AJK election results: PML-N, PPP in close contest

Unofficial and preliminary results from the first phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections have started to emerge, with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) locked in a close contest across several constituencies.

The first phase covered 13 constituencies in Mirpur Division, including the districts of Mirpur, Kotli and Bhimber. Vote counting began after polling ended.

The preliminary results from the constituencies are as follows:

LA-1 Mirpur-I:

Results from 17 of the 139 polling stations have been received. PML-N candidate Azhar Sadiq is leading with 1,692 votes. PPP candidate Muhammad Afsar Shahid is in second place with 1,482 votes.

LA-2 Mirpur-II:

Results from 34 of 149 polling stations have been reported. PPP candidate Qasim Majeed is ahead with 3,103 votes. PML-N’s Azeem Bakhsh Chaudhry has secured 2,409 votes and is in second place.

LA-3 Mirpur-III:

Results from 18 of 161 polling stations show PML-N candidate Chaudhry Muhammad Saeed leading with 2,265 votes. PPP candidate Chaudhry Yasir Sultan is second with 1,470 votes.

LA-4 Mirpur-IV:

Results from only two of 162 polling stations have been received. PML-N candidate Chaudhry Rukhsar Ahmed is leading with 327 votes. PPP candidate Chaudhry Sohaib Arshad has 223 votes.

LA-5 Bhimber-I:

Results from 15 of 176 polling stations show PPP candidate Chaudhry Parvez Ashraf in the lead with 2,310 votes. PML-N candidate Waqar Ahmed Noor is second with 1,767 votes.

LA-6 Bhimber-II:

Results from six of 195 polling stations have been received. Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party candidate Ali Shan Chaudhry is leading with 1,313 votes. PML-N candidate Chaudhry Muhammad Razzaq is second with 585 votes.

LA-7 Bhimber-III:

Results from 27 of 237 polling stations show PML-N candidate Chaudhry Tariq Farooq leading with 5,331 votes. Independent candidate Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq is second with 2,598 votes.

LA-8 Kotli-I:

Results from 10 of 155 polling stations show PPP candidate Zafar Iqbal Malik ahead with 1,221 votes. PML-N candidate Malik Muhammad Nawaz Khan is close behind with 1,174 votes.

LA-9 Kotli-II:

Results from one of 178 polling stations have been received. PML-N candidate Umair Naeem is leading with 534 votes, while PPP candidate Javed Iqbal Budhanvi has 25 votes.

LA-10 Kotli-III:

Results from 12 of 169 polling stations show PML-N candidate Fateh Mahmood-ul-Hassan leading with 1,649 votes. PPP candidate Chaudhry Muhammad Yasin has 1,330 votes.

LA-11 Kotli-IV:

Results from three of 206 polling stations have been received. PPP candidate Chaudhry Muhammad Akhlaq is leading with 489 votes. PML-N candidate Muhammad Asif has 294 votes.

LA-13 Kotli-VI:

Results from 67 of 193 polling stations show PML-N candidate Raja Ayaz Ahmed Khan leading with 10,389 votes. PPP candidate Muhammad Waleed Inqalabi is second with 8,785 votes.

The results remain unofficial and could change as counting continues and results from the remaining polling stations are received.

Claims of disruption in Bhimber

PPP AJK Election Cell in-charge Sardar Abdul Shakoor claimed that disturbances took place at polling stations 119, 120 and 121 in LA-5 Barnala.

He said the disruption affected the polling process. According to Shakoor, voting resumed after security forces reached the area. However, he said polling remained slow afterward.

Raja Pervez Ashraf calls for action

PPP leader Raja Pervez Ashraf expressed concern over alleged irregularities in several constituencies.

He called for additional security personnel at sensitive polling stations, including locations in Gulpur, Thurochi and Muhajir Camp.

Ashraf urged the Election Commission to take immediate and impartial notice of all complaints. He also called for steps to ensure that the elections remain free, transparent and fair.

Police say polling remained peaceful

The spokesperson for the AJK inspector general of police said polling in the first phase across Mirpur Division remained peaceful.

The spokesperson said residents had rejected a call for a long march by a banned committee. Instead, voters chose to exercise their democratic right.

Voters began arriving at polling stations soon after voting opened at 8am.

AJK Inspector General of Police Liaquat Ali Malik thanked residents for cooperating with authorities and helping maintain peace during the electoral process.

He warned that no one, including political workers, would be allowed to take the law into their own hands.

