Oil prices rise as US-Iran uncertainty and shipping attacks raise supply concerns

BEIJING: Global oil prices advanced on Wednesday as uncertainty surrounding a potential peace agreement between the United States and Iran, coupled with attacks on commercial shipping in key Middle Eastern waterways, heightened concerns about disruptions to crude supplies.

At 0553 GMT, Brent crude futures had gained 75 cents, or 0.84%, to reach $89.66 per barrel. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose 72 cents, or 0.87%, to $83.92 a barrel. Both benchmarks had climbed by more than $1 earlier in the session.

The latest gains followed a strong rally on Tuesday, when both Brent and WTI settled more than $1 higher, reaching their highest closing levels since July 31.

Oil prices had already surged around 5% on Monday as market participants became increasingly sceptical about the prospects of a US-Iran agreement to end the conflict. Concerns intensified after US President Donald Trump issued a fresh demand that Iran compensate people killed in wars, attacks and protests.

Market analysts said the latest developments have left energy markets highly sensitive to changes in the US-Iran narrative.

“The Middle East is increasingly becoming a seesaw between ‘deal’ and ‘war’,” said Priyanka Sachdeva, head of market insights at Phillip Nova in Singapore, describing the resulting price swings as a pendulum moving between roughly $70 and $90 a barrel.

Shipping Disruptions Add to Market Pressure

Concerns over the safety of crude shipments were also reinforced after the United States and Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis reported separate attacks involving shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy transit routes, making any prolonged disruption there a major concern for global oil markets.

Iranian security official Mohsen Rezaei said the strategic waterway would remain closed unless Washington accepted Tehran’s conditions for ending the conflict. Those demands reportedly include the release of frozen Iranian assets and an end to other regional conflicts.

Trump, meanwhile, has continued to send mixed signals about the US response, alternating between warnings of a tougher military approach and suggestions that an agreement could still be reached.

The uncertainty has contributed to sharp swings in crude prices as traders attempt to assess whether the conflict will escalate or move towards negotiations.

Sachdeva said markets could increasingly become accustomed to the frequent changes in the geopolitical narrative, creating a highly volatile environment for short-term traders and speculators.

Hormuz Traffic Falls Sharply

Shipping data highlighted the scale of the disruption. The number of vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz fell to only eight on Tuesday, according to shipping data cited in market reports.

That compares with an estimated 125 to 140 vessels a day before the conflict, underscoring the extent to which security concerns have affected maritime traffic through the strategic waterway.

A sustained reduction in shipping through Hormuz could have significant implications for global energy markets because the route handles a substantial share of international oil shipments.

US Crude Inventories in Focus

Despite geopolitical concerns, developments in the United States provided a counterweight to the bullish sentiment.

A Reuters poll released on Tuesday had indicated that US crude and fuel inventories were expected to decline during the week ended August 7. However, market sources citing data from the American Petroleum Institute (API) reported a substantial increase in US crude stocks.

According to the sources, US crude inventories increased by approximately 9.1 million barrels last week. Gasoline stocks declined by around 1.5 million barrels, while distillate inventories fell by approximately 596,000 barrels.

The reported crude build was considerably larger than market expectations.

If confirmed by official figures, the increase could ease concerns over tightness in the US oil market and potentially limit further price gains.

Haitong Futures said in a market note that the unexpectedly large increase in crude inventories could reduce some of the supply-related pressure currently supporting oil prices.

EIA Data Awaited

Investors are now awaiting official inventory figures from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), the statistical arm of the US Department of Energy.

The EIA’s weekly petroleum report is scheduled for release at 10:30 a.m. Eastern Time (1430 GMT) on Wednesday.

Market participants will closely examine the data for signs of changes in crude production, refinery activity, gasoline demand and commercial inventories. Any significant deviation from the API figures could trigger additional volatility in oil prices.

Longer-Term Supply Risks Remain

Beyond the immediate market reaction, longer-term concerns over Middle Eastern supply disruptions continue to provide support to crude prices.

The EIA has estimated that disruptions to Middle Eastern crude supplies could amount to approximately 600,000 barrels per day and persist through the end of 2027.

With geopolitical tensions still unresolved and shipping activity through major regional waterways significantly reduced, traders are expected to remain highly sensitive to developments involving the United States, Iran and regional armed groups.

