Here’s why Disney+ cancelled Marvel’s Wonder Man

Marvel Studios has reportedly cancelled Wonder Man after its first season, with the Disney+ series not expected to return for a second instalment as the company continues reshaping its television strategy.
According to Variety, Marvel never planned to move forward with a second season in the traditional way. A source told the publication that a writers’ room for a follow-up season was never opened, and members of the creative team have since been released from the project.
The comedy-drama starred Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as aspiring actor Simon Williams, alongside Ben Kingsley, who reprised his Marvel role as Trevor Slattery. The cast also included X Mayo, Demetrius Grosse, Zlatko Burić, Arian Moayed and Olivia Thirlby.
The series was created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest. Cretton directed the opening two episodes, while Guest served as the show’s executive producer and showrunner.
Despite its reported cancellation, Wonder Man received a strong response from critics. The show’s first season earned a 91% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of Marvel Television’s best-reviewed recent projects.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II also received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance. The nomination marked another milestone in his career, making him the first live-action performer to receive Emmy recognition for both Marvel and DC projects after previously winning for HBO’s Watchmen.
Television critic Alison Herman praised the performances of the two lead actors, writing, “Abdul-Mateen and Kingsley make their characters equally ridiculous and romantic, urged on by a motivation more intimate and individual than saving the world.”
Marvel described the series through its official synopsis, stating, “Aspiring Hollywood actor Simon Williams (Abdul Mateen) is struggling to get his career off the ground. During a chance meeting with Trevor Slattery (Kingsley), an actor whose biggest roles may be well behind him, Simon learns legendary director Von Kovak (Burić) is remaking the superhero film ‘Wonder Man.’”
The synopsis continues, “These two actors at opposite ends of their careers doggedly pursue life-changing roles in this film as audiences get a peek behind the curtain of the entertainment industry.”
Although Disney has not released official streaming figures, Wonder Man briefly reached No. 8 on Nielsen’s Streaming Originals chart during its debut week before dropping out of the rankings the following week.
The reported cancellation comes as Disney continues reducing its Marvel television output in favour of fewer, more focused productions. The studio has increasingly shifted away from producing a large number of interconnected streaming series, instead prioritising projects with stronger long-term potential.
The latest development is particularly surprising because Wonder Man had reportedly been greenlit for a second season in March, only weeks after its debut. However, according to Variety, those plans ultimately did not progress into active development, with no writers’ room ever being assembled.
While Marvel Studios has not officially commented on the report, the decision signals another step in Disney’s broader effort to streamline its Marvel Television slate despite the show’s positive reviews and award recognition.

Karachi Court acquits Anmol Alias Pinky in three d…

A Karachi court has acquitted Anmol, alias Pinky, in three drug-related cases after accepting her applications seeking acquittal. The Additional District and Sessions Court South approved Anmol’s acquittal applications in all three cases. The cases against her had been registered at Guzri Police Station in 2020, 2021 and 2022. According to court proceedings, Anmol had remained a fugitive in connection with these cases. During the hearing, Anmol’s defence lawyer argued that two other accused persons nominated in the cases had already been acquitted by the court. The lawyer informed the court that co-accused Ali and Fahmida had been acquitted in 2024. The defence maintained that Anmol had been implicated in the cases primarily on the basis of statements given by her alleged co-accused. According to the lawyer, since the co-accused had already been acquitted, there was no reasonable possibility of securing a conviction against Anmol on the same evidence. The defence further argued that the prosecution’s case against Anmol was dependent on the statements of the co-accused. With those individuals having already been cleared by the court, the defence contended that there was insufficient evidence to establish Anmol’s involvement in the alleged offences. After hearing the arguments, the Additional District and Sessions Court South accepted the acquittal applications and acquitted Anmol alias Pinky in all three cases. The cases were registered at Guzri Police Station over a period of three years. The court’s decision brings an end to the proceedings against Anmol in these particular cases, although the order relates specifically to the three drug cases mentioned during the hearing.   Separately, Anmol alias Pinky had also been arrested by Garden Police in Karachi in May in connection with an alleged drug trafficking case. According to police officials, the woman was arrested during an operation in which law enforcement authorities claimed to have recovered a pistol, cocaine reportedly worth millions of rupees, chemicals and other narcotics from her possession. Following her arrest, Anmol was presented before a court without handcuffs, an aspect that had also drawn attention at the time. The latest court decision concerns the three cases registered against Anmol at Guzri Police Station in 2020, 2021 and 2022. The defence specifically relied on the acquittal of the co-accused in 2024, arguing that the same evidence could not reasonably be used to convict Anmol after those individuals had already been cleared. The court ultimately accepted the defence’s plea and granted Anmol relief in all three cases. The development marks a significant legal outcome for Anmol in the cases pending against her. However, the acquittal applies to the three cases before the Additional District and Sessions Court South and does not automatically determine the outcome of any separate case or investigation in which she may be involved. The ruling also highlights the importance of evidence in criminal proceedings, particularly when a prosecution case relies heavily on statements or allegations made by co-accused persons. In this instance, the defence successfully argued that the acquittal of the co-accused weakened the case against Anmol to the extent that her conviction was no longer considered likely. The court’s order followed arguments from both sides and brought the proceedings in the three specified cases to a close.

