hotel buffet leftovers

Hotel buffet leftovers reused or thrown away?

Hotel buffets are known for their wide variety of colorful and delicious dishes.  Luxury hotels often serve many different foods allowing guests to enjoy whatever they like.

But many people wonder what happens to the large amount of food left after the buffet ends. Is it served again or is it thrown away?

The answer depends on each hotel’s policy local laws, and food safety rules. Hotels must follow strict health guidelines when handling leftover food.

According to reports leftover buffet food is usually divided into three groups. The first group includes food that was prepared in the kitchen but never placed on the buffet table.

If it has been stored safely and kept at the correct temperature it may be used later. The second group is food that was displayed on the buffet.

Even if it looks fresh it is usually thrown away after the buffet because it has been left out for too long increasing the risk of bacteria.

The third group is food left on guests’ plates. This food is never reused and is always thrown away for health and safety reasons.

Food safety experts explain that cooked food can become unsafe if it stays at room temperature for too long.

That is why hotels often discard buffet food even when it still looks good.

Some unused ingredients can be given a second purpose.

For example fruits and vegetables that were never placed on the buffet may be used in soups smoothies desserts or jam.  Leftover bread can be turned into breadcrumbs or croutons.

Many hotels around the world also donate safe, untouched food to charities and non profit organizations.  This helps provide meals to people in need while reducing food waste. Before donating hotels make sure the food is still safe to eat.

Food that can no longer be eaten is sometimes used to make compost or biogas.  Compost turns food waste into natural fertilizer while biogas plants convert organic waste into energy helping protect the environment.

Experts say modern hotels are also taking steps to reduce food waste.  They prepare food more carefully study guest eating habits use artificial intelligence and data to predict demand and refill buffet trays only when needed instead of filling them all at once.

Guests can also help reduce waste by taking only the amount of food they can finish and going back for more if needed.

Although hotel policies and local laws differ from country to country the hotel industry is making greater efforts to reduce food waste maintain high food safety standards and support environmentally friendly practices.

Mill’s “On Liberty” in the era of censorship

In his 1859 political treatise On Liberty, Victorian philosopher John Stuart Mill issued this timeless warning. The greatest threat to humanity is not monarchical despotism, but the tyranny of the majority enforced through state power. The Harm Principle At the heart of Mill’s philosophy lies the Harm Principle. The radical assertion that authority can only be legitimately exercised over a member of a civilized community against their will to prevent harm to others. Beyond this minimal threshold, individual autonomy over mind, body, and speech must remain absolute. Re-reading Mill today reveals a truth. His warnings are no longer abstract political theory. They provide a precise mirror for contemporary state overreach. This overreach is illustrated by the erosion of civil liberties in Indian-administered Kashmir and the systemic suppression of media outlets like Al Jazeera. The Harm Principle and the Disfranchisement of Kashmir Mill argued that suppressing individual self-determination degrades both the citizen and the state. In Kashmir, the unilateral revocation of constitutional autonomy, prolonged blackouts, and detentions of political leaders represent a case of majoritarian coercion. A state strips millions of their basic political rights under the justification of order or national integration. So, it violates the core of Millian liberty: consent and self-governance. Mill cautioned against treating entire populations as passive subjects incapable of directing their own political destiny. By denying Kashmiris the freedom to assembly, political self-expression, and uninhibited digital communication, state machinery replaces organic democratic engagement with enforced compliance. In Mill’s framework, a government that fears the peaceful political expression of its people reveals the fragility of its own moral authority. Ban on Al Jazeera Mill’s second chapter, dedicated to freedom of thought provides the intellectual critique of state censorship. He argued that silencing an opinion is a unique crime against humanity because it presumes the state possesses infallibility. Even if an perspective is deemed antagonistic, banning it deprives the public of testing truth against error. This principle directly challenges the recent enforcement of the Al Jazeera Law, under which the Israeli government shut down the Qatari broadcaster’s local operations, confiscated equipment, and blocked access to its platforms. Citing national security threats, state authorities effectively declared themselves the sole arbiters of acceptable news coverage. Mill would argue that invoking national security to silence reporting—especially during conflicts where independent oversight is most vital—is a classic instrument of state self-protection, not public safety. When a state decides which facts citizens and the international community are allowed to hear, it undermines the very foundation of a free society. Why Mill Matters Today   On Liberty remains an indispensable framework because it demonstrates that liberty is not a luxury granted by governments, but an essential condition for truth and justice. Whether in the militarized silence enforced upon Kashmir or the legislative bans silencing journalists, the modern state increasingly employs legal mechanisms to enforce conformity. Mill reminds us that a society that trades fundamental liberties for state-defined security ultimately preserves neither.

