Sunny Deol protects Shabana Azmi in Batwara 1947 trailer

Veteran Bollywood actor Sunny Deol has unveiled the trailer for his upcoming historical drama Batwara 1947, offering audiences a powerful glimpse into a story set during the Partition of India in 1947. Released on Tuesday, July 28, the trailer showcases Deol in a striking new role as a man determined to protect humanity amid one of the darkest chapters in the subcontinent’s history.
Sharing the trailer on social media, the 68-year-old actor wrote, Har insaan ka pehla mazhab MAA hai (Every person’s first religion is a mother). #Batwara1947 Trailer Out Now. 14th August in cinemas near you.”
The film is set against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition, when millions of people were displaced following the creation of India and Pakistan. The story follows a Muslim family that migrates to Lahore after independence and discovers that an elderly Hindu woman is still living in the house allocated to them.
Sunny Deol plays Sikander Mirza, who arrives in Pakistan with his wife Hamida Mirza, portrayed by Preity Zinta, and their son Javed Mirza, played by Karan Deol. Upon reaching their new home, they meet an elderly Hindu woman, played by Shabana Azmi, who refuses to abandon the house where she has spent her entire life.
As tensions rise and others attempt to force the woman out of the property, Sikander chooses compassion over hatred. Defending her against growing hostility, he delivers one of the trailer’s most memorable lines:
“Hindu woman? She is a mother. Do not label her with Hindu-Muslim. Our first religion is mother! The first word that we speak is mother.”
The emotional dialogue has resonated strongly with viewers, many of whom praised the film’s message of humanity above religious divisions. The trailer also highlights the violence, fear and forced migration experienced during Partition while emphasising themes of empathy, sacrifice and coexistence.
Soon after the trailer’s release, social media users shared positive reactions. One viewer commented, “No religion can be good or bad, only human can be good or bad.”
Another fan wrote, “Goosebumps Yar… Only Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta can give 100% justice to this Movie.”
A third praised the film’s overall presentation, commenting, “A powerful, emotional, and thought-provoking trailer that promises a grand cinematic experience. With Rajkumar Santoshi’s direction, Sunny Deol’s powerful performance, A.R. Rahman’s unforgettable music, and a talented ensemble cast, Batwara1947 has all the ingredients to become one of the most impactful historical dramas of the year.”
Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the film boasts an impressive cast featuring Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh and Khushi Hajare. Academy Award-winning composer A.R. Rahman has provided the film’s music, adding to anticipation surrounding the project.
Batwara 1947 is scheduled to release in cinemas on August 14, 2026, coinciding with Pakistan’s Independence Day. With its emotionally charged narrative and message of unity during a time of division, the film is already generating significant attention ahead of its theatrical release.

Pakistan intensifies efforts to secure release of …

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting to assess Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to secure the safe and early release of 10 Pakistani nationals being held hostage aboard the oil tanker MT Honour 25 after it was hijacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia. The tanker, which was operating under the Somali flag, was travelling from Oman to Somalia when it was seized by pirates on April 21. A total of 17 crew members were on board the vessel, including 10 Pakistani citizens. Since the incident, the families of the Pakistani hostages have repeatedly appealed to the government to intensify efforts for their loved ones’ safe recovery. During the meeting, officials briefed the deputy prime minister on the latest developments surrounding the hostage situation and the measures being taken to secure the release of the Pakistani nationals. Dar directed all relevant authorities and stakeholders to maintain close and regular coordination while further strengthening diplomatic efforts with both national and international partners. The foreign minister placed particular emphasis on continued communication with Somali authorities and relevant international organisations. He said sustained diplomatic engagement was essential to creating conditions that could facilitate the safe recovery and repatriation of the hostages. Dar also expressed solidarity with the families of the detained Pakistanis and assured them that the government was closely monitoring the situation. He stressed that all possible efforts were being made to achieve a positive outcome and expressed hope that ongoing diplomatic contacts would ultimately result in the safe return of all 10 Pakistani citizens. Last month, Dar spoke by telephone with his Somali counterpart, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, to convey Pakistan’s serious concern over the hostage situation. During the conversation, Dar emphasised the need to protect the health and safety of the hostages, secure their early release and ensure their safe return to Pakistan. The Somali foreign minister assured Dar that his government was continuing sincere efforts to help secure the hostages’ release as soon as possible. The latest meeting in Islamabad comes amid growing concerns about the deteriorating conditions reportedly being faced by the Pakistani nationals aboard the vessel. In video and audio messages, some of the hostages have described severe shortages of essential supplies. They said food and medicines had run out and claimed that they were receiving only one serving of boiled rice each day. They also reported that clean drinking water was no longer available, forcing them to consume contaminated water. According to the hostages, the lack of safe water has already caused illnesses among several crew members, further increasing concerns about their health. One hostage said their lives remained under constant threat and that gunfire could be heard almost every day in the surrounding area. The situation has renewed attention on piracy along Somalia’s coastline and its potential threat to international shipping. Somali pirate attacks reached their highest level in 2011, when armed groups operated as far as 3,655 kilometres from Somalia’s coastline. At its peak, Somali piracy posed a major threat to one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes, disrupting commercial shipping and placing hundreds of seafarers at risk. Pakistan’s government is now seeking to strengthen diplomatic and international cooperation to ensure the safe release of the 10 Pakistani nationals. Authorities remain engaged with Somalia and other relevant stakeholders as efforts continue to bring the hostages home safely.

