Spiderman-A Brand New Day- a film of identity and resilience

“I am not just Peter Parker, I am Spiderman, and sometimes Spiderman has to do hard things, leaving Peter Parker’s heart broken.”

This sentence lies at the heart of the film. Spiderman must help the people of New York even if that comes at the cost of his personal happiness. He has distanced himself from those he used to know, such as his girlfriend MJ and his friend Ned.

Spider-Man: A Brand New Day has been directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and is a Marvel Studios production. It falls into the genre of action, sci-fi and adventure. With a runtime of 2 hours and 24 minutes, it has been rated at 8.2/10 on IMDB.

The plot is a fight of good against evil. The damage control centre kills Sarah, Jean’s sister, for her special powers. Jean is in their imprisonment. Bill, the director of Damage Control, seeks Spider-Man’s help to eliminate Jean. Spiderman does not know the truth, and he helps Bill. What is the truth? Will Spider-Man find out in time?

The film follows a flashback where Jean and Sarah are together, and the damage control employees kidnap Sarah. The damage control is after V. Max, and no one knows what it is.

Jean possesses extraordinary psychic abilities. Jean can get into people’s minds. She can control their minds and possess them. She has powers she cannot curb.

As Spiderman follows the trail and puts two and two together, he realises Bill was the real culprit. As Jean tries to destroy Bill, Spiderman convinces her not to. Once again, the film shows that Spider-Man’s greatest strength is compassion and not brute force.

Spiderman helps Jean understand the healing power of love. He promises to stay by her side.

In the subplot is Peter Parker’s romantic relationship with MJ (Zendaya). The relationship on the verge of destruction is restored as MJ remembers the time she spent with Peter.

Spiderman is severely injured at the end, and as Jean uses her magical powers to cure him, she is successful.

The film offers a bit of comic relief when Spider-Man exits the hospital without being noticed. It sends the audience into peals of laughter.

The characterisation is superb. Tom Holland’s (Peter Parker) performance is outstanding. Tom appears as a more mature Spider-Man who carries the burden of immense personal sacrifice without losing his compassion and sense of humour.

Zendaya (MJ) also spontaneously delivers her role. The chemistry between the two is striking despite the heartbreaking distance between them.

Visually, the film is spectacular. The web singing sequences through NewYork are exhilarating, and the cinematography is great.

The thematic concerns are of identity, sacrifice, loneliness and hope. Peter’s struggle to rebuild his life after having lost everything makes him more relatable than ever.

Spiderman- A Brand New Day follows the film Spiderman: No Way Home, documenting Peter Parker’s journey since then.

As Parker is faced with a choice to either be Spiderman or Peter he chooses to be both.

At the end, the film promises another movie, calling it Spiderman Returns. On the whole, Spiderman: A Brand New Day is a story about resilience and selflessness, and it remains true to the character of  Spiderman. It delivers thrilling action and heartfelt performances. A great film that deserves applause.

So grab your tickets before they run out!

Nimra Khan shares advice for parents on daughters’ marriage

Nimra Khan is a well-known Pakistani actress and model who has remained associated with the entertainment industry for many years. Throughout her career, she has earned recognition for her acting skills and strong presence on television. However, her personal life has also attracted considerable public attention, particularly after she went through some difficult experiences. The actress previously survived a horrific traffic accident and later spoke about facing domestic violence during her first marriage. Despite the challenges she encountered, Nimra continued to move forward and eventually found happiness again when she got married for the second time. Her second marriage initially appeared to be a happy new beginning. Nimra openly shared moments of joy with her followers and celebrated the new chapter of her life. However, the happiness did not seem to last for long. In recent weeks, both Nimra and her husband have shared cryptic posts on social media, leading fans to speculate that their relationship may have come to an end. Adding to the speculation, Nimra has removed several of her wedding pictures from social media. She has also been sharing posts discussing toxic relationships, difficult men and the importance of women maintaining their independence. Her recent messages have sparked considerable discussion among her followers. Nimra has now shared advice directed at parents who are preparing to marry off their daughters. She reposted a message from a father advising parents to carefully consider the financial circumstances and character of a man before marrying their daughters to him. The message particularly warned parents against marrying their daughters to men who are financially unstable and dependent on others. Nimra appeared to agree with the advice and emphasized the importance of checking a prospective husband’s financial situation before making such a major decision. Her message reflects a broader discussion about the responsibilities of parents when arranging or approving marriages. Financial stability, emotional maturity, respect and the ability to take responsibility are often considered important factors when evaluating a potential life partner. However, Nimra’s advice also received mixed reactions from social media users. While some people agreed with her point and appreciated her willingness to speak about the issue, others questioned whether she should be giving relationship advice based on her own experiences. One social media user commented that Nimra should focus on healing rather than becoming involved in what they described as unnecessary drama. Another person pointed out that she had already been married twice and questioned her advice about remaining single and independent. At the same time, some users defended Nimra’s viewpoint. One commenter agreed that parents should carefully evaluate a man’s circumstances before marrying their daughters but raised another question about what qualities parents should consider when evaluating girls. Nimra’s latest post has therefore opened another debate about marriage, financial stability, independence and the responsibilities of both families. While opinions remain divided, her comments have once again placed her personal experiences and views on relationships at the centre of public discussion.