His attention, based on available reports, remains directed toward his upcoming release, ‘King’, rather than commentary on the demonstrations. The protests themselves have drawn considerable attention, pulling in thousands of participants. The gathering followed the larger ‘Chalo Sansad’ march, which appears to have been a catalyst for the broader movement.     Kashmir activist and journalist released on bail after years in custody

Although they have now been granted bail, their freedom remains limited. Court conditions require both Parvez and Mehraj to stay in New Delhi during the legal proceedings. They are not permitted to return to Kashmir and must arrange their own accommodation in the capital while attending court hearings. Indian investigators had challenged the decision to grant bail, but a higher court upheld the order. The Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society has spent many years documenting alleged human rights violations in the region. The move is part of a comprehensive accountability campaign aimed at eliminating corruption, improving transparency, and restoring public confidence in the country’s tax administration. The disciplinary actions, covering the period from August 2024 to mid-2026, represent one of the largest internal crackdowns in the history of the FBR. The institution, responsible for collecting taxes and customs duties, has often faced criticism over allegations of corruption, misuse of authority, and lack of accountability. According to the official data, 211 officers belonging to grades 16 to 21 of the Inland Revenue Service (IRS), the FBR’s domestic tax collection wing, were suspended during the two-year period. Officials noted that previous annual averages for suspensions stood at around 33 cases, highlighting the significant increase in disciplinary measures under the current leadership. The number of major penalties imposed on officers also showed a steady rise. Cases increased from 38 during the 2023-24 fiscal year to 49 in 2024-25, before reaching 75 in 2025-26. Authorities say the increase reflects stricter monitoring and a stronger commitment to enforcing accountability rather than a rise in misconduct alone. In addition to suspensions, the FBR identified 32 officers as being of “questionable integrity” by April 2026. These included 14 officials from the Inland Revenue Service and 18 from Pakistan Customs. Most of the officers held senior positions in grade 20 or above and were removed from operational assignments to ensure greater transparency in tax administration. The accountability drive has coincided with investigations by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), which has arrested several senior tax and customs officials in separate corruption-related cases. These actions have reinforced the government’s broader efforts to strengthen oversight and address misconduct within public institutions. Official figures indicate a significant improvement in integrity levels among officers serving in sensitive positions. In the Inland Revenue Service, the proportion of officers considered to have low integrity dropped from 74 percent in July 2023 to just 11 percent by June 2026. Similarly, in Pakistan Customs, the figure declined from 71 percent to 9 percent over the same period. The FBR has also tightened its promotion process by introducing more rigorous screening measures. The number of officials placed on a performance watch list increased from around 2 percent in 2023 to nearly 40 percent by 2025, reflecting greater emphasis on ethical conduct, financial transparency, and professional performance. Officials say these reforms are part of a long-term institutional strategy rather than isolated disciplinary actions. Regular peer-review mechanisms have achieved completion rates of more than 97 percent, demonstrating improved compliance with internal evaluation procedures. As part of its modernization efforts, the FBR has also introduced a faceless income tax assessment system designed to reduce direct interaction between taxpayers and tax officials, thereby minimizing opportunities for corruption. Additionally, the board has implemented an integrity-based rating system that ranks officers from “A” to “D” based on their ethical standards and professional conduct. By June 2026, officers rated “A” or “B” occupied nearly 90 percent of critical positions in both Inland Revenue and Customs departments. Officials believe these reforms will help improve tax collection, strengthen governance, enhance investor confidence, and support Pakistan’s ongoing fiscal reform agenda.

    Dar vows continued rescue efforts after Broad Peak…

    ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has expressed profound grief over the deaths of 10 mountaineers who lost their lives in the devastating avalanche on Broad Peak in Gilgit-Baltistan. He assured that Pakistan will continue search, rescue and recovery operations until all possible efforts have been exhausted. In his statement, Dar extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and expressed solidarity with the governments and people of Nepal, China, Oman, the United Kingdom and the United States, whose citizens were among those killed in the tragedy. The deputy prime minister paid special tribute to legendary Nepali climber Nirmal Purja, describing him as one of the world’s most accomplished mountaineers. He also honored Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi of Hunza, saying his bravery, determination and passion for the mountains would always be remembered. Dar said the courage and dedication shown by all the climbers reflected the true spirit of mountaineering. He added that their achievements would continue to inspire climbers across the world despite the tragic loss. He also praised the rescue personnel, Pakistan Army Aviation teams, high-altitude porters and emergency responders who have been working in extremely difficult conditions at high altitude. He said the government is maintaining close coordination with the embassies of the affected countries to facilitate the operation and provide all possible assistance. The deadly avalanche struck an international climbing expedition on Broad Peak while the team was moving from Camp 2 to Camp 3. The incident claimed the lives of climbers from Pakistan, Nepal, China, Oman, the United Kingdom and the United States. Among those killed was Nirmal Purja, who gained worldwide recognition after climbing all 14 mountains above 8,000 metres in a record six months and six days in 2019. He had returned to Pakistan in an attempt to become the first mountaineer to summit all 14 eight-thousanders twice without using supplemental oxygen. Rescue teams later recovered Purja’s body from an altitude of approximately 5,700 metres, several days after he and other members of the expedition went missing following the avalanche. The victims also included climbers from Nepal, China, Oman, the United States and Pakistan, making it one of the deadliest mountaineering disasters in the region in recent years.
