Nepal: Deep sorrow swept through Nepal as family, friends, teachers, and students gathered at Nirmal Purja’s former school to honor the legendary mountaineer, whose life was tragically cut short in a deadly avalanche on Pakistan’s Broad Peak.

At Small Heaven School in Chitwan, candles were lit and flowers placed before a portrait of the celebrated British-Nepali climber, creating an emotional tribute to a man whose remarkable achievements inspired millions around the world. The ceremony took place as rescue teams recovered the 43-year-old’s body following the avalanche that claimed the lives of ten climbers last Thursday.

Those who knew Purja long before he became an international mountaineering icon remembered him as a determined and fearless child with extraordinary ambition. Former classmate Dhiraj Bahadur Panta recalled the anxious days when Purja was reported missing, saying friends and admirers across the world had prayed for his safe return. He described the loss as heartbreaking, adding that fate had taken away a man admired by countless people.

Teachers also reflected on Purja’s early years, describing him as disciplined, honest, and courageous. Shailendra Baral, who supervised him in the school hostel, said Purja displayed exceptional confidence even as a young student and always stood out for his determination to achieve something meaningful in life.

Purja went on to become one of the greatest mountaineers of his generation. In 2019, he rewrote climbing history by scaling the world’s 14 highest peaks in just over six months, smashing a record that had stood for years. His extraordinary accomplishment was later featured in a Netflix documentary, inspiring aspiring climbers and bringing global recognition to Nepal’s mountaineering community.

He further cemented his legacy in 2021 by joining the all-Nepali team that completed the first-ever winter ascent of K2, one of the world’s most dangerous mountains. A year later, he returned to his hometown for the screening of his documentary, proudly telling local residents that he hoped his journey would encourage young people to dream beyond their circumstances.

Students attending the memorial said Purja’s story had become an enduring source of inspiration within the school. They remembered him not only as a national hero but also as someone who brought immense pride to Nepal through his courage, determination, and unwavering spirit.

As tributes continue to pour in from around the world, Nirmal Purja is being remembered not only for conquering the planet’s highest peaks but also for inspiring generations to believe that no dream is beyond reach.

The investigation traces back to a woman in her late thirties who walked into a Glasgow police station late last year to report the assault. She described how, in 2012, she had called officers to her home after a disturbance, only for one of the responding officers to later attack her. He said that not only the business community but the entire nation would support genuine efforts aimed at improving governance and strengthening national institutions. Hawaii County officials said that as of 1:00 a.m. local time Sunday, two areas on Big Island had experienced flash flooding, warning that several occupied homes may have been swept off their foundations. Big Island Mayor Kimo Alameda said the county’s civil defense agency launched a search and rescue operation to locate residents whose homes may have been carried away by floodwaters. He described the rescue effort as especially difficult given the combination of rushing water, debris, boulders blocking roads and darkness. Footage released by Hawaii’s Department of Transportation shows roads submerged under fast moving water and blocked by fallen trees. Green urged residents to prepare for what he called an incredible amount of water and pleaded with people to stay off the roads during the storm, delivering the warning in a video posted to social media. The governor said 190 flights have been postponed as a result of the storm. At Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport, Big Island’s largest airport, 40 percent of flights were grounded Saturday according to flight tracking service FlightAware, while roughly 80 percent of flights were canceled at Hilo International, the island’s other major airport. Green said three hospitals also lost electricity but continued operating on backup generators. In Maui, some residents have been without water service since Saturday afternoon. A county statement said crews who responded to assess the situation were forced to turn back due to worsening weather and multiple downed trees, adding that repair work would resume once conditions allow safe access. Meteorologist Jennifer Myers, who lives in Hilo on Big Island’s eastern coast, said landslides have already cut off some roads while falling trees have torn down power lines in the area. Describing the view from her apartment overlooking the Wailuku River where it meets Hilo Bay, she said the water level had risen dramatically and that the bay, normally blue, had turned a deep red from sediment and runoff pouring into it. The hurricane ultimately did not make landfall on Big Island as some forecasts had suggested was possible, instead passing within 30 miles, or 48 kilometers, of the island’s South Point. Tropical storm warnings remain in effect across all eight of Hawaii’s major islands, including Big Island, Maui, Molokai, Kahoolawe, Oahu, Lanai, Kauai and Niihau. Big Island had previously been under a full hurricane warning. The National Hurricane Center said damaging winds and heavy rain will continue across Big Island overnight before spreading westward to the smaller islands on Sunday. Officials had repeatedly urged residents to prepare ahead of the storm’s arrival. Social media posts from local community groups showed residents filling sandbags to protect their homes and asking about store hours in the early hours of Saturday. Hawaii County’s Civil Defense Agency said public shelters remain open across every district on Big Island.

According to the police chief, the police surgeon neither personally examined the body nor conducted the medical examination, and any reservations about the findings should have been communicated to investigators without delay. Azad Khan said police based their early investigation on the preliminary medico-legal report provided by the MLO. He added that confirmation of gunpowder residue on the deceased’s hands was also essential to the investigation. The police chief said the Crime Scene Unit collected evidence from the scene and handed all relevant material over to the medical team. He also questioned why the medical team did not visit the crime scene, noting that in many countries medical experts inspect the scene themselves, particularly in high-profile cases. He said that if Mir Raza’s family requests it, another medical examination can be conducted. Meanwhile, investigators are looking into the disappearance of the weapon believed to be linked to the case. Azad Khan also confirmed that police are searching for a waste collector seen in a video recorded near the scene. He said locating the missing weapon could help investigators resolve key questions surrounding Mir Raza’s death. The investigation remains ongoing, with police continuing to gather evidence and examine all possible leads.
