Nepal: Deep sorrow swept through Nepal as family, friends, teachers, and students gathered at Nirmal Purja’s former school to honor the legendary mountaineer, whose life was tragically cut short in a deadly avalanche on Pakistan’s Broad Peak.

At Small Heaven School in Chitwan, candles were lit and flowers placed before a portrait of the celebrated British-Nepali climber, creating an emotional tribute to a man whose remarkable achievements inspired millions around the world. The ceremony took place as rescue teams recovered the 43-year-old’s body following the avalanche that claimed the lives of ten climbers last Thursday.

Those who knew Purja long before he became an international mountaineering icon remembered him as a determined and fearless child with extraordinary ambition. Former classmate Dhiraj Bahadur Panta recalled the anxious days when Purja was reported missing, saying friends and admirers across the world had prayed for his safe return. He described the loss as heartbreaking, adding that fate had taken away a man admired by countless people.

Teachers also reflected on Purja’s early years, describing him as disciplined, honest, and courageous. Shailendra Baral, who supervised him in the school hostel, said Purja displayed exceptional confidence even as a young student and always stood out for his determination to achieve something meaningful in life.

Purja went on to become one of the greatest mountaineers of his generation. In 2019, he rewrote climbing history by scaling the world’s 14 highest peaks in just over six months, smashing a record that had stood for years. His extraordinary accomplishment was later featured in a Netflix documentary, inspiring aspiring climbers and bringing global recognition to Nepal’s mountaineering community.

He further cemented his legacy in 2021 by joining the all-Nepali team that completed the first-ever winter ascent of K2, one of the world’s most dangerous mountains. A year later, he returned to his hometown for the screening of his documentary, proudly telling local residents that he hoped his journey would encourage young people to dream beyond their circumstances.

Students attending the memorial said Purja’s story had become an enduring source of inspiration within the school. They remembered him not only as a national hero but also as someone who brought immense pride to Nepal through his courage, determination, and unwavering spirit.

As tributes continue to pour in from around the world, Nirmal Purja is being remembered not only for conquering the planet’s highest peaks but also for inspiring generations to believe that no dream is beyond reach.

