Houthis seek to replicate Iran’s Strait of Hormuz strategy in Red Sea, warns Yemeni diplomat

Yemen’s Houthi movement is attempting to replicate Iran’s strategy in the Strait of Hormuz by disrupting maritime traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb strait, Yemeni Foreign Minister-designate Afrah al-Zouba warned on Monday.

Speaking to reporters at the Yemeni Embassy in Riyadh, al-Zouba stated that an insufficient international response has emboldened the group to pursue control over critical Red Sea shipping corridors.

The Red Sea has emerged as a major flashpoint following escalations linked to the broader regional conflict involving Iran. The Houthis have intensified operations against Saudi Arabia by launching drone and missile strikes and announcing a blockade on Saudi-bound shipping.

In response, Saudi Arabia has conducted airstrikes targeting Houthi military positions and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting commercial maritime routes.

The surge in hostilities threatens to unravel the fragile truce established in 2022, raising concerns among diplomats and officials over a potential return to full-scale war in Yemen.

Al-Zouba confirmed that while military skirmishes persist along frontline positions stretching from the Red Sea to the Saudi border, neither side has launched a major ground offensive.

She emphasised that the internationally recognised government is prepared for further escalation, asserting that the conflict must ultimately be resolved either diplomatically or by force.

BTS faces backlash over Chris Brown concert appearance

BTS is facing renewed criticism online after members J-Hope and RM were seen attending Chris Brown’s concert, adding to the backlash surrounding the group’s recent collaboration with Google Gemini. On Thursday, August 13, J-Hope, whose real name is Jung Ho-seok, shared several videos on Instagram showing himself and RM enjoying the concert. The two BTS members could be seen dancing and singing along to the performance. Their appearance quickly sparked a strong reaction among fans on social media. Many ARMY members expressed disappointment over the decision to attend the concert, pointing to the controversies and allegations that have surrounded Brown over the years. The criticism comes at a difficult time for BTS, as the group is already facing backlash over its collaboration with Google Gemini. Some fans have raised concerns about artificial intelligence and its potential environmental impact, while others have criticized the group for promoting the technology. Several fans took to X to express their frustration, with some questioning how BTS members could support the AI campaign while also attending Brown’s concert. The hashtags “ARMYAgainstAI” and similar variations have also been used by fans opposing the collaboration. For some fans, the combination of the Gemini campaign and the concert appearance has intensified their disappointment. Others argued that members of BTS should be held accountable for the choices they make, particularly because a large part of the group’s global fanbase is made up of women. The controversy surrounding J-Hope and RM comes as BTS continues preparations for its highly anticipated Arirang World Tour. The tour began in April in South Korea and has been one of the group’s biggest projects since returning to group activities. Meanwhile, another BTS member, V, recently shared a worrying update about his health. During a recent livestream, V, whose real name is Kim Tae-hyung, revealed that he has been dealing with hearing problems for more than two years. He explained that he has been receiving treatment for hearing loss affecting one ear. V described the difference in his hearing between his two ears, saying that if the hearing in his left ear is at 100 percent, his right ear is only around 30 percent. The revelation concerned fans, particularly as BTS is currently involved in a major world tour. Many supporters have expressed concern for V and hope that his condition improves. With BTS facing criticism over both the Gemini collaboration and the concert appearance, the group remains at the center of intense online discussion. At the same time, V’s health revelation has shifted some attention toward the singer’s wellbeing as fans continue to support the members during their busy touring schedule.

Spain’s World Cup stars rewarded with tomatoes

Football trophies, medals and cash bonuses are common rewards for World Cup champions, but two Spanish stars have received a prize unlike any other. Following Spain’s 2026 FIFA World Cup triumph, Fabián Ruiz and Gavi were honored in their hometown with fresh tomatoes equal to their body weight, turning a local celebration into a viral moment. The unusual tribute took place in Los Palacios y Villafranca, a town in Spain’s Seville province that is famous for producing high-quality tomatoes. Instead of presenting conventional awards, local authorities chose a gift that reflects the town’s agricultural identity and long-standing tradition. During the ceremony, both midfielders were first weighed before baskets of freshly harvested tomatoes matching their exact weight were presented to them. Fabián Ruiz, who weighs 85 kilograms, received 85 kilograms of tomatoes, while 21-year-old Gavi was awarded 68.5 kilograms of the locally grown produce. The colorful ceremony, held at the town hall, drew applause from residents who gathered to celebrate their hometown heroes. Spain lifted the 2026 FIFA World Cup on July 19, sparking celebrations across the country. While players have been receiving congratulations and awards from football organizations and government officials, the tomato-themed tribute quickly stood out for its originality and connection to local culture. Fabián Ruiz played a significant role in Spain’s successful World Cup campaign. The 30-year-old midfielder featured for a total of 366 minutes during the tournament and scored Spain’s opening goal in the quarter-final victory over Belgium. His performances were widely praised as Spain marched to the title. Gavi, despite limited playing time, also contributed to Spain’s championship-winning squad. The young midfielder appeared for 85 minutes during the tournament and remained an important member of the national team throughout the campaign. Local officials also announced another lasting tribute to commemorate the players’ achievements. Two football grounds in Los Palacios y Villafranca will be renamed after Fabián Ruiz and Gavi, ensuring that future generations remember their contribution to Spain’s historic World Cup success. The heartwarming celebration highlighted how communities often honor sporting heroes in ways that reflect their own traditions. For the people of Los Palacios y Villafranca, there could be no better symbol of local pride than the tomatoes that have made their town famous—making the gift just as memorable as Spain’s World Cup victory itself.

Babar Azam returns to ICC Test top 10 after West Indies series

DUBAI: Pakistan Test captain Babar Azam has climbed back into the ICC’s top 10 Test batting rankings after producing a series of important performances against the West Indies. Babar moved up five places to 10th in the latest rankings released on Wednesday, marking his first return to the elite group since September 2024. The rise comes as the Pakistan captain looks to rebuild his standing in Test cricket following a prolonged period outside the top 10. The 31-year-old played an important role in Pakistan’s campaign in the Caribbean, particularly during the second Test at Queen’s Park Oval. Pakistan won the match by eight wickets, securing an away Test victory after a wait of more than three years and levelling the two-match series 1-1. Babar made a significant contribution in the decisive match, scoring 88 runs in Pakistan’s first innings before finishing unbeaten on 24 during the successful chase. He had also made 23 and an unbeaten 58 in the opening Test, although Pakistan eventually suffered a 90-run defeat. His consistent performances have now been reflected in the latest rankings, providing another boost to the Pakistan captain as the team prepares for its upcoming Test assignments. Babar was not the only Pakistan batter to make substantial progress. Abdullah Shafique made one of the biggest jumps in the rankings after an outstanding return to the Test side. Playing his first Test since October 2025, Shafique struck an unbeaten 160 in the second Test. His innings helped Pakistan secure a 43-run first-innings lead and played a key role in setting up the victory. Shafique climbed an impressive 25 places to 32nd in the Test batting rankings. Pakistan also saw movement in the bowling and all-rounder rankings. Off-spinner Sajid Khan rose five places to 30th among Test bowlers after his performances in the Caribbean. He also climbed five spots to 32nd in the Test all-rounders’ rankings. At the top of the batting chart, Australia’s Travis Head retained the No. 1 position, while India’s Jasprit Bumrah remained the leading Test bowler. India’s Ravindra Jadeja continued to dominate the Test all-rounders’ rankings. Babar’s return to the top 10 gives Pakistan another reason for optimism, while Shafique’s rapid rise underlines the growing depth of the team’s batting options.
