Human civilisation has always been scared of forgetting

A time ago before the first computer, the first library or even the first book people thought memory was the most important thing for knowledge. Whole societies relied on it. People remembered laws and stories by heart. Passed them down to their children. To remember something was not just to recall facts it was to keep your identity, culture and history alive.

A time ago in ancient Greece people started to worry about memory.

In a book called “Phaedrus” Socrates tells a story about a god named Theuth. Theuth invented writing. Thought it would make people wiser and help them remember more.. The king of Egypt, Thamus did not agree. He said that writing would actually make peoples memories weaker. People would start to rely on written words of trying to remember things themselves. They would think they know something just because they can read it. They would not really understand it.

Course that is not what happened. Writing did not hurt society it changed it. Books became a way to store knowledge and share ideas with people all over the world.

Socrates was worried about something that is still important today.

The question now is not whether we remember things because of books.

It is whether we remember anything all.

Today we have information stored somewhere than ever before. Our phones remember our conversations. Computers store our photos forever. We can find answers to questions in seconds. Machines can summarise books. Help us find information fast.

Never before has much information existed outside of our own minds.

This is a change in how people relate to knowledge.

A man named Marshall McLuhan said that every new technology is like an extension of our abilities. The wheel is like an extension of our feet. The telescope is like an extension of our eyes. By that logic our phones are like an extension of our memories.

They help us remember things.

The problem is obvious.

As we get better at storing information outside of our minds we get worse at remembering things ourselves. We do not remember phone numbers because our phones do. We do not remember birthdays because our computers do. We do not remember how to get places because our phones tell us. We are not trying to remember things much as we used to.

We are just looking them up.

That small change might be one of the most important things that has happened to our minds in the past century.

It is easy to see why we like to store information outside of our minds. Who would want to go to using paper maps or big books to find answers? Digital technology has made it easy for everyone to get information. We can find things out in seconds that used to take days.

The question is not whether this is useful.

It is whether it is changing our minds in some way.

Some psychologists did a study in 2011. Found out something interesting. They found out that when people know they can find information easily they do not try to remember it much. They just remember where to find it.

This is a deal.

Our minds are changing from storing information to finding it.

We are getting better at finding the path. Not the destination.

This is not a habit it is how we think. Remembering things is not about storing facts it is about using them to make decisions to imagine things and to be creative. When we remember things we can connect them in ways and have new ideas.

When we store information outside of our minds that changes.

A man named Nicholas Carr said that digital technology is not just changing how we get information it is changing how we think. The internet is great at giving us answers. It is not so good at helping us really understand things. If we get used to getting answers we might not be as good at thinking deeply about things.

This does not mean that technology is making us less smart.

It means that our intelligence is changing.

The problem is not that we do not know things.

It is that we are too dependent on technology to remember them for us.

A student might think that they can just look up answers and not really learn anything. A professional might rely much on reminders that they do not even try to remember things. Machines are getting better at remembering things for us. That might mean we do not have to try as hard.

Slowly remembering things is becoming more like looking them up.

Knowledge is becoming about getting access to information.

Thinking is becoming more about getting things done.

Technology has definitely helped us store information than ever before.

The question is whether it is also making us less likely to try to remember things ourselves.

Memory is not just about storing information.

It is about how we experience life.

A computer can store every document ever written. A machine can look up every photo ever taken.. They cannot turn experience into wisdom. Our memories are not just storage they are how we interpret things. We forget some things we remember others. We use them to understand ourselves.

A writer named Jorge Luis Borges wrote a story about a man who could remember everything.. This gift was actually a curse. The man could not forget anything so he could not think about things in a way. He was trapped by his memory. Borges was saying that forgetting is not a thing it is actually necessary for thought.

This is not about how we think as individuals.

It is about how we learn and how we understand ourselves as a society.

Education used to be about more than learning facts. It was about learning how to think. If we just store information outside of our minds education might just become about looking things up.

The same thing applies to our society.