    Chief Election Commissioner of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, retired Justice Ghulam Mustafa Mughal, has said that the law and order situation in Muzaffarabad has improved, following concerns over uncertainty and security challenges in the city. Justice (retd) Ghulam Mustafa Mughal said that while there had been an atmosphere of uncertainty in Muzaffarabad the previous day, the situation had now become more stable and peaceful. He added that additional security personnel had been deployed at the two most sensitive constituencies in the region to ensure peaceful polling. The chief election commissioner said that security arrangements for elections on migrant seats in Pakistan were the responsibility of the relevant provincial governments. He explained that election materials had been dispatched to polling stations and that presiding officers had also left for their assigned areas. “Election equipment has been sent to the polling stations, and presiding officers have moved toward their respective locations,” he said, adding that in some remote areas, the transportation of election materials was continuing gradually due to logistical challenges. Justice Mughal confirmed that polling in Muzaffarabad would take place the following day and identified two constituencies—LA-5 Khawora and LA-3 Lajrat—as highly sensitive areas requiring additional security arrangements. He said extra security forces had been deployed at sensitive polling stations, while Quick Response Force units would also remain available throughout the polling process. In the event of any emergency or disturbance, the quick response teams would immediately intervene to control the situation and maintain peace. The chief election commissioner expressed confidence that the security arrangements would help ensure a smooth and transparent election process. He emphasized that all necessary measures were being taken to protect voters, polling staff, and election officials. Meanwhile, preparations for the second phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir elections have been completed. Polling will be held in three districts of the Muzaffarabad division as well as on 12 seats reserved for Kashmiri refugees living in Pakistan. According to the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission, the Muzaffarabad division consists of three districts: Muzaffarabad, Neelum, and Jhelum Valley. More than 890,000 registered voters are eligible to cast their ballots across these areas. A total of 208 candidates are contesting elections in nine constituencies across the three districts. The voting process will also include refugee seats representing Jammu and Kashmir Valley migrants who are currently residing in Pakistan. The Election Commission stated that six seats representing Jammu and six seats representing the Valley will be contested by Kashmiri refugees living in Pakistan. These seats are part of the legislative structure of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and allow displaced communities to participate in the political process. Authorities have increased security arrangements across polling areas to prevent any disruption and ensure that voters can exercise their right peacefully. Election officials have also directed security agencies and administrative departments to remain alert throughout polling day. The second phase of voting is being closely monitored due to the importance of the constituencies involved and previous concerns regarding security. Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, Uzma said she was deeply concerned about her brother’s physical and mental condition following his prolonged confinement in Adiala Jail. She claimed Imran had repeatedly complained about being kept in solitary confinement and said he believed he was being treated inhumanely. According to Uzma, Imran told her that his concerns were not being properly heard by jail authorities. She said he had complained about the lack of human contact and believed that the isolation was affecting his health. Uzma further claimed that a doctor who examined Imran on August 10 attributed his anxiety and high blood pressure to his prolonged solitary confinement. She also said newspapers and television access had only been provided to him for a limited period. The PTI founder’s sister said she attempted to reassure him during their meeting, telling him that people across the country stood with him and that he should remain hopeful. Dispute over hospital transfer Uzma also provided details of the events surrounding Imran’s proposed transfer to Shifa International Hospital. She said she reached Adiala Jail between 8pm and 8:30pm after being contacted by authorities. She waited there with Imran’s physician, Dr Faisal Sultan. According to Uzma, they were later informed that Imran had been taken away, but she was not initially told where he had been taken. She said she was subsequently taken in a vehicle accompanied by a security convoy. After travelling for some time, she was informed that they had reached the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). Uzma said she reminded officials that the Supreme Court had ordered Imran’s transfer to Shifa International Hospital. She was reportedly told that he had instead been taken to PIMS for an eye examination. When she eventually met her brother, Uzma said Imran appeared surprised to see her. She told him that he was expected to undergo a comprehensive medical examination at Shifa. She said doctors at PIMS checked his blood pressure and examined his eyes. Dr Faisal Sultan separately said he had been summoned and taken to Shifa International Hospital but was repeatedly given unclear responses when he asked when Imran would arrive. He said he eventually concluded that the PTI founder would not be brought to the hospital. Government seeks review of Supreme Court order The dispute intensified after the federal government approached the Supreme Court seeking a review of its August 18 order concerning Imran’s medical examination and proposed transfer to Shifa International Hospital. The government had earlier filed a review petition, but it was returned after objections were raised by the Supreme Court registrar’s office. The government subsequently refiled the petition after addressing those objections. In its revised plea, the government argued that the August 18 order had been issued beyond the court’s jurisdiction and contained errors of law that warranted reconsideration. The government also relied on the Pakistan Prison Rules, 1978, arguing that the transfer of a convicted prisoner to a hospital is governed by a prescribed legal procedure. It