Washington wildfires scorch 250,000 acres

The US state of Washington is facing one of its most severe wildfire emergencies of the year as rapidly spreading fires continue to burn across vast areas, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate and leaving tens of thousands without electricity.

State authorities have declared a state of emergency after wildfires scorched more than 250,000 acres of land. Officials said the total area burned since the beginning of the current wildfire season has now exceeded 450,000 acres, highlighting the scale of the crisis.

Governor Bob Ferguson announced emergency measures and imposed a statewide burn ban. He said extremely high temperatures, dry conditions and strong winds have created dangerous conditions that are allowing the fires to spread quickly.

Firefighters are battling more than a dozen active wildfires across the state. More than 4,000 emergency personnel have been deployed to contain the blazes and protect communities under threat.

The Old Trails Fire has become one of the most destructive wildfires in eastern Washington. The fire is threatening thousands of homes and buildings, particularly around the city of Spokane. Authorities have ordered mandatory evacuations in several areas as flames continue to move toward residential communities.

Emergency officials have also evacuated important public facilities as a precaution. These include a Department of Veterans Affairs hospital, a waste-to-energy plant and water treatment facilities. Authorities said the measures were taken to protect patients, staff and essential infrastructure.

The wildfire emergency has also disrupted electricity services across eastern Washington. Utility provider Avista reported that around 60,000 customers remain without power because of fire damage and precautionary shutdowns designed to reduce additional risks.

One of the largest active blazes is the Kaiser Canyon Fire in northeastern Washington. The wildfire has expanded to nearly 134,000 acres and continues to challenge firefighters because of difficult terrain and rapidly changing weather conditions.

Fire crews from more than a dozen US states have joined local emergency responders to strengthen firefighting operations. National Guard personnel have also been mobilised to assist with evacuation efforts, logistics and emergency response.

Authorities are using helicopters, aircraft, bulldozers and other heavy equipment to slow the spread of the fires and establish containment lines. Emergency teams are working around the clock to protect homes, businesses and critical infrastructure.

Residents in affected communities have been urged to follow evacuation orders without delay and remain informed through official emergency updates. Officials warned that weather conditions could continue to fuel the fires in the coming days.

Despite the widespread destruction and the large-scale emergency response, authorities have confirmed that no deaths or injuries have been reported so far. Firefighters continue working to bring the blazes under control while monitoring the risk of new fires across the state.

Kelly Clarkson reveals why she regrets her post-Am…

Kelly Clarkson has never been shy about sharing her true feelings about From Justin to Kelly, the 2003 musical comedy she made shortly after winning the first season of American Idol. Now, the singer has once again made it clear that the movie is not a chapter of her career she wants her children to revisit. During her final Las Vegas concert, Clarkson joked about the movie while speaking to the audience. She sarcastically called it an “Oscar-worthy” production before revealing the real reason she agreed to star in it: she was contractually obligated. Clarkson also joked that she wished she had read the fine print more carefully before signing her American Idol contract. (Page Six) The movie paired Clarkson with Justin Guarini, the runner-up from the first season of American Idol. Their characters meet during spring break and become romantically involved in the musical comedy. Released in 2003, the film arrived when American Idol was becoming a huge television phenomenon. However, Clarkson has previously explained that she did not want to make the movie in the first place. In a 2019 interview, she recalled being extremely unhappy about the project and said she had even spoken to lawyers in an attempt to escape her contractual obligation. She described the experience as one of the most miserable periods of her life. (Vanity Fair) Her concerns were not completely unfounded. From Justin to Kelly received harsh reviews and performed poorly at the box office. The movie reportedly earned around $4.9 million domestically against a budget of about $12 million. Its reputation has remained largely negative over the years. (Wikipedia) Despite her criticism, Clarkson does not believe the entire experience was a waste. During her recent concert, she pointed out that the music was actually fun to make. Her ability to laugh about the experience now shows how much distance she has gained from that early chapter of her career. Clarkson was only beginning her professional journey when she made the movie. Winning American Idol had suddenly placed her in the spotlight, and she was quickly expected to take on opportunities that came with her new fame. More than 20 years later, Clarkson can look back with a much stronger voice and greater control over her career. While From Justin to Kelly may remain a movie she would rather her children skip, she has managed to turn an uncomfortable experience into one of her most amusing career stories.