British Columbia declares emergency as fast-moving…

British Columbia declared a provincial state of emergency on Saturday after a rapidly spreading wildfire forced thousands of residents in the western Canadian province to flee their homes overnight, with the blaze nearly doubling in size within hours. The Bald Range wildfire burned out of control and expanded rapidly to roughly 9,500 hectares, prompting evacuation orders across Summerland, Peachland and other districts west of Okanagan Lake in the province’s southern interior. The region produces the majority of British Columbia’s wine and ranks as Canada’s second largest wine producing area, adding an economic dimension to the disaster beyond the immediate threat to homes and lives. Officials describe explosive fire behaviour Premier David Eby told a news conference on Saturday that one fire official had compared the blaze to an explosion going off. Eby said the official described flames reaching 100 feet up trees, with additional flames shooting a further 200 feet above that, and the fire generating its own weather system that produced lightning, which in turn fed further fire growth in a self-sustaining cycle. “Homes have been lost, and properties have been destroyed,” Eby said, adding that some residents became trapped as conditions shifted rapidly and required rescue. The premier described the situation as highly dynamic and continuing to pose a serious threat to the region. Summerland had a population of about 12,000 residents according to the 2021 census, while neighbouring Peachland is home to roughly 6,500 people. Province activates emergency powers The declaration of a state of emergency grants provincial authorities immediate access to special powers, including the ability to impose travel restrictions, protect essential supplies from price gouging and deploy specific tools to coordinate rescue operations across affected areas. Officials said the Bald Range wildfire has triggered the largest evacuation event of the summer so far, with more than 20,000 people across British Columbia forced from their homes since the fire began its rapid expansion. Summerland Mayor Doug Holmes, speaking by phone from nearby Penticton, said a large number of farms in the area have been affected and that officials do not yet know the full extent of structural losses. “They’re still busy fighting the fire,” Holmes said, adding that the community needed to prepare for the worst possible outcome as firefighting efforts continued. Residents flee as highways begin closing Many residents left their homes overnight, driving south toward Penticton or north toward Kelowna before several highways in the region began closing due to the advancing fire. Terry Fries, a Summerland resident, said he was watching a football game on Friday night when a neighbour warned him to prepare an emergency bag as the fire continued to grow nearby. Fries said the fire remained visible behind nearby hills earlier in the evening before conditions worsened. When British Columbia authorities issued the formal evacuation order around midnight, Fries and his family drove approximately 45 kilometres north to the city of Kelowna to reach safety. Residents captured video footage showing fires burning along the highway and structures engulfed in flames as they fled the area. By Saturday afternoon, ash had begun settling on cars and houses in nearby communities as smoke from the fire cast an orange glow across the sky. Power and water systems disrupted Summerland lost electricity on Saturday and issued a boil water notice for residents after untreated water entered the municipal system when it bypassed the standard water treatment plant due to disruptions caused by the wildfire. Wildfires strain resources nationwide Several Canadian provinces, including Ontario and Quebec, have battled significant wildfires this year as hot and dry weather conditions fuelled blazes across dense forest regions. International firefighting crews from Mexico, Australia, France and New Zealand have travelled to Canada to assist local personnel in combating the fires. In British Columbia specifically, where continued hot and dry conditions have heightened the risk of further fire spread, approximately 1,500 firefighting personnel are currently battling more than 100 active fires across the province. Authorities have issued 40 formal evacuation orders and an additional 49 evacuation alerts as the fire season continues to intensify. Wildfires have burned through approximately 4 million hectares of land across Canada so far this year, according to figures from the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, underscoring the scale of a fire season that has placed sustained pressure on emergency services and firefighting resources nationwide.