Every society relies on shared memories. We keep records, histories and monuments because they help us remember who we are. If we forget our past we do not just lose information we lose perspective.

The digital age has stored information than any other time in history.

It has also made it easy to forget things. Yesterdays news is replaced by todays notifications. History is not just competing with people who want to deny it.

It is competing with distractions.

This is the problem with technology and memory.

We have made machines that can remember perfectly. We might be creating a culture that remembers less deeply.

This is not an argument against technology. Every new technology has changed how we remember things. Digital memory has made it easier for us to learn and access information.

The problem is not with the technology.

It is with how we think about it.

We need to decide whether we will use technology to help our minds or replace them.

Because the biggest danger of technology is not that machines will remember everything.

It is that we will forget that memory is not about storing the past.

It is, about helping us imagine the future.

  • Immature Minds Need Nourishment, Not Punishment

    By Tuba Khan A nation’s commitment to justice is not judged by the way it treats its powerful citizens, but the way it treats its vulnerable members of society. One of the most fragile creations of God are the children who need love and care, but when they are punished for their mistakes, abused or exploited for their mischievous acts and left unheard in their hour of need, they tend to become juvenile delinquents. They require guidance and encouragement to learn from their mistakes, so that they can grow into responsible and confident individuals. But unfortunately, in Pakistan, children are the most neglected group in terms of justice. Though Pakistan has juvenile justice laws and is a signatory to several international commitments. However, it fails to honor these obligations. According to the KidsRights Index 2020, Pakistan ranks 147th out of 182 nations in access to justice for children. Juvenile delinquency is not inherent; rather, it is often fueled by social, familial, psychological and environmental conditions. Children being observant and curious by nature are highly adaptable to their surroundings. Family, mentors and the community instill values in a child, shaping children’s behavior. However, factors that lead to juvenile delinquency include parental conflicts or separation, peer pressure, exposure to negative, aggressive and violent environments, deprivation of education, financial resources, affection and other basic necessities, impaired cognitive development, poor reasoning skills and psychological issues, such as impulsiveness, antisocial traits and mental disorders. Moreover, drug addiction, access to harmful content on social media, the dark web and illegal means also exacerbate the growing evil of youth delinquency. Together, these factors shape a child’s social and moral development and provoke delinquent behavior. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) defines a child as one under the age of eighteen. Below this age, children should not be treated with brutality or strict laws. Critics often argue that crime is crime whether it is committed by a child or an adult. However, the philosophy of juvenile justice acknowledges that cognitive development is not yet mature and children have an immense capacity for rehabilitation. A study indicates that the children between 16 and 18 years of age are more likely to commit offences as compared to the younger ones There is always hope for and from every child. Recognizing these realities, the global community embraced a child-centered approach to juvenile justice and adopted basic principles to deal with young offenders. First, it must be made clear that when a child comes into conflict with the law, alternatives should be offered instead of processing him/her through the formal justice system. Second, there needs to be an exclusive juvenile justice system. Third, during the investigation, a juvenile should not be kept in a regular police station and the judicial process needs to be quick. Lastly, it must be ensured that the state gives a message to juveniles that it believes in their potential for reform. International laws promote the reintegration of children into society, but sadly, this approach is missing in the juvenile justice system of Pakistan. Punjab has only two Borstal Institutes & Juvenile Jails at Bahawalpur and Faisalabad, while Sindh has five Youthful Offenders Industrial Schools in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana and Dadu, although the facility in Dadu is non-operational. The KPK has one Borstal in Bannu, whereas Balochistan does not have even a single functional Borstal Institute or juvenile jail. This lack of physical infrastructure causes a considerable number of juveniles to be imprisoned in regular prisons. Placing children in such an overcrowded environment exposes them in proximity to criminals and causes psychological distress, which undermines the rehabilitation capacity of prisoners. No less troubling is the lack of juvenile courts across the country. As a result, most children have continued to go through regular courts that cannot cater to their developmental needs. A joint report by UNICEF and the Commissioner for Children’s Complaint Office of Pakistan has found that as of November 2023, 81% of the total juvenile offenders in Punjab were detained in ordinary jails, and only 144 prisoners were housed in Borstal Institutes. In January 2026, Punjab Prison Department released a report, according to which there are 718 juvenile prisoners in Punjab, while the total capacity is 658 prisoners. The shortage of juvenile institutions further highlights the flaws in the juvenile justice system of Pakistan. It is the state’s responsibility to transform vulnerable children into responsible citizens. Therefore, the Government of Pakistan must move beyond merely passing laws that remain largely unimplemented and instead take concrete and pragmatic steps. The country should develop an implementation plan for the juvenile justice system, allocate adequate financial resources, strengthen the diversion mechanism to resolve minor juvenile cases outside the formal justice system, establish child-friendly rehabilitation centers that promote a sense of responsibility towards society, develop specialized juvenile police units to replace the use of police lock-ups for children, protect juveniles from torture and capital punishment while in detention, recruit trained staff, address the root causes of juvenile delinquency, such as poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, unsafe neighborhoods and the growing number of street children through social welfare programs and introduce a real-time Prison Management Information System (PMIS) to monitor juvenile offenders and support evidence-based decision-making. Every child lost to crime symbolizes not merely an individual failure but a social breakdown and failure of state governance. Invest in the rehabilitation of juvenile offenders to build a safer and stable Pakistan tomorrow. Immature minds need nourishment, not punishment.