Android 17 feature may help reduce motion sickness

Some people may suddenly experience nausea and dizziness while travelling by plane, train, ship or car. This condition is medically known as motion sickness and people affected by it may experience nausea, vomiting, dizziness and other symptoms. If you are also one of those people who experience dizziness or nausea while travelling in a moving vehicle, you are not alone. Many people around the world experience this problem. Generally, experts advise people suffering from motion sickness to avoid using their phones. However, Google has now introduced a new feature called Motion Assist for Android smartphone users. According to a report by Android Authority, Google has started gradually rolling out this feature. It is part of the Android 17 operating system and is being introduced first for Google Pixel phones. The feature is designed to help reduce the severity of motion sickness while travelling in a vehicle. What causes motion sickness? Motion sickness is a somewhat mysterious condition and its exact cause is not fully understood. However, experts have identified several possible reasons. One thing is clear: motion sickness can occur when our senses send conflicting signals to the brain. For example, if you are sitting on a swing that is moving up and down, your eyes may see one thing, your muscles may sense something else while your inner ear experiences something completely different. The brain may struggle to process these conflicting signals resulting in dizziness or nausea. Experts believe that the inner ear plays an important role in motion sickness because it helps control our sense of balance. The inner ear is part of a network known as the vestibular system which sends information about the body’s movement and surroundings to the brain. The brain combines information from different parts of the body to make sense of what is happening but sometimes these signals can become confusing. For example, while traveling on an airplane, you may feel movement but your eyes may tell your brain that you are sitting still. A similar situation can occur while travelling on a river or at sea. You may be sitting or standing on a stable surface while still experiencing a sensation of movement. Some passengers particularly those sitting away from the driver’s seat in a car can experience the same thing. All of these situations can result in motion sickness. What is Google’s new feature and how does it work? Google has been working on this feature for quite some time. The code for the feature was first spotted in December 2024 and development has continued since then. It has now become part of Android 17. Once the feature becomes available, users will be able to find it by going to Settings then Your Profiles and All Services. From there, users can access the Personal and Device Safety section and enable the feature. Once enabled, Motion Assist will automatically activate when the phone detects that it is inside a moving vehicle. Google will also provide a Motion Assist option in Quick Settings allowing users to manually turn the feature on or off. When the feature is active, users will have several customization options. They will be able to change the colour, appearance and other aspects of the motion indicators. During a journey, motion dots will appear on the screen to help reduce the feeling of nausea. It should be noted that the feature does not guarantee complete relief from motion sickness but it may still prove helpful. Are there other simple ways to prevent motion sickness? According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), several simple measures may help reduce or prevent motion sickness. These include: Prefer sitting in the front seat of a car or bus. Choose a window seat on an airplane or train. If possible, lie down and close your eyes. Drink plenty of water and avoid tea or coffee. Avoid eating large meals before travelling. Avoid smoking. Distract yourself with activities such as listening to music but avoid reading. Take deep breaths to stay calm or close your eyes and count backward from 100. Look at a stationary object such as looking at the sky while traveling in a vehicle. If available, chewing a small amount of ginger may also help. The smell of mint or using mint candies may also provide some relief.

  • Kimchi may help remove microplastics

Scientists are studying whether kimchi a popular Korean fermented food could help the body remove harmful microplastics. Early research suggests that certain beneficial bacteria found in kimchi may attach to tiny plastic particles during digestion making it easier for the body to remove them through waste. Microplastics are extremely small pieces of plastic that have already been found in human blood lungs and even the placenta. People can take them in through food drinking water and the air they breathe raising concerns about their possible health effects. In the study researchers examined a type of lactic acid bacteria taken from kimchi. They tested it in mice and found that animals given the probiotic passed nearly twice as many microplastic particles in their waste compared with those that did not receive it. Laboratory tests also showed that the bacteria attached to about 57% of the microplastic particles suggesting it may help remove them from the body. However researchers stressed that these findings are still preliminary.  The study does not prove that eating regular kimchi will have the same effect in humans. More clinical studies are needed before scientists can confirm whether kimchi or its beneficial bacteria can help reduce microplastics in the human body.

  • Too much salt? Try these simple tricks

Salt is one of the most important ingredients in cooking because it brings out the flavor of food.  A small change in spices may not make much difference but too little salt can make a dish taste bland while too much can ruin its flavor. Adding salt to food is easy when it is needed. But if you accidentally add too much salt you may think the whole dish is ruined.  Fortunately there are several simple kitchen tricks that can help reduce the strong salty taste and save your food. Add a Potato If your curry or another dish has too much salt take a raw potato cut it into two pieces and add it to the food. Let it cook for about 10 minutes and then remove it.  A boiled potato can also be used. If you prefer you can leave the potato in the curry and serve it with the dish. Use fresh cream Fresh cream can help make a salty dish taste milder. Add a small amount of cream to the curry or other suitable dishes and mix well.  It can reduce the strong salty taste while also making the food smoother and richer. Try a dough ball A small ball of flour dough is another traditional home method. Make a small dough ball and place it in the curry.  Leave it for around 15 minutes and then take it out. This may help reduce the salty taste of the dish. Add water or milk For dishes that can handle extra liquid adding a little water can reduce the salty taste.  Milk or cream can also work well in some recipes. Milk can make the flavor softer and more balanced. Use yogurt and fried onion Yogurt and fried onions can also help balance the taste especially in dishes such as meat curry karahi, or mixed vegetables. Grind some browned onions with yogurt and mix them into the dish. This can make the strong salty flavor less noticeable while adding extra taste. Add salt slowly The best way to avoid overly salty food is to add salt little by little while cooking. Taste the food before adding more.  This simple habit can help you control the amount of salt and keep your dishes flavorful. Using less salt overall is also better for general health. So instead of adding a large amount at once add small amounts gradually and adjust the taste as needed.

