Qatar and Pakistan advance mediation efforts as US and Iran pause direct military strikes

Regional mediators led by Qatar and Pakistan have achieved significant progress in restoring negotiations between the United States and Iran following a three-day pause in direct military strikes, according to regional officials.

The temporary lull comes after nearly two weeks of heavy bombardment triggered by Iranian actions in the Strait of Hormuz.

While US President Donald Trump and Tehran have temporarily halted direct strikes against one another, scattered attacks by regional armed groups persist, including drone attacks targetting Saudi petroleum facilities by Iran-backed militias and Houthis, alongside drone interceptions over Jordan and Iraq.

Talks facilitated alongside Oman are focusing on establishing a maritime management mechanism for the Strait of Hormuz to restore an interim ceasefire deal, although Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei stated that no direct negotiations with Washington are taking place and that the waterway currently remains closed.

Concurrently, US naval blockades against Iran persist, and global shipping through both the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb strait remains constrained.

Amid ongoing mediation, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump in Washington to discuss the wider conflict, while Iranian officials have condemned a recent Ukrainian strike on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea.

X blocks Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree’s…

SANAA: Social media platform X has reportedly suspended the account of Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree, removing an important online channel used to communicate statements and announcements by the Yemen-based group. The account had more than 121,500 followers and was widely used for posts concerning the Houthis’ military activities and claims of attacks in the Red Sea and surrounding waters. According to the report, visitors to the account were shown an “Account Suspended” notice. X’s standard message on suspended accounts says the platform takes action against accounts that violate its rules. The specific reason for the suspension was not immediately clear. Saree has been a prominent public voice for the Houthi movement, frequently appearing in televised statements and issuing announcements concerning military operations. His statements have included claims about attacks on vessels in the Red Sea as well as operations targeting Saudi Arabia and other regional adversaries. The suspension could therefore affect one of the group’s most visible channels for communicating directly with its supporters and the wider public. Saree’s online presence has faced restrictions before. His earlier Twitter account was suspended in 2022, after which another account was created for continued communication. Historical reporting also shows that Houthi-affiliated accounts have faced changes to their verification status and other platform restrictions. The latest reported action comes amid continuing tensions surrounding Yemen and the Red Sea, where Houthi attacks on shipping have drawn international attention. The group has repeatedly said its operations are linked to the wider regional conflict and has issued statements claiming responsibility for attacks against vessels. The Houthis’ military statements are often closely watched because they provide the group’s own account of operations, although claims about attacks and damage are not always independently verified. The reported suspension also raises broader questions about how social media platforms handle accounts belonging to armed groups and their spokespeople, particularly when those accounts are used both for political messaging and military announcements. While the immediate reason for the latest action remains unclear, the removal of Saree’s account could make it more difficult for the Houthi movement to communicate through one of its established social media channels. For now, attention is likely to remain on whether X provides a specific explanation for the suspension and whether Saree or the Houthi authorities establish another account to continue distributing official statements.

Nawaz Sharif summons PML-N meeting in Murree to di…

President of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Nawaz Sharif, has summoned an important party meeting in Murree on Saturday, August 15, to discuss the formation of a new government in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). According to party sources, the meeting will focus primarily on the political situation in AJK and the formation of the government following the recent elections to the AJK Legislative Assembly. Senior PML-N leaders are expected to hold detailed consultations on the party’s strategy and discuss possible arrangements for forming the government in the region. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, former Punjab Chief Minister and senior PML-N leader Hamza Shehbaz, federal ministers and other senior party leaders are expected to attend the meeting in Murree. All nine newly elected PML-N members of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly have also been invited to participate in the meeting, according to sources. Their presence is expected to be particularly important as the party leadership considers its options for government formation and seeks their input on the political situation in AJK. The meeting is likely to provide the PML-N leadership with an opportunity to assess the election results and discuss the next political steps. Party leaders are expected to deliberate on potential candidates for key positions and determine how the party will proceed with its government-formation efforts. Nawaz Sharif, as president of the PML-N, is expected to lead the consultations and seek the views of senior party figures as well as the newly elected AJK assembly members. The participation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also indicates the importance the party leadership is attaching to developments in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The political situation in AJK has gained significant attention following the elections, with political parties assessing their positions in the newly elected legislative assembly. The formation of the next government will depend on the numerical strength of the parties and the political alliances that emerge following the election results. The PML-N’s leadership meeting in Murree is therefore expected to play an important role in determining the party’s immediate political strategy in AJK. Discussions may also focus on maintaining coordination between the federal leadership, the Punjab government and the party’s elected representatives in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Sources said the meeting would involve consultations rather than a routine party gathering, with the leadership expected to carefully examine the political developments before reaching decisions on government formation. The participation of all newly elected PML-N members from AJK is also expected to help the central leadership understand the ground situation and political dynamics within the region. Their recommendations could contribute to the party’s decision-making process as it moves toward forming the next government. The Murree meeting on August 15 is consequently being viewed as a significant gathering for the PML-N, as the party leadership prepares to determine its course of action in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and coordinate its political strategy with its elected representatives.

