Gold prices jump Rs3,000 per tola in Pakistan

Gold prices continued their upward trend in Pakistan on Friday, with the price of the precious metal increasing by Rs3,000 per tola in line with gains in the international market.

According to the All Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Association (APGJA), the latest increase pushed the price of one tola of gold to Rs430,436, marking another sharp rise in the local bullion market. The increase comes amid continued strength in global gold prices and growing demand for safe-haven assets.

The association also reported an increase in the price of 10 grams of gold. Following a rise of Rs2,572, the price of 10 grams reached Rs369,029.

Bullion dealers said local gold prices generally move in line with international market trends and are also influenced by fluctuations in the value of the Pakistani rupee against the US dollar. Any increase in global prices is usually reflected in domestic rates.

In the international market, gold prices also recorded a significant gain. The price of the precious metal rose by $30 per ounce, taking it to $4,080 per ounce. The global increase provided further support to rising prices in Pakistan.

Gold is widely regarded as a safe investment during periods of economic uncertainty and market volatility. As international prices continue to strengthen, local buyers and jewellers are closely monitoring market movements for further changes in bullion rates.

Market analysts believe domestic gold prices will continue to follow international trends, with future movements depending on global economic conditions, investor demand and currency fluctuations. Buyers are expected to remain cautious as higher prices increase the cost of jewellery and investment purchases

Rubio warns Iran’s Hormuz demands could threaten global trade and regional security

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned that Iran’s demand to control shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could create a dangerous international precedent with serious consequences for global trade and economic stability. Speaking at a meeting of Southeast Asian foreign ministers in Manila, Rubio said allowing any country to control an international waterway and impose tolls through force would undermine international law and encourage similar actions in other regions. Rubio addressed ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations at the start of their annual gathering, where concerns over renewed fighting in the Middle East dominated discussions. He assured regional partners that despite Washington’s focus on the conflict with Iran, the United States remains fully committed to its relationship with ASEAN and its security partnerships in Asia. He warned that if Iran is allowed to demand payment from ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz while threatening attacks against those that refuse, it could encourage other countries to adopt similar tactics in strategic waterways around the world. Rubio said such a development would pose a serious threat not only to the Middle East but also to the Indo Pacific region, where global shipping routes are equally vital. The US secretary also accused Iran of backing away from commitments made under an earlier ceasefire arrangement. He said Tehran has contacted Washington through both direct and indirect channels to discuss possible negotiations. While the United States remains open to a diplomatic solution, Rubio said it would not tolerate attacks on commercial shipping or American personnel in the region. The ASEAN meeting has brought together senior diplomats from major global powers including the United States, China, Russia, India, Japan, and Australia. Many participating countries expressed concern over the impact of the Iran conflict on energy supplies and international markets. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow hopes for a quick resolution to tensions between Washington and Tehran. He stated that continued conflict hurts the global economy and affects Russia as well. Lavrov added that stable energy prices are important for long term economic planning and said Russia supports efforts to end the crisis peacefully. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong also called for an immediate ceasefire and renewed negotiations. She warned that the security situation in the Middle East could worsen without warning and stressed that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is essential for restoring stability in global energy markets. The International Energy Agency has described the current situation as a major warning for Southeast Asia’s energy security. The region depends heavily on oil and liquefied natural gas transported through the Strait of Hormuz. According to the agency, Asian countries imported about 80 percent of the crude oil and nearly 90 percent of the liquefied natural gas passing through the waterway last year. Any prolonged disruption could increase energy prices and place additional pressure on economies across the region. On the sidelines of the summit, Rubio also met foreign ministers from the Quad partnership, which includes the United States, Australia, India, and Japan. The group reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining maritime security and ensuring freedom of navigation while expressing concern over China’s growing influence in regional waters. Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi criticised attempts to change the regional balance through force, referring to disputes in the South China Sea and East China Sea. Penny Wong echoed those concerns, saying that actions increasing regional instability must be addressed through dialogue and international cooperation. Rubio also held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The two discussed a recent confrontation between Chinese and Philippine forces in disputed waters. Rubio described the incident as an escalation and said disagreements between Washington and Beijing must be managed carefully to avoid wider conflict. He added that both sides also discussed trade issues ahead of a planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year. Rubio is expected to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov again to discuss the war in Ukraine and explore whether there is an opportunity to revive diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict. Officials said the meetings in Manila highlight the growing connection between security challenges in Europe, the Middle East, and the Indo Pacific as world leaders seek ways to prevent further instability.

