Sindh, Aga Khan University forge 5-year ties to ad…

The Sindh Cabinet has approved a five-year partnership between the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPD) and the Aga Khan University’s Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED). The Memorandum of Understanding was signed today at Chief Minister House, Karachi.

Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah, who witnessed the signing, called it “not merely an agreement” but “a solemn commitment to every child with disabilities in Sindh that their dreams matter, their potential is recognised, and their future will no longer be limited by barriers.”

The partnership will establish an Inclusion and Special Educational Needs (SEN) Unit at AKU-IED, for training, research, and innovation that will house sensory rooms, therapy spaces and dedicated resource centres. The initiative aims to train more than 2,000 educators and, through them, reach an estimated half a million school children over the next five years.

According to UNICEF, an estimated 96% of children with disabilities in Pakistan are out of school, with Sindh bearing a large proportion of this burden due to poverty, gender disparities, and limited functional accessibility. Overall, Sindh has 7.4 million out-of-school children, where disability acts as a major compounding barrier to attendance.

“For too long, children with disabilities have been invisible in our education system,” said Mr Tuaha Ahmed Faruqui, Secretary of DEPD. “Today, we are making a promise to every family in Sindh that their children matter.”

The initiative’s most ambitious commitment is workforce transformation. AKU-IED will deliver modular courses, Training-of-Trainers programmes, and certification pathways to more than 2,000 educators. Its Bachelor of Education degree will offer specialisation in inclusive education with monthly stipends.

Beyond training, the collaboration establishes a province-wide research and advocacy agenda: baseline assessments, implementation evaluations, and annual policy commissions to inform government decisions. Biennial SEN conferences and policy seminars will convene experts and advocates, while public education campaigns will produce multimedia resources, toolkits, and community sensitisation initiatives to shift mindsets about disability inclusion.

“This is not just an institutional milestone,” said Professor Farid Panjwani, Dean, AKU-IED. “It is a commitment to every child in Sindh who has been waiting for an education system that sees them, hears them, and empowers them.”

The Government of Sindh will provide grant funding, while AKU-IED contributes expertise and institutional resources. The SEN Unit will develop a strategic roadmap designed to sustain impact well beyond the five-year term.

President of the Aga Khan University, Dr Sulaiman Shahabuddin, saidid, “The true measure of an education system is whether it reaches those who have historically been left furthest behind. By preparing teachers and schools to educate children with special needs, this partnership will help to ensure that all our children have the opportunity to fulfill their potential.”

Imran Ashraf breaks silence on AI death hoax

Pakistani actor Imran Ashraf has reassured his fans that he is alive and in good health after fake, AI-generated videos claiming that he had died began circulating on social media. Ashraf addressed the rumours through an Instagram story, making it clear that reports of his death were completely false. He said he was “absolutely fine” and remained alive, while also asking his followers to remember him in their prayers. The clarification came after several manipulated videos appeared online showing seemingly authentic clips of journalists and celebrities announcing that the actor had died. The fabricated reports reportedly claimed that Ashraf had suffered a heart attack. One TikTok account shared multiple AI-generated videos featuring digitally recreated versions of well-known personalities, including actor Bilal Abbas, former cricketer Shahid Afridi and journalist Mansoor Ali Khan. Another fabricated video even appeared to depict a funeral for the popular television host and actor. The incident has once again highlighted the growing problem of artificial intelligence being used to create convincing but completely false celebrity news. Such videos can quickly spread across social media before users have an opportunity to verify their authenticity. Ashraf is also not the first Pakistani celebrity to become the target of false death reports. Singer Tahira Syed faced a similar situation in June when rumours of her death circulated online. She later posted a video confirming that she was alive and well and urged people to verify information before sharing it. Actor Tauseeq Haider also became the subject of AI-generated misinformation when fabricated images circulated claiming that he had married actor Farah Saadia. The two actors jointly rejected the claim and humorously said they were still happily single, while asking the creators to send them wedding gifts if they were going to continue the story. The spread of such fabricated content has raised concerns about the misuse of AI tools to imitate real people and create misleading narratives. With digitally generated videos becoming increasingly realistic, celebrities and public figures are facing greater difficulty in controlling false information about themselves.

According to Express News, the teenage motorcyclist died at the scene following the collision. His body was shifted to Jinnah Hospital for the completion of legal and medical procedures. Rescue officials identified the deceased as 15-year-old Sagar, son of Rajab. Police said the teenager was riding the motorcycle himself when the accident occurred. Korangi Industrial Area SHO Hukam Dad said the incident took place after the motorcycle was struck by a Mazda truck. Police arrested the truck driver shortly after the accident and took the vehicle into custody. Authorities have launched a further investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal collision. The teenager was a resident of Korangi, according to police. After the completion of the necessary legal procedures, his body was handed over to his family. The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety in Karachi, particularly involving heavy vehicles and young motorcyclists. Traffic accidents involving trucks and motorcycles can have devastating consequences because of the significant difference in size and weight between the vehicles. Police are continuing to investigate the case, while further details regarding the circumstances of the collision may emerge as the investigation progresses. Pakistani documentary selected for Locarno Film Festival