  • Int Youth Day – concerns, challenges of Pakistani youth

By Amir Ismaiel August 12 is observed around the world as International Youth Day. The day is observed on the recommendation of the United Nations to highlight the problems faced by young people, recognise their important role in economic and social development, and ensure their meaningful participation in decision-making. The theme of International Youth Day 2026 is “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.” The theme recognises that young people live in different national, local and social conditions, but their basic hopes are almost the same everywhere. They want a dignified life, equal opportunities, good employment, quality education and a safe and secure future. Pakistan has 64% of those who are under the age of 30, out of the 64% half of the numbers are in educational institutions and rest of them are out with some of the reasons. We are among the countries that spend the least on education, allocating around 2% of its total budget to the education . India spends around 4% while Sri Lanka and Bangladesh allocate around 2% or less. The United Nations recommends that 4% should be allocated to education. Pakistan has more than 190 universities including private and government over 100 sub-campuses, with nearly two million students studying in higher education. Providing four to five million jobs for these students in the coming years will be essential. University students face many problems in their daily routine on campus, These include rising fees, low quality of education, a lack of research opportunities, shortage of hostels and transport, inequality and harassment. At the school level, more than 15 million children are still out of school, these stats are same for years . Poor educational facilities, shortage of furniture, lack of clean drinking water, shortage of teachers and limited funding are among the main reasons. The state of higher education is also worrying. Only one Pakistani public university, Quaid-i-Azam University is among the world’s top 500 universities, while around 10 Indian universities are included in the same list. These figures raise serious questions about government priorities and the gap between official claims and the actual condition of education. Theme of International Youth Day directly connects with the problems faced by Pakistani youth. Quality education, decent employment, mental health and meaningful participation in decision-making have remained major issues for young people for decades. These problems have also increased frustration, intolerance and extremism among youth . When an educated person fails to achieve his or her goals because of a lack of merit and fair opportunities frustration naturally grows. Unfortunately, youth in Pakistan still lack a clear vision for their future and meaningful government support. The Prime Minister’s Youth Programme has mainly focused on initiatives such as laptops and scholarships, but there is a need for a much broader plan covering employment, career development, mental health and future opportunities for youth . Holding one or two youth conferences during the year cannot be enough to address these issues.Climate change has become a major challenge for the world, but Pakistan still needs a stronger plan to involve young people in dealing with it. There is also a lack of awareness and practical programmes through which young people can contribute to tackling climate change. Mental health is another serious issue. The United Nations continues to highlight the importance of addressing mental health problems among young people, but in Pakistan the issue has not received the attention it deserves. In many countries, educational institutions have dedicated departments and support systems for students’ mental health and wellbeing. Pakistan needs similar facilities. Reports of serious mental health problems and suicides among students should be treated as a national concern. Today’s students wants to see solutions to its problems through its own participation and leadership. Across Asia, the growing role of Generation Z in political and government affairs has been remarkable. India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka have witnessed major youth movements in which youth have challenged governments and demanded political and social change. Youth are also important stakeholders in educational institutions. Around the world students participate in student unions and societies, which help them develop both academic and personal skills. Debates, dialogue, sports and other activities help students build confidence, leadership and communication skills. In countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada, students are generally allowed to form unions and societies in educational institutions. These organisations are supported by universities and provide students with opportunities to develop leadership and democratic skills. Many people who later become successful in medicine, science, social sciences, sports, politics and other fields gain valuable experience through such activities during their student years. The well-known historian Dr Mubarak Ali wrote in his book Tareekh Ke Naye Zaviye that when ideological politics began among young people in the subcontinent, nationalism was one of its early forms. Students became divided between the political right and left. However, this ideological debate also encouraged students to read and study different ideas. They began to understand society and its structure through different political and social perspectives. This process helped young people develop stronger intellectual and political awareness. Democratic societies recognise the right of students to participate in political and democratic activities. In Pakistan, however, student unions have faced restrictions for almost three decades. They were banned mainly because of allegations of political violence and clashes on campuses. As a result, universities lost an important platform for political discussion, debate on social issues and dialogue on national affairs. The culture of student unions in the 1990s are very different from the environment today. In the age of artificial intelligence, social media and digital communication, educational institutions can develop a new and more responsible model of student representation. Pakistan needs to create an environment where youth can discuss their problems through dialogue and democratic participation. Students should be represented in educational decision-making bodies and given a meaningful role in consultation. Instead of taking their problems to the streets, young people should have proper platforms where they can present their concerns directly to policymakers and
