Ariana Grande’s Petal video sparks fresh health concerns

Ariana Grande has once again become the centre of online discussion after the release of her new music video for Petal, with fans expressing renewed concern over the singer’s noticeably slim appearance. While many praised the video’s creative direction, others said they were worried about Grande’s health, reigniting a debate that has followed the pop star for several years.
In one of the video’s opening scenes, Grande appears at an audition wearing a Grease-inspired outfit consisting of black leggings, an off-the-shoulder black top, a matching neck scarf, vintage-style sunglasses, pearl earrings, black heels and a leather jacket draped over her shoulder. Her signature ponytail was styled into tight curls as she joined a group of aspiring actresses in a choreographed waiting-room dance sequence.
Soon after the video’s release, social media platforms were flooded with reactions. Many fans admired the song and visuals but admitted they were distracted by Grande’s appearance.
One fan wrote:
“She is extremely thin and it’s concerning.”
Another commented:
“I think people are allowed to be concerned for her health.”
A third person remarked:
“Bones are literally popping out.”
Another fan wrote:
“As an Ari fan, the song and video are absolutely incredible concepts and incredibly executed but honestly all I can think about is how I hope she’s okay because she literally looks ill. She needs to get help.”
However, many others rushed to Grande’s defence, arguing that constant public discussion about her body amounts to body-shaming rather than genuine concern.
One supporter wrote:
“If y’all actually cared about her you wouldn’t be publicly making comments about her body.”
Another added:
“Leave her body alone. Ariana doesn’t exist for your commentary. She’s out here meeting fans, dropping Petal, and living her life. Her weight is not a public discussion. Body-shaming a woman for being thin is still body-shaming.”
A third fan posted:
“CLOCK THEM, ARIANA GRANDE. THEY BETTER STOP COMMENTING ON HER BODY, HER WEIGHT, OR HER LOOKS. It’s weird, it’s unnecessary, and she doesn’t owe anyone an explanation for how she looks.”
The renewed discussion echoes comments Grande herself made in 2024 when she spoke about the pressure women face over their appearance. During an interview, the singer admitted that public scrutiny can be painful.
“I think that it’s something that is uncomfortable no matter what scale you’re experiencing it on.”
She also described comments about a person’s weight as:
“Uncomfortable” and “horrible.”
Grande further explained that society has become far too comfortable commenting on other people’s appearance, saying:
“There’s a comfortability that people have commenting on that that I think is really dangerous.”
Despite the ongoing debate, Petal has been warmly received for its music and visual storytelling, with many fans urging others to focus on Grande’s artistry rather than her physical appearance. The latest conversation once again highlights the growing discussion around celebrity privacy, body image and the impact of online commentary on public figures.

Pakistan set to begin $2.5bn ML-1 Railway upgrade …

LAHORE: Pakistan Railways is moving ahead with preparations for the first phase of the $2.5 billion Main Line-1 (ML-1) project, with civil works expected to begin in January 2027 under the government’s accelerated implementation plan. The first phase will focus on the 480-kilometre Karachi-Rohri railway corridor, where new tracks will be constructed alongside safety fencing to prevent unauthorised access. The project is expected to take around two-and-a-half to three years to complete. Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi said the department was making every effort to meet the January deadline set by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He noted that consultations with contractors and consultants, international tendering, bidding, shortlisting and contract awards could take four to five months, but the government was determined to keep the project on schedule. Pakistan Railways has scheduled an online market engagement session for September 8 with local and international contractors, consultants and other stakeholders. The discussions will focus on project readiness, procurement, technical requirements, contract packages, qualification criteria, risk allocation and construction while railway operations continue. The Karachi-Rohri section has been prioritised because it carries a major share of the country’s railway traffic and includes stretches affected by deteriorating infrastructure and frequent accidents. Once upgraded, the corridor is expected to allow trains to operate at speeds of up to 160 kilometres per hour. The project will include track reconstruction, selected realignments, bridges, culverts, stations, freight facilities and other infrastructure along the Keamari-Landhi-Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Nawabshah and Nawabshah-Rohri sections. Upgrades to signalling, telecommunications and Walton Academy are also part of the broader plan. The Asian Development Bank is expected to finance the project, while Pakistan is also exploring co-financing from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, World Bank, Islamic Development Bank and other partners. A meeting at Pakistan Railways headquarters reviewed preparations for the Karachi-Rohri upgrade, with Railway Board Chairman Syed Mazhar Ali Shah directing officials to complete the project review by October 30, 2026. Weekly monitoring of progress was also ordered. Officials said international expertise and market feedback would be incorporated into the project to improve its efficiency, sustainability and technical viability. Authorities also pledged to maintain transparency, competitiveness and merit throughout the procurement and implementation process. The government sees ML-1 as a key step towards modernising Pakistan’s railway network, improving passenger services, increasing freight efficiency and strengthening connectivity between major population centres and industrial areas.