Pakistan plans digital system for private Hajj 202…

The Ministry of Religious Affairs has decided to introduce a new digital system for the private Hajj operation in 2027 in line with Saudi Arabia’s Nusuk Masar system. Under the new arrangement, bookings for private Hajj will be processed through the Ministry of Religious Affairs instead of being handled directly by private Hajj operators. For the first time, both the government and private Hajj operations will come under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, according to sources. Sources said the private Hajj scheme will be operated through the ministry’s official Pak Hajj app, which will serve as the digital platform for managing bookings and related arrangements. The move is aimed at bringing greater transparency, centralised oversight and digital management to the private Hajj scheme. It will also align Pakistan’s private Hajj operations with the digital procedures being implemented by Saudi authorities. Under the proposed system, pilgrims seeking to perform Hajj through the private scheme will be able to access the relevant services through the official digital platform, while the ministry will maintain direct oversight of the process. The decision marks a significant change from the existing arrangement, under which private Hajj operators play a central role in booking and managing pilgrims. The ministry is expected to announce further details regarding registration, booking procedures, packages, payments and the role of private operators as preparations for Hajj 2027 progress.

Trump says US-Iran talks to resume Monday

US President Donald Trump has announced that fresh negotiations between the United States and Iran are expected to begin on Monday, saying he decided to suspend planned military action after being encouraged by signs of progress toward a possible agreement. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said discussions with Tehran would resume through diplomatic channels, expressing hope that negotiations could help prevent further escalation in the region. He did not disclose the venue of the talks or identify the officials expected to participate. Earlier, Trump stated that he had delayed what he described as a large-scale military operation after receiving requests from Iran and several key US allies in the Middle East to give diplomacy another opportunity. According to him, regional partners believed a negotiated settlement was within reach and urged Washington to avoid immediate military action. Trump said Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar had all encouraged restraint, arguing that continued dialogue offered the best chance for reducing tensions. He added that discussions were expected to cover issues related to the Strait of Hormuz as well as Iran’s nuclear programme. Despite Trump’s comments, Iranian authorities have not officially confirmed the planned negotiations. Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency rejected claims that Tehran had requested the United States to postpone military action, describing the assertion as inaccurate. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, however, said negotiations involving Oman over the future of the Strait of Hormuz were progressing toward a final stage, indicating that diplomatic contacts remain active. Trump also declined to set a deadline for reaching an agreement, saying his administration was prepared for different outcomes but preferred a peaceful resolution over military confrontation. The announcement had an immediate impact on global energy markets. Oil prices fell sharply in early Asian trading as investors reacted to the possibility of reduced tensions in the Gulf region. Brent crude and US benchmark oil both recorded notable declines following Trump’s remarks. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important shipping routes, with roughly one-fifth of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas supplies passing through the narrow waterway. Any disruption in the area has the potential to significantly affect international energy markets.

Punjab University Town-III project faces fresh scr…

LAHORE: A Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) lawmaker has submitted an adjournment motion in the Punjab Assembly, calling for a comprehensive investigation into alleged financial and administrative irregularities surrounding the Punjab University Town-III housing scheme. According to the motion submitted by MPA Raja Shaukat Aziz, the housing project was allegedly launched in 2017 by a Punjab University professor without fulfilling the required legal and regulatory formalities. It further claims that the professor entered into a development agreement with his own brother, who was appointed as the project’s developer despite the alleged absence of due legal procedures. The motion alleges that payments amounting to Rs2.70 billion were made to the developer. However, despite the release of funds, no significant development work was carried out at the project site, and plot holders have yet to receive possession of their plots. The document states that nearly 900 affected families have been waiting for justice for the past nine years, claiming they have suffered financial losses and uncertainty due to the stalled housing scheme. It further alleges that, despite repeated complaints, no effective legal action has been taken against those purportedly responsible. Seeking legislative intervention, Raja Shaukat Aziz has urged the Punjab Assembly to establish a special committee to investigate the Town-III project, determine responsibility for the alleged irregularities, and ensure appropriate legal action against those found accountable. The Punjab University Town-III housing scheme has previously remained under public and academic scrutiny over allegations of administrative and financial mismanagement. The latest move is expected to renew debate over accountability and transparency in public housing projects.
