Martha Stewart row leaves Meghan Markle facing fresh backlash

Meghan Markle continues to face intense media scrutiny following her return to England with Prince Harry. Much of the latest controversy stems from comments made by Martha Stewart. The lifestyle icon claimed Meghan discussed her recent trip at an LA dinner party. Stewart also made pointed remarks about Meghan’s career shift from actress to princess to lifestyle personality. The controversy prompted TalkTV host Kevin O’Sullivan to sit down with commentator Kinsey Schofield to unpack where the story likely originated. Schofield suggested Stewart may not have realised her comments would create problems for Meghan. She described the moment as appearing to be a genuine, unplanned remark from Stewart. According to Schofield, it seems more suspicious that an anonymous source later contacted People magazine specifically to dispute parts of the story. She questioned why someone claiming to have hosted the dinner party would rush to correct the narrative while insisting on staying anonymous. The timing and motive behind that pushback struck her as unusual. O’Sullivan added his own take, acknowledging much of this remains speculation rather than confirmed fact. Still, he said it’s hard to imagine anyone other than Meghan herself being invested enough to want the story corrected. He suggested Stewart likely is not preoccupied with Meghan at all, given her own established status. However, he believed she may feel mildly annoyed by someone stepping into territory she’s long considered her own. O’Sullivan pointed out that Stewart spent decades building her reputation around cooking and home economics expertise. He argued that reputation makes her uniquely qualified in the eyes of the public. He then referenced Meghan’s Netflix series, “With Love, Meghan,” suggesting it revealed gaps in her lifestyle expertise once viewers actually watched it. According to O’Sullivan, that contrast is likely what mildly irritates Stewart the most. The commentary adds another layer to the ongoing public discourse surrounding Meghan’s post-royal career and public image. With opinions sharply divided, the story shows no signs of fading from tabloid coverage anytime soon.

Powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake hits western Colombia, killing at least 111

A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, killing at least 111 people and injuring dozens more in what authorities have confirmed is the country’s strongest earthquake of the 21st century. The massive tremor struck at a depth of 107 kilometres, with its epicentre located near Chocó. Despite occurring deep beneath the Earth’s crust, the intense seismic shock waves triggered widespread destruction across densely populated urban valleys throughout western Colombia and the primary coffee-growing regions. In Pereira, a four-story building collapsed into rubble, while video footage from Manizales captured the catastrophic collapse of one of the side towers of the city’s historic neo-Gothic cathedral. Severe building collapses and casualties were also reported in Cali, where local residents formed human chains alongside emergency responders to shovel away fallen concrete and pull survivors from trapped spaces. Thrusting the administration into its first major crisis just days after his inauguration, President Abelardo De La Espriella declared a national state of emergency. In a live television address, De La Espriella announced that all available state and military resources were being deployed to western Colombia, confirming that the national government’s immediate priority remains the location and rescue of victims trapped beneath collapsed structures. Severe regional communications outages initially delayed casualty reporting from rural zones near the epicentre in Chocó, where Governor Nubia Carolina Córdoba confirmed at least 12 fatalities and scores of injuries. Meanwhile, Colombia’s civil aviation authority halted flight operations across key regional airports, including facilities in Pereira, Manizales, Quibdó, Armenia, Cartago, and Buenaventura, while structural engineers assess airfield and terminal safety. The Colombian Geological Service recorded over 20 aftershocks following the initial quake and warned that additional tremors remain likely. Sitting directly along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, western Colombia previously suffered a devastating magnitude 6.2 earthquake in 1999 that claimed more than 1,000 lives across the same region.