Angela Levin melts over George, Charlotte and Louis’ rare Scotland outing

Royal commentator Angela Levin has reacted to new photos of Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. Levin is widely known for her sharp criticism of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. This time, though, her reaction was far warmer. The photos came from a rare public outing. Kate Middleton and Prince William appeared together with their three children at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. It isn’t often the young royals are seen together at such events. Following the outing, Kensington Palace shared a striking family photo and video online. The palace captioned the post with a message about the day. “Incredible atmosphere at the Commonwealth Games today. Watching world-class talent compete and seeing the power of sport to bring people together is truly special. Thank you to everyone involved for such a wonderful day,” the caption read. Shortly after, a royal fan account shared a collage of the three children on X, formerly Twitter. The post simply named the children alongside the date of the appearance. Levin responded to the post directly. She wrote, “Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are gorgeous children.” The comment stood out, given her usual tone when discussing the wider royal family. This outing also carried extra weight beyond the photos themselves. It marked the first official occasion where George, Charlotte, and Louis were seen publicly in Scotland together. While in Scotland, William and Kate hold the titles Duke and Duchess of Rothesay. During their visit, the couple spent time with Team Wales athletes and their families at the Games. Afterward, the couple shared a message celebrating the competitors. “Congratulations to every athlete taking part in this year’s Commonwealth Games! A special well done to Team Wales for proudly representing the nation on the international stage. It was a pleasure to join the athletes today at Wales House. Llongyfarchiadau, Team Wales!” they wrote. The appearance quickly caught attention online. Many royal watchers praised how natural and relaxed the family looked throughout the day. For a family that generally keeps its children away from heavy public exposure, this outing offered a rare and candid look into their lives. Even longtime critics like Levin found themselves charmed by the moment, proving that some things manage to cut across royal rivalries entirely.

Nicole Kidman reveals her secret ‘stealth mode’ for nights out

Nicole Kidman has a clever trick for going out in public without being recognised. She calls it her stealth mode. Speaking with British Vogue, the “Babygirl” star opened up about how she enjoys ordinary outings and summer trips across Europe while keeping her identity under wraps. Her secret weapon is a slightly darker wig paired with a simple pair of glasses. Kidman described herself as genuinely skilled at slipping in and out of places unnoticed. She named cities like London, Ibiza, Paris and Portofino as regular stops during her European summers. She explained that her evenings can range from a quiet dinner party to a full night out dancing. According to her, it really comes down to two simple options, playing Scrabble at home or heading out for the night. Kidman described her typical evening rhythm in detail, starting with dinner around 10:30 pm and moving to a club by 1 am. She said she’ll usually put on glasses to help blend into the crowd. She admitted that sometimes she goes a step further, adding a dark wig to fully disguise her look. Once disguised, she said, she is free to simply enjoy dancing without being noticed. Kidman noted that staying surrounded by trusted people is essential to feeling comfortable during these outings. She said she always brings people along with her, describing that sense of company as something she genuinely needs. Elsewhere in the conversation, Kidman reflected on how differently she viewed life before her recent divorce from Keith Urban. She said she has since adopted more of a feelings-first approach to both her personal life and career. She explained that she does not want to be ruled entirely by logic anymore. According to Kidman, she once had a very different vision for how her life would unfold, but reality simply turned out differently. She said people often build detailed plans and expectations, only to find life does not follow that script. Kidman added that adjusting and adapting has become necessary, describing her future right now as something entirely unknown to her.

Pakistan ‘not a hard state’, says DG I…

Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), said on Friday that Pakistan cannot yet be described as a “hard state,” stressing that the country’s laws must apply equally to all citizens without discrimination or elitism. Speaking at a press conference focused on the security situation in Balochistan, the military spokesperson said the briefing aimed to address concerns about the province and explain the broader national security landscape. He clarified that the term “hard state” does not refer to military rule but to a system where the rule of law is upheld uniformly, every citizen is treated equally, and all issues are resolved through legal and constitutional mechanisms. The DG ISPR urged citizens to balance demands for rights with their constitutional responsibilities. Referring to Article 5 of the Constitution, he said loyalty to the state and obedience to the Constitution and the law are fundamental obligations of every Pakistani. He added that national identity should take precedence over provincial or ethnic affiliations, emphasizing that every citizen’s foremost identity should be Pakistani. Highlighting the country’s counterterrorism efforts, Lt Gen Chaudhry said security forces have conducted 40,348 intelligence-based operations (IBOs) across Pakistan so far this year, averaging around 194 operations daily, with a significant number taking place in Balochistan. According to the military spokesperson, security forces have eliminated 2,084 terrorists during 2026, averaging nearly 10 militants killed each day. He said 3,145 terrorist incidents have been recorded this year, while 819 people have lost their lives, including 303 Pakistan Army personnel, 194 members of law enforcement agencies, and 322 civilians. He also revealed that 28 suicide bombings have occurred this year, claiming that most of the attackers were Afghan nationals. He said Afghan citizens, along with individuals linked to Afghan security forces, were among those killed or arrested during counterterrorism operations. Comparing recent years, the DG ISPR said security forces killed 2,597 terrorists throughout 2025, while the total for 2026 has already reached 2,084. He noted that the effectiveness of counterterrorism operations has improved over time, with security forces now inflicting heavier losses on militant groups. Responding to questions about the increase in terrorist incidents, Lt Gen Chaudhry said militant groups affiliated with the Taliban have intensified their activities because Pakistan has adopted a firm stance against them. He added that the rise in reported incidents also reflects the growing number of proactive intelligence-based operations, which lead to more engagements between security forces and terrorists. He reaffirmed that Pakistan’s security forces remain committed to eliminating terrorism and maintaining stability across the country, particularly in Balochistan.