Iran claims US deployed all weapons reserved for World War III

Iran’s Armed Forces spokesperson Brig. Gen. Abolfazl Shekarchi has claimed that the United States has deployed every weapon it had reserved for a potential Third World War against Iran, describing the recent military confrontation as unprecedented. Speaking at a meeting in Tehran, Shekarchi said Iran continued developing its strategic missile program throughout the conflict and did not halt production during either the fighting or subsequent ceasefire periods. He said maintaining missile production remained a key element of Iran’s national defense strategy despite mounting international pressure. The military spokesman also claimed that foreign intelligence agencies have failed to locate Iran’s missile production facilities despite possessing extensive intelligence capabilities. He said the country’s missile infrastructure remains secure and operational, allowing Iran to preserve its strategic deterrence. Shekarchi further alleged that the United States suffered major strategic setbacks during the recent conflict. He claimed that decades of American investment in military bases across West Asia had been severely damaged during the fighting. His remarks come amid continuing tensions between Iran and the United States following recent regional hostilities, with both sides continuing to exchange sharp rhetoric over military capabilities and regional security. The United States has not publicly responded to Shekarchi’s latest claims.

Pakistan rejects India’s statements at UN securi…

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has strongly rejected India’s remarks at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) concerning the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) and allegations of terrorism, describing them as an attempt to misrepresent facts and divert attention from issues raised by Pakistan. The response came after India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, accused Pakistan of supporting cross-border terrorism and suggested that the issue had affected bilateral cooperation under the Indus Waters Treaty. Pakistan dismissed these allegations during the UNSC’s High-Level Open Debate on “Natural Resource Governance: The Foundation of Peace, Security and Prosperity.” Speaking in a right of reply, Pakistan’s First Secretary to the UN, Ansar Shah, said India’s statement was misleading and represented a futile effort to distort the facts surrounding the treaty and regional security issues. He maintained that the Indus Waters Treaty remains legally valid and binding, rejecting India’s claim that the agreement could be placed in abeyance through unilateral action. Shah stated that the treaty contains no provision allowing either party to suspend or set it aside on its own. He referred to the Court of Arbitration’s August 2025 award, which, according to Pakistan, reaffirmed that the treaty continues to remain fully in force along with its dispute resolution mechanisms. He argued that India’s unilateral approach violated the terms of the agreement as well as established principles of international law. Pakistan also accused India of using shared water resources as a political tool. Shah said any attempt to weaponise water for political pressure or to restrict water access would amount to a serious breach of international legal obligations and norms. He added that such actions could undermine regional stability and pose risks to international peace and security, making the issue relevant to discussions at the Security Council. Responding to India’s allegations regarding terrorism, Shah rejected the accusations and instead claimed that India was attempting to conceal its own involvement in activities that Pakistan says have contributed to terrorism within its borders. He alleged that militant groups such as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), and the Majeed Brigade had been responsible for attacks that claimed the lives of thousands of Pakistani civilians and security personnel, including women and children. Pakistan reiterated its long-standing allegation that India supports and finances these groups, a claim India has consistently denied. Shah also referred to reports of alleged extraterritorial operations involving India, saying such incidents had raised international concerns. He further argued that India could not portray itself solely as a victim of terrorism while ignoring accusations directed against it. Addressing the situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Shah said the people of the region continue to be denied their right to self-determination. He maintained that the territory remains internationally recognised as disputed and asserted that no unilateral measures could alter its legal or historical status. He also urged India to fulfil its obligations under the UN Charter and implement relevant UN Security Council resolutions. Earlier in the debate, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, reaffirmed that the Indus Waters Treaty remains effective and legally binding. He called on the UN Security Council to remain vigilant against the misuse or weaponisation of natural resources and encouraged greater use of preventive diplomacy, peaceful dispute resolution, monitoring mechanisms, and other international measures to prevent disputes over shared resources from escalating into broader conflicts.