Oil prices slide as US-Iran tensions ease

Global oil prices declined by about 1% on Tuesday as investors assessed the possibility of a diplomatic breakthrough between the United States and Iran. Brent crude futures fell by 54 cents, or 0.6%, to $87.82 a barrel. US West Texas Intermediate crude dropped 66 cents, or 0.8%, to $81.95 a barrel. Both benchmarks had fallen by around 1% earlier in the session. They reached their lowest levels in more than a week. The decline came after US President Donald Trump said Washington was engaged in positive talks with Iran. He also indicated that a settlement could be possible. However, Trump warned that US strikes could resume if negotiations fail. Iran has also indicated that it would respond to further attacks. The possibility of diplomatic progress has reduced some concerns about disruptions to oil supplies from the Middle East. Analysts said the market remained highly uncertain. Any breakdown in negotiations could quickly push oil prices higher. Concerns about attacks by Yemen-based Houthi fighters have also influenced the market. Officials in Yemen have warned that the Houthis could seek to disrupt shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The waterway is an important route for international energy shipments. Market analysts remain uncertain about whether the Houthis have the ability to impose a complete blockade. However, shipping activity in the Red Sea and nearby waters has already declined significantly. The Strait of Hormuz is another major concern for energy markets. It is a key route for global oil shipments. Recent data showed that oil and refined product exports through the strait had dropped sharply. Net exports averaged around 2.9 million barrels per day in the week ending July 24. The figure was nearly 5.9 million barrels per day during the previous week. The lower shipping volumes have added to concerns about global energy supplies. However, analysts said weaker demand was also preventing oil prices from rising further. Demand in Asia has been particularly affected. Slower consumption could reduce pressure on the global oil market. Investors are also watching US energy inventory data. A preliminary market survey indicated that US crude oil stocks probably declined last week. Gasoline inventories were also expected to fall. Distillate stocks, which include diesel and heating oil, were estimated to have increased. The market is now closely following developments in US-Iran talks. A successful diplomatic agreement could reduce fears about supply disruptions and support the normal flow of energy shipments. A breakdown in negotiations, however, could revive concerns over attacks and shipping disruptions.

Netflix hit with $105 million film theft lawsuit

Netflix is facing a $105 million lawsuit after filmmakers accused the streaming giant of mishandling an unreleased movie, alleging that a master copy of their World War II thriller Fortitude was stolen from the company’s Los Angeles offices, jeopardising the film’s commercial future. According to a lawsuit filed Thursday in a California federal court, writer-producer Simon Afram and his production company Op-Fortitude claim Netflix failed to properly safeguard an unencrypted copy of the film after requesting it for internal review. The complaint states that Netflix first expressed interest in acquiring Fortitude after receiving promotional materials in December 2025. The company later requested a working version of the film in June so executives could screen it internally. The filmmakers said Netflix instructed them to provide the movie through a digital cinema package (DCP), a format commonly used to protect films from unauthorised access during screenings. According to the lawsuit, one of the film’s producers personally delivered the unencrypted drive to Netflix’s Sunset Bronson Studios office on June 15. The producer allegedly instructed the company to delete the files after the screening and notify him when the drive was ready for collection. Ten days later, the filmmakers claim they were informed that the drive had been stolen. An email included in the court filing quotes Netflix’s Head of Film Acquisitions, Sean Berney, who wrote: “This is a first for us. Unfortunately, someone stole a good amount of drives from our office desks this past week. We’ve been working through this with our security teams to no luck. Our piracy teams are on high alert with the breach and will monitor.” Netflix later determined that the other missing drives contained no data. The lawsuit further alleges that Netflix refused to confirm whether it had filed a police report and declined the filmmakers’ request to involve the Los Angeles Police Department, despite the producers filing their own report. Netflix has rejected the allegations, saying it does not accept responsibility for the loss. In a statement, the company said it disputes bearing “the risk of loss for a film delivered without the proper industry-standard safeguards,” while adding that it had offered to monitor piracy websites for any unauthorised release of the film. The streamer also claimed it stopped sharing details of its internal investigation after lawyers representing Afram demanded $165 million, describing the demand as a “hostile attempt to extort money” rather than an effort to resolve the dispute in good faith. The filmmakers argue that the theft has significantly damaged the film’s market value because any potential distributor would now have to be informed that an unencrypted copy may still exist. They claim the incident has complicated acquisition discussions, insurance coverage and marketing plans while increasing the risk of an online leak before the movie’s official release. According to the lawsuit, the producers have paused negotiations with several interested domestic and international distributors until the matter is resolved. Directed by Simon West, Fortitude is based on a true World War II story about British intelligence operatives outsmarting Nazi leadership. The film stars Nicolas Cage, Matthew Goode, Ed Skrein, Jordi Mollà and Alice Eve.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly and wife receive death threats

