatened measures affecting shipping in the Red Sea, framing their actions as retaliation for Saudi policies toward Yemen. The latest escalation is particularly notable because Saudi Arabia has recently deepened its defence cooperation with Pakistan and Türkiye. The new security arrangement has been presented as a collective defence framework in which an armed attack against one member is treated as an attack against all. With attacks now reported near both Saudi Arabia’s energy infrastructure and Yemen’s Red Sea coastline, fears are growing that the conflict could further disrupt an already sensitive regional security and trade environment.

Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan to establish new defence cooperation mechanisms

ANKARA: Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are set to establish new political and military coordination mechanisms following the signing of a landmark joint defence agreement, as the three countries move to strengthen strategic cooperation amid growing security concerns in the region. Türkiye’s Defence Ministry said on Thursday that the framework agreed by the three countries would bring senior political and military leadership into a structured mechanism aimed at enhancing coordination on defence and security matters. The three nations signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement on August 7, marking a significant development in their security relations. The agreement comes at a time of heightened tensions across the Middle East, with the escalation of regional hostilities raising security concerns among Gulf states and other countries in the region. Under the agreement, an armed attack against any one of the three countries would be treated as an attack against all members. The provision establishes a collective-defence commitment similar in principle to the collective security arrangement contained in Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). High-level political and military coordination According to the Turkish Defence Ministry, the new mechanisms will involve the defence ministers, foreign ministers and military chiefs of Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. The arrangement is expected to provide the three countries with a regular platform for consultations on regional security developments, defence policy and potential threats. It could also facilitate closer coordination between their armed forces and government institutions. The agreement reflects the growing strategic importance of cooperation between the three Muslim-majority countries, particularly as regional security challenges continue to evolve. Joint military exercises planned The Turkish ministry also said the three countries were planning joint military exercises under the new defence framework. Such exercises could provide opportunities for their armed forces to improve interoperability, exchange operational experience and strengthen their ability to coordinate during potential security crises. Defence cooperation is also expected to extend beyond military exercises. The Turkish side said the agreement could pave the way for greater collaboration in the defence industry, including joint production, technology sharing and other forms of industrial cooperation. The expanded defence-industry partnership could allow the three countries to explore opportunities for developing and producing defence equipment together while sharing technical expertise and capabilities. Agreement follows rising regional tensions The pact was signed against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the Middle East, which have raised concerns over the security of Gulf countries and critical energy infrastructure. The escalation has also highlighted the importance of collective security arrangements and closer coordination among regional powers. For Pakistan, the agreement represents another step towards strengthening defence and strategic ties with Türkiye and Saudi Arabia. Islamabad has traditionally maintained close military and diplomatic relations with both countries. The agreement is therefore expected to broaden cooperation from traditional bilateral defence relations towards a more structured trilateral framework involving political consultations, military coordination and defence-industrial collaboration. Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has also clarified the scope and intent of the Makkah agreement, stressing the nature of the arrangement and its broader security objectives. The three countries are now expected to work out the details of the new mechanisms, including the structure of ministerial consultations, military coordination and proposed joint exercises.

Murkowski opposes Blanche, putting Trump’s AG pick at risk

WASHINGTON: Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska has announced that she will vote against Todd Blanche’s nomination for US attorney general, dealing another setback to President Donald Trump’s choice and leaving his confirmation prospects increasingly uncertain. Murkowski’s decision makes her the second Republican senator to oppose Blanche, following Senator Susan Collins. With the Republican majority in the Senate already facing a narrow margin, even one more GOP defection could put the nomination in serious jeopardy. Murkowski said concerns surrounding an $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund played a major role in her decision. Although the fund was rescinded while Blanche’s nomination was under consideration, she questioned whether it could be restored if Blanche is confirmed. “The country needs an Attorney General who will check the worst impulses of this administration,” Murkowski said, adding that she did not have sufficient confidence that Blanche would fulfil that role. Her opposition adds to a growing political challenge for Blanche, who is seeking Senate approval to lead the Justice Department. The nomination has faced scrutiny over questions surrounding the department’s independence and its handling of politically sensitive matters. The situation is particularly delicate because Republican Senator Mitch McConnell is absent from the Senate. That leaves Blanche with little room for further defections, while attention has turned to Republican Senator Bill Cassidy, who has yet to make his position clear. Murkowski, a longtime Alaska senator known for occasionally breaking with her party, said she had met with Blanche several times and viewed him as capable. However, she ultimately concluded that his nomination raised concerns she could not overlook. Her decision could force Senate Republican leaders to intensify efforts to secure support for Blanche before the chamber’s August recess. For Trump, a failed confirmation would represent a significant political setback in his effort to shape the Justice Department with his preferred leadership. The Senate battle is now expected to remain closely watched as Republicans work to determine whether Blanche can secure enough votes.

Set a daunting target of 203, Colombo Kaps were restricted to 183-9 in their 20 overs. Rubin Hermann was cleaned up by Dilshan Madushanka in the second over before Sadeera Samarawickrama and Ashen Bandara steadied the innings with a 50-run partnership. Bandara made 15. Jaffna Kings struck back with back-to-back wickets to jolt Caps’ progress, leaving them at 97-3. The lower-order kept Caps in the hunt, but with the asking rate soaring, it was an up-and-down affair. For Jaffna Kings, Dilshan Madushanka scalped three wickets. Earlier, after losing Avishka Fernando in the second over, Kamil Mishara and Ibrahim Zadran raised a half-century stand to end the powerplay on a strong note. Mishara hit two sixes and five fours in his 44 from 19 balls. Kings’ scorecard read 68-2 in 7.1 overs when Dunith Wellalage joined Zadran at the crease. The pair added a 61-run partnership for the third wicket. Zadran scored the bulk of the runs while Wellalage contributed only 17. Ibrahim Zadran was run out in the penultimate over after scoring 95 from 65 deliveries, peppered with three sixes and 12 fours. Towhid Hridoy injected late momentum into the innings, scoring a quick-fire 31 not out off just nine balls, including 31 runs off Shahnawaz Dahani’s final over. The right-hander tonked the pacer for three consecutive sixes and another maximum on the final ball to take the total over the 200-run mark. For Colombo Kaps, James Neesham picked up two wickets while Dahani conceded 71 runs in his four overs. The victory strengthens Jaffna Kings’ position in the LPL standings as the tournament progresses.
