How baby shark built pinkfong’s empire

When South Korean company SmartStudy uploaded a simple 90-second children’s song to YouTube in June 2016, few people could have imagined that it would become a worldwide sensation.

The company now known as The Pinkfong Company, created the “Baby Shark” video which later became the most-watched video in YouTube history.

It has now crossed more than 16 billion views.

The company recently made another big move as its shares began trading on the Korea Exchange.  The stock rose by more than 9% at the start of trading. At the listing ceremony, CEO Kim Min-seok celebrated by playing a traditional drum while the company’s Baby Shark mascot stood beside him.

SmartStudy was founded in 2010 with only three employees. According to Kim the first office was so small that the company struggled financially during its early months.

It later focused on creating simple, educational and interactive content for children. That was when the idea for Baby Shark began to take shape.

In 2022, the company changed its name to The Pinkfong Company inspired by its popular cartoon character, Pinkfong Fox.  Today it has more than 340 employees and offices in cities including Los Angeles, Tokyo and Shanghai.

The Baby Shark melody was inspired by an old American camp song from the 1970s. Pinkfong gave it a faster beat simple lyrics and easy dance moves that children could quickly learn.

The song did not become an instant hit.  However after its dance moves appeared in children’s programs across Southeast Asia social media users began sharing their own videos. The trend quickly spread around the world.

Baby Shark soon became a major source of income for the company.  Toys animated shows licensing deals and live performances helped turn the song into a much bigger entertainment brand.

The company also faced a copyright dispute in 2019 when an American composer accused it of copying his melody. Pinkfong argued that the song was based on a traditional folk tune. South Korea’s Supreme Court eventually ruled in the company’s favor removing a major legal concern ahead of its public listing.

Today Baby Shark still contributes around 25% of the company’s revenue.  However Pinkfong’s newer franchise, Bebefinn, has grown even faster and now accounts for more than 40% of revenue. The company says it is working on new characters films and digital content to reduce its dependence on one hit song.  It also plans to explore artificial intelligence and use audience data to create content that better matches children’s interests.

Many parents praise Pinkfong for making educational content fun and engaging while others feel some of its songs are too energetic. Still Baby Shark remains a familiar part of children’s birthday parties school events and family entertainment around the world.

Google is preparing to introduce new devices at its hardware event on August 12. According to the leaked information, the Pixel 11 Pro XL is expected to receive significant upgrades in several areas, including the camera, artificial intelligence, processor and connectivity. The leaks have attracted considerable attention from technology enthusiasts. Google is reportedly planning major improvements to the phone’s design, camera, performance and AI capabilities. According to the leaked details, the phone’s camera bar has been redesigned and will reportedly include an LED notification ring. Early leaks referred to this feature as “Pixel Glow” but recent reports suggest its possible official name could be “Highlight.” Available in five colours The Pixel 11 Pro XL is reportedly expected to be available in five colours: green, light green, silver, midnight and red. The phone is expected to feature a 6.8-inch LTPO OLED display with support for a 120Hz refresh rate. Reports also suggest that it will have a 13-megapixel ultra-wide selfie camera on the front. The design is also expected to receive some changes. The Pixel 11 Pro XL may feature a durable aluminum frame and Gorilla Glass Victus 3 which could provide greater protection against scratches and accidental drops. Major camera improvements The Pixel 11 Pro XL is expected to have a triple rear-camera setup. According to the leaks, it may include a 50-megapixel main camera, a 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera and a 48-megapixel periscope telephoto camera. The telephoto camera is reportedly expected to provide 5x optical zoom. The phone may also feature a 120x Pro Zoom option in its software, designed to capture distant objects and scenes with greater detail. With the help of Google’s Gemini AI technology, the camera could offer improved low-light photography, scene recognition and real-time image processing. A new mode called “Motion Capture” is also reportedly being developed. It could use AI to track moving people or objects and maintain focus on them. Improved performance with Tensor G6 The phone is also expected to feature Google’s new Tensor G6 processor which could provide improved performance for multitasking, gaming, video editing and AI-powered applications. The Tensor G6 is expected to offer enhanced capabilities for on-device machine learning, real-time language translation and intelligent text suggestions. The leaked reports also claim improvements in battery performance. The phone could feature an adaptive power-management system that adjusts energy consumption according to usage patterns to help extend battery life. Range of AI features The Pixel 11 Pro XL is expected to include several new AI-powered features. These may include an Animal Rescue feature designed to help identify and locate lost pets. Other expected features include advanced voice recognition, personalized app suggestions based on user habits, improved security, on-device encryption and real-time threat detection. A new Focus Mode could allow users to temporarily silence unnecessary notifications so they can concentrate on important tasks. Reports have also mentioned improved speakers, spatial audio and potentially advanced augmented reality (AR) features. Although most of the information currently available about the Pixel 11 Pro XL is based on leaks and speculation, it suggests that Google is focusing heavily on AI technology alongside hardware improvements in its new flagship smartphone. Google is expected to officially announce the phone’s final specifications and price at its launch. Until then, the reported details should be considered leaks and speculation rather than confirmed information.

