Pakistani content creators demand justice in Azad Kashmir

A wave of digital voices is rising from Azad Jammu and Kashmir and from across Pakistan as deeply disturbing reports emerge of violence following elections held in the region. Content creators, local witnesses and public figures have taken to social media to share footage, demand accountability and appeal for international attention as claims of civilian killings spread rapidly online.
The unrest followed elections in AJK, after which protests erupted amid allegations of election rigging. Demonstrators took to the streets demanding protection of their mandate, and the situation deteriorated sharply when clashes broke out between security forces and protesters. According to locals sharing updates on social media, heavy firing continued throughout the night and cellular services were shut down in parts of the region, limiting the flow of information. Reports from the ground claim that more than 200 people have been killed, though these figures have not been independently verified.
Among the most widely shared voices was young digital creator Laibaro Manak, who addressed her message directly to PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. “My video is for Bilawal Bhutto,” she said. “I asked him about the internet shutdown and the situation, and he responded that everything should be handled peacefully. But soon after the election, countless people died due to open firing by forces. You took votes and are celebrating your victory, but Kashmir is bleeding. My appeal is to stop the firing. Mothers are waiting for their sons, unaware that their children are being killed by direct gunfire.”
Another content creator broke down in tears while addressing the camera, describing scenes of chaos and death he had personally witnessed. He said that after watching his friends die, he stood before the camera and demanded that forces open fire on him too, a raw and anguished act of protest against what he described as indiscriminate killing of innocent people.
A third creator spoke directly to the camera from the site of what he described as a long march that was met with force. “Today we were doing a long march, and security forces opened direct fire on us. Countless people are injured, and many are dead. Cellular services are shut down, and they are committing genocide in Kashmir. I request international humanitarian organizations to take action against the oppressors and share this news as much as you can.”
Actress Mishi Khan was among the Pakistani public figures to raise her voice. “Please have mercy on the people of Azad Kashmir and Balochistan,” she wrote. “They are citizens of Pakistan who are being treated in the most inhumane manner just because they wanted their rights as citizens. This kind of treatment is so cruel. Have mercy on your own people.”
Content creator Anumta Imran also shared footage documenting the deaths, as a growing number of digital voices from within and outside AJK worked to bypass the communication blackout and ensure the situation reached a wider audience.
The voices emerging from AJK are not simply asking for sympathy. They are asking to be seen, heard and counted at a moment when the tools that might otherwise amplify their cries have been deliberately switched off.

Telecom operators invest $178.57 million in Pakistan’s 5G rollout

Pakistan’s major telecom operators have invested an estimated $178.57 million in the deployment of 5G networks across the country up to June 2026, the Senate has been informed. The investment details were presented in a written reply submitted by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications in response to a question raised by Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri. According to the government’s data, Zong emerged as the largest investor in the country’s 5G rollout, committing around $98.9 million by June 2026. Jazz followed with an investment of approximately $59.67 million, while Ufone invested an estimated $20 million during the same period. The figures were based on information provided directly by the respective mobile network operators. No Foreign Investment Target Set for 5G Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications Shaza Fatima Khawaja told the Senate that the government had not imposed any specific foreign direct investment (FDI) target on telecom companies as part of the country’s 5G rollout policy. She said the Policy Directive for the Spectrum Auction, issued on January 6, 2026, did not include a requirement for operators to attract a particular amount of foreign investment for the deployment of 5G services. The minister clarified that the investment figures presented before the Senate represented data supplied by the operators themselves. Operators Plan Additional 5G Investment Telecom companies are also preparing to increase their investment in 5G infrastructure during fiscal year 2026-27. Jazz has projected an additional investment of approximately $30.33 million, while Zong expects to spend around $39.9 million on further 5G deployment during the year. A specific investment projection for Ufone was not available at this stage. According to the written response, the company’s future investment figures will be shared once its ongoing merger-related activities are completed. The government also noted that Ufone’s previously reported $20 million investment in the 5G rollout was an estimated figure. More Than 1,100 Sites Upgraded to 5G The Senate was also informed that mobile operators had upgraded 1,136 sites to support 5G services across Pakistan by June 2026. Punjab recorded the highest number of upgraded sites, with 587 locations, reflecting the province’s large subscriber base and extensive telecom infrastructure. The regional breakdown showed:  Punjab: 587 5G-upgraded sites  Sindh: 262 sites  Islamabad Capital Territory: 192 sites Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: 64 sites Balochistan: 31 sites No 5G-upgraded sites were reported in Gilgit-Baltistan or Azad Jammu and Kashmir in the province-wise figures submitted to the Senate. Pakistan Has 10,499 Fiberized Sites The government’s response also provided an update on the country’s broader telecom infrastructure, particularly the expansion of fiber-optic connectivity. Pakistan had a total of 10,499 fiberized telecom sites, with the overall fiberization rate standing at approximately 17.2 percent. Punjab had the largest number of fiberized sites at 6,153, followed by Sindh with 2,121 and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 953. The figures for other regions were: Islamabad: 521 fiberized sites Balochistan: 417 sites Gilgit-Baltistan: 196 sites Azad Jammu and Kashmir: 138 sites Despite having fewer fiberized locations in absolute numbers, Gilgit-Baltistan recorded the highest fiberization rate at 36.3 percent. Islamabad ranked second with a rate of 30.4 percent. Meanwhile, Azad Jammu and Kashmir recorded the lowest fiberization rate at 9.5 percent. 5G Expansion Linked to Digital Connectivity The continued investment by telecom operators is expected to support the expansion of high-speed mobile connectivity and strengthen Pakistan’s digital infrastructure. The deployment of 5G technology is also being viewed as an important step toward improving mobile broadband capacity, supporting digital businesses and enabling emerging technologies that require faster and more reliable networks. With operators planning further investment during FY2026-27, the scale of Pakistan’s 5G network is expected to expand further. However, the pace of deployment will also depend on infrastructure development, fiberization, spectrum utilization and the completion of ongoing corporate and regulatory processes.

