RAWALPINDI: A young woman was allegedly shot dead by her brother in Gujar Khan after she had married a man of her choice, police said on Saturday.

The accused, who allegedly killed his sister two days ago, has been arrested by police. A case has also been registered at Gujar Khan Police Station on the complaint of the victim’s father.

According to the family, the woman had left home in January during her leave and married a man of her choice. She had subsequently been living with her husband in Karachi.

Police said the woman’s brother recently brought her back to the family home from Karachi after reconciliation between the two sides. Her father later alleged that his son shot and killed his daughter over her decision to marry according to her own choice.

Further investigation into the incident is underway.

      FAISALABAD: Police in Faisalabad have arrested a suspect accused of killing a 10-year-old boy after allegedly attempting to sexually assault him and attacking him when the child resisted. He was taken into custody during questioning of several suspects as part of the investigation into the child’s murder. Police said the suspect eventually confessed during interrogation to killing the boy by cutting his throat with a sharp-edged weapon. Further legal proceedings against the accused are currently underway. According to a police spokesperson, the victim, identified as 10-year-old Bilal, was a resident of Rehmanpura in Faisalabad. The child had reportedly left his home five days earlier to buy ice when the suspect allegedly approached him and took him to an isolated location on the pretext of going somewhere with him. Police said the suspect then allegedly attempted to sexually assault the child. When Bilal resisted, the suspect attacked him with a sharp-edged weapon, cutting his throat and killing him before fleeing the scene. The child’s body was later recovered, prompting his father to approach the police and lodge a case against unidentified individuals. Police subsequently launched an investigation and began searching for those involved in the killing. As part of the investigation, police questioned several individuals who were considered suspects or persons of interest. During questioning, investigators reportedly found Saqib’s statements suspicious and took him into custody for further interrogation. Police said that during the subsequent investigation, the suspect confessed to killing Bilal. Investigators are now carrying out further legal proceedings against him.       Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has called for a more supportive regulatory framework to expand electronic transactions, improve digital access to finance and accelerate Pakistan’s broader digital transformation. The minister made these remarks during a meeting with Pakistan Digital Authority (PDA) Chairperson Dr Sohail Munir, where the two discussed digital finance, technology-driven economic activity and the development of Pakistan’s digital infrastructure. According to the Ministry of Finance, Aurangzeb stressed that existing regulations must evolve alongside technological advancements and new business models. The meeting focused on creating an environment that recognises electronic transactions and encourages greater use of digital systems in trade and financial activities. The participants also examined ways to improve access to finance by expanding digital platforms and making financial procedures more efficient. Aurangzeb particularly highlighted the need to simplify customer onboarding, strengthen data-sharing systems and improve the interoperability of financial information. Greater integration between banks and capital markets was also discussed, with the aim of making investment opportunities more accessible to ordinary citizens. The minister said streamlined digital account-opening procedures could encourage wider participation in the capital market. Better connections between banking and capital-market systems, he added, could increase investor participation and improve access to investment opportunities. The meeting also covered the importance of connecting government data systems. According to the ministry, better-integrated data could help policymakers improve planning, policy formulation and decision-making. The increased use of technology and artificial intelligence was identified as another opportunity to improve the efficiency of government and financial services. Digital infrastructure was another key area of discussion. Aurangzeb emphasised that new initiatives should be practical, scalable and consistent with Pakistan’s wider digital transformation goals. Digital assets and tokenisation were also discussed, particularly their possible applications in real estate and other investment sectors. Participants stressed that appropriate regulations and supporting mechanisms would be necessary for the responsible adoption of emerging technologies. Aurangzeb appreciated the work of the Pakistan Digital Authority and called for practical, high-impact initiatives that could improve efficiency, expand financial access and strengthen the country’s digital capabilities. He also emphasised continued coordination among relevant stakeholders to ensure steady progress in Pakistan’s digital economy. Pakistan has already witnessed significant growth in digital payments. According to the State Bank of Pakistan, retail payments through the banking system reached 3.7 billion transactions during January-March 2026, representing a 9% increase from the previous quarter. Digital channels accounted for 92% of total retail payment volumes, processing around 3.4 billion transactions worth Rs68.3 trillion. Mobile banking and digital wallet registrations exceeded 132 million by March 2026, rising 37% year-on-year. Nearly half of Pakistan’s 268 million bank accounts were connected to a mobile banking application or digital wallet. Meanwhile, Raast processed 742 million transactions worth Rs23.27 trillion during the quarter, reflecting growing public acceptance of instant digital payments. Mobile wallets such as Easypaisa and JazzCash have also expanded access to basic financial services, particularly for people previously underserved by traditional banking. Merchant adoption is growing as well. QR-enabled merchants more than tripled during FY25, rising from 516,000 in FY24 to more than 1.9 million by the end of 2025. Although digital adoption remains stronger in urban areas, the figures indicate that Pakistan’s digital financial ecosystem is expanding rapidly.

She said holding a gathering with a large number of empty chairs would be disrespectful to Zardari. She also criticised those who advised the PPP leadership to hold the event in Lahore. She said the party should review the advice it receives from its provincial leadership. Bukhari claimed that the Governor House Punjab had a large number of empty chairs during the gathering held the previous night. She claimed around 2,000 chairs had been arranged for the event. However, she alleged that only around 150 people were present. The minister used the reported attendance to question the PPP’s political standing in Punjab. She said the party’s poor position in the province was partly linked to the information being provided to its leadership. According to Bukhari, some party leaders are giving senior leadership inaccurate reports about the party’s popularity and political strength. She said such reporting could prevent the PPP leadership from understanding the actual situation on the ground. Bukhari also criticised the PPP’s Punjab leadership for what she described as misplaced priorities. She alleged that the provincial leadership was more focused on the Punjab government than on strengthening the PPP itself. The minister said the party should focus on expanding its political presence and improving its organisational structure in Punjab. She argued that greater attention to party affairs could have prevented the PPP from reaching its current political position in the province. Bukhari’s comments reflect the continuing political rivalry between the ruling Punjab setup and opposition parties in the province. That loophole is exactly what people online are now trying to exploit. This trick has already spread across social media, with people from different countries picking it up. Reactions online have mostly ranged from disbelief to outright frustration at the whole situation. Many users have pointed out the irony that copyrighted music seems to receive stronger legal protection online than personal privacy does. Being filmed without consent, by comparison, often leaves people with far fewer options. Copyright law tends to apply fairly consistently across different countries, but privacy law is a different story entirely.