GCU Lahore goes fully paperless in major digital s…

LAHORE: Government College University (GCU) Lahore has officially moved its administrative operations to a fully paperless digital system, marking a major step towards modernising governance and reducing reliance on traditional office files. The transformation has been achieved through the implementation of the e-Filing and Office Automation System, a cloud-based digital platform developed by the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB). The system has been provided to the university free of cost under special directions from the Punjab government, according to university officials. Under the new framework, administrative processes across GCU’s departments will now be handled online through a single digital platform. Routine matters such as leave applications, travel permissions, annual performance reports, official orders and departmental correspondence can now be processed electronically. The university said the system would also cover digital note sheets for proposals between departments, approval of payments for visiting faculty, purchase requests and agendas for departmental meetings. No more files moving from desk to desk One of the most significant changes will be the elimination of the traditional practice of physically moving files from one office to another. Instead, officials will be able to create, review, approve and track documents digitally through the cloud-based platform. This is expected to improve administrative efficiency while making it easier to monitor the progress of official matters. GCU Vice Chancellor Professor Muhammad Umar Chaudhry described the transition as more than an environmental initiative, saying digital governance was essential for a modern educational institution. He said moving administrative affairs away from paper would strengthen transparency, speed and accountability, while reducing delays associated with manual file tracking. According to the vice chancellor, removing routine administrative delays would allow faculty members and heads of departments to devote more time to teaching and research. Part of wider digital transformation The university said the paperless initiative is part of a broader digitalisation drive launched during the previous academic year under the vice chancellor’s leadership. Before implementing the complete e-office system, GCU had introduced online approval mechanisms for student society events and digital billing for payments to visiting faculty members. The administration is now preparing to take the process further with the planned launch of a comprehensive e-Services Portal. The upcoming platform is expected to streamline requests related to campus maintenance and other facilities. Officials hope the system will allow infrastructure-related problems to be reported and addressed more quickly without disrupting academic activities. Alumni records also going digital GCU’s digital reforms are not limited to current campus operations. The university is also working on a major project to digitise the records of its alumni, expanding technology-based management beyond day-to-day administration. The move towards a paperless campus could ultimately reduce paperwork, improve record management and provide university officials with faster access to important information. With administrative processes increasingly moving online, GCU Lahore is positioning itself as an example of how Pakistan’s public-sector universities can use digital technology to make governance faster, more transparent and more efficient.

Wildfires force 43,000 to flee in France

More than 43,000 people have been evacuated from southwestern France as massive wildfires continue to spread across several regions, threatening residential areas, forests and popular tourist destinations. French authorities have launched one of the country’s largest emergency operations of the year as firefighters work around the clock to contain the rapidly advancing flames. The worst-affected area is located near Arcachon Bay and the Cap Ferret peninsula in the Gironde region. The wildfire has already burned through more than 8,700 hectares of land and continues to spread because of strong winds, dry vegetation and extremely high temperatures. Authorities ordered the complete evacuation of the Cap Ferret peninsula, a major holiday destination on France’s Atlantic coast that attracts thousands of visitors every summer. Residents, tourists and campers were instructed to leave immediately as emergency services expanded evacuation operations. To speed up the evacuation, authorities arranged transport by both road and sea. Special boats were deployed from several coastal villages while vehicles used the peninsula’s only highway leading to the mainland. Emergency officials urged everyone in the affected areas to leave without delay for their own safety. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described the Gironde wildfire as the largest fire of the current season. He said around 80 homes have been damaged, including nearly 50 houses that were completely destroyed by the flames. More than 1,000 firefighters, supported by helicopters, military engineering units and civil security teams, are working to control the blaze in Gironde. Hundreds of police officers and emergency personnel have also been deployed to help with evacuations, traffic management and public safety. A second major wildfire is burning near Biscarrosse in the neighbouring Landes region. The fire has destroyed more than 2,500 hectares of forest and forced the evacuation of over 23,000 residents, tourists and campers. Local authorities said the blaze remains out of control after continuing to spread overnight. French President Emmanuel Macron has requested international assistance through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism. Several European countries have agreed to send additional firefighting aircraft and helicopters to help French authorities contain the fires. Croatia is sending Canadair water-bombing aircraft, while Portugal will provide specialised firefighting planes. The Czech Republic and Slovakia are also deploying heavy helicopters to assist emergency crews. Emergency officials said there have been no confirmed fatalities in the Gironde wildfire so far. However, they warned that weather conditions remain highly dangerous and could make firefighting efforts even more difficult in the coming days. Fire experts say the blazes are spreading unusually quickly because of prolonged heatwaves, severe drought and strong winds. These conditions have left forests and vegetation extremely dry, allowing fires to expand rapidly across large areas. Authorities estimate that nearly 50,000 hectares of land have burned across France since the beginning of this year’s wildfire season, making it one of the country’s most destructive fire seasons in recent years.

British funeral director sentenced to 20 years in prison for fraud and desecration of remains

Former funeral director Robert Bush, 48, has been jailed for 20 years at Hull Crown Court after pleading guilty to 67 criminal charges. The charges include preventing a lawful and decent burial, fraud by false representation, fraudulent trading, and theft, spanning a period of nearly 12 years at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull, East Yorkshire. The police investigation, launched in March 2024 following a report from a casual worker, uncovered 35 decomposing bodies left uncovered and un-cremated at the business’s Hessle Road premises. Investigators revealed that Bush had repeatedly provided grieving relatives with ashes belonging to strangers, including delivering young adult remains to the parents of a stillborn baby whose body was discovered stored in a paper bag on site. Bush also stole thousands of pounds in charitable donations collected from mourners at memorial services. Presiding Judge Nicholas Hilliard described Bush’s actions as “heartless” and motivated by greed, noting that his crimes caused pain and anguish on an incomprehensible scale. Alongside the 20-year custodial sentence, Bush has been banned from acting as a company director for 14 years. The severe failure has prompted renewed demands across the United Kingdom for stricter statutory regulation of the funeral industry.