Pakistani climbers open historic new route on broa…

Pakistani mountaineers have achieved a landmark feat by opening a brand-new climbing route on Broad Peak, one of the world’s highest mountains. The accomplishment is being hailed as a major milestone for Pakistan’s mountaineering community, showcasing the country’s growing expertise in high-altitude climbing and technical expedition planning. Broad Peak, standing at 8,051 metres (26,414 feet), is located in the Karakoram mountain range of Gilgit-Baltistan, approximately five miles from K2. Ranked as the world’s 12th-highest mountain, Broad Peak has long attracted climbers from around the globe because of its challenging terrain and unpredictable weather conditions. The newly established route, officially named the Mirza Ali Legacy Route, begins above Camp 3 and offers a fresh approach to the summit. The route was created after an intensive three-day effort that required climbers to navigate deep snow, steep rock faces, and mixed sections of snow and rock under extremely demanding conditions. The expedition was led by renowned Pakistani mountaineer Mirza Ali, founder of Karakorum Expeditions. Along with his team, he spent days fixing ropes and securing the mountain to make the route accessible for future expeditions. Their summit push began at 2:00 a.m. local time on July 19. Battling continuous snowfall, freezing temperatures, and severe weather, the climbers finally reached the summit at 9:55 p.m. after more than 24 hours of nonstop climbing. To establish the route, the team installed over 1,600 metres of fixed rope and placed permanent rock pitons at critical points to improve safety and stability. According to expedition organisers, the new line is shorter, more direct, and significantly safer than the traditional path, which passes through Broad Peak’s hazardous “V Section.” The redesigned route is expected to reduce climbers’ exposure to avalanches and falling rocks, two of the mountain’s most serious risks. Organisers estimate that under normal weather conditions, climbers using the new route should be able to reach the summit from Camp 3 within seven to eight hours and descend in approximately two to three hours, making the ascent both faster and more efficient. The route was unanimously named in honour of Mirza Ali to recognise his 16 years of dedication to Pakistan’s mountaineering sector. Throughout his career, he has trained aspiring climbers, organised national and international expeditions, and promoted Pakistan as a premier destination for adventure tourism. Reflecting on the achievement, Mirza Ali said the successful opening of the route demonstrates the technical capability, determination, and resilience of Pakistani climbers. He also stressed the importance of investing in mountaineering education, safety training, and adventure tourism, highlighting Gilgit-Baltistan’s enormous untapped potential within the mountain economy. International members of the expedition also praised the accomplishment. Argentine climber Juan Toro described the project as a historic milestone for Pakistani mountaineering, while Hungarian climber David Klein called the newly opened path an innovative and technically brilliant route that reflected the team’s exceptional skill and perseverance. The summit team included Mirza Ali, Ahmed Baig, Rizwan Dad, Waqar Ali, Nawaz Ali Khan, Zaman Karim, Juan Toro, and David Klein. To support future expeditions and improve emergency response, the team also recorded all major anchor locations using Garmin inReach GPS technology, ensuring the new route can be safely managed for climbers in the years ahead.
