SSGC explains strong gas smell in Karachi

The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) on Sunday clarified that the strong gas smell reported in several parts of Karachi, including areas near Abul Hasan Isphahani Road, did not result from a gas leak.

The company said residents began reporting the unusual smell on Saturday night, raising concerns about a possible leak. However, SSGC explained that the smell came from the testing of odourisation plants during the commissioning process of a newly installed gas pipeline.

According to the company, natural gas has no smell of its own. Gas distribution companies add special odorants to the supply as a safety measure so that consumers can quickly detect a potential leak. During the testing process, SSGC added a larger-than-usual quantity of the odorant, which caused the gas to produce a much stronger smell than normal.

The unusual odour prompted people from different parts of Karachi to report what they believed could be a gas leak. SSGC, however, said its teams found no evidence of any leak and confirmed that the gas network was operating at normal pressure.

In a media alert issued on Sunday, the company urged customers not to panic and said they could continue with their routine activities. SSGC also reassured consumers that the strong smell resulted solely from the increased amount of odorant used during the testing of the new odourisation facilities.

Gas leaks can pose serious risks to public safety. Accumulated gas can cause fires and explosions, while inhaling high concentrations in enclosed spaces can lead to suffocation and death. Authorities regularly advise consumers to take immediate precautions if they detect an unusual gas smell and to report suspected leaks to the relevant gas utility.

The latest clarification comes months after a tragic gas leak incident in Rawalpindi. In January, three women died from suffocation while another woman fainted after a gas leak in an apartment in Bahria Town Phase VII.

SSGC’s clarification aims to reassure Karachi residents that the strong smell reported in the city was linked to the testing of its odourisation system rather than an actual gas leak.

Speaking at the certificate distribution ceremony for the FBR’s Postgraduate Diploma Programme at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said the government is committed to creating a taxpayer-friendly and transparent financial system that supports long-term economic growth. He said reforms are being implemented simultaneously in tax policy and tax administration, with a new operational model being introduced in the FBR to improve efficiency, accountability and public trust. The minister added that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is personally overseeing initiatives aimed at documenting the economy, broadening the tax base and promoting digital financial transactions. He stressed that modern digital tools, integrated databases and artificial intelligence will play a central role in strengthening tax administration and bringing the FBR in line with international standards. Calling on tax officials to continuously upgrade their skills, the finance minister said restoring taxpayers’ confidence and protecting national resources remain among the institution’s highest priorities. He expressed confidence that ongoing reforms would improve the business environment and ensure the benefits of economic reforms reach ordinary citizens. Pakistan, Norway discuss counterterrorism and regi…

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide held talks on Friday and reviewed bilateral relations, regional security and cooperation against terrorism. The meeting focused particularly on security concerns linked to Afghanistan. Naqvi told the Norwegian minister that militant groups were continuing to use Afghan territory for attacks inside Pakistan. The two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in counterterrorism and other security-related areas. They also discussed preventing illegal immigration, police training and mutual legal assistance. The Afghan situation was another key issue during the meeting. Pakistani officials briefed the Norwegian side about activities of banned organisations operating from Afghan territory and their alleged involvement in terrorism in Pakistan. Naqvi stressed the need for coordinated international efforts to eliminate terrorism. He said Pakistan was playing an important role in preventing terrorist threats from spreading beyond the region. Eide praised Pakistan’s role in the ongoing US-Iran conflict and described its approach as constructive and active. Illegal migration to Europe was also discussed. Naqvi said Pakistan had introduced strict measures against illegal migration and that these efforts had resulted in a 47 per cent decline in illegal migration from Pakistan to Europe. He said Pakistan had adopted a zero-tolerance approach towards illegal migration. He added that encouraging legal migration was essential to address the issue effectively. According to Pakistani officials, the European Union had also recognised Islamabad’s measures against illegal migration. The two ministers also discussed broader steps to improve relations between Pakistan and Norway. Eide appreciated the contribution of the Pakistani community in Norway, particularly its role in politics, healthcare and other sectors. Naqvi described Eide’s visit as an important opportunity to strengthen bilateral ties and expand cooperation between the two countries. Eide is on a two-day visit to Pakistan. His trip is the first visit by a Norwegian foreign minister to the country in around a decade. During his engagements on Thursday, Eide met senior Pakistani civilian and military officials. Discussions covered trade, investment, technology, climate resilience, maritime cooperation, skilled labour and security. Both sides also exchanged views on developments in the region and explored areas where Pakistan and Norway can further expand cooperation.