Pakistan’s presence on the international film festival circuit has grown significantly in recent years, and the latest milestone arrives in the form of a debut documentary that will carry the spirit of Sehwan to one of Europe’s most prestigious stages. Filmmaker Umair Bilal’s debut feature documentary As Light as Air has been selected for the 79th Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, where it will have its world premiere in August. The selection places Pakistani independent cinema on a platform that celebrates outstanding documentary filmmaking from around the world, and represents another meaningful step in the growing global recognition of Pakistan’s independent film movement. The film is set in Sehwan, the historic Sufi town in Sindh that is home to the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, one of Pakistan’s most revered spiritual sites. The documentary explores the lives of the pilgrims, wanderers and spiritual seekers who travel to Sehwan carrying grief, longing and hope, drawn by the promise of solace that the shrine and its rituals have offered for centuries. At the centre of the film is the practice of dhamaal, the devotional dance performed at the shrine, which Bilal has described as the heartbeat of Sehwan. Through the rhythm of the music, the movement of the devotees and the atmosphere of collective faith, the documentary offers an intimate and immersive portrait of a spiritual world that few outside Pakistan have encountered directly. As Light as Air has been selected for the Semaine de la Critique section of the Locarno festival, a dedicated showcase for outstanding documentary filmmaking that consistently attracts significant attention from international distributors and critics. The 79th Locarno Film Festival runs from August 5 to 15 and will present 103 world premieres this year across its various sections, including international competition, the Piazza Grande outdoor screenings and documentary showcases. The programme features new work by internationally acclaimed filmmakers including Hong Sangsoo, Denis Cote and Maria Back. The festival will also honour celebrated American director James Gray with its Career Leopard award, one of the most prestigious recognitions the festival offers to filmmakers who have made an enduring contribution to cinema. Festival organisers have described this year’s edition as reflecting a world shaped by conflict while celebrating the enduring power of cinema to connect audiences across cultures and borders. Against that backdrop, a documentary rooted in Pakistan’s Sufi traditions and set in one of the country’s most spiritually significant towns offers something genuinely distinctive, a window into a world of devotion, music and collective belonging that carries a universality capable of reaching audiences with no prior connection to its cultural context. For Umair Bilal, the Locarno selection is a remarkable achievement for a debut feature, and for Pakistani cinema more broadly it signals that stories told with authenticity and artistic conviction about the country’s own cultural heritage can find a home on the world stage.

Amitabh Bachchan and Parveen Babi’s complicated bond revisited

Amitabh Bachchan and Parveen Babi were among the most popular on-screen pairs of their era. Their chemistry was widely appreciated, particularly in films such as Deewaar and Kaala Patthar. The two actors developed a friendship while working together, but their relationship later became surrounded by speculation and controversy. At the time, rumours circulated that Amitabh and Parveen were romantically involved, despite Amitabh being married to actress Jaya Bachchan. However, these claims were never established as fact. Reports suggested that Amitabh eventually distanced himself from Parveen, something she reportedly found difficult to accept. Parveen later made disturbing allegations against Amitabh in an interview with a magazine. She claimed that he was an international gangster who wanted to harm her and alleged that his associates had kidnapped her. She further claimed that she had been taken to an island, where she believed doctors performed surgery on her and placed a transmitter or electronic chip beneath her ear. Her allegations attracted considerable attention, but they were later understood in the context of her deteriorating mental health. Parveen had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, a serious mental health condition that can affect a person’s perception, thoughts and behaviour. Amitabh subsequently addressed her claims and explained that her illness had caused her to become extremely fearful of other people and experience delusions and hallucinations. Despite the painful circumstances surrounding their past, another emotional episode involving Parveen occurred years later when she unexpectedly encountered her former boyfriend, actor Kabir Bedi. The meeting took place at a hotel in 2004, approximately a year before Parveen’s death. Kabir later recalled the encounter during a conversation with Siddharth Kannan. According to his recollection, he approached Parveen and greeted her warmly. However, she responded with visible sadness and spoke about how people believed she was mentally unwell. Kabir tried to reassure her, but the conversation reportedly took an emotional turn. He remembered seeing a sudden change in her expression, reflecting the difficult state she appeared to be in at the time. The meeting left a lasting impression on him, particularly because he had known Parveen closely during their relationship years earlier. Parveen Babi’s life and career remain a complicated chapter in Bollywood history. She rose to extraordinary fame during the 1970s and became one of the industry’s most recognisable actresses. Yet, behind her glamorous public image, she struggled with serious mental health difficulties and increasing isolation. Her story has continued to generate discussion because of the contrast between her remarkable success as an actress and the personal struggles she experienced later in life. Her relationships with prominent actors, including Amitabh Bachchan and Kabir Bedi, have also remained subjects of public interest, although many claims surrounding her personal life were based on rumours and accounts that cannot always be independently verified.

Joe Root returns as England Test captain, Fleming takes coaching charge

England have made major changes to their Test setup, appointing Joe Root as captain for a second stint and naming former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming as head coach. The decisions come after Brendon McCullum was removed from the Test coaching role and Ben Stokes stepped away from international cricket earlier this month. Root, 35, previously led England in 64 Test matches between 2017 and 2022. He briefly returned to captaincy during the recent series against New Zealand and has now been given the responsibility of guiding England’s next generation of Test players. The Yorkshire batter is among the greatest run-scorers in Test history, sitting second on the all-time list behind India legend Sachin Tendulkar with more than 14,000 runs. Expressing his delight at the appointment, Root said leading England in Test cricket remains a great honour and challenge. He added that he is excited to work with the team and help develop emerging talent. Root also praised Fleming, describing him as an outstanding leader with deep knowledge of the game. Fleming, who enjoyed a successful coaching career with Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, has been appointed to lead England’s Test side. Under his guidance, Chennai won five IPL titles, making him one of the most respected coaches in world cricket. The 53-year-old said his focus would be on immediate success while also building a strong foundation for England’s long-term future. He expressed excitement about working with Root and helping him succeed in his second spell as captain. England’s next Test assignment will be a three-match series against Pakistan, starting on August 19. Marcus Trescothick will handle coaching duties on an interim basis before Fleming officially takes charge later this year. England men’s cricket managing director Rob Key praised Fleming’s appointment, saying he has the experience and leadership qualities needed to turn England’s promising squad into a world-class team.