Unemployment is a serious problem, especially among educated young people. Many students complete their education but cannot find suitable jobs. Due to unemployment, people face poverty, frustration, and many social problems. It also slows down the progress of the country. The government should create more job opportunities and encourage industries and small businesses. Technical and vocational education should also be promoted so that young people can learn useful skills and earn a living. I hope the concerned authorities will take immediate steps to control unemployment and provide better opportunities for our youth.

  • Kimchi may help remove microplastics

    Scientists are studying whether kimchi a popular Korean fermented food could help the body remove harmful microplastics. Early research suggests that certain beneficial bacteria found in kimchi may attach to tiny plastic particles during digestion making it easier for the body to remove them through waste. Microplastics are extremely small pieces of plastic that have already been found in human blood lungs and even the placenta. People can take them in through food drinking water and the air they breathe raising concerns about their possible health effects. In the study researchers examined a type of lactic acid bacteria taken from kimchi. They tested it in mice and found that animals given the probiotic passed nearly twice as many microplastic particles in their waste compared with those that did not receive it. Laboratory tests also showed that the bacteria attached to about 57% of the microplastic particles suggesting it may help remove them from the body. However researchers stressed that these findings are still preliminary.  The study does not prove that eating regular kimchi will have the same effect in humans. More clinical studies are needed before scientists can confirm whether kimchi or its beneficial bacteria can help reduce microplastics in the human body.

  • Urgent Need for a Hospital and Ambulance Service in Shapuk, District Kech

    By Asma Qayyum I would like to draw the attention of the health authorities and the Government of Balochistan to the severe healthcare crisis faced by the residents of Shapuk, a rural village in District Kech. At present, Shapuk has no healthcare infrastructure. There is no hospital, Basic Health Unit (BHU), clinic or even a single doctor available to serve the local population. For even minor illnesses routine check-ups  or medical consultations, residents are forced to travel nearly 34 kilometers to Turbat. This not only causes inconvenience but also places an unnecessary financial burden on families. The situation becomes even more alarming during medical emergencies. Shapuk has no ambulance service leaving critically ill patients without immediate medical assistance.   In cases of childbirth complications serious accidents heart attacks or other life threatening conditions patients must wait for expensive private transport. Many lives are put at risk or even lost during the long and painful journey to Turbat.   Pregnant women in particular face immense danger when timely medical care is unavailable. Access to basic healthcare is a fundamental human right yet the people of Shapuk remain deprived of this essential service. According to regional healthcare assessments by the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund and district development profiles Kech has long suffered from a shortage of healthcare facilities and medical professionals. It is encouraging that the Balochistan Government’s Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) has allocated funds for infrastructure projects such as the Construction of the Shapuk External Road. However while roads are being developed healthcare remains neglected. Roads alone cannot save lives if there are no nearby medical facilities to serve the people. I respectfully urge the Balochistan Health Department the Deputy Commissioner of Kech, and the elected representatives of the area to take immediate action.   The government should establish at least a fully equipped Basic Health Unit (BHU) in Shapuk appoint qualified doctors and medical staff provide essential medicines and station an emergency ambulance to ensure timely medical care for residents. Healthcare is not a privilege it is a basic right. The people of Shapuk deserve access to safe timely and quality medical services. Immediate action today can save countless lives tomorrow.