IMF pushes Pakistan provinces for rs430bn tax incr…

ISLAMABAD: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has asked Pakistan’s provincial governments to generate an additional Rs430 billion in tax revenue during the current fiscal year, as part of broader efforts to strengthen public finances and increase provincial own-source revenues. According to official details, the proposed increase in tax collection is equivalent to 0.3 per cent of Pakistan’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and is expected to be shared among the four provinces in line with their allocations under the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award. The move is aimed at improving fiscal sustainability by encouraging provinces to rely more on locally generated revenues rather than transfers from the federal government. Officials believe stronger provincial tax collection would also help create greater financial discipline and support long-term economic reforms. Sources said each province would contribute to the additional revenue target based on its respective share under the NFC formula, although specific collection targets for individual provinces have yet to be announced. The recommendation comes as Pakistan continues implementing economic reforms under its programme with the IMF, with revenue mobilisation remaining one of the key priorities for both the federal and provincial governments. Meanwhile, the federal government has decided to establish an inter-ministerial committee, to be headed by the prime minister, for the implementation of decisions made by the National Economic Council (NEC). According to officials, the committee will include federal and provincial ministers along with senior government representatives. It will be responsible for monitoring the execution of national policies, reviewing progress on major development initiatives and ensuring timely implementation of decisions taken by the NEC. The committee is also expected to strengthen coordination between the federation and the provinces, particularly on economic planning, fiscal reforms and development projects that require close cooperation among different levels of government. Government sources said improved coordination is considered essential for achieving national economic objectives and ensuring that development programmes are implemented efficiently across the country. Economists say increasing provincial tax revenues has long been a key recommendation of international financial institutions, which argue that greater fiscal autonomy can improve governance, reduce dependence on federal transfers and create a more balanced financial system. The IMF’s latest recommendation is likely to shape upcoming provincial budgetary decisions as governments evaluate measures to expand their tax base while balancing the need to protect economic activity. The proposed revenue measures are expected to remain a major focus of fiscal policy discussions in the months ahead.

Taylor Swift reportedly stands by Jack Antonoff am…

Taylor Swift is reportedly standing by longtime friend and collaborator Jack Antonoff following reports that he and actress Margaret Qualley have ended their marriage. According to recent reports, Antonoff and Qualley called it quits last month after nearly three years of marriage. While neither the music producer nor the actress has publicly commented on the reported split, new claims suggest that friends close to the former couple have begun taking sides as speculation surrounding their separation continues.  RadarOnline, citing an unnamed insider, claimed that Swift has remained firmly in Antonoff’s corner throughout the reported breakup. The source alleged that the Grammy-winning singer’s long personal and professional relationship with Antonoff has made her one of his strongest supporters during the difficult period.  “When a marriage like Jack and Margaret’s breaks up, and there aren’t any kids in the picture, the friends of the couple are forced to pick sides,” the insider reportedly said. The source also claimed that the separation did not come as a surprise to people who knew the couple closely. However, these claims have not been independently verified, and none of the individuals involved have addressed them publicly.  Swift and Antonoff have shared one of the music industry’s most successful creative partnerships for more than a decade. Since first working together on Sweeter Than Fiction in 2013, Antonoff has co-written and produced songs across several of Swift’s biggest albums, including 1989, Reputation, Lover, Folklore, Evermore, Midnights and The Tortured Poets Department. Their collaboration has earned multiple Grammy Awards and produced numerous chart-topping hits.  Reports of Antonoff and Qualley’s separation first surfaced in early July after the actress was absent from a high-profile event attended by Antonoff. Shortly afterward, multiple entertainment outlets reported that the couple had separated after what sources described as a rocky period in their relationship. Neither Antonoff nor Qualley has confirmed the reports, and their representatives have remained silent.  The latest speculation about Swift’s support comes from anonymous sources rather than official statements, making it difficult to verify the full picture. Even so, many fans believe it would not be surprising given the close friendship Swift and Antonoff have maintained for years, both inside and outside the recording studio.  For now, the reported split remains largely private, with the former couple choosing not to speak publicly about their relationship. Until Antonoff, Qualley or Swift address the situation themselves, much of the conversation continues to be driven by unnamed sources and media speculation. Meanwhile, Antonoff remains focused on his music career, while Swift continues her long-running collaboration with one of her closest creative partners.