referred specifically to Rule 197, which deals with the mechanism for transferring prisoners for medical treatment. The government further invoked Article 10-A of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to a fair trial and due process. It argued that adequate notice and an opportunity of hearing should be provided to both sides. The government therefore asked the apex court to review and recall its earlier order. Government rejects allegations of non-compliance Information Minister Attaullah Tarar defended the government’s position and rejected claims that the Supreme Court’s directive had been ignored. In a statement posted on X, Tarar said Imran had been taken for a medical examination during the early hours of August 21 under appropriate security arrangements. He said a team of doctors, including specialists in ophthalmology, cardiology and general medicine, examined Imran and declared him medically fit. Tarar said Uzma remained present during the medical examination and treatment process. According to the minister, Imran was subsequently returned to Adiala Jail at around 5am. In another statement, Tarar clarified that the examination was conducted at PIMS and that doctors from Shifa International Hospital were also present. He attributed the decision to use PIMS to security concerns surrounding the route to and area around Shifa International Hospital, which he said had been created by PTI workers. The minister maintained that the government had provided medical facilities to Imran in the past and would continue to do so whenever required. Opposition accuses government of contempt Opposition parties, however, strongly criticised the government’s handling of the matter. Opposition leaders alleged that the Supreme Court’s order had not been implemented in the manner directed and questioned the circumstances under which Imran was separated from his sister and physician. National Assembly Opposition Leader Mehmood Khan Achakzai and Senate Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas criticised the government’s decision and said those responsible should be held accountable. Achakzai questioned the circumstances surrounding the events during the night and described the episode as evidence of wider political problems in the country. Raja Nasir Abbas alleged that the government had effectively disregarded the Supreme Court’s decision by not transferring Imran to Shifa International Hospital as expected. He said the opposition would continue its legal and political struggle over the matter. The opposition leaders also expressed concern about Imran’s health and called for his medical treatment to be conducted transparently. Opposition alliance plans Supreme Court action The opposition’s joint parliamentary party, operating under the Tehreek Tahaffuz Aiyeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) platform, also held a meeting at Parliament House. The board included specialists in eye diseases, cardiology and general medicine. The report states that Imran Khan is around 73 years old. His blood pressure was recorded at 140/80. His pulse was 54 beats per minute. His ECG was found to be normal. His chest was also clear. Doctors found his heart valves and chambers to be normal. The report says Imran Khan complained of heaviness in his head. He also reported feeling that his heartbeat was faster than usual. However, he did not report chest pain. He also did not complain of chest heaviness or shortness of breath. The medical board recommended medicines to control his blood pressure and anxiety. Doctors also recommended regular physical activity. The board suggested that Imran Khan should walk for one hour every day. It also recommended activities that could provide mental relaxation. The report recommends that he should be provided with magazines, newspapers, television and books. These activities could help reduce mental stress during his imprisonment. The medical board also recommended increasing the duration of meetings with Imran Khan’s family and wife. According to the report, greater family interaction could help control his anxiety and blood pressure. The recommendations come amid repeated demands from PTI leaders for greater access to the former prime minister. Jail authorities said Imran Khan receives regular medical attention. Medical officers reportedly check his food intake and conduct medical examinations three times a day. The report also states that several government doctors have examined him during his imprisonment. Records of these medical examinations have reportedly been maintained. The former prime minister has also received treatment from an eye specialist. According to the jail authorities, one of his eyes has now recovered to an almost normal condition. The report includes a summary of medical examinations conducted by 39 different specialists between November 4, 2023, and August 10, 2026. The jail authorities have asked the Supreme Court to dispose of the petition. They maintain that Imran Khan is receiving regular medical care inside the prison. Jail authorities claimed that some meetings had been used to generate public sentiment against the judiciary, foreign policy and law enforcement institutions. According to the report, Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi meet every Tuesday under jail rules. A total of 84 meetings between them have reportedly taken place so far. The document also states that Imran Khan’s lawyer Salman Safdar met him on February 10 and April 4, 2026. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi recently announced a protest programme if Imran Khan was not allowed access to his family and personal physicians. The issue of Imran Khan’s health has become a major point of political debate. PTI leaders have repeatedly demanded better medical facilities and greater access to his personal doctors. A psychiatrist cited in the report said that “Level 3+” anxiety indicates a severe state of anxiety and distress. The psychiatrist explained that prolonged isolation and limited social interaction can worsen anxiety. Such conditions may also contribute to hopelessness and depression. He said regular interaction with other people can help reduce anxiety. He also recommended walking and exercise as useful measures for managing symptoms of anxiety and panic. The three-member Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Shahid Waheed will hear the petition. Justice Naeem Afghan and Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim are also part of the bench. The court will examine the medical report and the concerns raised over Imran Khan’s health, medical treatment and access to family members and doctors.