The federal government has announced a nationwide initiative to introduce advanced information technology (IT) courses as part of its broader strategy to strengthen Pakistan’s digital economy and equip young people with globally competitive digital skills. The decision was announced during a meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja, attended by the heads of IT training institutions from across the country. Participants agreed on a national roadmap aimed at accelerating the development of a skilled IT workforce and expanding access to high-quality digital training. During the meeting, the minister directed all provinces to immediately begin offering advanced IT courses and internationally recognised training programmes. The initiative is intended to prepare Pakistan’s youth for opportunities in the global technology sector, freelancing, and the rapidly growing digital economy. Shaza Fatima said developing a workforce with modern digital skills remains one of the government’s top priorities. She emphasised that training programmes should align with international industry standards and market requirements, enabling young Pakistanis to compete effectively in global employment markets. The government believes that expanding access to advanced IT education will not only increase employment opportunities but also help boost Pakistan’s exports of digital services and strengthen the country’s position in the global technology industry. The meeting also focused on improving coordination among IT training institutions to ensure consistent delivery of quality education and practical skills. Officials discussed measures to enhance the effectiveness of training programmes and ensure they meet the evolving demands of employers and technology companies. To monitor progress, the federal minister instructed all IT training institutions to submit weekly performance reports to the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication. The reports will help the ministry assess implementation, track outcomes, and identify areas requiring additional support. Pakistan has been placing greater emphasis on digital transformation in recent years, with increasing attention on technology education, entrepreneurship, freelancing, and software exports. Government officials view investment in digital skills as a key component of long-term economic growth and employment generation. The planned rollout of advanced IT courses is expected to provide students and professionals with access to updated technical knowledge and practical training in emerging technologies. By expanding the country’s pool of skilled IT professionals, the government aims to support innovation, attract investment, and accelerate the growth of Pakistan’s digital economy while creating new opportunities for young people in domestic and international markets.

Ukrainian drone strike on Nizhnekamsk oil refinery kills 13 and injures dozens

A devastating Ukrainian drone attack on the industrial city of Nizhnekamsk in Russia’s Tatarstan region has killed at least 13 people, including a child and several foreign nationals, and left dozens injured. The strike targeted Tatneft’s TANECO oil refinery, located approximately 1,200 kilometres east of the Ukrainian border, marking one of the heaviest civilian death tolls inside Russian territory in months. Footage verified on social media showed thick plumes of smoke rising over the refinery complex, which processed 17 million metric tonnes of crude oil in 2024. Ukrainian military officials confirmed targeting the facility as part of an ongoing strategy to dismantle key Russian fuel infrastructure and reduce the Kremlin’s economic capability to sustain its war effort. Russian authorities launched a formal criminal investigation into the incident, qualifying the strike as a terrorist attack. Officials stated that residential structures were hit in addition to industrial sites, with nine of the fatal casualties occurring inside a local worker hostel. Diplomatic officials confirmed that the dead included seven citizens of Uzbekistan and one national from Tajikistan. The attack reflects Kyiv’s intensified campaign of long-range strikes targeting major fuel and energy hubs deep within Russia, which has created localized supply disruptions across several Russian regions. Local authorities in Tatarstan have declared an official period of mourning following the incident.
