LONDON: Senior Pakistani journalists based in the United Kingdom have elected a new leadership for Pakistan Press Club UK International (PPCUK International), pledging to strengthen professional journalism, project Pakistan’s positive image abroad and work closely with the British Pakistani diaspora.

Senior journalist Azhar Javaid, has been elected as Chairman of the organisation, which represents Pakistani journalists working for leading television channels, newspapers and digital media platforms across the UK.

The newly elected office bearers include Haseeb Arsalan (Vice Chairman), Shaukat Dar (President), Irfan ul Haq (Senior Vice President), Nasim Siddiqi (Vice President), Safina Khan (General Secretary), Syed Sibtain Ali (Information Secretary), Amna Chaudhry (Joint Secretary), Zulfiqar Ali (Additional Secretary) and Pervez Iqbal (Finance Secretary).

Senior official and Press Minister at the Pakistan High Commission in London, Ali Nawaz Malik, congratulated the newly elected office bearers and praised UK-based Pakistani journalists for promoting Pakistan’s soft image internationally.

He said Pakistani journalists serving in Britain were ambassadors of Pakistan and had made valuable contributions by highlighting the country’s achievements and keeping the diaspora informed.

Ali Nawaz Malik assured the Pakistan High Commission’s full cooperation in facilitating journalists in the discharge of their professional responsibilities. He said the mission looked forward to working closely with the new leadership of PPCUK International.

Chairman Azhar Javaid said the organisation would uphold the highest standards of journalism, promote professional ethics and strengthen unity among Pakistani journalists in Britain.

He said the club would continue to serve as a credible platform for journalists while highlighting Pakistan’s achievements and promoting the country’s soft image internationally through responsible and balanced reporting.

Vice Chairman Haseeb Arsalan said Pakistan needed a stronger and more positive international image at a crucial time.

“At this moment, Pakistan needs a stronger positive image across the world. Our organisation will work closely with the Pakistani diaspora overseas to promote the country’s achievements and present a balanced and constructive narrative about Pakistan.”

President Shaukat Dar welcomed the unity shown by the media community, saying it was encouraging to see senior and working journalists from different organisations coming together on one platform.

“The strength of this organisation lies in the fact that experienced and working journalists are united under one umbrella for the collective benefit of the profession and the community.”

General Secretary Safina Khan said the newly elected team was committed to serving both Pakistan and the Pakistani community in Britain.

“We will work for Pakistan and act as a bridge between Pakistan, the Pakistani diaspora and media institutions, while promoting professional journalism and positive engagement.”

Founded more than a decade ago, Pakistan Press Club UK International represents Pakistani journalists across the United Kingdom and provides a platform for professional collaboration, networking and advocacy on issues affecting the media fraternity.

Rescue teams divided the search area into four sectors, covering more than four kilometres from the site of the disappearance through Bohar Bazaar Chowk, Colonel Maqbool Chowk, Liaquat Road, Gawalmandi, and extending to Moti Mahal Bridge. Officials searched both open and covered sections of the drainage network. According to Rescue 1122, two specialised water rescue teams, consisting of 12 rescuers and five emergency vehicles, participated in the operation. The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) also assisted in the search. Despite the extensive effort, no trace of the child was found before the operation was temporarily suspended after sunset due to poor visibility. Officials said the search would resume the following morning. Speaking to the media, Hareem’s father said he immediately searched nearby streets and questioned security personnel and relatives after discovering that his daughter was missing. He told police that the street was submerged under approximately one foot of rainwater at the time of the incident, leaving uncertainty over whether the child had been swept away or abducted. Following the unsuccessful search, relatives and local residents staged a protest at Bohar Bazaar Chowk, demanding intensified efforts to recover the missing girl. The demonstration continued for more than an hour before police assured protesters that every available resource would be used to continue both the investigation and the search operation. Waris Khan Police subsequently registered a First Information Report (FIR) under Section 363 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which relates to kidnapping. Authorities say both rescue operations and the criminal investigation remain ongoing as efforts continue to locate the missing child.

    ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Power Awais Leghari has said Pakistan’s solar energy capacity has reached 38,000 megawatts (MW), highlighting the country’s growing shift toward renewable energy and its commitment to reducing dependence on imported fuels. Speaking at the Battery Storage Flexibility 2026 Conference, the minister said the government aims to increase the share of clean energy in Pakistan’s electricity mix to 90% by 2035. He said expanding renewable energy and developing battery storage solutions are key to strengthening the country’s energy security and lowering the import bill for conventional fuels. Leghari said the government is promoting the development of a local battery energy storage industry, encouraging domestic engineering, system integration and battery management software. He added that the Ministry of Industries is finalizing a national policy to support local battery manufacturing. The minister announced that the government is also preparing a National Battery Energy Storage Framework, which will include safety standards, grid connection guidelines and investment regulations to support the growth of the sector. According to Leghari, clean energy now accounts for 55% of Pakistan’s total electricity generation, reflecting significant progress in the country’s transition toward sustainable energy sources. He said a National Steering Committee for Battery Energy Storage Systems has already been established, while technical and regulatory working groups have also been formed to guide policy development and implementation. Leghari further revealed that pilot battery energy storage projects have been approved for electricity distribution companies. The data collected from these projects will help shape future regulatory policies and improve the country’s energy planning. The minister said Pakistan has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing distributed energy markets and assured investors that the government will provide a clear, transparent and long-term regulatory framework to encourage investment.

Among the major gainers were heavyweight stocks such as Attock Refinery Limited (ARL), Mari Energies (MARI), Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDC), Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), Pakistan Oilfields Limited (POL), Pakistan State Oil (PSO), Habib Bank Limited (HBL), MCB Bank, Meezan Bank (MEBL) and United Bank Limited (UBL), all of which traded in positive territory during the early session. Investor confidence also received support from reports that Pakistan has approached China to refinance a $1.3 billion commercial loan. According to reports, the financing is expected to be finalised later this month after both sides complete negotiations on the terms and conditions. Market participants believe the move could help strengthen Pakistan’s external financing position and provide support to the country’s foreign exchange reserves. The strong opening followed a volatile trading session on Tuesday, when the stock market closed significantly lower after investors engaged in widespread profit-taking. Although the KSE-100 Index had reached an intraday high of 178,768.83 points, selling pressure emerged later in the session as traders locked in gains following Monday’s impressive rally. Global financial markets also contributed to the positive sentiment. Asian equities advanced sharply after strong corporate earnings in the United States and continued enthusiasm for technology stocks pushed Wall Street to fresh record highs. Investors were further encouraged by hopes that diplomatic efforts would help keep the Strait of Hormuz open, easing concerns over disruptions to global energy supplies and putting downward pressure on oil prices and bond yields.     A 15-year-old boy was killed after a Mazda truck collided with his motorcycle near Chamra Chowrangi in Karachi’s Korangi area on Wednesday. Police arrested the truck driver shortly after the accident and took the vehicle into custody. Authorities have launched a further investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal collision. The teenager was a resident of Korangi, according to police. After the completion of the necessary legal procedures, his body was handed over to his family. The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety in Karachi, particularly involving heavy vehicles and young motorcyclists. Traffic accidents involving trucks and motorcycles can have devastating consequences because of the significant difference in size and weight between the vehicles. Police are continuing to investigate the case, while further details regarding the circumstances of the collision may emerge as the investigation progresses.