Sindh announces August 4 school holiday

The Sindh School Education and Literacy Department has announced that all public and private educational institutions across the province will remain closed on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, in observance of the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA). According to an official notification issued by the department, the holiday will be observed on 20th Safar 1448 AH, marking the annual commemoration of Chehlum. The decision applies to all government and privately managed schools operating under the administrative control of the School Education and Literacy Department throughout Sindh. The notification stated that the closure was approved following a decision taken during a meeting of the provincial Steering Committee held on February 12, 2026. It confirmed that all educational institutions under the department’s jurisdiction would remain closed on August 4 to facilitate the observance of the religious occasion. Chehlum is observed every year on the 20th of Safar and marks the conclusion of the 40-day mourning period following the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), his family members, and companions in the historic Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. The occasion holds immense religious significance for Muslims, particularly for those who participate in mourning gatherings and commemorative processions held across the country. As part of the annual observances, mourning processions featuring Alam, Tazia, and Zuljinah are expected to take place in several cities and towns across Sindh. Thousands of devotees traditionally participate in these events to pay tribute to the sacrifices made by Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and the martyrs of Karbala. In light of the large public gatherings expected during Chehlum, the Sindh Home Department has also announced additional security measures aimed at maintaining law and order throughout the province. A day before the school holiday notification was issued, the Home Department imposed a province-wide ban on pillion riding for the day of Chehlum. The temporary restriction is intended to strengthen security arrangements and minimise the risk of any untoward incidents during the religious processions and gatherings. Authorities have clarified that the ban forms part of a broader security plan implemented each year for major religious occasions. Law enforcement agencies have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the measures while facilitating the safe conduct of mourning events. In a separate notification, the Sindh Home Department also announced the extension of Section 144 across the province for another month. The renewed restrictions came into effect on August 1 and will remain in force as part of ongoing efforts to preserve public order. Under Section 144, several activities have been prohibited throughout Sindh, including wall chalking, public rallies, demonstrations, and the open display of weapons. The restrictions are designed to prevent any activities that could disrupt peace or pose security concerns during the mourning period. The provincial government has urged citizens to cooperate with the authorities and follow the issued guidelines to help ensure that Chehlum observances are conducted peacefully and securely across Sindh.

Hasina vows Bangladesh return despite death sentence

Former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina has announced that she intends to return to Bangladesh from self-imposed exile in India in December, despite facing a death sentence following her conviction in a crimes against humanity case. Speaking through an audio message at an event in New Delhi marking the second anniversary of the 2024 uprising, Hasina said she was determined to return to her country regardless of the risks. She stated that serving the people remained her responsibility and that fear would not prevent her from going back. Hasina has been living in India since August 2024, when a student-led protest movement forced her from office after weeks of nationwide unrest. She was later convicted in absentia by a Bangladeshi court over allegations linked to the violent crackdown on demonstrators during the protests. She has consistently denied the charges. According to a United Nations report, nearly 1,400 people were killed during the 2024 unrest. Bangladesh has repeatedly requested Hasina’s extradition from India, but New Delhi has not handed her over. In her address, Hasina also demanded that the ban on her Awami League party be lifted and called for the release of political prisoners. She maintained that the party should be allowed to resume its political activities. Meanwhile, Bangladesh officially inaugurated the July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum in Dhaka to commemorate the 2024 protests. The museum has been established in Hasina’s former official residence and contains photographs, audio and video recordings, personal belongings of victims and historical records documenting the events of the uprising. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the museum alongside interim government leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, whose administration took office after Hasina’s removal from power. The museum also highlights allegations of political repression during Hasina’s years in office.

Oil prices rise as US-Iran uncertainty and shipping attacks raise supply concerns

BEIJING: Global oil prices advanced on Wednesday as uncertainty surrounding a potential peace agreement between the United States and Iran, coupled with attacks on commercial shipping in key Middle Eastern waterways, heightened concerns about disruptions to crude supplies. At 0553 GMT, Brent crude futures had gained 75 cents, or 0.84%, to reach $89.66 per barrel. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose 72 cents, or 0.87%, to $83.92 a barrel. Both benchmarks had climbed by more than $1 earlier in the session. The latest gains followed a strong rally on Tuesday, when both Brent and WTI settled more than $1 higher, reaching their highest closing levels since July 31. Oil prices had already surged around 5% on Monday as market participants became increasingly sceptical about the prospects of a US-Iran agreement to end the conflict. Concerns intensified after US President Donald Trump issued a fresh demand that Iran compensate people killed in wars, attacks and protests. Market analysts said the latest developments have left energy markets highly sensitive to changes in the US-Iran narrative. “The Middle East is increasingly becoming a seesaw between ‘deal’ and ‘war’,” said Priyanka Sachdeva, head of market insights at Phillip Nova in Singapore, describing the resulting price swings as a pendulum moving between roughly $70 and $90 a barrel. Shipping Disruptions Add to Market Pressure Concerns over the safety of crude shipments were also reinforced after the United States and Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis reported separate attacks involving shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy transit routes, making any prolonged disruption there a major concern for global oil markets. Iranian security official Mohsen Rezaei said the strategic waterway would remain closed unless Washington accepted Tehran’s conditions for ending the conflict. Those demands reportedly include the release of frozen Iranian assets and an end to other regional conflicts. Trump, meanwhile, has continued to send mixed signals about the US response, alternating between warnings of a tougher military approach and suggestions that an agreement could still be reached. The uncertainty has contributed to sharp swings in crude prices as traders attempt to assess whether the conflict will escalate or move towards negotiations. Sachdeva said markets could increasingly become accustomed to the frequent changes in the geopolitical narrative, creating a highly volatile environment for short-term traders and speculators. Hormuz Traffic Falls Sharply Shipping data highlighted the scale of the disruption. The number of vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz fell to only eight on Tuesday, according to shipping data cited in market reports. That compares with an estimated 125 to 140 vessels a day before the conflict, underscoring the extent to which security concerns have affected maritime traffic through the strategic waterway. A sustained reduction in shipping through Hormuz could have significant implications for global energy markets because the route handles a substantial share of international oil shipments. US Crude Inventories in Focus Despite geopolitical concerns, developments in the United States provided a counterweight to the bullish sentiment. A Reuters poll released on Tuesday had indicated that US crude and fuel inventories were expected to decline during the week ended August 7. However, market sources citing data from the American Petroleum Institute (API) reported a substantial increase in US crude stocks. According to the sources, US crude inventories increased by approximately 9.1 million barrels last week. Gasoline stocks declined by around 1.5 million barrels, while distillate inventories fell by approximately 596,000 barrels. The reported crude build was considerably larger than market expectations. If confirmed by official figures, the increase could ease concerns over tightness in the US oil market and potentially limit further price gains. Haitong Futures said in a market note that the unexpectedly large increase in crude inventories could reduce some of the supply-related pressure currently supporting oil prices. EIA Data Awaited Investors are now awaiting official inventory figures from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), the statistical arm of the US Department of Energy. The EIA’s weekly petroleum report is scheduled for release at 10:30 a.m. Eastern Time (1430 GMT) on Wednesday. Market participants will closely examine the data for signs of changes in crude production, refinery activity, gasoline demand and commercial inventories. Any significant deviation from the API figures could trigger additional volatility in oil prices. Longer-Term Supply Risks Remain Beyond the immediate market reaction, longer-term concerns over Middle Eastern supply disruptions continue to provide support to crude prices. The EIA has estimated that disruptions to Middle Eastern crude supplies could amount to approximately 600,000 barrels per day and persist through the end of 2027. With geopolitical tensions still unresolved and shipping activity through major regional waterways significantly reduced, traders are expected to remain highly sensitive to developments involving the United States, Iran and regional armed groups.