    Climate crisis

    The climate crisis is one of the greatest challenges facing the world today. Rising temperatures, heatwaves, floods droughts, and unpredictable weather are affecting millions of people. Pakistan is among the countries most vulnerable to climate change, yet many communities still lack the resources to cope with its effects. The government should take stronger steps to protect the environment by planting more trees, reducing pollution, promoting clean energy and improving disaster preparedness. At the same time, citizens must also play their part by saving water avoiding waste and keeping their surroundings clean. The climate crisis is no longer a problem of the future it is happening now. Urgent action from both the government and the public is essential to protect our environment and ensure a safer future for the next generation

    World’s tallest bridge features 300-meter artificial waterfall

    China has completed several remarkable engineering projects in recent years but the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge stands out as one of the most extraordinary. Often described as an engineering marvel, the bridge is not for the faint-hearted. Anyone with a fear of heights may find crossing it a nerve-racking experience. The bridge is situated 625 meters (2,051 feet) above the ground and was opened to the public in September 2025 making it the world’s tallest bridge. However, its height is not the only feature that makes it unique. The bridge also includes a spectacular artificial waterfall making it a major tourist attraction rather than just a transportation route. Chinese authorities designed the bridge as both an infrastructure project and a tourist destination. Visitors can enjoy glass walkways, cafes inside the bridge towers and adventure activities such as bungee jumping. The bridge’s most eye-catching attraction is its 300-meter-long artificial waterfall which creates a dramatic curtain of water. A laser lighting system has also been installed allowing the waterfall to put on a dazzling display at night. According to local authorities, thousands of tourists visit the site every day. The bridge gained further recognition when Time magazine ranked it as the No. 1 destination in its list of the World’s Greatest Places for 2026. Located in Guizhou Province in southwestern China, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge was primarily built to reduce travel time across the mountainous region. Guizhou’s rugged terrain previously made travel between many locations slow and difficult. Thanks to the new bridge, a journey that once took two hours can now be completed in about one minute. Constructed from 20,000 tons of steel roughly equivalent to the amount used in three Eiffel Towers, the bridge stretches 9,482 feet (about 2,890 meters) in length. Construction began in January 2022 and the bridge officially opened to the public in September 2025.