  • Beyond Caravaggio’s shadow lies Gentileschi’s masterpiece

    In the history of European art, few paintings contain the impact of Artemisia Gentileschi’s Judith Slaying Holofernes (1612–1613), housed in the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples. This masterpiece was painted when Gentileschi was only in her late teens. The canvas captures the climatic biblical moment of the Israelite heroine Judith, assisted by her maidservant Abra, beheads the invading Assyrian general Holofernes. Later, the decapitated head was delivered to her besieged city of Bethulia. Baroque art frequently revisited the deuterocanonical story of Judith. Gentileschi’s depiction shattered the established artistic conventions of her era. Her canvas showed a powerful portrayal of female agency, solidarity, and uncompromising physical force. In earlier Renaissance and Baroque interpretations of the story, Judith was often rendered as hesitant, emotionally detached, or visibly repulsed by the act of violence. Maidservants were typically portrayed as passive observers or elderly bystanders waiting in the background. Gentileschi discarded this detached framing. And transformed the scene into a collaborative and grueling physical struggle. Abra is not merely a witness; she actively pins down Holofernes’ arms, applying her body weight to suppress his desperate struggles. Judith holds the general firmly by his hair. Her muscles taut and face composed in resolute determination as she drives the sword through his neck. The composition relies heavily on contrasting, thrusting arms that radiate outward from the central act of decapitation, pinning the viewer’s gaze directly onto the fatal fate.  Traditional/Male Views: Judith hesitant, maid as onlooker. Gentileschi’s Vision: Physical force, sisterly ccollaboration. Gentileschi created this initial version in Rome. It was shortly after enduring a highly public and harrowing trial against painter Agostino Tassi, who had raped her in 1611. During the proceedings, Artemisia was subjected to physical torture to verify her testimony. “Early feminist art historians have frequently read the canvas as a powerful statement of visual retribution and catharsis, pointing out that Gentileschi painted Judith with her own facial features while bestowing Tassi’s likeness upon Holofernes.” Stylistically, the work demonstrates Artemisia’s absorption of Caravaggio’s tenebrism. The dramatic contrast between theatrical light and suffocating shadows. However, unlike Caravaggio’s dark theatricality, Artemisia’s focus remains emotional and human. Gentileschi returned to this subject around 1620, producing a second famous version currently preserved at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. The later Uffizi iteration features richer textiles, refined anatomical precision, and spurting arterial blood. However, the original Naples canvas retains a distinct emotional raw power. Naples Version (1612–13): Raw immediacy, dark emotional weight. Uffizi Version (1620): Refined detail, spurting blood. Today, major international retrospective exhibitions such as showcases at Paris’s Musée Jacquemart-André and special loans across European institutions continue to highlight Artemisia Gentileschi’s triumphs. She became the first woman admitted to Florence’s prestigious Accademia delle Arti del Disegno. She proved that her mastery went far beyond novelty.  

  • Study links fructose to Cancer spread

    A new scientific study has found that fructose a simple type of sugar may help cancer cells that survive chemotherapy send signals that encourage the disease to spread. Researchers at the Wistar Institute in the United States explained that some cancer cells are not completely destroyed by chemotherapy. These surviving cells stop dividing but remain active. They continue to send chemical signals to nearby cancer cells which may influence how the disease behaves. The study published in the journal Nature Aging suggests that fructose could be one of the substances involved in this signaling process. According to the researchers it may help surviving cancer cells stay active and communicate with other cancer cells. Co-author Aidan Cole said this is one of the first studies to show that a nutrient found in food such as fructose may act as a signaling molecule between cancer cells. Experts say the findings could improve understanding of how cancer returns or spreads after chemotherapy and may help guide future treatments. However they stressed that more research is needed. The study does not prove that eating fructose directly causes cancer to grow or spread.
