WASHINGTON: Senior US officials have reportedly raised concerns over the country’s military readiness as the conflict with Iran intensifies, prompting the Trump administration to temporarily pause its air campaign while continuing diplomatic efforts.

According to US media reports, Vice President JD Vance and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine briefed President Donald Trump during a White House meeting on the escalating conflict and the potential impact of prolonged military operations on US weapons stockpiles.

Sources said military leaders expressed concern over the depletion of key defence munitions and outlined the risks of expanding the conflict. While General Caine reportedly assured the president that the US military remains capable of carrying out all available operational options, he also highlighted the strategic consequences of continued military escalation.

Following the meeting, the United States halted its nightly airstrikes on Iran after nearly two weeks of sustained attacks. Defence officials described the pause as temporary, although they did not confirm whether it was directly linked to concerns over weapons supplies or other strategic considerations.

President Trump said negotiations with Iran remain ongoing but warned that military operations could resume or intensify if necessary. He also acknowledged appeals from several Gulf nations urging Washington to exercise restraint as regional tensions continue to rise.

White House Communications Director Steven Cheung reiterated that President Trump continues to favour a diplomatic resolution but stressed that all military options remain available if Iran threatens international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz or targets US allies. He added that after nearly two weeks of economic pressure and strikes on military targets, the administration believes Tehran should pursue negotiations to avoid further escalation.

She said holding a gathering with a large number of empty chairs would be disrespectful to Zardari. She also criticised those who advised the PPP leadership to hold the event in Lahore. She said the party should review the advice it receives from its provincial leadership. Bukhari claimed that the Governor House Punjab had a large number of empty chairs during the gathering held the previous night. She claimed around 2,000 chairs had been arranged for the event. However, she alleged that only around 150 people were present. The minister used the reported attendance to question the PPP’s political standing in Punjab. She said the party’s poor position in the province was partly linked to the information being provided to its leadership. According to Bukhari, some party leaders are giving senior leadership inaccurate reports about the party’s popularity and political strength. She said such reporting could prevent the PPP leadership from understanding the actual situation on the ground. Bukhari also criticised the PPP’s Punjab leadership for what she described as misplaced priorities.     Army captain martyred, seven militants killed in Hangu operation A Pakistan Army captain was martyred during an intelligence-based operation in Hangu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while security forces killed seven militants, according to the military’s media wing. The operation was carried out on August 7 after security agencies received information about the presence of militants in the area. Security forces launched the raid after confirming the reported militant presence. Troops engaged the militants at their hideout. Seven militants were killed during the exchange of fire. Captain Hamza Akram, 27, was also martyred during the operation. He belonged to Narowal district. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Captain Hamza was leading his troops from the front. He continued pursuing the militants during the firefight and lost his life while performing his duty. Security forces recovered weapons and ammunition from the militants’ possession. The military said the killed militants were involved in attacks against security personnel and law enforcement agencies. They were also linked to attacks targeting civilians. A clearance operation was launched after the main engagement. Security personnel searched the surrounding area to ensure that no militants remained there. Three militants killed in Mastung operation In a separate operation in Balochistan, security forces killed three militants in Mastung district. The operation was conducted in the Kambela and Asimabad areas as part of Operation Rad-ul-Fitna-3. Security forces carried out an extensive search and clearance operation across an area of around 68 square kilometres. Three militants were killed during the operation. The bodies of two of the militants were recovered. Four other militants were injured, including a key commander identified as Shaukat Mama, according to security sources. Security personnel also detained 12 suspects for questioning during the operation. Militant hideouts were dismantled during the clearance activity. Security forces also removed flags associated with the militant group from the cleared areas. The latest operations come amid continued security challenges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Both provinces have witnessed a significant number of militant attacks in recent years. Security forces have intensified intelligence-based operations to target militant networks, their hideouts and support structures.