    Pakistani folklore

    Pakistani folklore is a vibrant web regional oral traditions, Sufi mystical allegories, and tribal epics across Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the northern mountain valleys. Punjab: Sufi Metaphors & Tragic Romances Punjabi folklore is dominated by tragic love stories (Kissa) that doubled as spiritual allegories for divine love (Ishq-e-Haqiqi). Heer Ranjha is immortalized by the poet Waris Shah. This narrative details the doomed union between Heer, a noblewoman, and Ranjha, an outcast flute player turned jogi. In case of Sohni Mahiwal, Sohni crosses the volatile Chenab River nightly using an baked earthenware pot (gharra) to meet her lover Mahiwal. One night, her sister-in-law replaces the vessel with unbaked clay. This  dissolves mid-stream, leading to Sohni’s tragic drowning. Mirza Sahiban is tale of romance, familial duty, and betrayal. The story culminated in Sahiban breaking Mirza’s arrows to protect her brothers. This act leads to Mirza’s demise. Sindh: The Seven Queens (Satt Surmyun) Sindhi lore centers around seven heroic women celebrated in Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai’s monumental Sufi compendium, the Shah Jo Risalo. Sassi (Sassi Punhun) searches the Makran desert for her abducted lover, Punhun, until the earth swallows her. Marui (Umar Marui) was abducted by King Umar. She refuses wealth and palace luxuries to remain faithful to her desert village. Moomal (Moomal Rano) operates the enchanted palace of Kak Mahal, tests suitors with magical illusions, and loses Rano to misunderstanding. Balochistan: Tribal Epics & Renunciation Baloch folklore prioritizes chivalry, tribal honor, and ascetic devotion. Hani and Sheh Mureed: The legendary hero Mureed sacrifices his marriage to Hani due to a bound oath given to Mir Chakar Rind. Mureed becomes a wandering dervish, becoming an archetype of ultimate devotion. Lulla and Granaz: Tales celebrating battlefield bravery, hospitality, and tribal allegiance. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa & Northern Valleys: Pashtun & Mountain Legends Adam Khan and Durkhanai: A Pashto romance where music plays a central role. Adam Khan’s soulful mastery of the Rabab brings the lovers together against social friction. Prince Saiful Muluk & Badri-ul-Jamal: Set in the high-altitude Kaghan Valley, a Persian prince falls in love with a fairy princess at Lake Saiful Muluk, giving the actual alpine lake its legendary name.

  • Survey finds divide over AI

    A new report from the Pew Research Center shows that artificial intelligence (AI) experts and the general public have very different opinions about the future of AI. While experts are mostly positive about its impact many people are worried that AI could replace jobs and create new challenges. According to the survey, 56% of AI experts believe the technology will have a positive effect on the United States over the next 20 years. In comparison, only 17% of the public share that view. Experts are more confident that AI will improve the way people work and help grow the economy. However many people are concerned that AI could reduce job opportunities especially in roles that depend on human workers. The report also highlights the jobs experts believe are most likely to be affected by AI. About 73% think cashier jobs could be replaced followed by truck drivers (62%) journalists (60%) factory workers (60%) and software engineers (50%). The public generally agrees with these predictions although only 33% believe truck drivers are at high risk. Both experts and the public agree that healthcare is one of the areas where AI can bring the greatest benefits. They believe AI could improve medical care and support better treatment. At the same time both groups are concerned that AI may not improve the accuracy of news or election coverage. The survey also found strong support for greater control over AI. Many respondents believe governments may struggle to regulate the technology effectively as it continues to develop. Another finding is the difference between male and female AI experts. Around 63% of male experts expect AI to have a positive impact on the United States compared with 36% of female experts. Women were generally more cautious saying the technology could have both benefits and risks. The report also notes that women remain underrepresented in the AI industry. Researchers suggest that increasing women’s participation in AI development could lead to more balanced technologies. They also point out that many jobs with a large number of female workers such as administrative and customer service roles are becoming more automated increasing the risk of job losses. Overall the report shows that understanding both expert opinions and public concerns is important. As AI continues to grow balancing its benefits with responsible rules and safeguards will be essential.
