ISLAMABAD: Kuwait has congratulated Pakistan on the signing of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement with Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, signalling growing regional interest in the new security arrangement.

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar received a telephone call from Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah late on Sunday, during which the two officials discussed the agreement as well as the wider regional situation.

According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, the Kuwaiti foreign minister felicitated Dar on the agreement signed in Makkah on Friday. The two ministers also exchanged views on developments in the region, including the situation in occupied East Jerusalem.

Their conversation also covered bilateral relations and ways to expand cooperation between Pakistan and Kuwait, particularly in investment and other key sectors. The officials also discussed follow-up to Sheikh Jarrah’s recent visit to Pakistan.

“The two sides agreed to remain closely engaged,” the Foreign Office said.

The development comes as Pakistan continues to explain the objectives and scope of the landmark defence pact, which brings Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye closer together on security matters.

Dar has stressed that the agreement is defensive in nature and is not directed against any particular country. Under the pact, an armed attack against any one of the three signatories would be treated as an attack against all three.

The foreign minister said the arrangement was designed to strengthen collective deterrence while supporting regional peace, stability and security. He also maintained that the agreement was consistent with the right of individual and collective self-defence recognised under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.

Importantly, Dar clarified that the Makkah agreement does not replace or cancel existing bilateral or multilateral defence arrangements involving the three countries.

The pact could also have a broader regional dimension. Dar said the agreement remains open to other countries in the region that are willing to respect its principles and resolve differences through dialogue, cooperation and peaceful means. His comments came amid reports that Egypt could potentially join the arrangement.

Earlier, Dar also spoke with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, with the two officials discussing regional developments and the newly signed agreement.

Pakistan has presented the Makkah accord as part of its broader foreign-policy objective of promoting regional stability and peaceful conflict resolution.

With Kuwait now extending its congratulations, attention is increasingly turning to how the new defence framework could influence cooperation and security across the wider region.

    Jeff Bezos has placed his bet on CuspAI, an artificial intelligence startup working to discover and design advanced materials for the next generation of computer chips. The investment aims squarely at the material shortage behind the ongoing chip crisis that has rattled the tech industry over the past several months. This is not  CuspAI’s first big funding win. Back in July, the company closed a $450 million Series B round, pushing its valuation to $2.6 billion. That round pulled in heavyweight backers, including Bezos Expeditions, AMD Ventures, Nvidia, and Meta. CuspAI was founded in 2024 with a much narrower focus. Originally, the company built AI tools to identify and test materials for water purification and carbon capture projects. Since then, its mission has grown considerably. By expanding into AI infrastructure and chip materials, the startup now positions itself as a possible fix during a period of serious supply chain strain. One of CuspAI’s key advantages lies in finding substitutes. The company’s AI can search for alternative materials that mimic the properties of scarce elements like tantalum, gallium, and iridium. These elements are becoming harder to source as demand climbs, particularly with the explosion of AI infrastructure worldwide. The International Energy Agency has already flagged concerns that data centre demand for gallium could outpace supply within the next few years. Adding to the pressure, rising geopolitical tension between the US and China over rare earth minerals continues to complicate global supply chains. Analysts have pointed to this rift as a growing risk factor for tech manufacturers everywhere. Beyond securing fresh funding, CuspAI has also launched something bigger: the AI Materials Foundry. This initiative brings together more than 45 major industry players under one coalition, including tech giants like Nvidia, Samsung, Meta, and Hyundai Motor Group. The goal is to pool resources and expertise as the industry races to solve its materials bottleneck. With Bezos now backing the effort directly, CuspAI’s profile in the AI and semiconductor space is only expected to grow. As chip shortages continue to challenge manufacturers worldwide, the company’s approach of using AI to hunt for alternative materials could prove critical in keeping production on track.

    RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has distanced the party from recent remarks made by Imran Khan’s sister, Noreen Niazi, stating that her comments reflected her personal opinion and should not be viewed as the official position of PTI. Speaking to journalists outside Adiala Jail on Tuesday, Gohar said he had been informed that the interview in question was recorded nearly three months ago. He emphasized that Noreen Niazi holds no office within the party and is not involved in PTI’s political decision-making process. Highlighting national security, the PTI chairman described Pakistan’s recent success in Marka-e-Haq as a matter of national pride and credited it as a blessing for the country. He said Pakistan’s response to external threats had demonstrated its strength before the world and warned that any future aggression would be met with an even stronger reaction. Gohar also appealed to political leaders and the public to avoid making controversial statements about the armed forces or the country’s martyrs, stressing that such sensitive issues should remain above political disagreements. Reaffirming PTI’s position on terrorism, he said the party fully supports decisive action against terrorist elements and called for a united national strategy to eliminate the threat through collective efforts and available state resources. On the political front, Gohar confirmed that PTI’s boycott of parliamentary standing committees and the Judicial Commission remains unchanged.     Iran unleashes drone barrage on US bases

    The conflict between Iran and the United States intensified on Friday as Iranian military officials claimed to have carried out drone attacks on several military facilities used by US forces in Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan. The developments came after fresh US airstrikes on Iranian targets, signalling another major escalation in the months-long regional confrontation. According to Iranian military statements, “Arash” attack drones targeted US military warehouses and troop positions at Camp Udairi, Camp Doha and Camp Arifjan in Kuwait. Iranian officials said the attacks focused on weapons storage sites, military equipment and logistical facilities. They warned that further military action would continue if attacks against Iran persisted. Iran also claimed responsibility for drone strikes on Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain and Al-Azraq Air Base in Jordan. Iranian state media reported that fuel storage areas, aircraft hangars, maintenance facilities and accommodation used by US personnel were among the intended targets. However, there was no immediate confirmation from the United States, Bahrain, Jordan or Kuwait regarding the reported attacks. Officials in those countries also did not immediately report casualties or significant damage. Meanwhile, US forces reportedly carried out fresh airstrikes on an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) naval headquarters in the northern Iranian town of Zibakenar. Iranian authorities said the facility was hit but added that initial assessments showed no casualties. In Iraq, several explosions were reported near Erbil International Airport, where US-led coalition forces are stationed. Witnesses reported hearing air defence systems in operation while drones were seen flying over the area. Smoke was later observed rising near the airport complex. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that any country assisting the United States in military operations against Iran would be held responsible under international law. He said Tehran reserved the right to respond with measures permitted under self-defence. Araghchi also criticised Washington over comments suggesting frozen Iranian assets could be used to compensate for damage caused to commercial shipping. He warned that confiscating another country’s assets would create a dangerous international precedent and undermine global financial stability. The military escalation has also affected global energy markets. Concerns over security in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea have sharply reduced tanker traffic through key shipping routes. Shipping data indicated that only one oil tanker crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, the lowest daily figure in more than two months. The situation worsened after attacks on Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea increased fears of further disruption to global energy supplies. Rising tensions pushed international oil prices above $100 per barrel, raising fresh concerns about inflation and the global economy. US President Donald Trump warned that Iran and the Iran-backed Houthi movement would face severe military consequences if attacks on commercial shipping continued. He said Washington was prepared to respond forcefully to any further threats against regional security and international maritime trade.