Complete story emerges after body of Karachi busin…

KARACHI: Details have emerged surrounding the discovery of the body of young Karachi businessman Mir Raza, with investigative sources revealing several alleged delays and irregularities in the initial response to the incident. According to investigative sources, information about Mir Raza’s body was received at around 12:36 p.m. on July 29. The body reportedly remained at the scene until approximately 1:45 p.m., before rescue personnel shifted it to Jinnah Hospital shortly before 2 p.m. The sources said that the Crime Scene Unit did not reach the location on the day the body was discovered. Instead, the unit reportedly received information about the body through social media at around 3:11 p.m. According to the initial investigation, the Crime Scene Unit had allegedly been instructed not to visit the location on the day of the incident. The team eventually arrived at the scene the following day. Investigators have raised questions over the delay, particularly because preserving a crime scene is crucial for collecting physical evidence and determining what may have happened. The delay in reaching the location could have affected the availability or condition of potential evidence. Sources further said that personnel responsible for tracking or searching for the device associated with the case were informed approximately 15 minutes after the discovery of the body. However, they reportedly did not reach the location at that time either. The Crime Scene Unit has since visited the site five times as part of the ongoing investigation. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body and attempting to establish a clear timeline of events. The investigation has also revealed another development concerning the police response before the body was discovered. According to investigative sources, police had received information about a robbery in Gulistan-e-Johar before receiving information regarding the body. Sources said that instead of being directed toward the location where the body was eventually found, police personnel were instructed to remain at the reported robbery site in Gulistan-e-Johar Block 7. The initial investigation suggests that the absence of local police personnel at the location where Mir Raza’s body was found may have contributed to the loss or disturbance of important evidence. Investigators are now examining whether the police response and the delay in the arrival of relevant units affected the collection of forensic material. The sequence of events has raised questions about the handling of the case during the crucial early hours. The period immediately following the discovery of a body is particularly important because physical evidence can be disturbed, removed or contaminated if the area is not properly secured. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mir Raza’s death. Investigators are also working to determine why the Crime Scene Unit was not present at the scene on the day the body was found and why the relevant personnel allegedly failed to reach the location after being informed. The repeated visits by the Crime Scene Unit indicate that investigators are continuing their efforts to gather evidence and reconstruct the events surrounding the case. Meanwhile, questions surrounding the police response and the alleged delays remain an important part of the investigation. Officials will need to establish the reasons behind the instructions given to various teams and determine whether any procedural failures contributed to the loss or disturbance of evidence. The final cause of Mir Raza’s death and the circumstances leading to it will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation, forensic examination and other available evidence.