Ed Sheeran has given fans a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of KATSEYE’s latest single, “Animal,” revealing how the collaboration began and the inspiration behind the song and its music video. The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter recently shared a studio recording in which he explained that the project started after he heard KATSEYE’s breakout hit, “Gnarly,” while traveling in Mexico. Impressed by the group’s sound and energy, Sheeran said he became an instant fan and reached out with the hope of writing a song for them. The studio clip shows Sheeran performing the chorus before the members recorded their vocals, offering a glimpse into the songwriting process. He explained that “Animal” is about the side of a person that only close friends or loved ones truly get to see. According to Sheeran, everyone has a bold, carefree version of themselves that comes alive when they feel completely comfortable, and the song encourages listeners to embrace that hidden confidence. That message is reflected throughout the official music video, which blends polished visuals with high-energy choreography. The members transition between refined, glamorous looks and more fearless performances, representing the contrast between the image people present to the world and the uninhibited version of themselves. The visual concept reinforces the song’s themes of confidence, freedom and self-expression. The music video also features a special cameo from actress Demi Moore, who helps introduce the story before the group fully embraces their “animal” personas. Her appearance adds a dramatic element to the narrative, leading into the video’s vibrant dance sequences and striking visuals. Sheeran’s collaboration with KATSEYE highlights his admiration for the rising global group. Rather than being approached to write the track, he revealed that his interest stemmed from genuinely enjoying their music and wanting to contribute to their next chapter. By combining Sheeran’s songwriting with KATSEYE’s powerful vocals and performance style, “Animal” showcases the group’s evolving artistry while giving fans a rare look at the creative journey that transformed an idea in the studio into one of their latest releases. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DbV6A–iZhj/?igsh=azZ0cTB2ZGlvdGIx

Cameroonian President Paul Biya reshuffles military leadership amidst prolonged absence in Switzerland

Cameroon’s 93-year-old President, Paul Biya, the world’s oldest sitting head of state, has enacted a strategic reshuffle of the country’s military leadership from abroad, issuing decrees to promote senior officers and appoint new commanders while remaining in Geneva, Switzerland. Among the key appointments, Biya promoted five colonels to the rank of brigadier general. Notably, Brigadier General Raymond Jean Charles Beko’o Abondo was reappointed to lead the elite Presidential Guard, an essential security unit responsible for the president’s personal protection that he has commanded since 2013. The administrative shifts coincide with growing domestic anxiety regarding Biya’s absence from Cameroon, which has extended to nearly two months following his departure on 7 June for what officials termed a “brief private stay”. Opponents and civil society groups have voiced concern over an institutional vacuum, noting that a newly created vice-presidential seat remains vacant and a promised cabinet overhaul has yet to materialise. Government representatives, including Communication Minister René Emmanuel Sadi, dismissed claims of administrative paralysis or health crises, maintaining that the president remains fully operational and continues to sign official decrees and financial agreements from abroad.

Cher ordered to pay over $1 million in legal fees

Cher has been ordered to bear more than $1 million in her own legal expenses despite previously winning a long-running legal battle over music royalties linked to her former husband and musical partner, Sonny Bono. The legal dispute began in October 2021 when the legendary singer and actress filed a lawsuit against Sonny Bono’s widow, Mary Bono. Cher sought to protect her right to receive royalties from songs recorded during the successful Sonny & Cher partnership and claimed she was entitled to damages after her royalty payments were challenged. According to the lawsuit, Cher argued that her 1978 divorce settlement with Sonny Bono guaranteed her a 50% share of the royalties generated by their music catalogue. She alleged that Mary Bono had attempted to terminate those royalty rights under U.S. copyright law, depriving her of income she was legally entitled to receive. The dispute centred on whether Cher’s contractual rights established through the divorce agreement could continue despite copyright termination provisions. Cher maintained that the divorce settlement remained valid and enforceable, while Mary Bono challenged those claims. In May 2024, the court ruled in Cher’s favour on the central issue. The judge found that she was entitled to unpaid royalty payments and awarded her more than $418,000 in damages for royalties that had been withheld. Following that victory, Cher sought to recover the legal costs she had accumulated while pursuing the case. In January 2026, she filed a request asking the court to award her $1,023,605.30 in attorney’s fees. Her legal team argued that the case involved a common set of facts across multiple claims and counterclaims, making it unnecessary to separate the legal costs for each issue individually. They also contended that any work related to Mary Bono’s partially successful counterclaim represented only a minimal portion of the overall litigation. However, the judge rejected Cher’s request for attorney’s fees in a ruling issued on July 17. The court concluded that the case was fundamentally a contract dispute rather than one arising under federal copyright law. Because of that distinction, the judge determined that Cher was not entitled to recover her legal expenses from the opposing side. As a result of the ruling, Cher will have to cover more than $1 million in attorney’s fees herself, despite winning the underlying royalties dispute. Court filings also indicated that approximately $10,000 in additional legal costs was expected to be incurred for her representation. The case marks the latest chapter in a years-long legal battle involving the financial legacy of Sonny & Cher, one of the most influential entertainment duos of the 1960s and 1970s. Cher and Sonny Bono rose to international fame with a string of hit songs before expanding into television with The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, which became one of the era’s most popular variety shows. Following their divorce and the end of their professional partnership, both continued with separate careers. Sonny Bono later entered politics, serving as mayor of Palm Springs before being elected to the U.S. Congress, where he remained until his death in 1998.
