LAHORE: The Secretary/Chief Administrator Auqaf Punjab, Dr. Ehsan Bhutta, has announced that the three-day celebrations marking the 983rd annual Urs Mubarak of Hazrat Ali Hajveri (RA), popularly known as Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh (RA), are commencing today (August 2–4) with profound reverence, bringing together hundreds of thousands of devotees from Lahore, across the country, and abroad.

Speaking after personally visiting and conducting detailed inspections of the Milk Sabeel (Dhood Sabeel), the specially set up Marquee for pilgrims’ Langar, overall Langar distribution logistics, and the Smaa event arrangements, Dr. Bhutta stated that under the special directives of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif and the continuous monitoring of Chief Secretary Punjab, the Auqaf Department, alongside DG Religious Affairs Punjab Hafiz Anees-ur-Rehman, district administration, and security agencies, has finalized foolproof security, traffic management, dedicated parking, clean drinking water sabeels, medical camps, ambulance services, control rooms, help desks, and separate facilities for women, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities to provide a peaceful spiritual environment.

He highlighted that the three-day event will feature Quran recitations, Khatam-e-Khwajgan, Naat assemblies, spiritual Smaa sessions, Qawwali, Dhikr, academic conferences, and Qirat competitions attended by prominent scholars, Mashaikhs, and Qaris. Emphasizing that the saint’s timeless teachings preach divine love, peace, tolerance, and service to humanity, Dr. Bhutta reiterated the Punjab

Government’s vision to transform Data Darbar into an exemplary model shrine equipped with modern amenities, strictly warning that no negligence will be tolerated in public facilities as facilitating millions of pilgrims is both a sacred honor and a primary duty for the Auqaf Department.

    Pakistan unveils five-year plan to revive hockey

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) President Mohiuddin Ahmad Wani has unveiled an ambitious three-to-five-year roadmap aimed at rebuilding Pakistan’s national sport from the grassroots level and restoring the country’s competitiveness on the international stage. The plan comes at a difficult time for Pakistan hockey. The national team’s defeat against England in its opening match of the 2026 FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup has once again raised questions about the sport’s decline and the team’s ability to compete with the world’s leading sides. Wani said the federation wanted to move away from short-term decisions and instead build a sustainable system that could continuously produce quality players. “Our priority is not just to win one tournament but to rebuild the entire hockey ecosystem,” he said. Under the proposed system, young players would progress through school, district, provincial and national competitions before entering the senior setup. The PHF says the pathway will be based on merit, allowing talented players to rise through the ranks regardless of their background. The federation also plans to draw lessons from successful hockey systems in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and India. Greater emphasis will be placed on modern coaching, professional training methods and improved infrastructure. A major target is to increase the number of astro-turf facilities across Pakistan from the existing 52 to 100 within five years. The proposed facilities would not merely provide playing surfaces but also host coaching programmes, competitions and dedicated initiatives for women’s hockey. Coaching is another key part of the roadmap. Local coaches are expected to receive advanced training with the assistance of foreign experts, while the national side would be given greater international exposure through overseas tours and visits by foreign teams to Pakistan. The PHF also intends to improve financial incentives for players and provide clearer career opportunities, an important step toward encouraging talented youngsters to choose hockey as a long-term profession. The roadmap envisages grassroots and infrastructure development during the first year, stronger academies and coaching programmes in the second, followed by a performance review in the third year. Wani stressed that restoring Pakistan hockey would require sustained cooperation from governments, stakeholders and the public. The challenge is formidable, but the PHF hopes its long-term approach can turn Pakistan’s once-dominant hockey tradition into a competitive future rather than another chapter of sporting nostalgia.

According to officials, the most recent deaths directly linked to a Mount Etna eruption date back to 1987. That statistic highlights how unpredictable weather, rather than volcanic danger, remains the more immediate threat to hikers today. Mount Etna sits on the eastern side of Sicily, near the city of Catania. The PTI chairman clarified that he had not met the party founder since October 15 last year and categorically rejected any suggestion that a meeting had taken place after that date. According to him, despite repeatedly submitting requests for a meeting, he had neither been offered an opportunity nor granted permission to meet the former prime minister. Barrister Gohar said that his repeated requests had not resulted in any meeting being arranged. He maintained that he had made several attempts to obtain permission but had not received a positive response from the relevant authorities. The PTI chairman said he would once again submit a request for permission to meet the party founder. He also stressed the importance of allowing the founder’s family members and legal team to meet him. His remarks come amid continued political and legal developments surrounding the PTI founder, whose access to family members, lawyers and party leadership has remained a subject of political discussion.