Meanwhile, the High Court Bar Association Rawalpindi and District Bar Association Rawalpindi also expressed concern over what they described as the continued lack of representation of Rawalpindi Division in Lahore High Court appointments. The District Bar Association Rawalpindi stated that ignoring the region’s experienced lawyers raised concerns about merit, transparency and regional balance. The association said Rawalpindi Division has a large legal community consisting of seven district bars and fourteen tehsil bars, producing many renowned lawyers, judges and legal professionals who have contributed to Pakistan’s judicial system. According to the association, no member of the Rawalpindi Division bar has been confirmed as a Lahore High Court judge since 2017, despite several capable lawyers and additional judges from the region having served with distinction. The High Court Bar Association Rawalpindi described the continued absence of representation as a matter requiring attention and said consultations would be held with district and tehsil bars to decide future steps. The Peoples Lawyers Forum also called on President Asif Ali Zardari and Peoples Lawyers Forum President Nayyar Hussain Bukhari to take notice of the situation. The forum requested that the notification process should be reviewed and that the Judicial Commission should provide details about the nominated candidates, their qualifications, selection reasons and the reasons why other candidates were not considered. The lawyers’ group demanded that if the process was found inconsistent with rules or principles of fairness, recommendations should be reconsidered and a fresh merit based review should be conducted. However, the dispute remains focused on questions of representation and transparency rather than any confirmed wrongdoing. The final decision regarding judicial appointments rests with the relevant constitutional authorities and judicial forums. The issue has now placed attention on the balance between merit based appointments and regional representation in the higher judiciary. Lawyers’ organisations have called for a transparent mechanism that ensures qualified candidates from all regions receive equal consideration while maintaining the independence and quality of the judicial system.

    Chief Election Commissioner of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, retired Justice Ghulam Mustafa Mughal, has said that the law and order situation in Muzaffarabad has improved, following concerns over uncertainty and security challenges in the city. Justice (retd) Ghulam Mustafa Mughal said that while there had been an atmosphere of uncertainty in Muzaffarabad the previous day, the situation had now become more stable and peaceful. He added that additional security personnel had been deployed at the two most sensitive constituencies in the region to ensure peaceful polling. The chief election commissioner said that security arrangements for elections on migrant seats in Pakistan were the responsibility of the relevant provincial governments. He explained that election materials had been dispatched to polling stations and that presiding officers had also left for their assigned areas. “Election equipment has been sent to the polling stations, and presiding officers have moved toward their respective locations,” he said, adding that in some remote areas, the transportation of election materials was continuing gradually due to logistical challenges. Justice Mughal confirmed that polling in Muzaffarabad would take place the following day and identified two constituencies—LA-5 Khawora and LA-3 Lajrat—as highly sensitive areas requiring additional security arrangements. He said extra security forces had been deployed at sensitive polling stations, while Quick Response Force units would also remain available throughout the polling process. In the event of any emergency or disturbance, the quick response teams would immediately intervene to control the situation and maintain peace. The chief election commissioner expressed confidence that the security arrangements would help ensure a smooth and transparent election process. He emphasized that all necessary measures were being taken to protect voters, polling staff, and election officials. Meanwhile, preparations for the second phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir elections have been completed. Polling will be held in three districts of the Muzaffarabad division as well as on 12 seats reserved for Kashmiri refugees living in Pakistan. According to the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission, the Muzaffarabad division consists of three districts: Muzaffarabad, Neelum, and Jhelum Valley. More than 890,000 registered voters are eligible to cast their ballots across these areas. A total of 208 candidates are contesting elections in nine constituencies across the three districts. The voting process will also include refugee seats representing Jammu and Kashmir Valley migrants who are currently residing in Pakistan. The Election Commission stated that six seats representing Jammu and six seats representing the Valley will be contested by Kashmiri refugees living in Pakistan. These seats are part of the legislative structure of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and allow displaced communities to participate in the political process. Authorities have increased security arrangements across polling areas to prevent any disruption and ensure that voters can exercise their right peacefully. Election officials have also directed security agencies and administrative departments to remain alert throughout polling day. The second phase of voting is being closely monitored due to the importance of the constituencies involved and previous concerns regarding security. Officials have assured that all necessary steps have been taken to conduct free, fair, and peaceful elections in the region.