KOLKATA: Former India captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and his wife, Dona Ganguly, have reportedly received death threats, prompting police to launch an investigation into a series of threatening letters sent to the family. According to Indian media reports, a fresh threatening letter was opened on Monday at the office of the president of the Bengal Cricket Association. The letter was reportedly written entirely in English and contained threats against Ganguly and his family. The latest incident has raised concern because the family has allegedly been receiving similar letters for around six months. Initially, the messages were reportedly dismissed as letters from overzealous or unhappy fans. However, the increasingly aggressive language and repeated threats eventually prompted the family to approach police. A formal written complaint has been submitted to the local police station by Ganguly’s family. The state government’s security department has also reportedly been informed, with the family seeking appropriate security measures. The complaint stated that unknown individuals had previously sent letters containing offensive and objectionable remarks about the former India captain. At first, the messages were believed to be linked to personal resentment or someone unhappy with Ganguly. The situation took a more serious turn when two recent letters addressed to Sourav and Dona Ganguly reportedly contained threatening language targeting not only the couple but also people working with them. Police sources said their preliminary inquiry indicated that the threatening letters had been sent by courier to Ganguly’s residence. Authorities have assured Ganguly’s personal assistant that an investigation is underway and that necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety of the former cricketer and his family. Ganguly, one of India’s most influential cricket figures, served as national captain before later becoming BCCI president. The latest threats have now placed his family under increased security attention as investigators work to identify those behind the letters.

DG Khan victims await CM’s compensation

By MIR HUNBAL BIRMANI A heartfelt public appeal has been made to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on social media , urging her to announce financial compensation for the families of the four children who were killed and sixteen injured in the Little Scholars School tragedy in Dera Ghazi Khan on May 7, similar to the relief package announced for victims of the recent Kahna, Lahore academy roof collapse. Parents of deceased children of little scholar school roof collapse incident expressed profound grief over the tragic incident in Kahna, Lahore, where the collapse of an academy roof claimed the lives of innocent children and left several others injured. They offerd prayers for the departed souls, strength for the bereaved families, and a speedy recovery for the injured. Referring to reports that the Punjab government has announced Rs2 million each for the families of the deceased and Rs500,000 each for the injured in the Kahna tragedy, the public appeal on social media describes the decision as commendable. However, it argues that the absence of a similar announcement for the victims of the Little Scholars School tragedy in Dera Ghazi Khan has created a perception of unequal treatment . The statement notes that both incidents involved the collapse of classroom roofs, resulting in the deaths and injuries of schoolchildren. It stresses that negligence and carelessness cannot be overlooked in either case and that the victims in Dera Ghazi Khan deserve the same compassion and support extended to those in Lahore. The appeal further points out that while the Chief Minister promptly announced relief for the Kahna victims, no compensation has yet been announced for the families affected by the Dera Ghazi Khan tragedy, nor did the Chief Minister visit the city to offer condolences. It says this has caused disappointment among the bereaved families and residents of Dera Ghazi Khan. Questioning the perceived disparity, the appeal states that if the Chief Minister considers herself a mother to all the children of Punjab, then the victims of both tragedies should receive equal treatment. The appeal concludes by urging Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to announce a compensation package for the families of the deceased and injured children in the Little Scholars School tragedy. It emphasizes that while no amount of money can compensate for the loss of a child or heal the grief of the parents, such assistance would demonstrate that the government stands with all citizens equally. The statement also calls upon elected representatives from Dera Ghazi Khan and the district administration to formally recommend to the Punjab government that financial assistance be provided to the affected families.

Lahore police decide polygraph test for ASI in all…

Lahore police have decided to conduct a polygraph test on an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) in connection with allegations that a young woman was sexually assaulted at Ghaziabad police station. According to police sources, ASI Imran, who is currently in custody, will undergo the test as investigators continue examining the allegations and conflicting accounts surrounding the incident. Police said the alleged victim has already undergone a psychiatric assessment. The report from the assessment is expected to be received on August 18, while additional medical and forensic examinations have also been conducted. According to the police, ASI Imran has denied the allegations. He reportedly told investigators that he had brought the woman to the police station because she was allegedly involved in begging. He claimed that he did not assault her and instead provided her with food and counselled her before sending her away. Investigators said the initial medical report contains some ambiguity regarding the allegations of sexual assault. Police officials said a detailed report from the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) is expected to provide further findings that could help investigators establish what happened. The case is being closely monitored by DIG Investigation Lahore Zeeshan Raza, who said he is personally supervising the investigation. He assured that anyone found responsible would be punished according to the law. Police sources said further tests of the alleged victim have also been conducted, but their results are still awaited. Investigators are expected to consider the medical evidence, forensic findings, statements and other available material before reaching conclusions about the case. The investigation is being conducted under the direction of DIG Investigation Lahore. A team comprising Ghaziabad Investigation Incharge Inspector Nasir Hameed, Gender Cell Incharge Inspector Fatima and Investigation Officer Faryal is working on the case. The decision to conduct a polygraph test on the detained ASI comes as investigators attempt to establish the facts surrounding the allegations. However, the reported initial medical ambiguity means that the final medical and forensic findings will be important in determining the direction of the investigation. Authorities have said that the investigation remains ongoing and that legal action will be taken on the basis of the evidence collected.