Government assures uninterrupted fuel supply amid …

Sources in Pakistan’s Petroleum Division have stated that the government is committed to ensuring the uninterrupted supply of petroleum products across the country. The assurance comes amid ongoing discussions with representatives of the Pakistan Petrol Pump Owners Association regarding fuel pricing and dealers’ profit margins. According to official sources, the government is working to determine petroleum product prices through a transparent and fair mechanism. Officials emphasized that the Ministry of Petroleum remains open to hearing constructive and practical suggestions from all stakeholders involved in the petroleum sector. They stressed that maintaining transparency in the pricing process is a key priority and that the government welcomes proposals that can contribute to a balanced and sustainable policy. Sources further revealed that the Federal Minister for Petroleum held a meeting with office-bearers of the Petrol Pump Owners Association, during which he listened carefully to their concerns and demands. The minister reportedly gave the representatives ample time to present their viewpoints and assured them that the government was willing to consider reasonable proposals in the interest of both consumers and fuel dealers. However, according to Petroleum Division sources, the discussions failed to produce the desired outcome because representatives of the association allegedly adopted an uncompromising approach during the meeting. Officials claimed that the association’s leadership insisted on having its demands accepted without presenting convincing arguments or practical justification. The sources stated that despite the government’s willingness to engage in dialogue, the association remained firm on its position and showed little flexibility in the negotiations. The Petroleum Division also said that the representatives of the Petrol Pump Owners Association eventually walked out of the meeting on their own before the discussions had been concluded. Officials maintained that the government had not ended the talks and was still prepared to continue negotiations in order to resolve outstanding issues through mutual understanding. According to the sources, the Petroleum Minister has already assured petrol pump dealers that the government is prepared to review their profit margins. The minister acknowledged that the concerns of fuel retailers deserve careful consideration and indicated that the issue of dealer commissions would be examined as part of the ongoing consultation process. Government officials reiterated that while they are open to discussions with all stakeholders, any decision regarding fuel prices or dealer margins must be made in the broader public interest. They emphasized that ensuring a stable supply of petroleum products remains the government’s top priority and that consumers should not face unnecessary disruptions because of disagreements between authorities and industry representatives. The Petroleum Division further noted that transparent policymaking requires consultation with all parties, including oil marketing companies, petrol pump owners, and other industry stakeholders. Officials expressed hope that future meetings would take place in a more constructive atmosphere and lead to a mutually acceptable solution. The ongoing discussions come at a time when petroleum prices remain a matter of significant public concern due to their impact on transportation costs, inflation, and the overall economy. Fuel dealers have repeatedly called for higher profit margins, arguing that rising operational costs have made it increasingly difficult to run their businesses profitably. Despite the differences that emerged during the latest meeting, government sources insisted that dialogue remains the preferred way forward. They reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining an uninterrupted fuel supply, ensuring transparency in the pricing mechanism, and continuing consultations with petrol pump owners until an acceptable solution is reached that protects both consumers and businesses.

Taylor Swift reportedly stands by Jack Antonoff am…

Taylor Swift is reportedly standing by longtime friend and collaborator Jack Antonoff following reports that he and actress Margaret Qualley have ended their marriage. According to recent reports, Antonoff and Qualley called it quits last month after nearly three years of marriage. While neither the music producer nor the actress has publicly commented on the reported split, new claims suggest that friends close to the former couple have begun taking sides as speculation surrounding their separation continues.  RadarOnline, citing an unnamed insider, claimed that Swift has remained firmly in Antonoff’s corner throughout the reported breakup. The source alleged that the Grammy-winning singer’s long personal and professional relationship with Antonoff has made her one of his strongest supporters during the difficult period.  “When a marriage like Jack and Margaret’s breaks up, and there aren’t any kids in the picture, the friends of the couple are forced to pick sides,” the insider reportedly said. The source also claimed that the separation did not come as a surprise to people who knew the couple closely. However, these claims have not been independently verified, and none of the individuals involved have addressed them publicly.  Swift and Antonoff have shared one of the music industry’s most successful creative partnerships for more than a decade. Since first working together on Sweeter Than Fiction in 2013, Antonoff has co-written and produced songs across several of Swift’s biggest albums, including 1989, Reputation, Lover, Folklore, Evermore, Midnights and The Tortured Poets Department. Their collaboration has earned multiple Grammy Awards and produced numerous chart-topping hits.  Reports of Antonoff and Qualley’s separation first surfaced in early July after the actress was absent from a high-profile event attended by Antonoff. Shortly afterward, multiple entertainment outlets reported that the couple had separated after what sources described as a rocky period in their relationship. Neither Antonoff nor Qualley has confirmed the reports, and their representatives have remained silent.  The latest speculation about Swift’s support comes from anonymous sources rather than official statements, making it difficult to verify the full picture. Even so, many fans believe it would not be surprising given the close friendship Swift and Antonoff have maintained for years, both inside and outside the recording studio.  For now, the reported split remains largely private, with the former couple choosing not to speak publicly about their relationship. Until Antonoff, Qualley or Swift address the situation themselves, much of the conversation continues to be driven by unnamed sources and media speculation. Meanwhile, Antonoff remains focused on his music career, while Swift continues her long-running collaboration with one of her closest creative partners.
